WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the September 2020 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10808706/september-2020-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until October 1, 2020 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges:https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

Welcome to the Challenge
I'm in for 115 miles5 -
Okay, after skipping both August and September checking in (I did run, honest!) I'm definitely IN for October. I'm signing up for 70km this month - I've had a promotion at work, so can't guarantee the time, but I really want to get myself out and moving and this will help me get out there and run.
ETA - thank you, @skippygirlsmom for setting up this month's challenge!6 -
Thanks for setting us up!
Welcome back @hmaddpear! Congrats on your promotion, although commiseration on the more work part of it.
I'm just going to go with the 100 mile club again. I have a big work deadline October 16 and then hopefully some more hiking planned so I don't think I'll rack up high running miles. It's just survival and trying to keep up the run streak for the next couple of weeks.

With Javelina Jallucinations I will be aiming for 100 miles from 9/28 to 11/1. So I guess a few less than 100 for October.7
-
My goal for October is to get my surgery done and start on the road to recovery. Will try to get some running in before hand, but no idea as to how much, so, I'll just leave it at that.14
-
Simple goal for October, train well and stay healthy and injury free for the Auckland Half on Nov 2nd. It’s my big one for the year!8
-
I'm going for 100 miles again! Let's see if lightning strikes twice in a row!9
-
Good Morning Runners! I retired September 29, 2019 & thought I would be running a LOT more because I would have a lot more time. I never realized how sedentary my life really was sitting at a desk most of the day. Well now I am busy all day moving around so I am not running a LOT more! My goal for October is 43.35 miles! My 2020 goal is 520 miles, 10 miles a week or 43.35 miles a month! So far this year I'm a little ahead of schedule! Good Running My Friends.

Welcome @BeverlyW1108 !1
-
Hey, y'all! Even though I didn't reach my goal last month, I'm pretty sure I would have without my ankle business, so I'm moving the goal up to 35 for October! I have two virtual races this month too (Dunder Mifflin run and a Thriller/halloween run).5
-
Welcome@BeverlyW1108
Thanks again @skippygirlsmom for setting up October
Going to stick with 100 miles this month. I have a bad habit of increasing to fast and inevitably getting injured along the way. So hoping to stay injury free. That is my main goal!8 -
Continuing with my goal of 170 k for October. Thanks again, @skippygirlsmom !!!5
-
I'm in for 100 miles again this month. Thanks again @skippygirlsmom for setting us up!
Welcome @BeverlyW1108 !4 -
Oh heyyyyyyyyyyy boo!
I don't know why I said that. It works for October though, right?
Anyway, I need at least 200 miles this month, but I want another PR for distance so let's say 216. August was 215. Won't get it for September, but whatever. rotfl
Current situation: Setting my alarm for 2AM Saturday so I can watch the London Marathon. I am SO excited to see this!9 -
Can't believe it's Q4 already. Let's say 100km.
My actual goal for Oct. is a 10km time trial. Scheduling it for the last day of the month and goal is less than 60min. Found a friend to pace me and all. We'll see what happens.
@skippygirlsmom Thanks for setting us up!9 -
@skippygirlsmom Thanks for setting it up!
Going to say 80 for this month. My usual 100 might not be doable now that I have added spin to my routine.
Did 78 last month, due to hamstring issues, so 80 seems doable.
Welcome to the new peeps!7 -
Tapering for my virtual Marine Corp Marathon on October 25 so I will say 125 miles for the month.8
-
Thanks for the welcomes! I’ve been in this group for a year just not reading much or posting at all. Looking forward to actual races starting up again.5
-
Thanks for setting us up @skippygirlsmom
I was supposed to be running a HM on the 25th, but of course it was cancelled, but I continued following the plan for it. I added up the runs Hal has planned for me for the last few weeks of the plan, and including the HM it came to 125km. Part of me wants to run the distance just because. However I have no idea what this month is going to be like with local lockdowns and my Dad's operation and etc etc etc.
So, possible goal of 125km but real goal of just surviving the storm.

I wasn't very active in the September thread, but I'm still in! I have to finish up a 100 mile challenge this month, and I've got a 10K virtual race (my first one).
I'm going to aim for 60 miles this month.6 -
I'm in for the 100 Mile Club again assuming the weather cooperates and there are no more fires!6
-
My plan calls for about 70, so we'll see.
I have an actual, real life race this month!! This was a rescheduled race from May that I totally forgot about. It's an easy trail run around a wildflower farm in the TX hill country. Luckily, it's only a 10k because if it was any longer, I don't know if I could be ready for it. But, as luck would have it, my plan has me running 6 miles that day anyway! I haven't seen what precautions will be put into place, but it's a fairly small race any way so I'm not too nervous about it. I'm really looking forward to getting to race again!!13 -
Hi all. It’s a strength day for me today but jumping on to set a plan for 80 miles this month. Would love to do 100 again but between weather and potential lockdowns that looks a bit of a stretch. We shall see...
Wishing everyone a safe and happy month of running x6 -
100 mile club for me6
-
10/1 – 5.23 miles
Goal – 125 miles
Beautiful morning. It was a cool 48F (sorry for the heat wave you’re having @shanaber) and the moon and stars were shining brightly. The moon was a beautiful yellow/orange color. Coincidentally, my Garmin shows my run as red and orange. I had to drop something off at church this morning so I decided to run in “town” for a different route. I underestimated the traffic at 6:00 am. The main highway through town is a busy one and only a short section has sidewalks. I looped through the streets of the one and only subdivision a couple of times to keep off the main road.
@rheddmobile – so sorry about your finger. Sounds very painful.

February Total: 167k
March Total: 181k

September Total: 176k
2020 Total through September: 1584k / 176k per month
Sunny, upper 40s F, and less wind than yesterday. Went with shorts and short sleeves, which was nice in the sun but a little cool in the shade. Yesterday's wind knocked a lot of walnuts down.
My route on Garmin Connect on my computer is all one color (blue). My route on my Garmin Connect App on my phone is blue and green. Yesterday's had some yellow and red in it -- looks like an exotic snake.
Glad I didn't join the "Cut Yer Finger Club" for September. A club of two is already two too many.
Now off for my first shingles vaccine shot and trout fishing.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders -- Completed 9-29
2020 races:
9-8 to 9-13 "Virtual Boston with Vincent" Time goal 5:15:00; actual time 4:47:016 -
Replying to your Sep comment in October @kgirlhart but yes! I have a 3 (almost 4) month old and a 2.5 year old. So sleeping is really hit or miss lately. I'm surprising myself that I'm still going out for runs on days when I have a rougher night, but I know if I used that as an excuse to not run every time, I'd never get into running again!8
-
@Tramboman the girl that works across the hall from me goes trout fishing all the time! I made cod last night for the first time. Didn't hate it. The whole spread was baked cod, peas, carrots, kale and collard greens, and battered cod. Anyway I am pretty sure I have never had trout. Are you going to keep them and eat them or throw them back?
In September, I had 206.75 miles! I remember when I was sure I could never do "something like that." My mentality now is totally different - Now, it's more along the lines of "hmmm how far CAN I go?"
Anyway, back to work. Love you all. Happy running.10 -
Good October morning to y'all!
10/1 5.41 pushed myself and my last mile was 10:54 as opposed to the 11's and 12's I've been doing.
The temp was a very nice upper 50's and I guess I was feeling frisky. LOL!
@Tramboman I love to go fishing, too, but we fish for big mouth bass! We usually throw them back, but occasionally keep them to eat.
Space Race miles: 194.25 of 248.57 -
I've been using the Run with Hal app. He wants me to do 7 miles today. HAHAHAHa I don't have time for 7 miles on a weekday. He will have to settle for whatever I can get in after work & before dinner. Maybe if I was a faster runner I could do 7 miles on a weekday but I max out on time at about 5 miles. I've looked through the app & there's no way to enter parameters like that. This is when it's nice to have an actual person. You can talk and adjust it. Oh well.6
