Mine are still playing up because I’m still running (what a surprise), anyhoo, I’ve been having having an email conversation with my coach and he writes this: “Flexibility, mobility, technique and strength. From a technique perspective, tomorrow and moving forward, I would love for you to concentrate on trying to lift your leg off the ground using your hamstring, rather than pushing off with the calf muscle. Strength, this will develop over time. Then from a flexibility and mobility perspective I think you are on the right track with daily mobility, yoga etc. In an ideal world I would also suggest a weekly-fortnightly massage or similar. Then it is about training load, if we do too much, or too soon then we'll run (pun intended) into challenges.”
Very interesting!
Similar to my PT, concentrating on flexibility and strength right now, I imagine this will change on Thursday though.
So I've not run for almost 2 weeks now, and I'm finally pain free today. I did my hop test today and I can hop pain free! I'm still not running till Thursday because I'd rather have an extra 2 days off and be fine, then run too early and irritate it again.
I've been religious about my stretches and strengthening. And I notice the difference!
So my first run should be after my PT session, and I cannot wait!!!
How to you lift through your hamstring? That will be an interesting technique... Have to try that one!
No idea. I’ll find out tomorrow. 🤣1 -
Got in 2 miles last night. I’m worried we will have storms for the next few afternoons, so I may venture to my gym that reopened last week. We have to wear masks inside though, and it can already be quite warm in there, so I don’t know how productive of a run I can have on the indoor track with a mask...5

@rheddmobile Yeah for the lifted curfew. Hope everyone decides to behave themselves and stays safe.1

Partly cloudy, low 60s F today, with no wind. Got out earlier; fewer walkers. As is usual after golf/rest day, legs and back were stiff. Loosened up fairly quickly and had a nice run.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020

yesterday i took a straight up yesterday. i wanted to run but i needed a day where i didn't NEED to do anything. almost got up and did a couple of miles but i needed a complete rest day. my brain was so busy.
so i did stuff around the house-which i've been slacking on.
this year has been a bad year for shedding. 2 hours later i got this from three dogs
daisy definitely sheds
and i went to bed in my running clothes so i just needed to roll out of bed. apparently, i turned off my alarm. no recollection of it. so hopefully, the tropical storm won't be toooo bad. this is the first time in 100 or so years one's making it up to wisconsin
hopefully my flowers survive8 -
@mbaker566 I think you have an extra dog there. Shedding season is the worst, even though it seems that with my Tippy there is no off season when it comes to shedding. Love your pups. So cute.1

@rheddmobile That's great news about the curfew! Wishing the best for Memphis.
I did a short second run last night because I was feeling really anxious (some personal stuff, some angst about the world). It usually doesn't impact my sleep to do a later evening run, but it really backfired on me yesterday and I wasn't able to get to sleep until after 1 AM. The alarm went off too early this morning! At least I (probably) won't have any trouble getting right to sleep tonight.

@quilteryoyo "off" season, i get about half. speed demon hasn't shed that much before but this year, she definitely got a wisconsin winter coat
daisy was neglected so she has a lot of extra fur. i don't think she was hurtfully neglected, just didn't get regular grooming-her nails are long and i can't clip them right now because the quick is too long2 -
Morning, all!
Guess what! Weights are IN at Academy! Woo hoo!
Still resting the legs --- left IT Band this time. I can feel that the right one wants to be testy as well, so last night I just rode bikes with my son. I don't think it made anything worse and it allowed me to still get some activity and miles in. Plus. Bicycling is a lot of fun! And with my son too!
@PastorVincent I really think the solution is to get rid of the washer and dryer.
OR. Stop using pockets.
OR. The neon sign idea.
Probably no running tonight, though it would be nice. I am making last-ditch efforts/ preparations for my daughter's 14th birthday party on Friday. Right when I think I am done, there's something else, but such is life. She's got a neurology appt / follow up today, so that should be grand, as well.4 -

@PastorVincent I mean, it's probably fine. Between sanitizing 3 x a day at work at before and after services at church, and then the smell of rodent in the office at work (dunno what's going on but it's BAD), what's one or a few more smell-bad items in my life? Maybe it's just my purpose in this season rotfl3 -

I met a couple of friends at 6:00 am this morning to run. It was already 70F. It was just getting daylight when we started on the out and back so I didn’t even think about the sun being up and in my eyes on the way back. Pretty sure I added a few squint lines to my face!

Summer Outdoor Life Basic Knowledge:
Your body’s primary cooling is done through evaporative cooling. That is, you create sweat (essentially saltwater) on your skin, and as it evaporates off it takes heat from your body with it. This system works very well in certain ranges of conditions and very poorly in others. Because of that, we have several different means of understanding the conditions.
First, keep in mind that temperature, humidity, and wind speed are directly measured, while the other key measurements: dew point, feels like, wind chill and heat index are all derived based on those three. They make it a bit easier to understand conditions at a glance but technically add no new information.
Also, these numbers vary greatly as the day goes on. Your best bet is to get a weather app that gives these numbers on an hourly basis. This will allow you to plan your outdoor excursions when the numbers are the best for the day.
HEAT INDEX: This is the temperature adjusted by humidity. Evaporative cooling works best in dryer conditions so the higher the humidity, the less effective the body’s primary cooling system is. This not only makes it feel hotter but you will actually be hotter since your body cannot cool as well.
WIND CHILL: This is the temperature adjusted by the wind. Wind increases the efficiency of your body’s cooling system by speeding up the evaporation of sweat from your skin. This number is based on the average wind speed, so that means the higher the variability of the wind, the less reliable this number will be.
FEELS LIKE: This is the heat index adjusted by the wind. This measurement attempts to take all factors into one single number and give you a single value to understand the conditions with. This number is partly based on the average wind speed, so that means the higher the variability of the wind, the less reliable this number will be.
DEW POINT: This is the temperature at which you would reach 100% humidity and have dew, based on the current amount of water in the air. This is calculated by plugging the current humidity and temperature into something called the Magnus Formula. As a result, it ends up measuring something that while many degrees cooler, will be similar to Heat Index.
So, the question comes down to, which number or numbers do you use? The most popular answer I hear is Dew Point but you could just as easily use Heat Index, which uses the same input so gives the same answer just scaled differently. Or you could take the basic three measurements, and chart them yourself.
The best thing to do, if you really want the best answer, is to log all the data points and pay attention to how they impact your activities. For example, you might find that running with a dew point of 70 is impossible for you, while someone else just finds it difficult. We each are different and any charts you find should only be used as a starting point.
For myself, I often lean towards Heat Index because the range of values is more intuitive than Dew Point for me, but that is just me. Each of us has to find what works for us and roll with it.
Final note, while it will not change how hard a run seems you should also check the UV index. This is another directly measured value. In simple terms, the higher the UV index is the faster you will burn. UV index peaks in the early afternoon so morning and evening runs will dodge the worst of it.

Got home
So humid couldn't breathe. Waiting for the storm to pass a bit4 -
10k humid run today. I tried to push the pace a litte, and didn’t do so bad. But clearly felt harder than normal. And the effort was there but the pace not so much. Everything @PastorVincent has posted about heat running is so true.
Oh, and ordered Nathan running vest. Was on sale and had reward points. Hopefully it fits well - on my small frame. I just realized that I need way more water/electrolytes then my running belt water bottles can hold.
Just hope it’s not too heavy feeling or that it would effect my running.2 -
Today has been an interesting day. You may recall that my AC wasn't working last week. Well, they came and put Freon in it so it would work until they got the new part in. Noticed last night it wasn't cooling again. I called them this morning to let them know and see if they can expedite the part. Not really, but it should be here tomorrow and they will put it in on Thursday. So, a couple of more hot nights. Good news is the part is under warranty!
I had decided to get up early and get my run in before it got too hot. Not being a morning person, this is a big deal for me. I got up at 6:30, had a banana and couple cups of coffee, and set out to do driveway laps at 7:30. Today's plan called for a Cruise Interval Run...essentially, run 10 minutes easy, then 4 x (5 minutes moderate/3 minutes easy), followed by 10 minutes easy. It was already hot - according to Garmin it was 77°F and 74% humidity. I really think the humidity was higher because it felt like I was trying to run underwater. My legs were okay, but it was tough. I did get it done - slow, but done. I ran 3.75 miles and also walked 1 mile. Oh, I programmed this run into my Garmin last night. It's the first time I have done that. WHAT WAS I WAITING ON? So much easier than trying to do math in my head while running.
Then, while I was cooling off, and before I had a real breakfast, one of my tennis buddies called wanting to know if I was scheduled to play today. She thought she had asked me but hadn't. So, I did what I do. I washed off some of the salty sweat, put on my tennis clothes, and left to play doubles tennis for almost 2 hours.
I spent the rest of the day taking care of things for my cousin. He had gotten a notice in the mail the last time that I was at his apartment that he had 2 certified letters that had to be signed for at the main post office. I called and they said as long as I brought the POA and an ID that I could sign for them for him. So, I went there first. Looked at them and they were basically eviction notices from his apartment! Really? They have been so nice through all of this and asking about when he was gong to get to come back, etc. I just wish they had mentioned it earlier - before paying for 2 months rent. Anyway, the reasons are that he violated the contract in two ways: 1) They saw evidence in his apartment that he was smoking in there and that is a no no. Especially since he has Oxygen. (He says he always went outside to smoke. I wasn't there, so don't know.) 2) Violence. When he had his "episode," which we believe was caused by lack of oxygen to the brain, he had broken into an elderly lady's apartment and scared her to death. When they called the police, he was apparently violent with them.
I went to the nursing home to talk to the lady who is trying to get him into long term care for safety reasons. She informed me that he has been denied. I explained to her that he is being evicted from his apartment. She took a copy of the notice and is going to see if that will make any difference to the state. Not the news I needed to hear.
I got home and called one of the local low income housing places. They do have an opening! Yeah. But they are HUD as was the other and I'm not sure if he was kicked out of one for the above reasons if he is able to rent another one. They said something about a background check. Well have to see. I have an appointment to go by and fill out paperwork with them on Friday.
In the meantime, I am going to call other places and the VA. I really wish that Medicaid helped with assisted living, as that is what he really needs, but can't afford. It's pretty sad. So, just more for me to do, but at least I am hopeful that he can get into the housing I called today. And, I really am glad that I have the time and can do this for him. Otherwise, he's really be up *kitten* creek. We have until July 17th, when his 100 days at the nursing home is up.7 -

Awww this bought a tear to my eye. He was so so good at self discipline.
Sadly, it's sore again today. May or May not have something to do with the run I attempted this morning 🤦🏼♀️I thought it's fine, it's just one more day. It's not majorly sore, but enough that I didn't do the full run. I ran 1k, walked 1k, ran another then walked the final 2. Which was my plan. PT again tomorrow. And probably another week of no running. Sigh.8 -

It will feel heavy at first. A standard hydration pack holds around 50oz of water. That is just over 3 pounds of water by itself. Once you add the weight of the vest and anything else you might stick in it, you could easily hit 5-6 pounds. The nice thing is a well-made vest spreads the weight out so you notice it less, but you probably will notice it at first. Over time you get used to it and it sort of fades away.

One great thing is it starts out feeling heavy, but gets lighter as you go till the end where you barely notice it!2 -
