Dellafayfox: We live beside the Columbia River and have relatives in eastern Oregon who we visit once in a while. I was trying to figure out the location of an island in the river above Bonneville Dam. DH told me that he’d point it out the next time we travel that way. It may be quite a while before we travel. :ohwell: :flowerforyou:
I like your masks. One of our shopkeepers here in town has been making masks for sale. It appears that we’ll all be using masks for some time to come and this is a good way for talented sewers to make an important contribution to overall health. :flowerforyou:
Debbie: Your masks also look great.
To both of you:
Grocery stores in our area are requiring masks. Remember the old saying, “No shirt, no shoes, no service?” Now we need to add “No mask, no service ” to the list. The two of you and many others are helping to keep people safe. Thank you both!

masks are required everywhere here too- most stores enforce it really well, a few don't do it as much as they could.1 -
dellafayefox wrote: »Debbie Those are very nice looking mask. I like the idea of the velcro in the back. For walking, I use a super stretchy nylon/spandex compression neck choker that is mainly for neck support and I added extra material to it that pulls up for mask part. It is easy to wash and dries quickly.
I started doing the Velcro ones when I ran out of the elastic I had on hand- I had 25yrds of Velcro I had picked up a few years ago at a yard sale- didn't know what I would use it for but knew I would and was a great price. Ran out of that too so had to order more of both. Bought extra- won't run out any time soon. Same with the fabric. Spent $45 last week but have enough for a few 100 more if not more.2 -

Camping I have been camping since a child. Started with tent camping, then parents got a pop up but kids had to be in tent. Then parents went to a small tow but I had moved out by then and married my first DH. Hated camping by then cause I had 3 kids and no one helped cook or sweep out sand or anything. Not a vacation for me. What really killed it was when my X decided to drive to Florida and stay at a campground in a tent. The campground cost the same per night as a hotel/motel in the area and it was cold at night so had to go out and buy new sleeping bags for everyone. Never went camping with second DH until we went full time in an RV. First year traveling across country and site seeing and now hosting for the last 2 years in Roswell, NM. Chores are shared this time. I retired at 61 and am now 64 and feels like one long camping vacation so far.

Beth - They are nice, but no way worth that kind of money. They would be half that price over here. Try ringing or emailing. It never hurts to complain.
Rebecca - I'm a bit like you. Once I start cleaning I have to do it properly. That's another reason I have a cleaner. Her standards are different to mine, but my house looks presentable. She only has two hours every two weeks! I hate the way she moves things though! I am very OCD about the placement of objects and hate them out of position. I think she wants me to know she's been there and cleaned!
As a child I was severely OCD to a debilitating level, and a little of that has stayed with me. It's not a problem now, but occasionally I notice it.
I was touched yesterday that the cleaner turned up with her own, much superior, hoover, in order, she said, to get into the edges. I didn't see her when she finished so I will text her to thank her for taking the extra care.
The sun is shining this morning. I don't know if the family stuck it out yesterday in the tent. It was HORRIBLE weather! They often switch their phones off when relaxing, so I didn't enquire.
I used to camp out all the time with my parents as a teenager. Mostly in Europe. When I was first married we also camped. And a couple of times when my kids were young. Purely through tight finances, not from choice. My honeymoon was camping for a month! It often rained and rained and rained. And rained. Nothing is more miserable.
I spent my young years envying like crazy the 'posh' people in the nice hotels.
Caravans are a big step up and it amuses me that you Americans call it camping. No way! Nor are shacks camping. Nothing with a roof and a toilet is camping.
The only tents I have been in since are the mega luxury kind with their own toilets and showers, a huge, gorgeous bed and a nice young man to bring you tea and biscuits in the morning. Kenya, and Rajasthan in India.
These days both DH and I have to go to the loo three or four times a night. The thought of zipping myself out of a sleeping bag and a soggy wet tent is not appealing. No way. Even a dry tent. You need a very strong bladder for camping.
Time for tea!

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that traveling takes so much mental and physical energy. The change in how I start, and end my days is messed up. I also get up 3/4 times a night. I love my own space! Sometimes husband stirs after I get up. I make noise so he knows I am in the bathroom. Once or twice he has come into the bathroom not knowing I am on the toilet! Scared the heck outta both of us! I physically have issues when I travel. My sleeping is off as well as my digestion. It usually takes a couple days for my body to acclimate.
Cleaning and being particular is a good thing in my book. My husband likes to move items just a bit. I normally group items in groups of three, (for some reason). I am excited for our management company putting in bids for the driveway, and painting the house! Now for the owner on the east coast to make decisions.

DDIL sent us loads of photos of this year's camp, some of which look decidedly wet, but this one is a medley of the chicken petting. Lots of kids and families there having a great time together.
Here is Bea doing her favourite thing, eating.

Just a couple pics of the Renaissance camping days. Boys were young! The one with husband lying down is just him putting his handpleated kilt on!
The boys had loads of fun.

Our vet's assistant called and requested a photo of our old dog's backside. He has a cyst of some sort. I sent it to her so the doctor could see. Haven't heard anything back yet.4

Katla Eighteen Mile Island, west of Mosier, was often called "Chicken Charlie's Island" because Charles Reither lived on Eighteen Mile Island from 1915 up until his death in 1963. Chicken Charlie's Island is in reference to a chicken ranch around 1904, but local historians claim there were never chickens on the island. Also, it has been called Tom Selleck Island and Tom never owned or lived on it. No one knows how that rumor started. It is easily seen from the freeway. Islands fascinate me but I can see no advantage for living on one like 18 mile Island. Eighteenmile Island borders the Oregon side of the Columbia River at River Mile (RM) 174, just downstream of Mosier, Oregon and four miles upstream of Hood River. The Dalles, Oregon, is located 16 miles upstream and The Dalles Dam, once the location of the Long and Short Narrows of The Dalles, is located 18 miles upstream.
I will always call it Chicken Charlie's. Why Charles was called Chicken Charlie is a mystery to me. There is no record of him being a coward or ever having chickens. I love old mysteries and hope I can find info someday why he was called Chicken.

Faye: Thank you for the story of Chicken Charlie. It is hard to imagine living alone on an island for so many years. The time span between 1916 and 1963 is a long one. I've never heard about it before and it is nice to learn a bit of Oregon/Columbia River history. THANK YOU!2

Beth: The bouquet is nice enough, but inferior to what was ordered so I would definitely contact them to query it. I think some Mail order florists bank on the recipient not knowing what has been ordered. We had the same problem with flowers ordered from New Zealand by my BiL for DMiL for one Mother's Day. The flowers were from Interflora! and they bore little resemblance to what had been ordered, were barely alive. I went straight to the shop that delivered them and demanded a refund, and told them that it was going on Facebook if I didn't get it. They paid up and we bought mum a lovely bouquet from M&S.3

Lisa, I loved your description of camping as pretending to be homeless. Someone once told he that her idea of "camping" was staying at a two star motel that didn't have HBO. I like my own house best and a nice motel second. When I first met Jake, he asked me if I like camping and when I said no, he was delighted because he didn't like it either.
When we travel, I like cabins best, especially relatively remote cabins.
Then nice B&Bs, especially those where you've got a certain degree of self-sufficiency.
There was a time when we'd stay wherever, but I'm getting more fussy.

I've packed up my work stuff in preparation to go back to the office this week.
It's been such a happy, relaxed, delightful, fantastic 4 months ... now that's coming to an end.
But maybe there will be a second wave and we'll be sent home again.
I'm not taking back as much as I brought home ... just the essentials. If I have to move home again, I'll be ready to go in a matter of minutes!!

When I was talking to my former sister in law(delivering the masks she ordered from me) she said their office is not planning on opening until 2021. She works for a city tourism. She works at home four days a week and only goes to the office once a week to get the mail, pay the bills, etc.

We're pretty much back to normal here except that we've got to keep distance between each other.
I stopped in at the office to drop off my computer equipment today. They've got signs up everywhere and stickers on the floor indicating where to walk and how far apart to be.
It was nice to see my work colleagues so that makes it a bit easier.
Tomorrow I'll go in for my first real day back.

We camped when we first got married. It was the only way we could afford a holiday. DED was only 6 months old the first time I camped. It was in a small ridge tent. I was more into Youth Hostelling as a teenager. Eventually we had our own frame tent and raised camp beds. We camped in France when the girls were older. In later years I much preferred staying in a hotel.

Hi ladies, Is this a closed group? Don’t want to barge in. Your topic appealed to me. I am back after a long break. I am a Canadian grandma. Anyway, hope you are all able to stay safe and well.
This is just a thread in a subforum of MFP's forum.
Anyone can comment! But we especially like hearing from women over 50.
Welcome here!

Oh, Faye! There’s my beloved mountain again at the last! I never tire of pictures or surprise glimpses of her.
Suebdew! you’re the first people I actually know to have corona virus, and I have a wide circle of online and not acquaintances. I hope your progress continues good. It can be a tricky and deadly disease.
Katla, when the very rare urge hits me for chips (usually tortilla chips), I look around for the lunch-size bag, indulge and log. Looking at the price tag on my little splurge also keeps me from over-indulging. I also get those tiny one-serving pots of ice cream. Again, only one and I only go to the store or order about once every three weeks. And only one indulgence per trip. It makes those things manageable without my feeling deprived.
Beth, those flowers would be totally unacceptable to me at that price and looking at what was promised. Did you pay by credit card? I’d put a hold on that charge.
Debbie and DLFK, you may have gone into starvation mode, with your body thinking it needs to hold onto every calorie because food is scarce. Try bumping it up to 12-1400 to see if you start losing again. And go crazy with fluids. That’s another key to good weight loss figures.
Cleaning: I do fine for a month or so after my daughter or granddaughter get things shop-shape. Then an incident happens that’s overwhelming either because it’s beyond my abilities or I can’t figure out what the first step would be. I find myself paralyzed and can do almost nothing. Sometimes I try getting one small area done, but I have to stop. I’m overwhelmed. Finally I end up here.
That’s where I am now. It affects my overall mood and I tell myself I’m lazy. I COULD do something and I’m not. I avoid looking too closely at my motives for fear of what I’ll find. I can’t afford a cleaner. My granddaughter drives 100 miles to help me and puts in a whole day. My daughter, who has the autistic son, has only weekends free, and she really wants time with Nick and her husband too, so I hate to even ask. Can any of you help me get a handle on this? My therapy at is only for med management at present. My 12-Step groups aren’t very helpful right now. Too few women. It’s mainly old guys who say they have trouble relating.
Oh Faye! Oh Heather! How much I relate. Being in pain from this a good part of my 77 years is sad. I’m usually a happy person, and so I think I’ll avoid any more about this and move on to something I LOVE!
Camping! Just as Ratty in Wund In the Williws” loved messing about in boats, I love messing around about a campfire. I’m a decent campfire cook, and have managed a full meal the time I forgot the pans. It involved lots of foil, ziplock bags and a buck knife. The only thing I need to feel secure camping now is something the right height and stable enough to lean on and leverage myself up off the floor. I particularly adore camping near the ocean where I can mindlessly listen to the waves come in- the waves come in- the waves come in for hours and think of almost nothing. That is true peace, especially if I have chai tea mix or sugar-free hot chocolate along.
Wow! Dint know where all that came from. Being able to post in a non-judge mental yet interested forum can be powerful. I love the camping pictures of kiddos. My girls adore camping, and always have. Well…there was that period when middle daughter was an early teen and would NOT camp anywhere she couldn’t plug in a hairdryer.

Sharon - my daughter suffers terribly from anxiety and a lot of it comes from mess and what people will think of her. I have gone several times over the years and helped her clean and organize and if one thing goes wrong she loses control and motivation. She decided this past winter that she needed at least one room that she could relax in without mess and chose her bedroom as that is what she had the most control over without the kids and husband messing it up. She went through all of her clothes and her husbands clothes, organized her books and decorated the room. She was able to keep it maintained for a month and then did her daughters room, kept both up for a few weeks and took care of her sons. She then moved to the main level and is struggling again because she is the only one to keep it up and she finds it so stressful again, but she’s done well at maintaining the upstairs. She says she has just made it a thing to do every morning, make the beds and tidy up. She also forces herself to put her laundry away immediately after it’s done. She does procrastinate in doing it though.
2 -
I find I have to start by doing one thing. Pick up one thing and put it away. Make one appointment (which usually involves a phone call and I do not like using the phone). Write one paragraph/section/page. Tidy one shelf. Gather up all my "dirty" clothes and toss them in the washer. There is something about doing a load of laundry that makes me feel I've accomplished something today.
And today ...
I've taken my husband to his follow-up appointment.
I've dropped off my computer equipment at work.
My husband and I have gone over some documents we're working on for a personal project. I think one of those documents is ready to send. The other needs some more work.
I do need to do that load of laundry.
I need to make two appointments (two phone calls!!)
And I should take a look at my homework.
But I feel like napping right now.

I keep planning on eating 1200 calories one day but just never seem to do it- can't get myself to eat just to get the calories- worry about going over and keep going over. I think I will actually plan the day- it will be Thursday- we are going to my parents and plan on bbq'ing for them(we will pick up stuff to grill on our way up) and plan on picking and eating a lot of black berries-
First picture
is part of the black berries- two 100ft rows of thornless berries for him and I to pick-
the second is him last year next to the popcorn. My parents are amazing. Mom is 77 and dad is almost 84- they still plant a huge garden- this year it is smaller than before but still well over 1/2 acre and do most of it by themselves. I wish I lived closer so I could help more- hoping to totally retire soon so I can spend at least half my time up there. That is where I want to be all the time.4 -
It is the end of the day- you still have about 300 cal to use. What would you eat/drink???
I am at 728 now and just finished dinner.0 -
dlfk, beautiful pictures. Those plants look super healthy. I’ll bet your folks till that soul really well in the spring.
Machka, I've had some success with your method. As long as it doesn’t pull me in so deep that I get frustrated, I do fine. It’s like a beach with a rip tide. As long as you stay away from where it begins, you’re fine. But one thoughtless step beyond, and I’m drowning, with no one to call on anymore. At least not here. Everyone else works.
Snowflake, I’ve tried your daughter’s method, but let one cat barf on the bed, and after I’ve stripped off the dirty blanket and scraped off the mess and put it in the washer (the blanket, not the mess - lol!), I’m done. Anxiety can just flatten me. We’re working on adjusting my meds, but so far I don’t notice anything - yet. Med changes take time, I know.
’Night, Everyone! I’ve worn myself out thinking about it.3 -

Belated welcome @tripsmom3! Our Better Bones and Balance coach recommended resistance bands and they really help build strength, IF you use them. With the wide band above our knees we did sit to stands and all kinds of weird sideways or crescent walking. Really made the “bacon sizzle”. We used the narrow bands for presses, pushes, rows and (with a dowel) hip hinges. I sure miss that class!
Belated welcome @josephinebowman Gwendolyn from VA
Ants: when they appear, we “puff” food grade diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of the house and in any cracks between the deck and the outer walls. Wear a mask as you don’t want to inhale the dust when it’s clouding. Dogs don’t lick it nor do we put it out thick or wide enough from them to get on their paws, just a thin line at the base of the house does it.
