Going for 25 miles again. Missed last month by 1 mile. Our weather has got very wet and windy, we're getting the tail ends of the hurricanes. I got blown along the front of my house on Saturday trying to pick up bit of the satelite dish.

I ran 4.35 miles this morning. It's my mini taper before my race on Saturday. It was a good run. It was pretty chilly but I was comfortable in shorts with sleeves and gloves. I think it will be a little warmer Saturday plus the sun will be up so it should be perfect running weather. I'm really looking forward to it.
I tend to opt for a light jacket to start out in. It's easy enough to shed while running and tie around your waist when you get warmed up. In bigger races (pre-C), I would sometimes wear an old long sleeve shirt that I didn't mind dropping and loosing since a lot of the bigger races have designated drop areas or have someone who comes along and picks up all the discarded clothing.

@quilteryoyo - If you aren't self-quarantined this weekend, you should come do the Roan Mountain 10k. Our mutual friend, Bob, is the race director. It's supposed to be a tough course with a 2-mile uphill finish, but walkers are welcome if you aren't up to that distance and those with an overall pace of over 13:00/min can start an hour early. The race is part of the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour.

Quick update as I’ve been all out of sorts due to the election.
7.5 miles today. Got my cold gear out, and headed out. Tights and long sleeve half zip. Lucky I had a tshirt under as well as half way through I got hot and has to take it off Lol. It started at 40F, felt much warmer after. So not too bad. Still also going to take while to get used to what to wear.

8 miles plus a long walk on the Greenline! Easy long run not feeling “easy” yet but working on it, slowed way down and tried to just let it flow.
Absolutely perfect day for running. Shorts and singlet weather, golden light streaming through the trees and leaves gently crunching underfoot.
Another thing I love about this time of year is that the interesting birds are back at my feeder! Yesterday in addition to our usual crowd we had nuthatches, indigo buntings, and an oriole!7 -

My first run post-half on Tuesday was quite uncomfortable - sore ankle and quad and very, very heavy legs, however an extra day's rest, plus an all important trip to the osteo to straighten me out (you should have heard/felt the clunk my hip made when he yanked on my leg!) meant that this morning's run was not only pain free, but super enjoyable and surprisingly fast.
I'm slowly getting over my disappointment about my performance in the Auckland Half. My coach posted a podcast saying 'one of his athletes performed well below their ability' and went on to talk about race psychology. I strongly suspect that was me! I totally convinced myself I can't run 'that' fast, when I actually can.
I'm having a one-on-one with him tomorrow to go through everything and make a plan going forwards. His suggestion at the finish line when I was fighting back tears over my performance was that I race the Kerikeri Half in three weeks' time. It's a straight line course, comprising 7km gently uphill followed by 15km downhill, and is super fast. This should help me get my head around running sub-5 minute kilometres for 21km.
I've done the Auckland then Kerikeri halves back-to-back twice before. Looking at my records, in 2011, my Kerikeri time was 6 minutes faster than my Auckland time, and in 2016, Kerikeri was over 8 minutes faster.
My one problem was that I couldn't find anyone to go to Kerikeri with me on the 21st to do the half as most of my friends are running the Queenstown marathon that same weekend. Kerikeri is a small town 4 hours north of where I live so requires an overnight stay as the event starts at 7am. However, I was prepared to go alone and was trying to find accommodation for the Friday night (this is usually all booked out months in advance).
However, I suggested to my husband we have a family weekend away, expecting him to say no (he's fully supportive of my running in that he doesn't mind me disappearing all the time and spending all my money on shoes but he's not the sort to show up at the finish line). However, he not only said 'sure' but he texted a friend of his who has a holiday home in Kerikeri to see if we could stay with them and was instead offered use of the house for the weekend as they're elsewhere then - apparently it's very flash and complete with a pool. On top of that, it's 2.5km from the township so I can run in as a warm up before catching the bus to the start, and the course goes past the end of the road so the children can cheer me on, if they feel so inclined, when I go past.
Now I'm super excited, and can't wait to race again. This time with my head on right, right?
PS. Thanks for all your positive feedback, and I appreciate the compliments on my speed, but for those who can't quite understand why I'm upset that I'm not faster when I'm clearly pretty speedy, can I give you a little context, which may also help some of you with your running goals: When I got into running back in 2008, my goal was to run 5km in 30 minutes. 10 years ago it was to run a sub-2 hour half marathon. Seven years later I finally managed to break 1:50, and running 1:45 is my latest goal. This just shows that anyone can improve if they keep working at it.
And for further context, I'm not that young - I'm 46, so you can definitely get faster even if you think you're old! Apparently starting late is a good thing - peaking in your 20s means you have a lifetime to look back on your glory days with no hope of ever racing that fast again, but if you start in your 30s or 40s, while you will never achieve your absolute physical potential, you will continue to improve and reach new PBs for years.14 -

I got a pretty good run in today other than it got really hot. It is supposed to hit 96F here tomorrow and on Friday down to under 70! We might also get some rain over the weekend.

Ooh @ContraryMaryMary that’s so exciting for you! Loved reading your story of how you’ve progressed as a runner. As someone who started age 40 it’s encouraging.
Kind of needed some positivity because I’m finding it very hard getting back into things - feels like I’ve lost so much fitness in just a couple of weeks! Trying to be humble and patient but this morning it was freezing and foggy and hard to breathe, so I was slow. Foggy pic in spoiler...

@ContraryMaryMary, I am so happy that you are in a better place about your run, and I hope Kerikeri goes amazing.
I’m so not feeling this time change. I only ran for half an hour after work last night, but it was already dark when I finished. I guess I will start driving to the gym to run on the treadmill or indoor track now, as morning runs during the week just won’t work for me.
Last night, Garmin had me do a 20 min easy run with 5 minute warmup/cooldown. I adjusted my 5k time goal following last weekend’s race, so it looks like my runs will start getting a bit faster end of this week.

@ContraryMaryMary Glad it worked out for you to do the Kerikeri HM! And have a great family weekend to boot! You are going to do great. Looking forward to hearing what your coach has to say. I do get being disappointed to not do as well as you expect. I'm pretty competitive and am always wanting to improve. I doubt I will ever get to a sub 30 min 5K, but then again, I never thought I would do a sub 10 min mile either, and I did. Since I didn't start consistently running before I was 59, I don't have to worry about looking back at my glory days. I love being in the best shape of my life at 61.
@Faebert Cool picture. Freezing fog can make everything so pretty. Hang in there. You are doing great to get out and get it done.

@marisap2010 the time change is rough! I wanted to put off my run until after work today but I knew how unmotivated I'd be to get out in the dark. It's hard enough to get out and walk the dog, and putting on both of our lighted vests and layers, etc., feels so not worth it sometimes. Good job keeping on your training plan!

I didn't have my normal strength training session today because my trainer is on vacation. I'm sure he expects that I'll do a workout anyway, but I say we're both on vacation. I really didn't want to get out and run either but it is really beautiful out and over 50 degrees so how could I not. I started out slowly but picked up the pace - my first mile was 11:04 and the last was 9:10!

Double posting because I was just thinking as I wrote the above post about preparing for my upcoming 5k race. And how much 5k races are a huge mental challenge for me, I get so freaked out that I can't hold the pace and I want to give up. Then I go over to facebook and saw this - so true. Just go out and run.

@quilteryoyo I figure if I’m chilly when I leave the house I’m good for the cold, if I’m warm or comfortable I get too hot. It’s a science that I can’t figure out ha ha today was 45 I wore shorts, a light long sleeve tech shirt and gloves, gloves came off at mile 2 and I was fine.
@polskagirl01 I had a goldendoodle want to run with me today, she was a pup and all excited to join. I had a vague idea what house she lived it and finally mom came out to see where she was…ah like ¼ mile up the street with me. Pretty pictures

That's great, but I seem to be getting slower regardless of what I do to try to get faster. I'm slower than most despite being in what should be close to the fastest age/gender group. It is frustrating to see new runners twice my age go out and run their first marathon faster than my PR. Add that some of them are heavier than me and I just don't understand why I suck so much.6 -
@brittanystebbins95 welcome back! Just take it slow and easy. You will be pushing your baby in a running stroller in no time

Started feeling pretty crummy yesterday..just tired, headache, sore throat..(I am NOT sick). Took some Tylenol, Airborne tablet, felt a little better before bed. Woke up an hour later than normal (I am NOT sick), and acted like I was feeling normal, even though I was feeling about the same. Went through my pre-run morning ritual (I am NOT sick). Got outside and decided just to run a very slow 10K. First 4 miles were slow (about 15 seconds slower than normal), then as the sweat started pouring out of me, I felt better and pushed the last 2 miles a bit harder. Ended with a normal overall pace (I am NOT sick).

Same. I've been around the same speed since I started. I can't break a 30 min 5k. I can't break 2:30 HALF marathon. I have learned to accept this is the best I can do and I will always be a middle of the pack runner. I've only seen improvement in my shorter trail times because my first season was learning how to run trails.8 -

Your speed is YOUR speed - not anyone else's. Some are faster; some are slower.
I once ran 2 miles in 14:40. I'm a little bit slower now, and 42 years older. (All right, I'm a lot slower.)
Once you get to the point where you've maximized your physical, mental, and emotional speed capability, you are who you are as a runner. If the maximum were not defined as the absolute best you can do, it wouldn't be the maximum.
I know I have not yet raced to my "absolute" best time. But I also know I have run every race as hard as I could on race day, given whatever limitations I'm dealing with on that day. I may not be "happy," but I need to be satisfied.7
