Smaller portions really works. IF works for some but not others. There is a good article here on MFP somewhere that I read that says that it works well for men but not women.
Finding what works for us individually and is sustainable long term is the key.
Tracking calories on MFP is a very easy habit to get into. I once stopped tracking (thinking that I knew approximately) and I gained 40 pounds, so a word of caution from someone who has been there done that.
It also gives a good sense of what is happening, where you can cut or add, where your nutrition numbers are. I learned that 2 tbsp of sour cream has much less calories than 2 tbsp of ranch dressing for instance.
