Wore my new running shorts for the first time today, I usually wear full length leggings because I have chubby thighs and they chaff and the last time I wore shorts it was not a pleasant experience. But I got some longer ones and they worked great! I stayed cooler and no chaffing!5 -
@shanaber @Avidkeo @Camaramandy648 @janejellyroll @eleanorhawkins @PastorVincent @skippygirlsmom @Teresa502
Thanks for the tips and advice on the vest. I may actually give it a try tomorrow on my run just to see...I'll keep you posted!

@skippygirlsmom - After I run, I disconnect and rinse the hose and then put it in freezer to keep the germs from growing. A friend gave me that tip and it works beautifully!
@Teresa502 I'm going to do this, thanks!1 -
@quilteryoyo - sorry about your HM being cancelled. I would probably defer to next year. Although I'm sure you could do a half on your own, your first half needs to be a fun experience and destination races are the best!

I let it dry a bit. and throw the whole bladder and hose in too1 -
@Camaramandy648 I've never used an apple watch (my phone is a Samsung) but I love my Garmin. I have the Forerunner 35 which is pretty basic, but it does everything I need. And Garmin's customer service is great. I've had mine for about 2.5 years and once the band broke. I contacted them and they shipped a new band right out to me. And then last week my watch stopped vibrating for alerts. I contacted them and they said they'd replace it so I shipped it back and they shipped me a replacement. I will definitely get another Garmin when I decide to upgrade. And it does connect with MFP. Mine doesn't have music, but it works with the music on my phone and I can pause and skip music from the watch.
@kgirlhart I missed you got your replacement! Yay! Feeling the vibes again I hope.
@Camaramandy648 I had a fitbit before upgrading to Garmin.
I find Garmin just are more robust, have an excellent after sales care - I too recently had my watch straight out replaced. I think for the money you get much better features and far superior battery life on a Garmin than apple.
I have a vivoactive 4s. I had GPS (so much more accurate thatln apple I've read), music, smart connectivity, garmin pay (equivalent to apple pay), HR monitor. It syncs to MFP, and basically any connected service you like - and doesn't have the issues syncing that apple are apparently having.
I got a garmin because I wanted a good inboard GPS and I didn't want to have to take my phone on runs. I stay with garmin because they are a great watch with great service.

Yep, I wash mine out, air it to dry a bit then chuck the whole bladder and hose in a bag and into the freezer until next time.2 -
@Camaramandy648 - I am an Apple Watch person too but I have the 3 I believe. There have been a lot of improvements and I still love it. I do not have a data plan and it works just fine with or without my phone. I can load music onto it and connect with my wireless headphones although most of the time I have my phone with me anyways so I can text or get calls if needed.
I run Strava on my watch most of the time but with the Apple Run workout you get more information now like cadence (current and average), rolling pace and average pace, current elevation and elevation gain, etc.. I have debated getting a new Apple Watch or a Garmin and I think for me I will stick with the newer Apple Watch. Oh I do mostly wear a HRM strap with it when I run because of my weird HR but it matches up almost exactly with the tests I have had at the cardiologist's. I haven't found anything lacking or missing for my needs especially now that they have cadence available.
I do have to charge it every other day or so but I have not had any issues with the battery not being enough for even my longest runs - I am not however running 15-20 miles any longer.
@kgirlhart - I know the toe caps are like nothing is there. Sometimes I take my socks off though and forget it is there and then it feels really strange when you walk.
@quilteryoyo - oh I thought just maybe a September race would get done. I'm sorry it was cancelled ☹️
I too, put the entire bladder and the hose from my hydration vest in the freezer. The guy that helped me with it at REI told me to do that.
Had a bunch of things to get done this morning so no run and it is another really hot day. Hopefully the last one for a bit though. We broke records yesterday at 103F and today will likely be close to that if not over. I am already worrying what August and September are going to look like. If it cools down when the sun sets I am going to get Hobbes out for a walk - he needs it as much as I do.3 -
@shanaber I was hopeful about the race. I had checked the website a couple of weeks ago and it was still on. Oh well. Not horribly upset as I was sort of expecting it, but it is disappointing. Still going to train and then find another one when things open up.3

Hey that is a good idea! Next time I replace my hose I will have to try that.

I had to look back to see if I already posted today - seems like a long day. I managed to be only 5 minutes late for m 7 am run today. We have been running the trail around two lakes, where the big one is about 2 miles and the small about 1 mile around. I was going to stop with one loop around both again when my friend was done, but decided i might as well head back out for one more loop around the bigger lake so I ended up with 5.
I'm having some annoying pelvic alignment related pain. I would say more discomfort than pain. I've had SI joint problems in the past and this feels related but more in the front of the pelvis than the back. I just wish something would pop back into place but I can't seem to get the right stretch to do that. I've been doing some of the exercises I was given when I had a bad flare up of the SI joint pain and it seems to almost do it, so maybe it will help eventually. I don't think running is making it any worse at least. If times were normal, I'd go get a massage.9 -
I’m staying on a dawn running schedule for the foreseeable future because of the weather here - it’s forecast to be 90s in the evenings but only 60s at dawn. I’m just happy that it’s back to dropping at dawn, Tuesday it never went below 80 in the entire 24 hr period, and high humidity too, 97 degree heat index at 2 am! What is that about, I have never seen weather like that in my life. Normally our late night temps are in the 70s even in July and August.
So, Sunday was a rest day, Monday was storms all day so I did lifting, Tuesday was errands day for my mother (takes all day). Wednesday we stayed up late from Tuesday and ran at dawn, and it was about 78, but not humid, and actually felt a little better due to a breeze. We had speedwork on the schedule, still doing the challenge to improve mile time. I felt pretty good but my husband was riding the struggle bus, which I guess is payback for the other day when he was outrunning me on hills. We did a total of 10k at various paces. My knee is still unfortunately a thing.
Swapping to a morning schedule (where morning is the end of our night) is rough on us, but it’s not a bad idea for a few reasons, such as shopping. Yesterday our county had the highest ever one day rate of new Covid 19 cases and new hospitalizations, and the trend is double the previous rate. The surge of cases from the protests is starting. And afternoon shoppers here don’t wear masks. Morning people are much more likely to be elderly and worried about their own health. And speaking of protests, I was right about the storm warnings putting an effective end to them - there was one scheduled for Monday and they canceled it because of the weather, and it was never rescheduled. Memphians are pretty predictable, we don’t like to get rained on.
Anyway we had a lovely time running in the morning, after our speedwork we cut through the farm park and community garden, petted a goat, and talked to a rooster. The community garden has been reopened for a while but the animals were still elsewhere. They used to have bunnies but the bunnies are still not back yet.7 -
@quilteryoyo sorry about the half. If it were me I would do the distance at some point just to say I did it, but defer the registration to next year.1

Sorry I missed this until I saw some replies to it.
If it was me I would likely gift the race to the airman. Failing that, defer. Failing that get a refund. I would not do the virtual race. I might run that distance on that day, but it will not be the same as a non-virtual race. I suggest you wait a while to see if we will be facing the second wave that everyone is talking about and look for a new HM post that wave.3 -

Just seeing this also. If it were me and I could make it in 2021, I would defer. Next option is gift it to an airman. I'm not one for virtual races either... they are basically just training runs with a medal. I can just as easily do the training run without a medal.
FYI - my current PP was taken after finishing the 2019 Air Force Marathon.
And I really hope the Marine Corps Marathon in October still happens... I'm running it with my older brother. It will be his first marathon and he is also retired from the air national guard.5 -
Saw the Physio therapist again today. He did not tell me off for yesterdays run, he actually praised me for stopping when I knew it was too much. He gave me a few more exercise to do, to really strengthen my core, hips, glutes etc. And to stretch my hamstrings and hipflexors out. The idea is to strengthen all those muscles, and relax the flexor should help the soleus and calf.
He's said no running for another week, but I can try run again next Wednesday (Thursday today).
So still no running, but I'm not as sore today as I was yesterday, and definitely not as sore as after the last PT session.
So I'm starting to feel confident that after another week, and with the continuing strength training I'll be better in the long run.
In the meantime I went to the pools and did 10 mins of laps and 10 mins aqua jogging. Was pretty cool. Definitely felt it, just tired muscles. Enjoyed it!8 -
Hey everyone!
While I've been resting my shoulder, I've been wondering:
How do you guys feel about cycling vs running? Obviously this is a running group, any cycling converts (either way) out there, and if so, why? @Camaramandy648 , short of an injury, would you ever switch to cycling instead of running?
Does anyone here both cycle and run frequently as forms of exercise (other than training for a triathlon or something similair)? If so, why both and not just one? Are there any particular benefits to one over the other, or does it just come down to person preference?
I've been MIA the last couple days as I took some total rest days to help my shoulder heal, which included some celebrating for a friends birthday.
I've been taking some walks on the beach, and did a bit of light lower body and core exercise yesterday, and it was really nice to get moving again.
My shoulder is getting better, I think, I've been trying not to strain/use it much at all, so it's hard to tell. I did some light yoga/stretching after my workout yesterday and I definitely felt it while reaching behind to grab my foot for belly down dancer pose (not sure if this is the actual name). We are also doing some overhead fiberglass work on the bottom side of our boat, which I was worried about aggravating my shoulder, but it seems to be fine. My arm muscles are a little tired tho.
Some friends and I are going for a hike today, and I plan to start doing some short runs again next week. A friend has lent me a bicycle, which I'm pretty excited about. I used to cycle a lot, as my main form of transportation, while I was in university and really loved it. If my shoulder continues to bother me I might start cycling more than running, though I'd really like to at least come close to my goal of running 40 km this month!

OOOOOHHH MMMMMMMMMM GGGEEEEEE! How could you ever bring up the EVIL EVIL EEEEVVVIIILL sport of cycling in this thread!?!?!?
Joking of course. There are a few people in this thread that cycle in addition to running. I am sure there is a similar thread to this one dedicated to cyclists. We are a pretty inclusive bunch so cycle all you want, we will not kick you out of the thread but if you are looking for specific cycling advice, a cycling focused group would have more of that.

A wonderful opportunity for a Monthly Question
What do you do outside of running for health; physical, mental or emotional?2 -
Our Wisconsin heat wave finally broke!! Yesterday it was a beautiful 64 degrees F outside, rather than 90 and humid. Me and the dogs ran 2 miles out in the sunshine. It was super refreshing after an entire week on the treadmill. And this preggo with her dumb pregnancy brain forgot to even open Runkeeper until I had already gone a half a block. So, we technically ran longer than 2 miles. Oops!
The hardest thing about this is slowing down. I don't want to yet. I've cut it from 4-5 mile runs to 3-4, now down to 2. I feel like I can go farther, but last time I did I got braxton hicks. 2 miles seems to be my body's happy point right now.
Slowing down is more challenging than to keep going. I'm a very "mind over matter" person. I've never stopped when I'm tired, I stop when I'm done. Maybe its my police training, maybe its that I grew up with an Army dad, I don't know. I brush everything off as a dumb excuse and I just want to keep going. Fighting your nature is hard.
We're at 13 miles out of 30 for the month. I think we'll surpass it, but I didn't want to be too ambitious just in case.8 -
fell asleep yesterday after work and slept thru my alarm this morning. see what happens this evening
i wish i didn't have hypersomnia7 -
@Avidkeo Glad you didn't get yelled at by the Physio. Hope another week of strength training will do the job and you'll be back to normal.
@rheddmobile Glad you are getting in early morning runs. It's hard to figure out the best time to run right now.
@katharmonic Yeah for the nice 5 mile run. Hope continued stretching will make the pain go away.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner I hope the Marine Corps Marathon is a go for you. Cool that your picture is from the AF Marathon.
@Lexigraph Hope the shoulder continues to heal. Glad you are still getting out and doing what you can.
@brittanystebbins95 You are doing great. Slowing down is the right thing to do, even if it is hard. Think of it as a different kind of mind over matter. It's still a mental battle that you can win because you are strong. It's just a different battle.
@Elise4270 Monthly question: I play tennis. It gives me some social time with others and I find that running helps me get to some of the balls I wouldn't have in the past. I also journal every.single.day. That is my mental/emotional outlet and it really, really helps.
Thanks for the input on the AF Marathon options everyone. I am leaning toward gifting my registration to an airman and then signing up again in Jan if they plan to have it next year. They are giving a 20% discount for next year if you do this option. I will probably run the distance at some point...maybe in another race or just for training. I was a little worried about my current plan because the max mileage it has is 12 miles. I think mentally I need to run the entire distance in training in order to do my best at the event, not having to worry about that extra mile.5 -

Mostly cloudy and mid 60s F today, with a refreshing breeze out of the west. At some point before this morning's run, I remembered that I came in after yesterday's run to cool off a little before going back out to stretch. Forgot to do that.
Falls right into line with my next observation. I take a statin for my cholesterol, and saw there was a YouTube video about side effects. I was too lazy to watch the video, so I Googled statin side effects. Runny nose (yep); joint pain (really?); forgetfulness (haha); muscle spasms/pain (like charley horses?); and loss of appetite (managed to avoid that one).
Hopped on the scale today to check my progress. My weight is indeed changing; but it's going in the wrong direction. Perhaps last night's thunderstorms scrambled the scale's electronic brain...
Regarding the question, it's yoga and resistance band training in the winter; golf and gardening in the summer; and trout fishing any time I can.
Have a wonderful day, everybody!!!!!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

9-19 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson, OH
10-11 Haunted Hustle 5k, Aurora, OH7 -
@Tramboman Side effects of medicine can be horrible. Hope you can figure out how to mitigate yours.0

I'm going to run tomorrow....outside. Practice a 5k faster than a turtle. That's the post....Jk.
@Lexigraph As @PastorVincent said, I am one of the evil "cyclists" that started on this thread as a "runner" then got a stress fracture in my femur so was derailed. But I was told I could swim or cycle due to the non weight-bearing aspect. I got a Peloton by canceling my yoga studio to keep the costs the same. I am a convert to the cross-training benefits"! My cardio is so much stronger - I never pushed myself running. Now my runs are getting faster as I try to do temps/ speed work. I am also working on my running form. My quads, hams and glutes are so much stronger. So yeah, I am not running as much which is probably better for my old bones but my running is going to be better.
@quilteryoyo so sorry for all of the challenges regarding your relative. Our system here to deal with healthcare and mental health issues is totally lacking. Hope the AC gets fixed asap.
5 -
@Elise4270
Outside of running:
Peloton cycling - a great community of really fun people. Also love their yoga, strength and stretching classes
Hiking: We love to hike but mainly only do it when we travel - the great outdoors is so good for mental health
Walking: while listening to a good book or music
Yoga: this is life changing. You give yourself one hour to just love who you are where you are at that moment. No changing. No getting better, losing weight, blah blah. You are perfect for that moment. Needs to all the time but yoga is where I practice this best.

@Lexigraph I love the idea of cycling, but I find it very intimidating because I'm clumsy and also a huge physical coward. The idea of falling off a bike or being hit by a car just freaks me out. But I know some cyclists and when I hear them talk about it, it sounds like fun. I love the idea of being able to ride for hours and hours and it does seem like the breeze generated would be especially nice in the summer.
@Elise4270 I probably don't do enough outside of running. I do see a therapist for my anxiety and I journal pretty regularly. I've done yoga in the past, haven't done it for a while. I was thinking of getting back into it, but then . . . well, the world shut down. I've thought about doing it online, but I needed a lot of adjustments when I did it before (I'm not the greatest at seeing a movement and being able to replicate it) and don't want to hurt myself.
6/1: 1.75m
6/2: 5.5m

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it, but I hate tapering. I'm doing my best to stick to the training plan and resist the temptation to throw in extra miles. I give myself a B for the past few days.5 -

In my personal, anecdotal, and entirely unscientific opinion, I think running gives me a better cardio workout, since I just don't have the massive glutes needed to bring my heart rate up to a decent level on a bike. It also doesn't give me the same amount of endorphins, but this is probably linked more to the previous point than the mix of bad drivers, crazy e-bikes and blind pedestrians we have on our roads.
Which brings me to the monthly question.A wonderful opportunity for a Monthly Question

@Lexigraph I am quite - and I mean HUGELY - devoted to running. It is my ONE thing and it is the thing in my life that I am most in love with for myself. Of course, aside from my faith and my kids. But the running is for ME and I won't trade it for anything.
But to your point - -yep! I cycle with my son - and there have been times when my IT Band is giving me so many troubles that I've switched to the bike and had zero pain. I do think running is a better workout, cardio and otherwise. I also like it more for endorphins I have read that cycling is a great way to cross train with running with less impact. I hope this answers what you are asking.
@shanaber awesome - I know Garmin is the watch but I love Apple so much. I may just upgrade to the 3 for the cadence feature! The series 1 doesn't have that! And my battery life is horrible!
The Summer Binge videos are coming out on the aravaipa Instagram and I am hoping to get to watch them today. I probably won't - but maybe by writing it here I will remember that I want to.
@Tramboman yep! Side effects are THE WORST. That's the biggest thing for me when medicating for anything (currently it's sleep maintenance/ anxiety). I've had three different meds and have finally landed on one that seems to do what it is supposed to without also ruining my life. I hope you are able to get yours under control. Remember -- you are doing great. KEEP GOING.1
