WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JULY 2020

Hello ladies.
I am happy to report I am down by 1.2 pounds from my ending weight in May. In May I had a slight gain. I am getting back on track and meal planning and choices are getting better. I also think the decision to lower my goal has assisted here – I was going back and forth trying to decide what I wanted my ideal weight to be. In the beginning of May I was a little under goal and I felt so much better than later on during the month. June was definitely a month of attitude adjustment. This just reinforces we are all very individual and not one goal or plan works for everyone. We must tune in to our inner voices, feelings, health situations, etc. in order to make sensible decisions for ourselves.
Barbie – Thank you for pushing us in to July. Like you I have got to get back to the basics that have served me so well in the past. Measuring cups and spoons have moved back on to the counter instead of hiding in my cabinets!
Cheri – Love the new profile picture. Great haircut!
RMarlow65 – Welcome. You will not find a more supportive group of women. Visit often and jump in when you are comfortable.
Rebecca – I just love when people have to voice their opinions. Although your friend may have been trying to be helpful. I feel FB commentary is just filled with drive-by comments and is not a good place to have a real conversation.
Katla – Glad to hear everything worked out and your test is in your rearview mirror!
Kate – I agree with you. My “first” visits were like episodes of the “Twilight Zone”. Sending positive thoughts you are able to schedule a hair appointment.
KJ – When I grow up I want to be one of your kids! Seriously. You plan such wonderful days for them. You have touched so many lives and I am sure all of those under your care have or will move on to being positive and thriving adults.
Lisa – Slow but sure wins the race! Love the Levi pic. He is getting so big!
Allie – Happy belated birthday!
Pip – Sending positive thoughts that your place sells quickly and for top dollar! Lovely pictures.
Kim – So very happy for you and your new order! Sending positive thoughts this engagement turns in to many more!
Katla – I am not sure I would be happy wearing a mask while doing yoga since so much of yoga is based upon proper breathing techniques.
Viv – So sorry to hear about your kitty.
Rita – Love the bee pictures.
Heather – There are things we can live with and things we can live without. DH’s elder daughter sounds like me. If I was home all day working I would expect (not wish) my partner would be picking up the household slack. I was so very fortunate to have found Charlie. We always shared the responsibilities and picked up the slack with either one was busier than the other. And, there is no reason why you cannot stay in touch with Sam.
Okie – Love the deer pictures. They seem to make themselves right at home!
Julie – Welcome. It helped me to cut my big goal in to little ones. And, we all want a magic bullet, but slow and sure wins the race!
Time for me to sign off for now. I hope everyone is having a great day!

Barbara I finally came to the conclusion that I can't walk the dogs with Jake. We have very different ideas of the right way to do it and he tends to give me directions about how to handle the dogs as though I have had no experience and need some lessons.
We are still staying close to home. Jake ventured out for a haircut at a time when the salon wasn't busy. Now he's worried that it might have been a mistake. This week he made the decision to postpone his July dentist appointment to October and to call the cardiologist in Seattle and ask if the tests they have scheduled for him in August can be done over here so he doesn't have to make the two hour each way trip to Seattle. The first test has already been set up for tomorrow in the same building where we go for lab work and imaging locally.
Somebody asked about bone density testing. The test is really simple but they ask that you wear clothing without metal so I had to buy a pair of sweat pants just for the test.
Rebecca, the story about your food pictures is a perfect example of why I love this thread and gave up Facebook years ago. I need support in my life and I get it here.
I met our soon to be new neighbor yesterday. She was meeting with the current owner to go to the title company to sign papers. I was so excited to see her that I babbled a lot.
I love the goal to be lighter at the end of the month. The only way I'll get there is to be mindful every day of portions and choices. Goals are no good without a plan to get there.

Tips that have worked for mePut your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories
... and weigh (with food scale) and log every bite.
A few extra things have helped me along the way:
1) Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there.
2) Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and then ... but to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.
Also, I tend not to eat all my exercise calories back.
If I've just done a little bit of exercise like a 3 km walk or something, I'll eat about 50% of my calories back.
If I've done a moderate amount of exercise like a 5 km run or 50 km bicycle ride, I'll eat about 75% of my calories back.
If I've done a lot of exercise, like a half marathon or a 100 km bicycle ride, I might eat about 90% of my calories back.
3) Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean ... and I'm a grazer. I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.
And stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going.
Regarding Cheat Meals
When I was on a mission to lose weight in 2015, I never went over my calorie limit. I stuck to the plan like glue. And I lost the weight.
But I broke it up into weeks. When I started I had 16 weeks until we were going to Canada so my plan was to stick to the calorie limit for 16 weeks and then take a 1-month break while we were in Canada. I did that and lost 15 kg in that time. After the 1-month break, I eased back into it for a couple weeks, upped my calorie limit slightly, and then stuck to it like glue for the next 16 weeks in which I lost 11 kg and took me close to Christmas when I took another break for about a month.

January's 2020 GoalsIt is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.
However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...
How to Set SMART Goals for 2020
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/smart-goal-setting
Interestingly, he talks about 7 significant areas ...
Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt, or use a monthly zero-based budget.
Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily journal, or plug in to a group at your church.
Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and remember to eat your veggies.
Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your MBA, or read a good book every month.
Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.
Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if you’re looking for a new career path.
Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often.
I've modified this slightly ...
Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.
Spiritual Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'll also include relaxation and recreation in here. Down time. I get very little of that at the moment and need more. For me that might be sleep and photography.
Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month.
Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020.
Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again!
Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.
Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.
A little bit about me ...I'm Machka and I am in Tasmania, Australia.
Some of my favourite hobbies/sports/activities include:
-- cycling
-- walking
-- hiking
-- running
-- reading
-- working on my website
-- photography
I bake, but don't cook, sew, knit, garden, etc.
Most of my day is spent working with health data, "attending" university (online now) working toward a Masters in IT, doing homework, and spending time with my husband (who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury 2 years ago) and new kitty, Rhody.
My husband is not able to work anymore, so one of his main activities is gardening. He works at that at his own pace and we've got quite a lovely garden of flowers, fruit and veggies.
This is Rhody ... an all black, 10-month old "domestic" who joined us just 3 months ago.
I joined MFP in February 2015 and promptly lost 15 kg, took a 1-month break, then lost another 11 kg. By Christmas 2015, I was down to a weight I hadn't seen in quite a few years ... since my early 30s.
In 2016, 2017 and the early part of 2018 I maintained while increasing my cycling. My sport, within cycling, is ultradistance cycling: Audax, Randonneuring, 24-hour races, etc.
Here's me in 2016 in Brisbane, QLD a couple days after cycling a 300 km event in 18 hours including all breaks.
In late 2017 and early 2018, my husband and I were in great shape and feeling good. We were cycling events and on our own and building up the distances in the hopes of going to France in 2019 to ride the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200 km event. We met on a Paris-Brest-Paris in 2003, and the 2019 one was going to be a bit of an anniversary trip.
And then on March 22, 2018, my husband had a very bad accident at work ... and life changed. He was in a coma for 3 weeks and post traumatic amnesia for 7 weeks and in hospital for 100 days. Then, a year after the accident, he had a tonic clonic (grand mal) seizure which set him back. He'll never fully recover but he's doing better then they originally predicted.
He is cycling again but gets very tired so can't cycle consistently or for long distances.
Because cycling is something we've always done together, this means I'm not cycling the ultra long distances at this point either. In an attempt to boost my exercise we've set up a home gym, and I've got into running again. I hadn't run since I was in my late teens!
But all the time sitting at the hospital and dealing with the aspects of care for my husband, plus working, plus attending university has taken its toll on my weight and I don't look like that picture above anymore! This year I have maintained my weight but I'd really like to lose a bit.
So that's me in a rather large nutshell.
July ...- Work
- "Homework" regarding my husband's situation
- Mother's surgery
- My surgery - deviated septum and turbinate reduction
- Recovery
- Resuming Uni
And as a part of the recovery, I've amassed quite a stack of books. If I can see, I'll read!

Did Biggest Loser Killer Circuit DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do an advanced strength DVD.
Barbara – when we were training the service dog, he wasn’t allowed to go in front of us or pull or anything. What we did was keep treats in our pocket/whatever and every time he walked on our side, he was given a treat and we had a “clicker” thing that we’d click when he did what he was supposed to do.
I’ll probably do my Hickory run today. Need to go to the farmer’s market since I understand they have cantaloupes that I might like, maybe stop at the Salvation Army, take the shawl I made to my girlfriend (I’ll just leave it on her porch) then go to Publix for the things I can’t get anywhere else.
Took the food out of the freezer for next week
KJ – oh, the garbage truck is super fascinating. Almost as fascinating as a “digger truck”
Love all the pics
Lanette – Aldi will only take exact change for cash transactions. Well, it’s very rare that I make a cash transaction, anyway

July 1 -- Happy Canada Day!
As seen above, my husband and I walked 4.3 km. It was 2 separate walks. One was in a little local wetlands and the other was exploring a different end of a local beach area. He was very tired by the end of the second walk ... so he napped while I worked.

Sue in WA: Thanks for your kind words. I am sooooo glad the procedure is over and done. It is stressful enough in normal times, but Covid times add a huge layer of worry and stress for everyone. :ohwell:
KJ: You are the best child caregiver I’ve ever known.
Lisa: Our county dashboard reports 30 positive Covid tests, no deaths, 2680 negative tests and 26 recovered. That leaves 4 still fighting the disease. I hope they are able to get well ASAP. It seems that our two counties on opposite sides of the country have much in common. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: Now that we’re all done with the medical procedure, the dog is calm as can be. This morning he is sleeping in, along with DH. I always go to the cashier at Walmart, even if the lines are long. I figure I’m helping them keep a job and I have no desire to use the machines to check out. :noway:
Viv: Every month of lockdown feels like an eternity. June lasted a L O N G time. :ohwell:
Allie: You, like KJ, are an awesome caregiver. Both of you focus on what is best for the elder or children who need special care.
SuziQ: DH is resistant to me going back to yoga, and his thoughts are similar to yours. Luckily, he doesn’t mind if I spend time with Arrow. There is lots of fresh air and wide open spaces at the stable.
Machka: I hope your upcoming surgery goes exceedingly well.
Barbie: I come from a family of unwanted advice givers. I work very hard to avoid it, but I’m not always as successful at keeping my opinions to myself as I should be.
Cheri: Great to see your smiling face. :flowerforyou:
Tomorrow is our daughter’s 41st birthday. We’ve already sent her present and I’m hoping to wish her Happy Birthday via phone call or Zoom.

Hi everyone - just found your thread. I'm Carla in MN and I'd love to join your little group. I'm 55 and since last fall have been gaining a bit of weight and have been pretty much unmotivated to lose it. I really need to...it's July after all and my pants are tight. I don't weight in but I use clothes as my measure of success (or failure)
Let's see - been working from home for months now and finding it very difficult to get steps in. At the office it was a long walk to anywhere including the bathroom. Here's it's like 30 steps! I have 8 grandchildren and finally got to meet the last 2 due to covid. Missed the itty bitty newborn baby stage but what can you do. I wouldn't want to risk giving them covid just to hold a newborn baby. I've also not been doing Yoga at all - I used to do it almost daily! Such a lazy bum
What I'm hoping to get out of this group is of course some friendship with like minded people but also motivation. I've lost my oomph that I used to have and I'd like to get it back again!
I am looking forward to getting to know you all!
Happy Canada Day as well to all Canadians out there near and far!9 -
Hello, I am getting back into a healthier life a happier wife. I joined in 2015 when my cholesterol and sugar got out of control. After a divorce and remarriage. I slipped into bad habits and food choices. So here we go again. Need the support and peer check to get back to healthy food choices and eating habits. Cheers and look forward to seeing and hearing everyone's victories and successes.7

Cooking goat and sweetcorn curry for tonight. Green beans.
Just had my Zoom with my girlfriends. My difficult friend couldn't manage it, but the three of us chatted away. My friend in Glasgow had to divide her bungalow into two so her stepdaughter and family could stay a few nights. She showed us the arrangements, which were very comprehensive. She used to be quite a high powered doctor, so she knows what she's doing. Her husband is 80, so she has to be very careful.
I'm still writing about the break up with my first boyfriend. Today I was transcribing a desperate poem I had written at the time when I found out my best friend was going out with him. Oh such woe.
Much love to all and welcome to the new people.
Gorgeous babies and children. Lovely mud!

Barbie - thanks for a new month!
Kelly - I want to be a kid again and be in your care.
Lisa - That was a good month for loss!
Lanette - I try to get in and out of Walmart as fast as possible too. I do use the cashiers instead though as there doesn’t seem to be as much crowding around them as there is in the self checkout. I tried not using them but the price difference at our local grocery store is huge. I bet last weeks groceries would have been at least 50% more at my local store.
Viv - June seemed like a terribly long month to me too.
Machka - I love all of the scenery pictures you post.
Carla - welcome!
Today is 🇨🇦Canada Day so I am home. Lauryn and the Grands are coming out for a while and I need to do some cleaning. There are no festivities this year to celebrate, even without Covid it is raining.
It’s been a miserable two days at work this week and I have signed up to get email alerts to job postings in the area again. I really enjoy the job but cannot handle some of the personalities. I am just looking not made any huge decisions yet.

Tracy ~ Sorry your work situation is making you unhappy.
Barbara ~ Your beach walks sounds like so much fun even though the dog pulling was not pleasant.
Heather ~ Where do you buy goat meat? I would not know how to cook it.
Got bitten by a spider this morning trying to get the screened in porch ready to be cleaned. It really stung for a while but is getting better.

Carol - My local butcher sells it from a local goat farm. It's already chopped into pieces for stewing. You cook it like beef. It tastes half way between lamb and beef. Very lean. The curry recipe with sweetcorn I got from a tv programme. It's supposed to be from Goa. Anyway, it tastes delicious.

Hey Everyone,
So I'm new to this topic thread but an old hat at yo yo dieting. I really started on Monday 29 June 2020 to refocus my efforts and gain the confidence to do it right this time. I started logging which is really an effort for me. I'm moving back home to Massachusetts in the beginning of September and I really want to at least be in Onederland before I get back there. It's a hefty goal and I realize this but it's my goal. For July I would like to get down to 220 if possible. I started the low carb lifestyle again because I did lose a lot of weight the first time doing this.
I do love to exercise so that's never a problem for me. Drinking water on the other hand....that's a problem. I generally forget lol.

Carla in MN: Welcome!!!
Sunshine: Welcome! :flowerforyou:
Heather: I’m happy you were able to Zoom with dear friends.
Tracey: Happy Canada Day!!! In long-past years we took our boat up the Pacific Coast to Canada several times, and we were in Victoria, BC for Canada Day on one of those trips. What a celebration!!!!! It is a great memory.
I have no plans so far today. It is chilly out and staying cozy inside at home has a good deal of appeal. I hope everyone has a good day today.

I looked up Canada Day to dispel my ignorance and came upon this information put out by the Canadian Government:
Canada Day (source: Canada.ca)
History of Canada Day
Canada's national holiday is celebrated on July 1.
Canadians across the country and around the world show their pride in their history, culture and achievements. It's been a day of celebration, where many festivities are held across the country, since 1868.
The Creation of Canada Day
July 1, 1867: The British North America Act (today known as the Constitution Act, 1867) created Canada.
June 20, 1868: Governor General Lord Monck signs a proclamation that requests all Her Majesty's subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1.
1879: A federal law makes July 1 a statutory holiday as the "anniversary of Confederation," which is later called "Dominion Day."
October 27, 1982: July 1, "Dominion Day" officially becomes Canada Day.
The Celebrations Start
July 1, 1917: The 50th anniversary of Confederation. The Parliament buildings, under construction, are dedicated to the Fathers of Confederation and to the courage of Canadians who fought in Europe during the First World War.
July 1, 1927: The 60th anniversary of Confederation. The Peace Tower Carillon is inaugurated. The Governor General at the time, Viscount Willingdon, lays the cornerstone of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street.
From 1958 to 1968: The government organizes celebrations for Canada's national holiday every year. The Secretary of State of Canada is responsible for coordinating these activities. A typical format includes a flag ceremony in the afternoon on the lawns of Parliament Hill and a sunset ceremony in the evenings, followed by a concert of military music and fireworks.
July 1, 1967: The 100th anniversary of Confederation. Parliament Hill is the backdrop for a high-profile ceremony, which includes the participation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
From 1968 to 1979: (with the exception of 1976): A large multicultural celebration is presented on Parliament Hill. This concert is broadcast on television across the country. The main celebrations (called "Festival Canada") are held in the National Capital Region throughout the month of July. These celebrations include many cultural, artistic and sport activities and involve the participation of various municipalities and volunteer associations.
From 1980 to 1983: A new format is developed. In addition to the festivities on Parliament Hill, the national committee (the group tasked by the federal government to plan the festivities for Canada's national holiday) starts to encourage and financially support the establishment of local celebrations across Canada. Start-up funding is provided to support popular activities and performances organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of communities. Interested organizations can make a request to the Celebrate Canada program.
1981: Fireworks light up the sky in 15 major Canadian cities, a tradition that continues today.
1984: The National Capital Commission (NCC) is given the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital.
2010: Festivities on Parliament Hill receive a royal treatment when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh join the festivities to celebrate Canada's 143rd anniversary.
2011: Their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, participate in Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill on the occasion of Canada's 144th anniversary.
2014: Canadian Heritage organizes the 147th Canada Day celebrations. As we approach Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017, the government has given the Department the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital.
2017: A wide range of activities from coast-to-coast-to-coast are held to mark the 150th Anniversary of Confederation. Attending Canada Day for the first time, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall join in the festivities on Parliament Hill to mark this milestone anniversary with Canadians.

Hello! I just started ...again. I'm 54 and at 294 lbs, I'm desperate for a lifestyle change. I would like to get friends for motivation, recipes, tips, and just whatever.
I am exactly the same! 291 last night! 5 feet 9 inches. Just started using MFP again (have been on here for years) and just started a FitBody Trail of 4 weeks2 -
Thanks for showing the Youtube videos Terri-
Did the Zumba for seniors then another 15min with a Zumba for beginners for weight loss. I will try a few more. I need something a little more than the senior but but that was a great one to start out with. Feel great and will be getting up early tomorrow to try more of them.
THANK YOU!!
For some reason I had not even thought of Youtube(I don't use it often, more for finding kids videos- like Baby Shark and Tommy Tommy )3 -

We just saw one of these in our yard last week. When you just see the tail whiz by, it can easily be confused for a snake. We have had 3 snakes in our yard in the 10 years we have lived here. One rather long rattlesnake and 2 non-poisonous ones. I could do without snakes in the yard, but I love the lizards.
I've gained a few pounds since I hurt my backside and am not able to run. Unfortunately, that coincided with the COVID shutdown. I didn't think it was that much, but I was reviewing my doc records and noticed I was 10 pounds lighter than now, back in 2016. I ran 1000 km that year. I don't think I want to go that far down, but I definitely want to get 5 pounds off and keep it off. I feel like I'm always trying to lose that last 5 pounds. It's going to be a lot harder being unable to run it off!
I had a complete blood panel done last week. My values are all mid-range, except my iron is very high. I hope it's temporary. Getting it rechecked in 6 months. Also found out I am not in menopause. :-(
My sister is improving. I think I have decided not to travel back to see her. I don't want to take something back there and infect her and everyone else in the family. They are all caring for her. It's going to be very difficult not seeing them for the foreseeable future.
I am preparing for another shelter-in-place. Our county is not doing well. They shut down bars again starting today and restaurants that serve booze have to close by 10pm. I stocked up on essentials and got my appointments taken care of. The mister and I just decided to limit our own going out for the near term, even more than we were before.
I won't like it, but I think it's coming.
Machka -- Good luck with your surgery!
Welcome to the new members and hugs to all those going through rough times.
I also love the nature pictures. They are calming.

Finally heard from my aunt. My sister did drop off the mask plus she gave me her mailing address so if I wanted to send another one I could. I will be working on new ones this week. Trying a little different one this time. Hubby has 3D printed the little air valve thing and wants me to make masks to go with them along with the filters he ordered. He wants to really change the pattern, will be at least twice as hard to make the first one but will see how it goes if I do more than just one or two.6
