I’ll do the challenge for @PastorVincent . Yesterday I dedicated my run to him.
Tired to watch some of the funeral today but had to go get my son.
It’s still quite hard to believe.3 -
Nice race report @katharmonic ! You did fantastic! Love that telling your friend you were running a race gave you extra incentive to not slow down. I often have the same thoughts toward the end of a run/race. @PastorVincent would have been proud.
@rheddmobile You did great! Lovely pictures! Thanks for sharing.

One line that stuck with me was that his sermons were always about loving God and loving people, and if we would do that, it would make Vincent happy. So, I'm thinking in addition to a Boston Marathon running during the week of Sept 7 - 14, that maybe we all do a random act of kindness in his name too - and share with us what it was, if you want.
I couldn't get the earlier link to work and saw your new link too late so I didn't get to watch. Great idea to add the random act of kindness in @PastorVincent's honor to the marathon week!
@katharmonic - great virtual 5k run! All your hard training is paying off!
Love everyone's pictures from the past few days.
I was supposed to do a virtual HM this morning but with the forecasted rain and wind we decided to wait until tomorrow morning. I went out and did a slow 4 miles today in between morning showers.6 -
5 miles this morning. I am up for trying the 26.2 during Boston week for @PastorVincent.2

I'm sad I was asleep when his funeral was happening, glad some of you got to see it.
For an introvert, he was definitely open with us. We knew so much about him and his struggles. His openness and willingniss to talk about what he was going through really helped me so much.
I am going to miss him so much.
So update on me. Its been 6 weeks since I last ran. Calf is definitely healing, incredibly slowly. I think it will be another 4 weeks before I'm back to it. I see the physio tomorrow, and suspect that I'll be starting strength training. Generally my calf is fine, just get the occasional niggle or pain. I went for a walk today, and got to 4.7k before I was feeling it. That's progress, a week ago I only got to 3k.9 -
Y’all, you can still watch the funeral by following the link.1

Sunny and low 60s F this morning. Only bird sounds I heard were blue jays and red tail hawks. Starting to plan my "Virtual Boston with Vincent." I'm pretty sure that I can do it in under 6 hours of actual running, even though it will be spread across 6 days. Need the weather to cooperate, though.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020

Online forums and social media make it much easier for introverts to interact. In person drains me so much more than online.
Introverts need to recharge alone usually. Extroverts get energy from being around others.5 -
Hi all, did my long run this morning. Glorious running weather; some sunshine but fresh and breezy too. Even managed to sprint the finish and it felt so good. Recent events have reminded me to be grateful for everything I have and all that I can do. Feel like I followed that today. Planning to head out again for a walk/run with the kids for couch to 5k.
Have a good Sunday everyone x

Last run for Aug. today was 8.0 miles. I haven't posted most of my runs and it hasn't been a great month. This last run was especially bad because I had an old problem (runner's diarrhea). At one point, I turned back towards home and was able to keep everything together until getting the 8 miles done as planned... but did loops and such close to home so I could make it back in a few min. And it slowed me down of course.
At one point - keeping in mind I'm on streets I don't normally run - I went past a house with a fence, but no gate. Instead, there was a big opening so hey could drive cars in and out of the driveway. And on the fence was a "Beware of Dog" sign. They had a pit bull with a big opening (big enough to drive a car through) in the fence and not tied up. So when it came out into the street trying to attack me, I almost had to stop it. It's the first time I've drawn my pistol while running. I stopped and it stopped as well, but only 6 feet away as it stood there barking. Way too close. I shouted at it as it stood there barking, and as I slowly moved further away, it finally retreated. If it had taken even a single additional step towards me, I would have stopped it. People need to keep their dogs restrained. Posting a sign does nothing to help when you let the dog run freely into the street.

There have been quite a few questions about when to replace your running shoes and while on an REI forum I saw the mention on this article. It is pretty good, concise and covers all the main points.
https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/replace-shoes.html
I will post my update and comment later today...2 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Glad you were able to have an "uneventful" run. Glad you didn't have to "stop" the dog. I know if you did, it would have been to protect yourself, but I would have hated it for the dog, since it isn't his fault that the owners are irresponsible. Can you report them to animal control or something? Yeah for being 10 miles over your goal for August!2

I got out the door at 7:20 this morning for my long run. It was 70°F and 100% humidity! It was a real struggle today. The first mile wasn't too bad...LOL. It was foggy/cloudy, so the sun wasn't beaming down. Other than that, it pretty much sucked. My legs were fine, I just had a hard time breathing and not overheating. I'm allergic to ragweed and I'm pretty sure there was a lot of pollen in the air today. It was a slug fest - like a turtle running through peanut butter mixed with cold honey under water. I did manage to average 13:33 min/mile, even walking more than I normally would have. So, I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I ran 7 miles and walked one. Then, after lunch, I walked another fast mile with the dog so I could count it toward my total too. This is probably my last run/walk for the month. I'm taking mom and dad to see their great grandson tomorrow, so won't have the time or energy for a run.
Eight miles over my running goal for the month. I'd say my 61st year is starting out pretty good on the exercise front. This is my highest mileage month ever and I mean EVER!
Also 18.25/20 miles walked. Twenty was a number I just picked out of my hat, so I'm happy with that.

Thanks for the info on shoes @shanaber. I seem to go through them depressingly quickly. Need to be better at finding good bargains.
Knocked out another .8m with the kids doing Couch to 5k this evening to end on 101 miles for the month.
I’m tempted to round it up to 105 tomorrow. Will have to see how I feel. But if not, see you all in September!

I dedicated today's 10 mile run to @pastorvincent. It's still hard to believe he is gone. It was a pretty good run. It was hot and humid starting out and the dew point was 69° or 70° depending on which weather app I looked at. I thought about how he always said that the dew point was so important and I never knew that before. I was pretty slow too and thought about him reminding us that we will be slower when it is humid and the dew point is high. It was a fairly uneventful run but I did see a cardinal near the park. And the about .25 miles from home it started raining. It wasn't a lot of rain, but it was a nice cool down at the end of the run.

I went to take Shadow out this morning and there was a chihuahua that kept running at us. It would retreat when I yelled but if I tried to start walking it would run over again. We never left the driveway. Turned around and went back inside. I'm not going to have a repeat of a few months back of her getting attacked by small dogs.
I decided to rest today and will try again tomorrow morning.11 -

@quilteryoyo I am not sure we have an animal control. It's a small town and the last time I reported issues with stray dogs to the PD, it was just ignored. That was actual strays / homeless, though, and not loose dogs. And that was about a year ago when they killed a woodchuck in my back yard.1 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner I’m glad you didn’t need to pull your gun on the dog, but you need to protect yourself. I hate dogs running loose.2

Heat has finally broken for a few days but it will be back with a vengeance I fear at the end of this week. I took advantage of the nicer weather and finally complete my ISS 10k yesterday. It wasn't as fast as I would have liked (thought I would be back to my 'normal paces by now) but it is done.
I hit my initial goal last Sunday and surpassed my stretch goal yesterday with one run left tomorrow for the month. I also surpassed my 1000 miles for Run the Year at the beginning of the month and have now passed 1100 miles!

@rheddmobile – thank you for letting me know that we could watch the replay of @PastorVincent’s memorial service. I’m glad I did. He was just the man whom he portrayed himself to be here. He enjoyed eating at Red Robin. After running a race, he would circle back and run Mrs. PastorVincent to the finish line. I loved his slogan of Love God and Love People and regardless of whether or not your shared his religious beliefs, he still loved you.
@shanaber – congratulations on completing your virtual 10k! Thanks for setting up the September thread.
This weekend was supposed to be the Asheville Half Marathon. Like everything else, it eventually had to go virtual. Two friends and I signed up to run it before the pandemic hit. We were going to drive to Asheville (about 1 ½ hours) and run the course route yesterday but due to Hurricane Laura it was a wet and soggy morning so we elected to run in our local city this morning. As my almost-neighbor @quilteryoyo mentioned, the humidity was a killer. 70F and 100% humidity with a dewpoint of 70. We slugged it out but it wasn’t pretty. My goal for the month was 130 miles and I’m ending the month with 144.48 miles. Congratulations to all who hung in there this month!8 -

Thank you so much for the kudos on my virtual 5k. You guys are all so supportive and wonderful.
Congrats @teresa502 on your virtual half. That humidity! Sounds pretty miserable so huge congrats to you. I really like that t-shirt by the way.
Good job getting your 10k done @shanaber, glad you got some nicer weather.
Nice work @Faebert on your mileage this month!
Excellent job on meeting and exceeding your mileage goals this month @kgirlhart, @quilteryoyo, @shanaber, @Teresa502 and @skippygirlsmom! And I probably missed some of you so great work to everyone who kept going in what was for many of us a very hot August.

I took another morning to sleep a little extra and ease into the day. I really needed to get work done so I decided to go get a lovely breakfast of a bagel with smoked salmon and head to work and run later. The weather was much improved here today too so when I finally got out there about 4:30 pm it was 70 degrees and low humidity. Very pleasant. I ran from the trail near the grocery store so I could pick up food right after and head home. Although I could have done more miles I really wanted to get home early enough to walk the dog, eat, and relax so I kept it short.
So, I didn not do a long run this week, my longest run was less than 4 miles, and my mileage was only 18 miles for the week. I'm not going to feel (too) guilty about that because I clearly needed the rest and I'm swamped at work. I said at the beginning of this month that it was going to be busy and I set my goal very conservatively at 100 miles. I thought midway that maybe I'd up that but as it turns out it was right-on. I maintained my streak and I finished the OneNY 1000 km challenge, so I accomplished what I set out to do.
Thanks @shanaber for setting up the September (gasp) thread. I'll update the final time and check in with you all here tomorrow and think about my goals for September. It's going to be much the same story I think.

Congratulations folks on all the work you have completed on your racing/running/life goals. Life seems harder these days so, dang, just having a goal is a thing. Here's my report for August:Greetings! Mostly a lurker, I participated more in these challenges last fall as I was finishing C25K. Then I took a 4 week break in the winter and when I got back to running I was trying to minimize my social media time...
Anyway, after my first 10K in March, things pretty much shut down race-wise b/c of covid, and in April I took another month off. That proved to be beneficial since in that time my plantar fasciitis disappeared. And here I am back running again!

August race completed: https://www.huaracheturbo.com/event_loteria_run.php in a little over 30 minutes. Not my best 5K time. I'm finding it hard to get psyched up for virtual racing.
Also, I joined Strava. Now you know I have a running problem. :-)

I haven't been active here in a while. Still running but the thread just got to be too much for me to keep up with. I pop in from time to time to see how people are doing.
I just heard about @PastorVincent passing from a Strava post. He was so friendly and quick with a joke about whatever the topic of the day was. I always appreciated his commitment to the group and how he went out of his way to make sure new members felt welcome. Such a loss to the community here. Even though I've never met any of you IRL, I still feel like I know many of you and I definitely felt that way about him.
I hope everyone else is doing ok. Hugs to those who aren't.9 -
So saw the physio today. We both agree it's going to be about 4 weeks till 8 can start some short jogs.
I'm starting walking for exercise as of this week, and I've got some strength training as well. All to start building strength towards getting back to running. So the ortho surgeon was right, 3 months.
I checked, my last run was 13th July, with the incident that caused the tear on 23rd July. So will be nearly 3 months when I run again.
And running again will be warm up, run 1 min. Walk 5. Repeat 3 times. I'll be keeping it super light and stop at any moment I feel a niggle.
I can't wait. Those minutes will be awesome

@Avidkeo hang in there, you're getting closer. After my injury I started from scratch with C25k.
The run I'm about to go out for will put me at just over 117km for the month. I can't remember what I set as my goal, and tbh I don't really care right now. It might have been 115. I'll look at the plan for September over breakfast later.6
