Hi runners:
I have been absent since I am not running enough to really post much here. But I still check in and I just want to express my deepest sorrow and condolences for @pastorvincent. I really appreciated his dry sense of humor and his running advice. He will be missed. 🙏🙏🙏

@Camaramandy648 Beautiful sunset and rainbow. I like the songs too.
Love the picture and sentiment @RunsOnEspresso .1 -

This morning I got my tire replaced - fortunately it was a brand new tire so replacement was covered and I just had to pay for the service. Turns out I ran over a screw. But that meant I didn't get a run in and didn't get to work as early as I hoped. I brought my running stuff to work but at 5 I just wanted to go home and I really needed to walk poor Stella who didn't get a walk yesterday. It was a beautiful evening so we headed out to the trails and I decided to try to run with her a bit. It was super slow with lots of stops and starts, but it was a much needed head-clearing time.
I took these pics during the run because I like the light and thought it was so peaceful up there on the trails. Unlike our friend Vincent, I'm no photographer though so they don't quite capture it but it made me think of him again13 -
Oh, also I got my OneNY 1000Km challenge swag in the mail today The medal is huge and I love the long-sleeve hoodie. It is actually soft and fits really well. There was a buff also but the fabric seems too "slick" and I'm not a fan. Thumbs up on the rest though.
They are doing a fall challenge too but I'm not planning to participate because I don't want to stress about it. I'm having a hard enough time just keeping up my run streak as it is.

Just a thought that Boston Marathon is being run virtually this year, and (real) registrants can run it anytime between 9/7 and 9/14. I will try to run a "Boston Marathon" that week for @PastorVincent.

Upcoming and current races:
D-Backs Virtual Run Against Cancer on 10/17 (which would have been my son's 43rd birthday....)

I did my first intentional running in months, today. Between heat, and trying to get prepared to hiking with a pack for a father daughter adventure/death march my father requested, the only running I had done was when lightening/baseballs of death (hail) were racing me home.
I am mostly sharing about my wog because like others, I saw things on my route that inspired pictures, and thoughts. And one picture hopefully brings some laughter. And because recent events brought me out of my hole, and back to the group, to share hugs, even if I didn’t run.
This is “Sundance Mountain.” The indigenous did a Sundance at the base of it, so the mountain was named after the dance, the town was named after the mountain, and the kid (Sundance Kid) was named after the town, where he was an involuntary guest. Not the Sundance of the film festival.
This was taken right next door to my house as I started my wog. And Although it doesn’t look quite as bad as I feared, it is totally an #awkwardnaturepicture .... I totally caught/imposed upon one of these poor deer trying to relieve themselves.
1.8/ why on earth am I starting over again.11 -

@katharmonic Nice pictures and a nice place for a walk/run. Stella looks like she is enjoying it too. Nice swag.
@hanlonsk Love the picture of Sundance Mountain. Nice that you saw the deer. Funny that you interrupted "nature."

Morning!
Love the photos @katharmonic - the swag is awesome! Are you in NY?
@hanlonsk absolutely love.
Just checking in this morning. I have my ultra today. Vincent’s visitation / funeral is virtual and the link is in a previous post - at 11am eastern time, USA.
Also wanted to let you know that I did hear back from Kristi, @pastorvincent’s wife. Here is what she said.
Wow, Mandy, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your kind words and care. I am still operating in a state of shock and running on adrenaline. God has been so faithful and the outpouring of love and offers for support we have been receiving is overwhelming in the best way possible. I so grateful. I am so very blessed to have known Vincent and have been his wife. I’m a better person for it. I’m so very sorry. I know a lot of people besides me are feeling a Vincent-sized hole. May God comfort you as He has been comforting us. Much love.
And here is my response:
Good morning, Kristi!
I understand grief. I have not lost a husband (except by a lot of bad choices on both parts as well as divorce), but I have lost others, my parents included. My heart breaks for you and your son. Truly. I have been praying for both of you so much. I believe God will keep you, be gracious to you, shine on you with favor, and you will know peace. The grief is part of the process - or so has been my experience. I won’t pretend to know how you are feeling. I won’t pretend that I am just so wise.
But it is important to me that you know that there is an army behind you, praying for you. Thinking of you. Wishing we could hold and hug you and your son. You are not alone.
Yes - the vincent sizes hole. Man. I am running an ultra today and dedicating it to him. And to honor you. Vincent’s investment in me goes beyond banter on Facebook. He was so wise. He was funny. He made me laugh. He talked to me about eating and training well and he believed in me so much that I even started to REALLY believe in and love myself. There will never be another like him. When i am out running, I still think of all the things I want to tell him and pictures to show him. I used to think, “I wish I had a dad like that,” or “I really need to go to Pittsburg to make dinner for Vincent and his family.” He meant so, so, so much to me. Mentorship is the only word that seems to fit, aside from friend.
Today is going to be busy for you. I remember making all of the arrangements and being the backbone when my mother died. I remember putting on a face for the event and having to show up and be present when I really, really wanted to be alone and crawl in a hole and let the world stop around me. Those feelings are normal.
I hope that through your church family, you will have wise people to lean on and people that will let you just be.
I will be present today virtually, and as I said - should you ever, ever have a need or a want - please do let me know. So many of us share my sentiment, from all over the world.
So, so, so much love,
Mandy
The ultra today will not be the same and I don’t really want to do it. But then I remind myself how much I love running. And Vincent would NOT want me to quit before I even start. So I’ll attend his service and then go run I guess. 54k doesn’t seem to be enough for someone like vincent but i also am not trying to die while I’m out there. The ultra in September is 46, so I’ll dedicate 45 to vincent and 1 to as a birthday gift.
*sigh*8 -

Thanks so much for sharing that with us.
I will be pulling for you during your ultra today!
I was looking at the Facebook page of Vincent’s church and watched the last zoom sermon he gave. Towards the end he said that he hoped that when he got to heaven we would all have a good laugh together at all the mistakes we made when we were alive. And I thought what a fitting thought to leave for us now! Be kind to yourself, kind to others, don’t forget to laugh, and may the peace that passes understanding be with us all.8 -

@Tramboman that is a great idea! I make a playlist for every run and my playlist today is very depressing and I honestly don’t think I can stand to run like that for long, lol. I’ll get to work on that stat!1
-
Thanks for sharing @Camaramandy648 . I hope knowing that so many people cared will help his family in some small way. Good luck with your ultra today - and, yes, I think you should make a peppier playlist for the run.
Also, I'm all for a challenge for the week of the Boston Marathon. I was thinking just trying to run 26.2 miles during the week - not all at once, for sure. I'm not ready for that.3 -
Thanks for sharing Kristi's reply @Camaramandy648 And you should definitely play some upbeat music for your ultra. I like @Tramboman idea of running to celebrate his living not his passing. Today is a rest day for me, but I plan to run for him tomorrow.
I also love @HonuNui idea of the Boston Marathon week challenge. And I think running 26.2 miles that week is a great idea @quilteryoyo for thise of us who aren't marathon marathon runners. I've run a few Halfs, but I am not a Marathon runner and if I tried to run one a little over a week from now I would only injure myself and that would not be a good way to honor his memory. But I could do 26.2 in a week.4 -
@Camaramandy648 thanks for sharing your post and Kristi's reply. They were both touching and heartbreaking.
Good luck today on your Ultra! I know Vincent will be running beside you the whole way.
Very good idea about running a marathon during Boston Marathon week. I'm in for that for sure!1 -
I’m in for the marathon week in Pastor Vincent’s honour. Am also resting today but tomorrow’s long run will be with him in mind.
Thanks for sharing his wife’s message @Camaramandy648.
Hang in there everyone, keep running x2 -

I'm in for 26.2 miles from 9-7 to 9-14.
I had no idea @PastorVincent was an introvert. He's the most extroverted introvert I've ever known.3 -
I did watch @PastorVincent s funeral. All of the stories were really sweet. One line that stuck with me was that his sermons were always about loving God and loving people, and if we would do that, it would make Vincent happy. So, I'm thinking in addition to a Boston Marathon running during the week of Sept 7 - 14, that maybe we all do a random act of kindness in his name too - and share with us what it was, if you want.8

Great words to live by from @PastorVincent. Thought of him a lot during my 6 mile run this morning.
First real time running on the treadmill. Wasn't completely terrible, but it wasn't much better than running outside. We keep the house at 78°F in the summer, and with the ceiling fan it was basically just as hot as running outside at 5am. But it will be good when (if) winter comes. Then the house will be about 68-70°F, and no 20mph wind 😁

Race report - sort of: I completed a virtual 5k this morning. I wasn't looking forward to it for many reasons - the forecast was for rain and thunderstorms all morning, I was exhausted from the week, and I just don't like virtual races. I also haven't run a 5k or any race since January or even pushed my pace for a sustained amount of time for quite a long time. And I generally don't like 5ks in the best of times. I knew if I ran with my usual group of friends doing the Saturday long run that I would not push myself and I also really wanted to be able to sleep in. So I turned down the offers to meet up and spent some leisurely time having coffee and making eggs before taking Stella out for a walk as a warm up. Then I realized I was actually pushing it for time because I had to be at strength training by 10:30. So I drove to the canal which is close to the gym and flat to do my "race". I still wasn't sure what I had in me or if I was even going to try to race it, but I took a deep breath and decided to see how it felt.
The first mile seemed long and I was purposely not looking at my watch because I didn't want to give up or get stressed out by the numbers. I was wearing my tank that says "I AM TRAINING FOR A SPARTAN RACE" in big military style font and clearly working hard so I got a few encouraging waves and a "you've got this", which was lovely. This section of the canal between road crossings is almost exactly 1.5 miles, so I approached the turn-around and circled the parking lot there to add a bit so I wouldn't be short at the end and then headed back. I had looked at my watch now a couple of times so I knew my pace was under a 10 minute mile. I really felt unsure I could sustain it. I saw a friend of mine who was walking on the canal and she called my name and I shouted hi and that I was running a 5k can't stop! That kind of propelled me because I couldn't let her see me slack off after that. I kept repeating to myself "this is temporary" just 3 songs left, less than 10 minutes left, you can stop in 5 minutes, etc. Finally my watch beeped that I passed 3 miles and I just had to hang on for the .1. I was almost to the end of the trail so I had adequately looped so I could just run it out and be done. I stopped my watch right at 3.10 miles and 29:09 seconds and nearly collapsed with relief.
Oddly enough this was the exact time that I had for the last 5k I did on January 12! I feel really good about that, although the January race was hilly and in winter, it was pretty humid today which made it hard. I hustled over to strength training and somehow got through that. I was definitely warmed up! Now I am going to take a nice nap and then I have work to catch up on.
Overall, very pleased with how it went. I dedicate this 5k to PastorVincent, who would have told me I could do it, and would have been among the first to congratulate, as he always was for everyone. I can't believe we won't be hearing a race report from him again either, as he always had amazing efforts and impressive speed. Run on, Vincent!13 -

Ran 5k and took a long walk in celebration of @PastorVincent today.
Memphis had the dregs of Laura come through yesterday, crazy winds and a lot of rain. Today it was just overcast and very humid, but surprisingly hot. I thought of @PastorVincent introducing me to the notion of dewpoint and its effect on runners. Our dewpoint today was 80, which I think the chart says is supposed to have a great impact on running pace. But my pace was actually much better than it has been for a while now. I’m at that point in my recovery where I have to make sure I don’t do anything stupid and mess everything up, since I feel so much better than I have that it’s easy to forget I’m still not really healed. Did two miles at sub 10 minute mile pace. Husband was getting wheezy - the air smelled very unfamiliar, probably stuff dragged up from the South by Laura - so we took a walk break, and even with a break 3rd mile under 11 minutes. Just a good feeling run for me.
Afterwards we walked through Farm park, fed the chickens, walked down to the railroad museum, and over to the horseshow grounds. I made an effort to look for things of beauty, things to rejoice in and be thankful for and share with the group. We noticed an ancient rusted out shovel leaning against a tree. Some cool bark. A really good tree. And a little downy gray-and-rust colored feather fell from the sky and settled in the palm of my husband’s hand.11
