katla - in the san francisco bay area (the place I know for sure) only patients, and hospital staff are allowed in the hospital NO exceptions for any reason. Birthing centers not attached to the hospital are allowing spouses but they have to stay the entire time the woman giving birth is in, NO in and out privileges.

Yes. It was like that here too in all medical facilities until June 26. Just the patient and hospital staff. No one extra unless the extra person is registered as a carer (which I am for my husband so I was able to wait with him before his hernia surgery on June 25).
Now we can have 2 visitors or people with us and we have to designate which 2 ahead of time.

I have lost 2.5 kg since Friday morning!
Amazing what not eating much can do!

Machka - CONGRATULATIONS on getting your sense of smell back. It is such a precious gift. Eventually your brain will learn which scents to dial down as the olfactory nerves will 'get used to' certain scents and ignore them. I am so used to the perfume I wear that I don't really smell it after the initial squirt, but people often comment, 'you smell nice'. The world is full of amazing scents. You will love the ocean! And just think of how food is going to taste. Oh boy!
My mother finally began to lose her sense of smell around the age of 84. She started craving hot curry! Ginger wine!
My dad lost his high register hearing in his 40s. Mine is just starting to go now, but I can still hear birdsong. DH hears high sounds that I can't, like a distant car alarm, but he has the problem of crowded rooms and distinguishing one sound from another. I don't. That's still ok for me. I get awful wax build up, as did both my parents, so I have to attend to that occasionally. It's soooooo annoying.
I'm so sorry for those of you with hearing loss. Obviously when you use an artificial device, the brain has to learn all over again how to filter. That can take time, but it will. Our brains are amazing! If you put upside down glasses on a person so you see the world the wrong way, within a few days you are seeing it the right way round.
Lots of love to all. Heather UK xxxxxxxx5 -
Machka, I’m happy you’re done with your surgery. I hope you’ll recover quickly and get the chance to have a bit of fun.😎1

Morning, ladies. I have a busy day ahead sewing spare masks, as Boris has made face covering mandatory in shops in England, and our Local Assembly First Minister is almost certain to follow suit.
Just to explain: UK is made up of 4 countries, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our central government is located in London, England, and each of the other three countries have their own Local Government Assemblies. It's similar to the structure of your Federal and State governance, but on a much smaller scale.
SuziQ: Yikes on the light bulb! 😍 Bromeliads! I'm sure you will be a great support to your friend.
Tina: Definitely tension problems. Ditto on what Evie advised.
Machka:(((virtual hugs))) and best wishes for a speedy recovery. It's wonderful that you got your sense of smell. You will get soon used to it. Mind you there are times when being able to turn it down would be a blessing. 😂
Sara and Beth: I wear hearing aids, but I have to take them out when wearing a mask. This really made me aware of how much they have helped my hearing. I have to say that since the lockdown, I often forget to put them in if I'm just about the house. I resisted getting them for a long time, but really notice a difference when I wear them.
Rebecca: 😍 Such a cutie pie! All the kiddy photos are so sweet. E
Heather: When I first got my hearing aids it was a revelation! Who knew that shopping arcades where so noisy! 😂
These are my grands last Christmas at our house.
Granddaughter (25) Grandson (17) Grandson (23)
I finished and delivered elder DGSs Birthday Project to him on Sunday. He had asked us if we would answer some life experience questions as a gift for his birthday in March. (He sent us 26 questions!) Luckily I have been working on my memoir for many years so had some pieces already written. I plan to make a less personalised version to give to the rest of the family later this year.
We hadn't seen family face to face since lockdown, and as all of us have been working from our various homes, and social distancing, DED decided to have a garden party for us to celebrate younger boy's birthday on Sunday. Granddaughter had flown home the weekend before.
Good vibes being sent out to all.

Just to clarify ... my sense of smell isn't consistent.

It's a little disconcerting but interesting!

Sharon waves of healing and hope for your friend’s granddaughter, strength, comfort and energy to your friend. Your monthly shot in the eye sounds awful. Love the story of your progress through the Labor temple. Your courage and persistence really paid off!
Sara ((hugs))
Lisa perhaps you are more like a peanut M&M than a goofy character in a TV series? Levi
Karen in VA you really lifted me up. Thanks, I needed that, as yesterday my klutziness caused me trouble with everything from setting up for BB&B Zoom, to upsetting water all over my nightstand. Pfaugh. Saved your encouraging words to my desktop for reminding when I need it. Thank you so very much. Mystery rocks, could raccoons be washing gravel off their food in your birdbath? Wonder how the next door neighbor’s cat feels about Reggie’s devotion…
Amber beautiful pics, except for the smoke. What was burning? Oh no a ship!
Barbie you must have meditated deeply to realize that about your Pyrex. Hope someone who needs and will appreciate them appears to receive your gift. Think I’ll toss that stick for Shadow to chew. Thanks! “enjoy the peaceful life we’ve built” Aah!
Welcome @skennely3163 8 days down, 6 to go, you can do this!
Machka “Dodgeball is an evil sadistic thing” Amen, sister AMEN!…
Annie, thanks for the reminder of practicing along a wall!
Katla ditto what you said to Tina in CA
Evelyn “teeth looking forward to spa time”
SuziQ your friend will be grateful for the respite and won’t care about the light fixture or electrician. Remind me the name of that beautiful pink bromeliad? Have an aloe very that has sprouted 3 or 4 pups, will follow your advice and repot
Carol hope your infected glad stops hurting NOW.
Michele any tips/tricks/best practices for your meringues? I’ve been wanting to whip up a batch for my gluten free friend but have been a little hesitant.
Kim “there must be a way to suit family up” so they can be with their loved ones. You are so right. My friend was able to suit up and hold her mom’s hand to the end, thanks being under hospice rules and not those of the care facility. A blessing.
Tracey is the “person making the rules” an owner? Is there no HR rep? In absence of written HR policies, written promises are your best chance. Good for you!
Machka “hit in the face with a freshly mown hay field” WOW what a sudden and dramatic change. No wonder you’re looking for the volume control knob. But very very happy for you!
Rebecca Athena Rose is afoot!
Terri love the pics of your grands and their Christmas toys

Sara ... I only read lips, so the masks have been my undoing. I downloaded an app called “MyEar.” It uses voice recognition to transcribe others speaking. It’s not perfect but has been helpful. I’ve also been able to use it up next to the computer for zoom calls and live feed video. It’s for iPhone only though.
The App sounds like a really good idea. I didnt realise how much I relied on seeing peoples mouths until I could no longer see them!Snowflake1968 wrote: »Beth - I’ve noticed our residents that need to see our lips are really suffering. We can’t take the mask off to assist at all.
We have an issue with this at work - I work in mental health and support people who are in crisis, and its very hard to come over as supportive with empathy when they cant see your face! We are now approved to have clear face shields instead.

Sara628588 & Beth: DH has some hearing loss but not at a scary level so far. His dad had hearing problems for many years. DH has tried hearing aides in the past but stopped using them. He seems to be doing okay for now without them, although he talks about getting new ones. I hope you two will both find a satisfactory balance. DH, too.

Thank you for that. I am also put off by so many people saying how difficult it was to 'get on' with hearing aids..... My dad has had a right muddle with his

Practical “jokes” Does anyone else think they are flimsy excuses for meanness? Or am I just a spoiled wimpy only child?
Barbara
It depends.
For example, I do not like vegemite. It's awful! The only way I've been able to tolerate it was once on a liverwurst sandwich when I was really hungry. I've been asked about vegemite along the way, of course, and have told people what I though of it. Yech!
On the day that I became a permanent resident of Australia, my work colleagues gave me a lovely bouquet of flowers, and a gift bag with an Australian flag, Tim Tams .... and a tube of vegemite!!
Given my comments about vegemite, I thought it was funny. We all laughed. I brought it home and I think my husband may have used it.
Little practical jokes like that are harmless and amusing. No one was hurt. I enjoyed the flowers, ate the Tim Tams and have the Australian flag up in my home office.
When I became an Australian citizen, my new work colleagues "filled" my office cubical with green and yellow (Aussie colours) balloons. Again, I wasn't upset. I was actually pleased that they thought of me on that day. And no harm done, I just had balloons floating around the place for a while.
Various ones at work support different AFL and other sports teams, so occasionally a jersey or scarf or something from a rival team will mysteriously replace the jersey or scarf or whatever hanging in someone's office for a day or two. Or things like that. Nothing stolen, nothing destroyed, and everything replaced in short order.
Those kind of practical jokes are all right. No one gets hurts. Nothing is damaged.

Did Cathe Friedrich’s Afterburn DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Cathe Friedrich’s You Can Do Anything for a Minute DVD
Rebecca – I haven’t seen PJ either since he was 4 months old. At least you get pictures. But I love seeing how Athenia is growing and figure PJ is probably doing the same things. So adorable
When Vince had to go to the hospital recently, (this was at the start of the pandemic) I said to the EMS “I’ll go with him”. They had to remind me that I couldn’t! Oh, that’s right. That was so hard for me, to just sit at home and not know what was going on. For a while no one extra was allowed in the hospital. Now each patient can have one visitor
M – congrats of being able to smell again! And that weight loss!
Barbara – the one thing I’ve found about the meringues is that when you’re whipping the egg whites, your bowl needs to be absolutely clean. No hint at all of any type of grease, even if you can’t see it. What I do is put my bowl in the dishwasher first. I have heard that your dish (the one you whip the egg whites in) should be cold, but I’ve never tried that. Also, I found that when baking the meringues, use parchment paper. I tried using my silicon mats, but some of them stuck to the mat. Not a big deal, really, the mats aren’t hard at all to clean. Maybe I’ll try using them again.
About hearing: with my diminished hearing in the one ear, I do find that it is hard to hear someone if there is background noise. Like a radio playing. I doubt there’s anything that can help that.

Barbara I don't care for practical jokes that are disguised hostility and at someone's expense. I suspect that is what you are talking about.

Kim, the situation with your friend’s mom is exactly what happened with my next door neighbor. She went into a rehab facility with a broken shoulder during the height of the shutdown. The children already couldn’t visit And had to just rely on phone calls as their mother caught COVID and passed away all alone.
Pyrex. Funny story. My college friends threw me a wedding shower in 1975. Every single present, without fail, was a casserole dish. It was crazy. All but one gift was the white corning ware with the little blue flowers - one dish per gift. But one was a three piece nested set of Pyrex. Each size was a different color. Harvest gold, avocado green, and probably orange. The large and small ones are long broken. I still have the medium, green one. I kept those three Pyrex since it seemed most practical to have three different sizes and took the corning ware to Belk where I exchanged it all for store credit and got things like towels and sheets. I don’t use the Pyrex casserole dish often, but occasionally it is the one I need.
Practical jokes Some, like the ones Machka described are harmless and fun. I agree with Barbara, however, that many can be mean. I will never forget when male colleagues of mine decided to play a game with my keys. One borrowed them, said he gave them to another to return. He said another had them. It just went on and on. I had a huge project I needed to be concentrating on snd had no time for games with my keys. I was furious and they eventually knew it. One of the participants was so sorry that he bought me an apology gift. The others just thought I overreacted. I also was not pleased when my cousin thought it would be fun to jerk my chair out from under me. My tailbone hurt for a solid week. I was probably 12 or 13, and I still remember it. Luckily, she grew out of that phase. She is flabbergasted that she ever thought that was funny.

It has been almost overwhelming at times ... like the grass one. After enjoying the smell for a few moments I did wonder how you turn the volume down when you need a break.
Machka in Oz
I have a very sensitive sense of smell, even with all my allergy/congestion issues. Perfume-y things are the worst for me. I can smell even the slightest scents of those. The one positive about wearing a mask in public is that if it's really smelly, just put on that mask and no one thinks anything of it.
Enjoy the smells.

Kim: I am so sorry for your high school friend’s loss. I wonder why she was unable to see her mom during her illness. Were they trying to protect your friend from getting the disease? I agree that family members should be able to “suit up” to prevent getting the disease and still stand by with their loved one if the danger is not too high. I don’t know whether that is actually possible. I wonder whether linked TV’s could provide a connection. I can’t imagine abandoning my husband or another family member. It would be heart breaking.

When the mister's father passed away, they had no problem suiting up the mister so he could go into the facility and clean out his father's room. I don't understand why they cannot make accommodation in the cases of a loved one being so ill too.

Thanks for all the comments on my sewing machine. I changed the tension around and it's much better, but I think the curtain hemming is just too much for that little thing to handle. I ended up hand stitching the hem every few inches or so. It's not perfect, but it looks a lot better than the fraying unhemmed things they have been for 10 years. Yes, I've avoided it for 10 years. I really don't like to sew.
Still smells of burning plastic outside. Will hide away inside again today. Maybe I'll get the other 4 panels hemmed.

My local radio station is having people call/text in if they have ever been caught in the nude.

Nude Day is funny! Only because DH and I were being silly this past weekend and decided to go skinny dipping since no one is here and it’s been so hot. Got halfway to water then bam 💥 lightning storm! Killed that idea! So told him because is today is nude day we will have to try again today!

Been out of sorts with colitis acting up this week, but recovering. Back to every day pills instead of 3 a week. I’ve tried going down several times so far with the same results. Med is so expensive; trying to reduce my cost but don’t appreciate the results. Money or sick, I’ll find a way.
We had a visitor yesterday. I had heard of these but never seen one. Enjoy the Horned Lizard or as Southerners call them “Horny-toads”!

I’m sorry your son has been hurt. Whiplash injuries can be dangerous. I hope your son gets the medical help he needs and recovers well & soon.2 -
Thank you! Whiplash actally takes a long time. Even when young and healthy life is uncertain.2
