I've only run one time in sports bra only. It was the Sports Bra Squad day and I was with three or four other friends. And it was really early on a Sunday morning when few people were out! If this link works, it tells you about the day and gives some inspiring stories: https://womensrunning.com/culture/sportsbrasquad-day/
As far as the safety conversation, some mornings when I'm by myself I run with my pepper spray blaster. I'm so clumsy that I would probably accidentally shoot myself with a gun.4 -

I started following Kelly Roberts on IG not too long ago (the author of the article linked above)! I find her irreverent take on running reassuring and her come as you are mentality very helpful. In general, I think her approach to running/health/weight is just great! An often repeated phrase is "Health is not a look. It's a lifestyle." She was certainly one major reason I worked up the guts to ditch the shirt this summer. So, I know it's silly to care what some random person I don't even know thinks of how I look while I am running several miles in heat indexes over 100F, but those were exactly the thoughts that held me back. Never in my life have I exercised in just a sports bra before this summer. I'm turning 40 in a couple of days and I've always worried too much about what other people think of my body. It's been liberating, honestly. It actually does make me feel more powerful and more confident.
And not a single person has said anything to me or about me (at least within earshot!). If they thought it, they kept it to themselves and that's fine by me! I'll get off my soapbox now.
Anyway, for IG users, she is worth a follow and your area may have a BadAssLadyGang to follow as well. Some of the chapters are more active that others but it seems like they could be a good option for people who want to find a running buddy for safety reasons or just some company.4 -
@martaindale That's awesome! Thank you for the insight and suggestions! Agree 100%. health is about my LIFE, not what I look like...
@Teresa502 I share this concern as well. Last night, as I was falling asleep, I was imagining running with a gun and shooting myself in the stomach somehow on accident. Or the leg. Or the toe....
Anxiety is a real *kitten*.4 -
I never thought I'd like a bouncing head lamp but honestly I don't even notice it.4
-
Speaking of dual citizenship I have dual Canada/USA. Does give a bit more choices.
Sports bra...I have at the beach, and once here at home. And as @martaindale said I actually did feel more empowered!
Safety I only ever run on greenways and usually when people are out and about. But there is one trail that has bridges where transients live and that does scare me at times. I usually run as fast as I can at that spot. I too would be clumsy with a gun let alone use it.

Can someone interested in doing the challenge for @PastorVincent pm me so I can send you a link and see if I’ve got it set up right?0

I just checked my bookmarks to see when I started with this group. It was August of 2018, so have been here for a little over 2 years now. I was reading through some of the posts - @PastorVincent had some really cool things to say. He posted this in Sept 2018. He said to insert the word month in place of day and was encouraging those of us who were woefully short of their August goals. It's appropriate for everyone today too.
Then, I noticed it has been a long time since we have heard from @MegaMooseEsq and @7lenny7 . Has anyone heard from them?6 -
4.58 miles running plus about 4 walking. It was going to be 5 miles running, but going up the final hill I was feeling fine and then I suddenly wasn’t. Come to find out, looking at my data later, the heat index was 101 and the dewpoint 81. And my 11 mile easy pace had gradually crept up to a 10 mile not so easy pace. Anyway I felt like a puppet with my strings cut, so, what was gong to be my first 5 mile on roads since being injured ended up being a reminder that September in the Mid-South is still summer. Looking forward to weather that’s not so oppressive!
The good news is that my knee seems to be holding up!
On our walk back we pass by a school with a ball field which is closed due to Covid. It looked like there was a game today - the Crows were playing the Hawks! There were four enormous crows hopping around the infield and a lineup of hawks sitting in a row on the fence. It’s hard to get good bird photos using a phone but I managed to capture two hawks and a crow in a not very good photo:6 -
As suggested above... my little light DOES pair well with a noxgear vest. As you will hopefully be able to see in the spoiler, it does light up bright enough that if you had it on a steady color and not disco mode or whatever I had it on for demonstration, it would give some light to the world around you. But my light means I can see, and noxgear means others can see me.
Noxgear was ALSO a gift from the same bestie who gave me the light, (she is also to blame for me running at all, let alone running a half marathon) when I moved to this little town I’m in that has very few sidewalks and fewer street lights. I have worn just it, I have worn it with a waist belt water bottle, and I have worn it over the top of my wunjo packs. It is
In terms of how effective they are.... I believe what I told bestie after I tried it out the first time is, “it is awesome, if anyone hits me when I am wearing this, I will know that they MEANT to do it!”

Just popping in quick to update from tonight's run. Group speedwork - we warmed up and then did 1 minute intervals. 1 min hard, 1 min recovery between x 12. Then 4 sprints and cooldown.
Beautiful sunset when we were finished. Dark by the time I got home. The light conversation is not something I'm ready for but it's happening soon.
Will try to catch up with you all tomorrow!3 -

I follow @7lenny7 on Strava. He's still running and walking a lot, just clearly not MFPing at present. I have been wondering how @MegaMooseEsq is doing.3 -

@ContraryMaryMary that is so interesting. I think it's how I've been training. Not really intuitively, but just from devouring everything I can about proper recovery and returning to really long distances. I used to read about how to run better. Now, i read about how to recover better. There is a lot of writing about running back to back ultras and marathons and how that can be really, really bad for you. The ONLY way to make sure it doesn't ruin you is to recover well (or at least, this has been my experience). On the flip side, there are loads of professional runners (Devon Yanko, for example) that run a marathon every day. So. I guess it depends on the endurance and recovery and nutrition of each individual. Anyway, really enjoyed that article. Thank you for posting.
@noblesheep I did a full body HIIT last night. Very sore today. And thank you! I guess I am too stupid to quit lol.
@hanlonsk I hope your finger heals well!
@shanaber YES. My goal is to stay alive and healthy. As I was reading your words, I was eating a vegan english muffin smothered in crunchy peanut butter. Recovering well is key.
@Quilteryoyo you are so welcome! Also! THERE IS A SLIDE SHOW OF PHOTOS OF @PastorVincent on fb! I hope someone can figure out how to post the link here. It's beautiful and will have you bawling. He lived such a full life. You can see in the photos how deeply loved and adored he was by his wife and family and every person he impacted. I was thinking about grief last night and "what to do now." Fuel. It has always boiled down to - do you let the pivotal, trajectory-changing moments in your life make or break you? USE IT AS FUEL.
I ordered a pull up bar. Should be here Friday. The kind I have is one that you'll fly right off of if you aren't perfectly still. Well.... I'm a pretty wiggly person so it just doesn't work for me. I hope the new one will help with core and stability. Upper body is fine too.
In non-running news - I AM WORKING ON GETTING DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR MYSELF AND MY KIDS! I am half Portuguese and my sister just went through the whole process, so she can guide me through it! This will open up A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES for the kids! I am so excited! - When I say, "I am working on it," what I really mean is, "I have the application."
That's a start, right?
It would be interesting to see the stats for those that run marathons everyday. I would imagine they're all at different speeds and some of them are in the recovery zone, some aerobic and some at speed. With the supercompensation method, rest doesn't always mean no running, it could be a slow run - I was horrified to find my 30km runs were considered recovery as they were at a very slow, absorption pace, with my heart rate staying in Zone 1 - which for me is below 135bpm. So, conceivably, you can run everyday and still train and improve performance this way (I wouldn't recommend it though).
The other key point is to not compare yourself with a professional or elite athlete. They're exceptional people and work differently from us mere mortals. They have great physiology and technique and an absurdly high level of fitness, as well as intensive support from a range of professional trainers, physiotherapists, nutritionists, etc.
I simply focus on doing well for me - as long as I'm improving and getting the results from my efforts, I'm happy. One of my favourite sayings is, comparison is the thief of joy.8 -
I got in my first run of the month, a little over 5 miles, this morning. Despite being sore/tired from my HIIT workout on Tuesday the run today felt awesome. We also met a baby Vizsla (1yo) named Maizey who is visiting with her family from Portland. She and Hobbes a blast playing as much as they could with leashes on. I am pretty sure Hobbes is in love 😍
It is going to be triple digit, record breaking, heat starting Friday afternoon and through the weekend. Even though tomorrow should be a cross training day, I will run since it is coolish and I want to get it in. Hoping to try some speed work. I will also go out early on Friday for another short run and then take the weekend off. I don't usually run 3 days in a row but I will to get in what I can.10 -
I really thought I had posted all of this yesterday, but I don’t see it! Fortunately, I typed everything in notes and had it saved...
@brittanystebbins95 So adorable! Congratulations!!!!
@ContraryMaryMary Don’t be too hard on yourself. Hopefully, it was just an off day.
@rheddmobile, I think that sounds like a great idea!
@WandaVaughn Congratulations!
@_runnerbean_ Welcome!
@eleanorhawkins Sorry you’re so stressed. Like @Avidkeo said, I bet it is mostly water. Also, sometimes we all just need a good, cathartic scream.
@RunsOnEspresso You’re going to be busy!
Great job on your ultra @Camaramandy648
Welcome, @annshandle!
@hanlonsk Hope your finger is ok!
@kgirlhart Great job on hour run!
No run Monday. It felt like I had a pinched nerve yesterday. Pain going from my hip into my left leg. I think my chair at work is too old and not helping. Tylenol and a hot bath seemed to have helped some, as well as switching my desk chair out for a regular chair from the table in my office that has more support. I was able to walk 3.2 miles last night with no pain, so hopefully I can get in a short run tonight if it continues to feel ok. I am planning to run my virtual 10k Saturday, so I want to feel as well as possible for that.5 -
Thanks @quilteryoyo @skippygirlsmom and @kgirlhart ! I actually am working through C25k to start like you mention kgirlhart, so I was curious how much would be *too much* for starting back up. I'm thinking I'll just do a light 1mi run today and not push it, because I have the feeling of really wanting to run, but I definitely don't want to injure myself and have to start back all over again once it heals up. I think I'm also going to take weekends off completely, maybe just play with my son outside/go on a walk with the kids. Especially since I just started back at work after maternity leave, I am going to soak up the weekend time I get with them.
@martaindale normally I wouldn't like virtual races, because part of it for me is the camaraderie and atmosphere of a race, but they have a lot of really cool virtual races now because of covid! I signed up for a Dunder Mifflin runners and a Back to the Future run because those are two of my favorites (The Office and B2TF), and I am super excited for the shirts! lol

I'm behind on posts, busy week. I'm in a training hole as well, so decided to start an early taper for all these races I have coming up. Normally for a half marathon I'd just take a few days, but am trying to think of this as one big, month-long challenge instead of 3 separate races. I'm also gonna need more recovery than I expected from yesterday's dental work. Uggh.
Current status for the month.
That was just one bike ride, I've built up my bike fitness so it was honestly an easy day, promise!
My kid has very specifically requested his birthday cake look like a Delta 737 plane engine, and has provided drawings to illustrate how it should look. I don't know how this is going to go... 😆
Upcoming races:
Sept. 12 - Lubartów HM
Sept. 19 - Tomaszowski HM
Sept. 27 - Kraśnik HM
Oct. 25 - Lublin HM (no signups available yet)
Dec. 6??? - Puławy "Green Shoelaces" HM11 -
@polskagirl01 I'm counting on racing vicariously through you... everything here has been cancelled now
ETA no idea if that's the right word, but you know what I mean5 -
My half in door county was cancelled. i'm considering going up anyways and poking around. or i could save my money at fly somewhere next year. i'm missing the olympic peninsula6
-
@ContraryMaryMary my pastor says that all the time. Comparison is the thief of joy.
I love learning from and watching the elites though. They're amazing, amazing, amazing.
No run last night, which was good because Tuesday was supposed to be a rest day and I didn't use it as such. So Wednesday was rest day. And authentic Portuguese food day. And wine day. And dancing day. All after work, of course. It was a really fun night.
I am off tomorrow. Woo hoo! Plan to clean, maybe detail the car, go to the track, make a big breakfast for the kids, be home when they get home from school, ya know. Just enjoy life.
Signed up for the Chaski endurance race series. 5K and Marathon. They have a relay option if anyone is interested! I'd be down to do it with you!
So the Chaski will be my 4th marathon (technically fourth ultra if I do the 5K and the marathon in the same day, which I plan to).
Then, the Jangover challenge the last week (I think?) of September will be my 5th.
Honestly I don't know what I'm doing with my life, at this point. It seems like maybe I've lost my mind. I just keep doing these super crazy challenges and distances and thinking "I won't be able to keep going at this rate forever," which I am 100% sure is true, but here's the thing - I feel AMAZING. I'm not in pain. I'm not injured. I'm taking time off, eating, working on getting the sleep right (this always takes a few days after a long challenge).... I feel really, really good. This makes me believe....I can just keep going! I'm sure there's something I'm missing, right?
@7lenny7 is active on facebook as well. Just FYI.
Oh!!!!! Vincent's wife asked that I would post the gofundme site to this group as well. I already did that a few days ago and it's in the fb group too, but if you'd like me to post it here again just so it's easier to access, I will. Just let me know!
Question on the RTY: I've met my pledged distance and our team has met the 2020 - does this mean I can hang my medal now, or should I go for 2020 myself and THEN hang it?6 -
I still haven't gotten a run in yet. I've been super tired lately and last night I was laying on the bed and my ran in and jumped on the bed. As she did she hit my ankle. It's a little swollen and sore still this morning.4
-
I need to get a run in though this change to keto is zapping everything in me a the moment. Going to try to start with a 5k and see how it goes.3
-
@Camaramandy648 I missed the gofundme link. If you would share it again, that would be great.

Here you go @quilteryoyo
“Mandy Camara would you be able to please share the Go Fund Me for Vincent’s wife and son with the running group? And with anyone who may be able to help? It would be greatly appreciated 💕
https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-vincent-trigili “
@RunsOnEspresso im so sorry! I hope you heal soon!
@TheMrWobbly you can do it! Even if you walk! I know a lot of people doing keto and it does seem that the first week or so is very difficult. The good news is that this part is temporary!
2 -
Thanks @Camaramandy648 .
I slept longer than intended today and didn't get out for my run until 8:30. It was 75°F and 78% humidity. Surprisingly, it wasn't too bad. I guess 78% humidity vs 100% humidity makes a huge difference.
Today's run was a Short Interval Run - 10 minutes easy, 8 x (1 min hard/2 min recovery), 5 min easy. I went just a little longer in order to get to a good stopping point, mileage wise. I ran my hard segments between 9:20 and 11:18 min/mile. I think the 11:18 one I had to run up the hill I usually walk, so that was expected to be slower. Overall pace was 12:42 min/mile. For me, that's pretty good, especially since I walked more of the recovery time than normal. I ran 3.25 miles and walked 1.
Also 2/20 miles walked.

@Camaramandy648 other countries might be different but I haven’t seen any benefit for Skip having dual citizenship, short of not needing a visa to go home. Our course it’s Russia which might make a difference.
I think I’ve run in just a bra one time, and that was when I was at my tiniest. I always feel hotter with the sun beating on my skin.
I don’t run with any protection these days, even stopped carrying mace, which I only carried for the dogs in the hood anyway. I’ve talked to people who carry a gun, I have a carry permit so getting the right gun and holster would be no problem. Just never felt threaten enough where I thought I might need one. I worry about Skip at times, but she is very vocal when she thinks someone could be a threat. She lets them know hey mother f’er I see you there, not that if someone really wanted to hurt her that would work. I was way out on the trail one day by myself, and lost LOL, I was looking for the trail and I talking to myself and a voice said it’s to your right keep going. Dang I though God was talking to me, I turned and about 40 feet away was a guy sitting on a hammock, no joke in the middle of no where. I just went on my way, turns out he’s a naked runner on our mountain (or so I hear) he had no top on but didn’t stand up ha ha
@kgirlhart I have a knock off noxgear vest and I agree it helps people see me but doesn’t really help with seeing, personally when I’m running in the dark I tend to prefer for me to go black if I need to.
@rheddmobile those are some big birds, I run by one house that has big crows on their lawn all the time, but it’s only their lawn…things that make me go hhhmm
So yesterday I got a card in the mail that a sex offender moved within so my yards/feet wherever of my house. He’s on the next street basically behind the house across from me as the crow flies (speaking of crows). Well turns out Skip knows him, things that make me shake my head…oh yeah he was her Resource officer at school, well there’s putting the wolf in the hen house huh? Oh yeah sex with an underage student and touching of a family member. The house he moved into is next to one I tried to buy originally when I moved out here.
@shanaber nice run
@marisap2010 how’s the hip feeling?
@polksagirl01 that is a pretty specific cake
So Skip has been running at school with some boy she met and he lives in the area of the school and has been taking her to all these great parks and places to run, I'm so happy for her. Her campus actually has a 5 mile trail in the wood she runs on too. Last night she sends me a picture a kid from her XC/T&F team is going to school nearby and they met up to run. She said it was like old times.

Not sure what will happen this weekend. I'm helping Mom with a yard sale tomorrow - we'll get up before dawn. And a fishing tournament on Saturday -and again, before dawn! Walking counts, so I might do that if I can't make myself run. Hoping to have a nice long run on Sunday!
I've never run in just a bra before. The track I use in the early morning has it's longest side along a highway and there are a couple of older men out there walking that I'd hate to give a heart attack to.
Onward...6 -
Sept total: 7/60 miles
9/2: 3.5 miles
9/3: 3.5 miles
Tempo run was on the schedule today. This week is rough weather wise. At 7am it was already 84F with 88% humidity and a dew point of 76. It feels like you just don't get enough oxygen when the air is that wet! But, I did it. I set out with no expectations of maintaining the pace the plan called for but was able to do it without dying! Even though I feel so slow right now, I know that I'm getting stronger and faster because I know for a fact that I absolutely could not have tolerated this pace in this heat last summer.
If I remember correctly, @Scott6255 lives in Texas, right? We don't have 50's forecasted where I am but we are supposed to get some crisp 60's and I am sooooo looking forward to it! Now I just have to hope that this isn't just a tease!5 -
September Goal: 100 Miles
9/1: 6.22 miles
9/2: 5.05 miles
9/3: 6.06 miles
17.33/100 miles completed for September
962.56/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 6 miles this morning. It was ~70°F with 99% humidity. It was a lot tougher than yesterday, but not quite as tough as Tuesday's run. I managed a pace of 10:48 so even though I wasn't as fast as yesterday, I was happy to keep it under 11 min/mile. I am starting to train for my half that is scheduled for Nov. 7th. There have been a few live races around here so I am hopeful that we will get to run. I'm a little nervous, but it is a really small race (they limit it to 100 people even before Covid) and it looks like the company running it has done a few others and they are staggering starts and requiring masks at the start and skipping awards ceremonies and such. So I guess we'll see. My training plan called for a pace run today, but since I ran yesterday's run at a pretty close to 10k race pace I'm switching yesterday and today.
@martaindale I think @Scott6255 is in the Dallas area. I'm about 2 hours west of there and we have some 50's in our forecast for next week. I'm really looking forward to that, but I'll be happy with 60's too.
