September 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

Hey all! Jumping in here! I just started running consistently again after a 3.5 year (2 babies) break and am excited to join the challenge!
My goal for September is 30 miles. For me, just starting up, it will be tough, but I'm feeling motivated and excited! I am using C25k on M/W/F during lunch breaks at work, and will be doing a few other misc. runs in the evenings occasionally.9 -
@Camaramandy648 I thought I remembered some discussion about what you ate but couldn't remember if it was preferences or health issues. I think I will always have to count calories. As long as I do I can pretty much eat what I want. (I do like a lot of things so I eat lots of fruits, veggies and lean proteins. Not just candy. 🤣) . I just know that in the past when I wasn't very active I got real heavy. Then I came on here, lost 60 pounds and called maintenance but with all the running I kept losing weight and ended up settling at maintenance after losing a total of ~80 pounds. Now I mostly count to make sure I eat enough calories. But I have never been able to trust my hunger cues. I never needed to be hungry to eat, and sometimes now I still need to eat even when I'm not really hungry. So for me counting the calories helps me to know if I am eating enough, but not too much. I don't think I would ever be able to eat intuitively even though I know some people can. But if you are starving to death then you probably need to listen to that cue and eat more. Especially since you keep running all these back to back marathons and ultras. 😊4

9/1 – 6 with Champ
6 of 115 miles
@RunsOnEspresso I talked to Skip today we are going to see if we can defer until next year. I don’t want to hang around and I’m not sure I want her to drive 6 hours home to run it anyway, it’s too hard to find places to stop and eat and use the restroom etc. – lots of great virtual runs you have there.
@WandaVaughn Glad to help you out with that number. Happy Anniversary.
Welcome @_runnerbean_
@ContraryMaryMary we all definitely have those runs, hang in there
@brittanystebbins95 what a sweetie, congrats!!! 29 hours!! Yikes and I thought the flight to Russia to get Skip was long ;-)
@Teresa502 I noticed the last couple of days it’s still sorta dark at 6:00 am. I hate my headlamp of course if I had it a few years back I wouldn’t have tripped on a speed bump and broke my ribs ha ha Skip wear her headlamp around her waist and it doesn’t bounce, she hates it on her head. A hat with lights, way cool. I’ve seen the type you’re talking about too @Scott6255

Cut my speedwork short today because it's too stinking easy to do so on the treadmill, and I seriously just wasn't feeling good. After yesterday's run, I had planned to do something easier anyway, so I am ok with this decision. I felt like I was just unnecessarily beating myself up, instead of making progress.
Then I took the younger kid to 1st day of school meeting...Parents are not allowed in the building. Teachers came out for their class and then brought the kids back out. They staggered the meetings and split them between 3 separate entrances, but still couldn't avoid crowds forming outside the entrances. The meeting was 30 minutes long, and it was raining, so about 4 classes' worth of parents were waiting, crowded underneath the covered entrance. Then the police showed up, and suddenly everyone was digging in their pockets for their masks. Haha. Masks aren't required outside UNLESS you can't maintain 1 meter distancing. So technically yes, required in this case. But the police appeared to be delivering something, and had no interest in us or our masks.4 -

Yas! All of this!
When I started here, just over a year ago now, I wanted to lose a gazillion pounds.
Well, add a million miles of running, a total change in diet, and lifting - I've lost more than I wanted to, and I'm totally good with that! Now, I just want to make sure I'm eating enough and of the right stuff so I can maximize recovery and not die.
Still working on some portions of body composition, but the thing is - once you're already doing as much as you possibly can, you tend to not worry so much about aesthetics. That just comes with the territory. I wasn't lifting as much before the running but then had the horrible IT Band issues which made lifting necessary. I've found all the things fit together.
And yep - the diet change is truly just because health reasons. I don't want to continually have to have surgeries if I can avoid it with diet and exercise!4 -

@polskagirl01 It sounds like you made the right decision!
School has been interesting for my kids too.... It's such a strange world, now. We aren't allowed in the building AT ALL. So last week, when my daughter forgot her ID badge (required in high school here), I had to drive home, get it, and wait outside, mask on, for her to saunter out to get it. It was like 100 degrees F that day and I was so frustrated with her! Teenagers! Good grief! Ah well, at least she seems to have found a niche and she is loving high school.
My son finally got a boy teacher and he is having a great time too. he is in sixth grade and having girl troubles. I didn't particularly like the girl and this morning he told me he thinks she is a waste of his time and I said "GOOD FOR YOU! you should ONLY SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO PROPEL YOU FORWARD AND DON'T PLAY MIND GAMES!" I know. I'm crazy about my kids.... but seriously, good for him.
As for the C word affecting school.... I think we all know it's coming.5 -
Thanks for all the support and positive messages everyone - it means a lot to have people who understand.
My coach texted me after seeing my Strava whine with the simple message, ‘take tomorrow off’.
He then posted a Facebook video addressing the issue as I’m not the only one if his athletes in a ‘hole’ at the minute. A bunch of us are training hard for a flat and fast half marathon on the 20th and are pushing our limits at the moment and a few of us have found ourselves “deep in a training hole”.
For those who are curious, my coach uses the supercompensation method to set our programmes. Super compensation is a four-step process. The first step is to increase training load - the body's subsequent reaction is fatigue.
Step 2 is the recovery phase. This can be a lighter training session, a recovery session, or active rest. As a result of the recovery period, the energy stores and performance will return to the baseline.
Step 3 is the supercompensation phase. This is the adaptive rebound above the baseline. This supercompensation effect is not only a physiological response but also a psychological and technical response.
The last step in the process is the loss of the supercompensation effect. This decline is a natural result of the application of a new training stress, which should occur at the peak of supercompensation.
My coach used the analogy of bouncing a ball - the harder you push it down, the higher it bounces back. If you don’t push hard enough (not enough training or too much recovery time) you bounce back at a lower level (lose fitness). However, too much pushing down (overreaching) and you don’t have enough time to bounce all the way back up (not enough recovery) - and that’s where I was yesterday.
Read more here (written for cyclists but the same science applies): https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/science-of-supercompensation/
TL:DR. Coach has given me tomorrow off and an easy run for Thursday. Yay.9 -
Welcome to all the newbies! Welcome back to all that have taken a break but have now come back to join us again!
@brittanystebbins95 - Love Finnegan and his name! I can relate to the long labor and delivery, my daughter was 9lbs 2oz and my doctor came into recovery and apologized afterwards. No one was expecting her to be that big 😁
Running lights @Teresa502 - I got lights from Noxgear for my daughter and her pup and she loved them. I don't typically run in the dark but where she is in the PNW it gets dark earlier and stays dark longer then in So Cal. They also have pretty great sales too. If I see a discount code I will post it.
@Camaramandy648 - great job on the super long runs! Like @kgirlhart mentioned just be sure to eat enough. Eating to little and the impact on your body can be real sneaky. I had major issues with it a few years ago and almost ended up in the hospital (adrenal fatigue).
@ContraryMaryMary - glad your coach is giving you a rest day. I am sure you will bounce right back and be off and running fast again!
@Tramboman - I saw apple cider donuts at Trader Joe's yesterday and had to try them. Haven't had them since my daughter was living in Maryland and we could buy them freshly made and warm. So good when it was cold outside! Well it isn't cold and they weren't still warm but they were pretty darn delicious.
No run for me today as it is a cross training day but I got a HIIT workout in and a good stretching class. I am always tired on Tuesdays after running and agility class on Monday.5 -
@Camaramandy648 Thanks for letting us know that you have been in contact with Kristi. I am hopeful knowing how much he was cared for by so many is a small comfort to them. Great job on being in the top 10!!! You rock.
Welcome @annshandle and @kristinajeang !
@kgirlhart Way to hang in there and get your run done in those conditions!
@ContraryMaryMary Glad you aren't the only one in the same boat and that your coach is giving you a rest day and an easy run to follow. I'm sure you'll be back to your amazing self soon! That supercompensation makes sense, but sounds brutal.3 -
So, no running yet. Had grand plans, but did a pretty good job of slicing a finger at work.... like probably should have gotten it looked at ... but did everything I could to avoid the paperwork sort of good. So, self care today was to not run, and try to keep bits from bleeding more. Ugh.
However, popping in on the light convo for @teresa502 .... I had a light similar to the one @Scott6255 linked, like it might even be energizer, but it’s a bit different, and it was bright enough I could kinda see my feet, but that was about all. Not even entirely convinced other people could see me. And as evidenced by why I didn’t run today, a klutz like me needs as much help as I can get.... so, after discovering our current lights were insufficient, my bestie found us these:
And I love it, it takes triple A batteries, so easy to replace, it lights up enough that you can actually see where you are about to put your feet, and others can see you, and it doesn’t seem to blind folks. Is shaped just right to clip to the bottom of your ball cap brim. I was a bit concerned at first it would be too heavy, but I don’t even have hair long enough for a ponytail right now, and it doesn’t pull the cap at all.
I even brought it backpacking last month and it was perfect for that.
Unfortunately, it has no identifying marks... which is why I included the picture.5 -

Morning everybody. Legwork last night and then an easy run this morning along the river. My brain didn't like me very much yesterday but seems much improved after exercise. Sneaky little organ.
It was only 22 degrees C (70-ish F) when I headed out. I think autumn is finally upon us.
@annshandle @kristinajeang Welcome!Camaramandy648 wrote: »once you're already doing as much as you possibly can, you tend to not worry so much about aesthetics.
Have to agree wholeheartedly with this. Oh and good luck with the super long runs! 72km boggles my brain. You've got this!
@ContraryMaryMary Interesting article. I'm heard about supercompensation before - it's actually how most athletes get better at their sport - but have never learned how to use it in my own training.
@hanlonsk That sounds nasty. Take care.6 -

Morning!
@ContraryMaryMary that is so interesting. I think it's how I've been training. Not really intuitively, but just from devouring everything I can about proper recovery and returning to really long distances. I used to read about how to run better. Now, i read about how to recover better. There is a lot of writing about running back to back ultras and marathons and how that can be really, really bad for you. The ONLY way to make sure it doesn't ruin you is to recover well (or at least, this has been my experience). On the flip side, there are loads of professional runners (Devon Yanko, for example) that run a marathon every day. So. I guess it depends on the endurance and recovery and nutrition of each individual. Anyway, really enjoyed that article. Thank you for posting.
@noblesheep I did a full body HIIT last night. Very sore today. And thank you! I guess I am too stupid to quit lol.
@hanlonsk I hope your finger heals well!
@shanaber YES. My goal is to stay alive and healthy. As I was reading your words, I was eating a vegan english muffin smothered in crunchy peanut butter. Recovering well is key.
@Quilteryoyo you are so welcome! Also! THERE IS A SLIDE SHOW OF PHOTOS OF @PastorVincent on fb! I hope someone can figure out how to post the link here. It's beautiful and will have you bawling. He lived such a full life. You can see in the photos how deeply loved and adored he was by his wife and family and every person he impacted. I was thinking about grief last night and "what to do now." Fuel. It has always boiled down to - do you let the pivotal, trajectory-changing moments in your life make or break you? USE IT AS FUEL.
I ordered a pull up bar. Should be here Friday. The kind I have is one that you'll fly right off of if you aren't perfectly still. Well.... I'm a pretty wiggly person so it just doesn't work for me. I hope the new one will help with core and stability. Upper body is fine too.
In non-running news - I AM WORKING ON GETTING DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR MYSELF AND MY KIDS! I am half Portuguese and my sister just went through the whole process, so she can guide me through it! This will open up A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES for the kids! I am so excited! - When I say, "I am working on it," what I really mean is, "I have the application."
That's a start, right?

Looking forward to hitting triple digits! Also, wore a new shirt this morning. It was made of super thin material, light as a feather. BUT once wet, it stuck to me like a second skin. Felt gross. I won't wear that one on a sweaty run again. Live and learn.3 -

Today was the first time in a long time that I cut a run short because of the heat, I’m so tired of it being a million degrees at 6:00 am. I might go out again tonight.
@ContraryMaryMary thanks for posting what your coach said, that is very interesting.
@Teresa502 and @shanaber I think Noxgear is having a sale too
@hanlonsk ouch sorry about the finger – oh I like that light
@Teresa502 it’s really been brutal out, I stopped to clean up after Champ and the sweat was pouring off my face/head like someone was spraying me with a hose. Nice cheerleaders
@Camaramandy648 my daughter has dual citizenship, she’s a citizen of Russia and the US. It’s pretty cool.

September Goal: 100 Miles
9/1: 6.22 miles
9/2: 5.05 miles
11.27/100 miles completed for September
956.50/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
Today's run was so much better than yesterday's run. Yesterday it was 84°F feels like 92°F when I got up at 5:00 am. Today it was only 72°F, but it was raining and thundering and lightening when I got up at 5:00. I thought I might not get to run, but when I looked at the radar it looked like the storm would be past by 7:00. So instead of running and then doing a 20-30 minute yoga to stretch, I decided to do some yoga and then if it wasn't lightening at 7:00 I could run then. So I drank my coffee and got dressed and did about 50 minutes of yoga. I tried to pick a dynamic flow since I was doing it first and I wanted more movement and less stretching. It seemed to be a good choice. There wasn't any lightening nearby at 7:00 and it was raining, but a gentle rain so I went on out. I figured I had about 45-50 minutes. I usually run for about 1 hr to 1:10, but I thought a short run would be better than no run and there are more storms predicted for later today. It was about 72° and it was pretty humid, but since it was raining it didn't feel too bad. I started out and realized that I was running pretty fast for me. Yesterday I ran a 10K in 1:11. My average pace was 11:25. Today I ran 5 miles in 48:37 with an average pace of 9:38. So the difference in feels like 92° and feels like 72° was really noticeable. Yesterday I was just glad to get my run done. Today I really enjoyed the run. I'm so glad I got a run in between the storms. If I hadn't I would have been in a bad mood all day. I'm not usually a fan of rainy weather, but we really need rain. And since I ran this morning I'm enjoying the rain instead of griping about it. We actually have gotten 2.75 inches so far since yesterday afternoon. I think tomorrow morning will be similar to this morning. I hope that I will be able to have a window to run, but if I don't I will try not to let it make me cranky.
So all in all it was a good morning. I had a great run with a fast (for me) pace. I actually got the first 5K in less than 30 minutes which usually only happens in races for me. And I got into headstand this morning in yoga. Not for very long, but I got both feet up. 😁
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon7 -
Following the noxgear conversation with interest @Teresa502 and @shanaber - yesterday was my first run starting in the dark since around April, and i found it a little scary. I know I’ll get used to it soon but the first ones of the season are always an adjustment. I would really help myself by having a light and maybe some form of self defence, rather than just trying to stay close to streetlights and hoping for the best!!
After my practice yesterday, today I did my first running commute from child drop-off to work. It’s not very far and mostly downhill so pretty fast. I’m driving in tomorrow and plan to bring a selection of clothes, shoes and food/snacks so I don’t have to bring anything with me on running mornings.
@Camaramandy648 - you are just amazing! @kgirlhart - glad you got the run, dodged the storm and smashed the time!
@hanlonsk - hope the injury has healed.
@Tramboman - good retro song to have as the soundtrack to your run!

9/2 - 2.25mi!
Pushed it an extra .25mi today just to get closer and closer to my first 5k since starting back up. It's amazing how great my legs feel after getting back into regular running! Quick question for all you seasoned runners: since I'm just getting back into it after a few years hiatus (I had an occasional run here and there over the past 3 years but nothing regular), how many rest days do you think I should take a week? Right now I'm definitely doing MWF runs, but I may want to do a run tomorrow night too. I just dont want to work too hard or injure myself if that is a possibility from not allowing my body enough recovery time?
2.25/30mi for September4 -
@Teresa502 Love the cheerleaders. Good for you for doing 5 miles in those conditions!
@kgirlhart Yeah for the nice run today. Great pace! Hopefully, tomorrow will be just as good for you.
@kristinajeang You are doing great. As for rest days, I'm not sure I'm the best person to answer that question. I consider myself sort of new at running too. I would take at least one total rest day and maybe do some cross training one or two days. Are you following a plan of some sort? Most of those will have rest days planned in. Also, be sure to take a cut back week every 3 or 4 weeks. Lowering the mileage ran a little will give your muscles time to heal and you'll be able to do more the next week. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, for what it is worth. Others on here can probably give you better advice.
I played doubles tennis this morning for cross training. I thought about coming home and doing a short run too, but it was hot and humid. Tennis was enough for the day.6 -
@kristinajeang if you google you will probably see 3 or 4 times a week alternating days - 20 to 30 minutes each run. Listen to your body and don't add miles too quickly to avoid injury.7
-
9/1 – 7.01 miles
9/2 – 5.03 miles
Goal – 130 miles
It was so oppressive out this morning. I was sweating before I got to the end of my driveway. Enough said.@shanaber – thanks for the Noxgear recommendation. I will check them out. For some reason, I always thought they were more for being visible rather than providing light to see.
My cheerleaders.
Ouch @hanlonsk – I hope your finger heals quickly. Thanks for your light recommendation. If I see one like it I will check it out.
I also have a noxgear and love it. I hated the idea of a bouncing headlamp, though won one in a recent competition - haven't been able to try it yet (4 weeks!!)3 -
Sept total: 3.5/60 miles
9/2: 3.5 miles
I'm not really training for anything specific right now. Usually my fall would have a few races but virtual races just don't really do it for me and even if I could find an in-person one, I wouldn't feel safe doing it. The next potential race on my calendar is the Houston HM in January, which I signed up for a year in advance. I guess we will see how Houston and racing in general is doing with coronavirus in January.
Without something to train for, I was struggling to find motivation. Especially when combined with running outside in Houston in the summer. So, I started a new training program through Runcoach. So far, I like it. Novelty goes a long way with me and just having a plan is usually enough to make me stick to it.
My main accomplishment this summer has been actually continuing to run outside and embracing running in just a sports bra! I overheat so easily and in the summer I have historically done longer runs on the treadmill in the AC, but that wasn't an option this year. So, I pep talked myself into ditching my shirt and it made a HUGE difference in my comfort level. I will never go so far as to say I am comfortable without my shirt or with the temperature, but sprinklers and a slight breeze on bare skin is almost as good as a blast of AC!9 -
So many posts, and so behind.
Did want to do say @brittanystebbins95 Congrats!! Finnegan is beautiful!
@kgirlhart Your weight loss is impressive! I can't even picture you any other way. And today's run was fab!
Hugs and high fives to everyone here and to the newcomers, welcome.
7 ish miles today on the treadmill because 100% Humidity with dew point in the 70's.
6 -
@martaindale I still have not made it to comfort without a shirt! I have adorable, supportive sports bras that I got with the intention of wearing them without a shirt and then I get ready to go and I'm like, "Nope! Nobody needs to see my goods!" It would be so much more comfortable, though!
Maybe this weekend i'll be brave like you.
@avidkeo, I remember when you got your vest! I still haven't bought one - or a lamp - and I need to.
@Faebert I am truly considering running with a gun. There are holsters made for this. On my long run last weekend, I came across a transient that was very clearly tweaked out of his mind. Took his picture and sent it along with my location to my two closest friends. Thought nothing of it after that - I ended up getting two photos.
But then, on the trail, I was running south and he was hiking up the side of the bluff, heading east. If we met, it'd have been a 90 degree angle. Ran my fastest mile and realized mace is not sufficient in battle. I need to be prepared to be on the winning side of things. I haven't made the jump yet because I'm still very seriously concerned about my daughter around guns. I'd have to strategize how to keep her safe. She is NOT of the maturity level to respect guns. I've found this out in the two instances this summer that i exposed her to them. A gun in the house around her is a horrible, horrible idea. To her, they are a joke. Seriously. She doesn't get it. Gun safety and the fact that they can take a person's life do not compute for her.... I digress. Autism is great....
Anyway, @Faebert yes. You should do more than hope for the best if you are able. And thank you! I Think you are so amazing, as well!
@Teresa502 YOU'RE KILLING IT!
@skippygirlsmom My sister said that if I become a dual citizen, then my kids can too, which would open up so many opportunities for them in terms of education, job prospects, travel, healthcare, etc. I could literally give them the world? What a gift!5 -
Thanks @hamsterwheel6 !
@teresa502 I have a noxgear vest and I love it. I do think that they are designed more to help you be seen than to help you see. I usually stick to well lit areas when I run in the dark. But it does help me see where I am going and I feel much safer wearing it. I think that a clip light like @Scott6255 or @hanlonsk has would pair well with the noxgear.
@kristinajeang I don't know if I'm a seasoned runner. I've only been running for 4 years. I definitely think that rest days are important. When I started running I used a C25K app (which was 3 days per week) and after I finished it I probably ran for another 6 months and then I added in a 4th day of running. I could probably run 5 days a week now, but 4 fits my schedule better. I would say just don't try to rush it, but if you feel comfortable adding an extra day then it would be fine. Just remember that you do need to give your body time for recovery. But a rest day doesn't have to mean you do nothing. You can still walk or bike or like @quilteryoyo play tennis.
@martaindale I sometimes wish I had the courage to run in my bra. The Texas heat is so awful sometimes (and Houston is more humid than where I am.) But I live in a very small town, and the last thing I need is to have people coming up to me in Walmart or the bank saying "I can't believe I saw you running in your underwear." Even if I felt comfortable doing it, I could never do it here.5
