Oh, and ordered Nathan running vest. Was on sale and had reward points. Hopefully it fits well - on my small frame. I just realized that I need way more water/electrolytes then my running belt water bottles can hold.
Just hope it’s not too heavy feeling or that it would effect my running.
It will feel heavy at first. A standard hydration pack holds around 50oz of water. That is just over 3 pounds of water by itself. Once you add the weight of the vest and anything else you might stick in it, you could easily hit 5-6 pounds. The nice thing is a well-made vest spreads the weight out so you notice it less, but you probably will notice it at first. Over time you get used to it and it sort of fades away.
That makes sense. It comes in Wednesday, so I’ll give it a try on my long run on the weekend.
One great thing is it starts out feeling heavy, but gets lighter as you go till the end where you barely notice it!
Hoping for the best!
I do not know what you wear when you run, but the top in your profile picture probably will be a bad choice. I wear a sleeveless singlet and I would not want to go less than that. Any place the straps go is a potential chaffing point. Pay attention to how it sits and rubs before you head out. Everyone's body shape is a bit different so you just have to experiment and see what works for you.2 -

Oh yes this! I went out in a crop once and had to stop after 2.5k cause I could feel it rubbing on my lower back. Nasty!2 -

Just caught up on more than 100 posts! Seems lots are suffering with the heat, but the Greek soul of this London girl is a bit jealous because the weather has turned cooler and a lot less sunny here ☹️
I’m staying on track with my alternate day, minimum 5 mile plan for June. Had a great run yesterday. I wasn’t stressing about time or pace. I just ran. It felt so comfortable that when I got home and checked my Garmin I thought it might have been really slow, but it turns out it was just one of those runs where everything clicks! Let’s see if it’s like that next time...
June goal: 75 miles

@shanaber I got the toe protectors in the mail today. Thanks so much! I can't wait to try them out.
Yay @kgirlhart! My husband was sure the post office would kick it back because the envelope was too pouffy. 😁2 -
@rheddmobile glad the curfews have been lifted!
@mbaker566 - definitely think you could save all that fur and have something made from it for the winter, a sweater or a scarf or something. Even though Hobbes has a very short coat he sheds so much, but little tiny hair everywhere! In the picture Daisy looks like she is saying 'hair, what hair? Definitely not from me!'
Have you tried a Dremel with their nails? I can't clip Hobbes' but I spent the $$ and got a special diamond Dremel bit and he is pretty good with it. His nails grow so fast though that I have never been able to keep them really short, at least not as short as I would like them to be. We are doing them 2x/wk now and occasionally an added day when he goes to doggy daycare, and that is just to keep them from hitting on the floor.
@hamsterwheel6 - I haven't had any chafing issues with my vest but make sure it fits well, snug but not too snug with nothing digging in anywhere. Also you will probably need to learn as I did how to fill the bladder and get all or mostly all the air out so it doesn't slosh around. I found that more annoying than the extra weight. Bonus - when you get to run without it you feel so light 😁
@honunui - oh how I have missed your snorkeling pictures! Love them!
Cross training day today and a good thing too. We broke heat records from many years ago and by about 10 degrees, hitting 103F today. I have appointments tomorrow morning so no run tomorrow either. It is still going to be hot but trending down a bit (yay).

So I've not run for almost 2 weeks now, and I'm finally pain free today. I did my hop test today and I can hop pain free! I'm still not running till Thursday because I'd rather have an extra 2 days off and be fine, then run too early and irritate it again.
@MobyCarp would be so proud!
EXACTLY what I thought as I read it, too. Funny, I was thinking about him just yesterday.4 -
@quilteryoyo I’m sorry you are having to deal with all of that. I hope things can work out the way they need.
@Avidkeo Oh no! Maybe you just need a little more rest.3 -
@katharmonic I feel your pain. I got up early again too. Heading out in a few to get my run in, but it's already miserable out there. Since my AC is on the fritz, the treadmill would be miserable too.
@HonuNui Glad you were able to go snorkeling again. Thanks for the wonderful pictures.
@Faebert Glad you had a great run.
Thanks @marisap2010 .1 -
@shanaber i have but even with attempts of desentization it didn't get better.
daisy i think was neglected(grooming) but she was good when i trimmed a few. her quicks are too long
didn't run last night but goal is to get a least a mile. humidity is just part of the summer here. got to suck it up4 -

Mostly cloudy and low 70s F today. I was thankful for the little breeze, but the air was so thick I was using both hands to try to stuff oxygen down my windpipe. Tomorrow is supposed to be better.
@quilteryoyo Hope everything works out OK.
@Avidkeo Try not to push it too hard too soon.
@HonuNui I missed your pictures, too. There are some talented photographers here, and I love looking at the photos.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

@hamsterwheel6 Sounds just like me. It's hard to find a good fit for anything because I am a small person. They had those belts with three bottles on sale at the running store but then I decided against it because I hate the feeling of things riding up and I could imagine the water bottles banging my butt as I ran .... I hope the handheld I got is enough!
@quilteryoyo My heart goes out to you. That is so much to deal with. I am a caretaker by nature as well and I can empathize with the emotional toll it takes. I am praying for you. Also, I hope you know that there are people here who are really so very proud of you for getting it all done and still find ways to care for yourself. Also, that run sounds awful BUT YOU DID IT!
I wanted to run tonight, but we have street tacos on the menu and I don't think a run is a real possibility. Maybe tomorrow? Except I Have to get my daughter's cake + bday wrapping stuff. She will be fourteen! This whole week has been such a debacle with her birthday stuff. I don't know why I put myself through the stress and anxiety when I know that on her birthday, she will feel so loved and special and she will be so grateful. It isn't about whether or not every detail was perfect. She'll remember how she FELT, not what she got. I HAVE TO REMEMBER THIS.
I have been doing PT to try to heal my legs - They feel soooo much better today but I still need to taper and rest I think. I don't know what mileage I want to do Saturday - I'll probably say I'm going to do a modest seven miles and end up running twenty. Just kidding. Sort of.
Now. Here's my question - - -I am an apple watch person. I have a series 1. It is still functional. When I upgrade, I don't want to have to get data on it because guess what, I don't check my email while running.
I know the majority of you are Garmin people. Why Garmin as opposed to Apple? Convert me! And then tell me all the reasons why it is silly to buy a new watch when my watch works just fine.3 -
I got up early again today to get my run in before the forecast storms show up. As I started out, it was sprinkling rain, so I came back in and put on my old shoes. Just didn't want to get the new ones wet yet. It sprinkled on and off during the entire run.
I did a 3 mile Recovery Run. It was really slow, as it is supposed to be. I felt like @Tramboman , trying to stuff oxygen down my windpipe. When I started out at 7:50 am, it was 73°F and 89% humidity! That humidity is a killer. But, surprisingly, the run wasn't horrible. I did driveway laps again. Also walked one mile.
I got the dreaded e-mail yesterday. The AF Marathon scheduled for September has been cancelled. I have 3 options - convert to a virtual race, gift the registration to an airman for 2021, or defer to a future year. Not sure which I will do. I kind-of don't want my first HM to be virtual. I doubt there will be any "live" ones scheduled anytime soon. I know we have had this discussion multiple times, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

@hamsterwheel6 I have a pretty small frame and my Nathan vest fits fine (I was also worried about the fit). The comments about the weight are right - it took me a bit to get used to it! My first run with it wasn't fun at all and I thought I wouldn't be able to use it, but I kept going and now it's not a problem. Plus, like people mentioned, it's getting lighter as you go and that helps a lot.1

Mine is another brand, but I'm short and large-busted and had similar worries. In my case, it took a bit of adjusting, and I have to stop myself from obsessively overtightening it or it makes my ribcage ache. I also discovered that crossing the two front straps diagonally instead of straight (so top strap goes into bottom clip on the other side and vice versa) stopped it moving around.
The weight takes a little getting used to but as others have said you get used to it after a few tries, and it does lighten up as you drink it.
The worst thing for me was the noise. I couldn't bear the sloshing sound with every step and it took a LOT of attempts to learn to suck the air out to stop that happening.
Having said all of that, I couldn't run in the summer without it now and even in the winter I take it on all my long runs because pockets, pockets, pockets!2 -
Starting to think that I may have set my goal a little low Just finished Wk1 Day 2 of C25K and added on another 2.03 miles towards my goal!
So glad I joined this group

Years ago I upgraded from Apple Watch 2 to Garmin 935, here is why:
1) Battery life. With my Garmin it is measured in WEEKS not hours.
2) Footpod - Gives stride/etc data + accurate for indoor and dreadmill running
3) It does all of the features I ever used on my Apple Watch
4) The display is transflective so easily readable no matter how bright the sun is
5) It is more accurate with location tracking
6) Wrist HR is way more accurate for me when compared to readings I get at the docs office
7) It does not need a data plan or a phone to work
8) Later I discovered I can do things like reverse route, go back home, waypoints, and etc all without my phone
9) Since the watch has its own GPS system my phone battery lasts WAY longer
Initially, #1, #2, and #3 were the biggest reasons for me really but over time the others became more important.8 -

6/4 – 4
6/5 – 4
6/6 – 3
6/7 – 3
6/8 – 5
6/9 – 4 with Champ
6/10 – 2 with Macy and Champ - walking
38 of 100 miles
I usually don’t count my walking, but decided to track it this month. Macy is 9 and can’t run anymore so I took her on a longer walk today instead of running with the Champ. My calves also told me a need to have a rest day.
@hamsterwheel6 My daughter and I both have Nathan vests, she is 5’1” and 104 lbs and it fits her with no movement at all, hers has two straps in the front and someone here recommended she criss cross those straps when hooking them and she said it never moves. I wear one too and after a mile you never know it’s there. I fill mine up with ice and very little water to start maybe 10 oz because the ice will melt and then your water is super cold. Also before I start running I take a sip from the hose and that’ll clear the air out and it won’t slosh as much. We also invested in a cleaning brush for the tube so it doesn’t get moldy, and a hanger that separates the sides so they dry better. I don’t clean the tubing after every run but I do disconnect it from the bag and give it a blow while biting the end to push excess water out. You’ll love it and wonder why you water so long. I saw Pastor Vincent’s comment on your top and chaffing, Skip (daughter) wears hers with only a sports bra when it’s warm and has run 22 miles in it like that with no chafing at all, hoping you’ll find the same thing.
@HonuNui cool fish!

@Camaramandy648 I don't sync my Garmin to anything but strava but it will sync to MFP, your iPhone and headphones, though I'm not sure which headphones and which Garmins (though I'm assuming at least the 245 and 265). The Forerunner 245 and 265 have the ability to download 500 songs to them.1

June Goal: 100 Miles
6/2: 6.55 miles
6/3: 7.06 miles
6/4: 6.72 miles
6/7: 10.07 miles
6/8: 7.04 miles
6/10: 6.53 miles
43.97/100 miles completed for June
607.19/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 6.5 miles today and honestly it could not have been better weather. It was 56°F with 62% humidity and a dew point of 43°. And there was little to no wind. It was just so nice. Yesterday was 83°F when I got up and 13 mph winds. I was glad I ran Monday instead of yesterday. I could not believe how nice it was this morning especially for June. It is supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow morning, but still nice and in the low 60's. I will enjoy it while I can. The high this afternoon is supposed to be 92° which is warm, but not as hot as it has been and it is supposed to be back up in the 100's this weekend and next week. I saw lots of birds out and even saw a deer crossing the road. I only saw one dog that wasn't in a fenced yard or on a leash. But it was my neighbor's dog and he was in his yard. These neighbor's don't have a fenced yard, but the only time I ever see their dogs out is when someone is out with them (usually under the carport smoking.) They have a couple of chihuahuas and a pit bull. One of the chihuahuas bit me once when I was over in the road talking to the owner so I don't like the little dogs, but the pit is nice and they are all mostly well behaved dogs. I thought it was funny this morning because I only saw the pit and he was walking toward the corner of the front yard and when he looked up and saw me heading towards him he turned around and ran back to the carport. Then he barked at me, but not until he was safely near his people and it wasn't an aggressive bark. All in all it was a great run and just a lovely morning. It was also nice having my Garmin back.
@quilteryoyo Sounds like you are having a rough time between the broken AC and the troubles with your cousin. Sending hugs and hoping everything gets sorted out soon. And I'm sorry about your HM. Since it is your first HM I would probably defer to next year and look for another HM in the winter or next spring. I don't think I would want my first HM to be virtual either.
@rheddmobile I'm glad they lifted the curfew.
@HonuNui It's so good to see you back and to see your snorkeling pictures again!
@shanaber I used the toe protectors this morning and they seemed to work well. I was really surprised that I didn't feel them. I was a little worried they would be awkward, but I really forgot they were there. Thanks again!
@Camaramandy648 I've never used an apple watch (my phone is a Samsung) but I love my Garmin. I have the Forerunner 35 which is pretty basic, but it does everything I need. And Garmin's customer service is great. I've had mine for about 2.5 years and once the band broke. I contacted them and they shipped a new band right out to me. And then last week my watch stopped vibrating for alerts. I contacted them and they said they'd replace it so I shipped it back and they shipped me a replacement. I will definitely get another Garmin when I decide to upgrade. And it does connect with MFP. Mine doesn't have music, but it works with the music on my phone and I can pause and skip music from the watch.
2020 races:

@quilteryoyo I'm so sorry about your race cancellation. It's such a frustrating feeling, isn't it?
Did a lunch time run today - it was actually cold (well, 62 degrees) which is disconcerting for June, especially since it was 90 degrees on Monday.

All Garmins can sync with MFP. You go through "Garmin Connect" and send data automatically everywhere. I sync to Apple Health, MFP, Strava, Achievement, and Run Keeper all at once and all automatically.
SOME Garmins can store music directly on the watch and those you can sync to headphones. For models that do not have music, you can still use your phone for music/etc. That is what I do.1 -
Thanks @Camaramandy648 . I am a Garmin person, but that is just because I have a bad taste for anything apple - only because I don't want to have to completely learn a new system. I like what I know and Garmin was the first fitness watch I bought.
@kgirlhart Glad you had a nice run and have your Garmin back. Our temps and humidity are supposed to be better the rest of the week. I can't wait.
Thanks for the thoughts on the HM. It is frustrating. I'm just hoping things will open up and there are some races this fall.
1 -
@quilteryoyo - sorry about your HM being cancelled. I would probably defer to next year. Although I'm sure you could do a half on your own, your first half needs to be a fun experience and destination races are the best!
@skippygirlsmom - After I run, I disconnect and rinse the hose and then put it in freezer to keep the germs from growing. A friend gave me that tip and it works beautifully!2 -

Everyone's body shape is a bit different so you just have to experiment and see what works for you.
In the pic I had taken my tank off after the run as I was at the beach, and just went in the water!
I usually have a tank or tee on around here. I will watch for that as well. Thanks!1 -
@Teresa502 Putting them in the freezer - what a great tip! I will be adopting this for sure.2
