@rheddmobile Happy Birthday!
I’m so behind on miles this week. It stormed a few nights, and then I went to my gym one evening, but you have to wear a mask inside, and I have decided running with a mask on is NOT going to work for me. I’ll have to deal with the hot weather and run outside until the mask requirement goes away. I felt like I was going to suffocate.

Happy Birthdyay, @rheddmobile !
10 miles today, featuring my new vest. Figured out the best place for the hose which was great. I must admit it did feel heavy,
To start but was glad to have it. I’m pretty sure I will get used to it. Loved being able to sip water as I ran! That alone is worth it.
The temps were good..70 with 50 humidity so not bad at all.
I went to a completely different place to run. Umstead State Park. Many trails for hiking, running, biking, horses etc. just wanted something different. I’ve biked it many times, but never ran. It’s fairly hilly, with some long climbs. I did enjoy the dirt trail surface vs the asphalt from the greenway though. It was a very fun run actually.
So yeah. Good day.8 -

I had a nice 10 mile run this morning. It started out at 67°F but ended at 79°F. So it was nice at the start, but pretty hot by the time I finished. I managed to have an average pace of 11:11 which is ok for me in the heat. So I felt good about it. No dogs bothered me and I saw some rabbits. It was a nice way to start a Sunday. Then I came home and made pan pizza in my cast iron skillets.
Happy Birthday @rheddmobile!

@hamsterwheel6 Yeah for a great run and glad you got your vest figured out.
Yeah for a great run for you too @kgirlhart . The cooler temperatures the last couple of days has been great.2 -
I didn't get a chance to post yesterday after my long run, so I'll give my report today. It was 11 miles - PR for distance.
I got up relatively early, but not as early as I had planned. I ate a banana, had a couple cups of coffee, and headed out at 7:45. It was a near perfect morning for a run - 63°F and 72% humidity at the start. It was 73°F and 57% humidity when I finished. That's what happens when you take over 2.5 hours for your run.
I decided to do the entire run by doing laps on my driveway because it would be in the shade, as opposed to the sun beating down and reflecting off of the asphalt on the road. The downside to that is that it meant a LOT of hills. The lap is around 0.33 miles, so that meant I did 33 - 34 laps! Since I am talking about driveway laps here all of the time, I took some pictures, in the spoiler below, so you can see what it looks like.
This is where I start - the area between my house and my shop.
Standing at the same spot as the first picture, just facing the other direction. This is the flattest part of the run.
The first and biggest hill.
This is a view of that hill from the bottom to try to show how steep it is. This is the reason I usually walk instead of run up this one when I am doing an "easy" run.
From the bottom of the big hill, it goes straight into this smaller hill. I have gotten to where I don't even notice it very much. I think because it isn't very long.
There's another short, flat spot at the top of that hill.
Then it is down another hill. I turn around about half way down this one, just because I don't want to run up the entire thing. It would be too much.
I did walk up the biggest hill all but one time, which takes about 30 seconds at a fast pace. Here are my thoughts as I ran yesterday.
Miles 1 - 2: This is horrible. I knew I should have hydrated better yesterday. This is going to be miserable. Sure am glad it's a little chilly this morning.
Mile 3-5: This isn't bad. I love that I'm running on the driveway. I can just zone out and know I am going to get to walk in just a few minutes. I can do this all. day. long.
Mile 6: Okay. Who poured lead in my legs? I think I need to break out the Gatorade.
Mile 7 - 8: This is a little better. I think I can. I think I can. I really need to get those headphones so I can quit singing "Wheels on the bus" over and over and over again. I'm pretty sure the original song didn't have a train on the bus. I need a new song. Oh, how about "Five Green and Speckled Frogs." (Can you tell I work at a daycare?)
Mile 9: You have less than a 5K left to run. You. Can. Do. This.
Mile 10: I really want to be done. Wonder if I can run faster to get it over with. I'd better not.
Mile 11: I REALLY WANT TO BE DONE. I am going to run just a bit faster so I can be through. Only two more laps.
Only one more lap. YEAH! I DID IT! The last mile was my fastest mile, by about 30 seconds.
I was proud of myself. It was slow, but not half as ugly or hard as the 10 miles last week. I'll call that an improvement. My splits were all within 30 seconds of either side of 14:00 minutes. Average pace was 14:22/mile. Elevation gain was 3,370 feet! Avg HR was 149, which is good as I was aiming to keep it below 150.

Well done! This post had me in giggles. I truly feel like this a lot of the time! Thanks for posting the infamous driveway pics. Now I can understand!
Great running!3 -
Long run yesterday - about 18km - cool, but by kilometre three I'd shed a layer and was in a t-shirt. Still waiting for winter to arrive... Met my running group after 45 minutes then ran with them for an hour before more chatting over coffee. The best kind of Sunday morning.
Sunday afternoon:Went to the rugby with my family (this is Miss 8) and 40,000 other people!7 -
@quilteryoyo fantastic run and PR. Thanks for the pictures. I can now imagine it when you talk about running on your driveway.
@ContraryMaryMary rugby match looks fun. Must be nice not to be in quarantine anymore. Hard to imagine when that will be for us 😒1 -
Great run @quilteryoyo! And seeing yiur driveway it doesn't seem as crazy that you run your driveway as it seemed before. It looks like a lovely place to run.
@ContraryMaryMary How fun! Looks like y'all are really getting back to normal.1 -
@quilteryoyo Great run!!!
And thanks for adding "The Wheels on the Bus" to my in-head repertoire.1 -
Yesterday, I participated in the first race that has been held in my area since the pandemic began in mid-March. It was a beautiful day to run in Burke's Garden which was about an 1 hour 40 minute drive from my house. This made the third time I have run this race. This area has several Amish families who live there and many of the children came out to watch us run by their homes - I didn't take any photographs of them since I know it's not something that most of them want. The day started clear and crisp at 54F. The half marathon course is a circular loop on a country road except for a one-mile out and back side road near the finish. There was not a lot of shade along the route so it got hot quickly. The course is a hilly one as well. I rode the struggle bus but I finished.
The packet pick-up was in the gym of the community center. Everyone had to be in single file lines and the floor was marked off with places for you to advance to every 6 feet. We first went to a table and picked a face mask out of a box and then got a bib from a stack. Then we advanced to the next table where an attendant looked up our name and then entered our bib number in the computer. We then circled around to another table where we were handed a bag with our race shirt and medal. We entered the gym on one side and left on the other. The bathrooms in the community center were not open. Back outside, port-a-potties were available and sanitizer was provided. As the race started, the director asked the 7-minute milers to line up at the front on marked spaces. Everyone else fell in behind and waves of 20 people started every 30 seconds. I think there were 215 participants.
Water was available every 2 miles on the course but instead of cups, there were individual small bottles on the table for you to pick up. There wasn't an awards ceremony at the finish but those who placed in their age group picked up their award which are cute little sheep and headed home. No frills but it was good to be back in a race setting and everyone was just so happy to be able to run together again even if it was socially-distanced!
Social-distance start
Happy Birthday @rheddmobile!

@ContraryMaryMary glad you had fun. It's hard to imagine being able to go to something with 40,000 people again!
@quilteryoyo congratulations on your distance PR. I too appreciate seeing your driveway pics and being able to picture it in my head. I can't believe the elevation gain - good for you! Totally relate to your thought processes.
@hamsterwheel6 sounds positive with the new vest. I have one I should give a better test run to.
@marisap2010 I can't imagine running with a mask either. I just wouldn't be able to do it. I'm worried about the mask requirements when our gym opens, which has not been announced yet.
Good job @Geneveremfp!
Good run @kgirlhart!

It was another cool day today, so I decided to take advantage and sleep late. It was lovely. I leisurely had my breakfast and coffee, did some useless statistics, and walked the dog. Got the run done about 11 am and it was a pleasant 63 degrees. Nothing to complain about with this one. And today marked 180 days in a row of running.
Because it was so nice, and I had a lot going on in my head, I decided to take Stella on another walk later in the day. Lots to contemplate about the world, and I didn't even know about the poison toads @PastorVincent mentions. The walk definitely helped. Stella and I walked about 6.8 miles total today so we should both sleep well.

@Teresa502 That looks like a really nice place to run. I love the start line. Looks like everyone was behaving themselves and standing where they were supposed to. Glad you got to race, even if it was a struggle.
@katharmonic Sounds like a really nice day.
Thanks everyone. I'm glad you appreciate the driveway pictures. Sorry about "The Wheels on the Bus" @Tramboman .
@kgirlhart My driveway would be a really lovely place to run if it weren't for that unforgiving hill. I do like that it is mostly shaded all morning long in the summer.2 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »@marisap2010 I don't think I could run with a mask on either! Hope you can get out to do your runs in the cooler part of the day. Just take it slower and hydrate!
But most of us DO run in a mask, in the cold months. What would kill me is how hot it would be on in the summer! I mean in 20F I have to pull the mask down to cool off a bit, never mind 90F!!!!

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 6 miles + 1min intervals :::: 15 miles
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest Day
Wednesday :::: 2-4-2 run :::: 11 miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest day
Saturday ::::: 14 miles :::: 13 miles
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 11 miles
Total Miles: 60 running out of 38 planned
Much better running week, but no quiet on plan yet. Monday I skipped the speed work because the heat index was 111 and the dew point was in the 70s. I knew there was no way I would survive the pace. Wednesday was a simple mistake, I never looked at the workout and thought it was "easy 10 miles" ah well. Saturday the heat just beat me down the whole run, so I pulled in a mile early. Not quite heat adapted yet I guess. Still not a horrible week I think!
Next week already has a schedule conflict on Monday, so we will see!5 -

Yeah, I don’t think I would care as much in the winter! Even in my gym, the track runs partially over the heated pool, so it can get quite warm. It was hot, wet with sweat, and stuck to my face, which is not helpful for breathing. 😓

i was hoping to get out more but i did manage to get 6.5 in on sunday. and it was hard. it was beautiful out. a little humid but not too bad. but the moraines. hill after hill after hill. i committed to run the downhills where possible. walked the uphills. didn't see too many people. some of the trail was single track, some grassy, some wide and easy. parts of it were unrunnable for me. most of my trail runs are not particularly technical.
speed demon got tired pretty fast. i was hoping for a few more miles but i was really ok turning around at 3.2. but somehow the garmin only recorded 6.2.
i've got to retie my hierros. they are a little loose and got a couple of blisters.
no but seriously, the hills.
i was on the sherwood segment of the ice age trail in whitewater. i hope to explore more parts of it but since we were going out in the afternoon, i was looking for a quieter segment and made the 40 min drive
