Christmas Dinner
We decided what we wanted for Christmas dinner. We're having tacos. My husband and I will be making them. Then I think we've got Christmas puddings for dessert.
My mother is arranging a Zoom/Skype thing for my Christmas morning (their Christmas Eve).
Otherwise, hopefully we'll get out for a ride!

(((Dr. Katie:))) I hope you have already found your finger splint. If not, wishing you best luck.
Barbie: Walking your dogs in the field is a smart way to have some exercise and enjoy a little snow. I think it is a great idea.
Machka: Tacos for Christmas Dinner sounds wonderful.
It is early, but I’m headed to bed—with a very nice treat. I ordered a book by Robin Carr, one of my favorite authors. Return to Virgin River came in the mail today! I can’t wait to open it and start reading.

The combination of snow and rain and cold temperatures yesterday made walking on the streets very iffy this morning so I walked the dogs in the big field and then went out later by myself to walk in the streets. I got my 10,000 steps so I'm happy with that. My walking friend didn't come over for dog walking but went out later by herself. It will be dry for the next few days so I should be able to walk tomorrow morning.
The chicken soup Jake made turned out great but it was a huge pot so we'll have more for another day or two.
Our top priority is staying safe so we limit our shopping to curbside pick up and ordering online. I ordered stamps online to keep me out of the post office until after Christmas.

Hey, Barbie. I am trying to work up to 10,000 steps a day. How long does it take you to do it each day? I assume you break it up because you are out walking the dogs. I must admit that 10,000 steps is a little daunting on a daily basis. I hit 7,000 today, so I am getting there.

My son didn't appear as promised yesterday with the presents for me to wrap, so I texted him. I knew he would have been run off his feet. He already looked exhausted in the gingerbread house photo!
He said they had all just got back from Glow Wild (Christmas light show) so could he bring them tomorrow morning. (Today)
I'm going to make a quick dash this morning before exercise for bread, tomatoes. (Found just two tomatoes yesterday ) Also milk. Will try to co-ordinate.
Dr Katie - Grrr! Be very, very careful! That's exactly when you injure yourself. Beds are the devil.
I rang my friend Gwendolen yesterday as she is alone. She was busy on a Zoom to friends, but called me back. I will see her again today on our group call.
Her friends are old, over 80, and not brilliant at technology. One of them doesn't have a camera on her old laptop, so her part of the Zoom is audio only usually. Yesterday the microphone didn't work either, so my friend called her on the phone and held the phone to her own microphone so the other friend could hear her!!!!! She was exhausted
We have to be so grateful for this amazing technology. My DH was so happy the other day to talk to his girls face to face.
He's trying out a moulded knee cushion he got from Amazon. Hoping it will help his back while he sleeps.
Oh well. How are Terri and Kate UK. ? Any lettuces up your way?

"Get to do"s and "chose well"sChose well: take BP, reconciled credit card statement, tku note to T, dogs to powerline,
Bonus: DMV followup form for title, unpacked, connected new turntable, 3 loads laundry, tiny tree into stand, lights and ornaments from garage to house.
Get to do: take BP, dogs to powerline, call R, corrected roster to Cal-Or, index mutual aid files, watch STAS Day 18 (go sniff), submit grant pics and receipts, test Bluetooth speaker so can do BB&B or T’ai Chi from voice recordings, make experimental almond paste, declutter sideboard, practice new dances (I ain’t never gonna love nobody but Cornell Crawford (Alley cat), A Little Less Broken, One margarita, I’m so used to being broke, All Night, Nothing but You, Blame it on my beating heart, Homesick); finish mulching flowerbed; broadcast cover crop seed in veg garden areas, invest another 10 minutes in prepping living trust, Freddie’s for complete series TDAP <$48, get Shingrix vaccine, find and configure a screen time popup, figure out where to plant naked lady bulbs, and soon as it warms up above 50 and dries out below 60% humidity I’ll tape and spray paint those rusted areas of Aunt Elsie’s stove. Reconcile Joe’s EOB’s Thrivent shows only 2263.48 so far, Monday call State Fire Marshall’s office re: reporting, next BGBS ask Terry about GB’s FD firetruck tax levy – contacts, media, advocate???, Monday: recycling.
Reward: inventory seeds, plan next year’s garden, wishlist replenishments, ask faucet question, if answer ok order.
Do Good December
23: Choose to give or receive the gift of forgiveness: Forgiving myself for that 1959 Christmas ornament debacle and all subsequent lies to Mama and Papa.
Julie sorry to hear your friend got stuck in the subway and couldn’t come. Glad you got to enjoy your “divinely tidier space”
Machka back when I worked and commuted in the Bay Area, some of the most relaxing time was on the bus ride home. Sunset and the bay like silk. Precious moments. Loved Mr. Bean and the Sals.
SuziQ was your dress velvet? the pic. And really looking forward to the virtual cocktail mixer report
Flea the only venison I’ve ever liked was jerky. Sorry but your grandma’s pies don’t appeal  to this 4th generation city gal  Congrats on working up to 7K steps/day. I’ll follow you as I’m only averaging a little over 5K steps/day.
Heather “…lots of things are unobtainable locally…” Truth this. Since moving to rural southern coastal Oregon I’ve come to depend on Amazon (and Chewy) for what I can’t get here. That and an every few months trip to Medford for TJ’s and Winco. Driving 3.5 hours one way to get things I can’t get anywhere else, not even from Amazon? Maybe crazy but that’s what I do.
Kay hoping the splint has surfaced by now. If it were our house, Shadow would have stolen it and chewed it to pieces.
Ginny you have way more stores in your town than we do. Freddie’s, BiMart, Grocery Outlet and RiteAid are it. Oh and two auto parts stores, a hardware store and a lumberyard. Con grats for walking a whole hour. Well done!
Michele SMH that your MDs office didn’t have the courtesy to call you to reschedule, even though I’m sure your glad you didn’t go in where there was an outbreak. Nuts!
Barbie brava for finding ways to walk safely in those icy conditions. “Our priority is staying safe…” Yes this. I need to remind myself of this when I chafe to be out and about.

Amazon and delivery: here many many places (almost all) have been delivering, or at least have click and collect, since the on and off confinements, curfews etc. Some things are needed in a rush, but not everything.
I can understand the need/wish for lower prices.
I bought my shoe-shelf on Amazon, because I couldn't find one I liked anywhere else and didn't want to spend an eternity looking for one.
Same for some other products.
I don't think of buying food online, except if it's something I can't get live, but I have at least 5 supermarkets within 10 minute walk.
In France there are other chains. I guess here there is the idea is also about supporting the national economy somewhat. Supporting other chains based in the country, is not as good as supporting small local businesses, but is maybe an intermediate step.
There is frequent concern about ever-greater wealth going to GAFA (google-amazon-facebook-apple).
I think disproportionate wealth sharing is a major issue in the present and is at great risk to be even much more so in the future.
For food I have 2 organic chains (owned by bigger supermarket chains) just across the street less than 3 minutes walk for me. One has free delivery if more than 50 euros, but I have to do shopping there. In fact many items but fresh produce can be ordered online. I wouldn't feel totally confidant about ordering some produce online, due to ripeness and freshness.
But I like to buy my own food, live. During lockdown they didn't have enough delivery service available, and requested to only order delivery if one was sick or at risk. So I would shop about 1x a week. But I am not a highly at risk person regarding COVID nor in regular interaction with one. That would be different.
But everyone has to make his or her own choices.
What seems normal at one period, may not seem so at another period.
I do buy occasionally on Amazon. I have some friends who refuse to buy at amazon due to some issues about workers rights.
Here is an anti-union video shown to amazon managers. This said, I would guess that this info is likely shared in many many places, but simply isn't leaked in a video.
There is 13% union membership in the usa and only 9% in France.1 -

Onions are really easy to grow ... might be an idea to put in an onion patch in your garden so that you've got them and don't have to go to a shop to get that part of your produce.

auntie BK and Ginnytez you are right, I am enjoying the tidier space even though my friend didn't come.
I finally heard from my friend who was walking home (with subway blocked mid-path) over an hour later at around 7:30pm. There is curfew at 8pm so she couldn't really come then.
I was glad to hear she was ok. She is type 1 diabetic and has occasionally had health issues, close to fainting spells. I thought being stuck in subway if she had an issue it would be tricky, though I'm sure she always has the needed stuff with her.
Cleaning lady is coming in 45 minutes. She will be surprised. furniture is all moved around and place madly tidied. She is not incredible but she is ok. She can still do the bathroom and kitchen once over and the floors. and if time continue on a window...a mirror, or around light switches and the like, dusting, little things.
I wan't to go out for a short walk before she comes but am dragging.
I think the full day of physical activity yesterday tired me and also made me sleep rather well.
I generally feel more up beat after going for even a tiny walk.

Got really behind with reading so working back through pages.
Sad news from my DD yesterday, her young dog died in his sleep, so sad, he was only 2 and such a character. Her whole family are distraught, they’ve had an awful year. Her partners stepmother died and he couldn’t be with his Dad, their 13 year old dog had to be put to sleep, they didn’t get any financial help from Govt for loss of business and now young dog gone. They don’t feel like celebrating Christmas. I wish I could be with them but can’t.
Will just be DH and I on the day and meal on 27th with DS is now cancelled too.
Sorry for the moaning I know there are folks much worse off than us, we have each other and we are fit and well, warm and well fed (too well😀) so much to be thankful for.
Stay safe and well

Looking forward to a nice quiet Christmas.

So sorry Kate UK . The sudden change of plans caused a lot of grief for so many. Sorry to hear that they fell through the cracks of government support. I asked my son today about his job, and he said "Fine. It's fine." I'm sure it isn't.
He rang me because DDIL has developed a sore throat after seeing a friend last week who has tested positive today. She has had one negative test at a drive in last week, but today they are privately hiring a couriered test which will get the results by tomorrow. He also has a bit of a throat now. So he won't see us, even at a distance, to pick up the presents for the kids so will pick them up from the doorstep and add the ones he has bought to them. He won't give us any present or card. This new variant is spreading so fast he doesn't want to touch anything. . ....even the doorbell.
If the test comes back negative, they will meet us on the beach on Christmas Day and the other grandparents will still visit them for the day.
We are planning a Zoom for Christmas Eve. (Not when the 5 Lessons and Carols starts at 3 pm! )
I'm not so much worried about them, although you never know, with Long Covid and everything, but I feel sorry for the kids with everything in limbo. Let's hope it's just a sore throat, but I'm not counting any chickens.
On a positive note, I went out before exercise this morning to buy bread, milk, tomatoes, etc. No tomatoes to be had.
Found everything else. Gorgeous bread, safely in the freezer. The queue at the butchers was stretching down the street!
DH bravely set out after exercise on a tomato hunt and found loads at the Co-op. Plus cream, whole milk, and scallions. We are planning to make Panna Cotta for our Christmas dessert, so he saved the day! A nice fruit coulis to go with it.
So, all is a bit of a mess in the family dept. If they are both positive we might be delivering food after Christmas.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx8 -
This year has taken such a toll on so many in so many ways.My little business has received no assistance from government,so hubby and son are taking whatever, wherever and not getting paid what the job is worth. But we are making it.Plus the veggies at the farm go in the freezer and because we give un sellable produce to neighbors with livestock, they in turn bring meat from their farm.It hurts my heart to know so many of y’all are going through different times right now. From my heart,I send love, hugs, and prayers to each of you.

Flea, when I walk without dogs, I figure about 100 steps per minute. The rate is slower with dogs because they stop and sniff a lot. I walk for 15 minutes with dogs before breakfast, 90 minutes with dogs and my friend after breakfast, and 15-30 minutes in the afternoon with dogs. I didn't start out with 10,000 steps. I just made my walks a little longer each day.

Machka - Alice and the vacuum cartoon drew a startled bark of laughter from me. “Worst of all …” followed by that last beat my low mood back for a good 15 minutes. I kept chuckling when I thought of it. Something that really hits my kind of fun will do that!
We DID get some wet sloppy snow that disappeared by late yesterday morning. The power outage that came with it due to a huge downed tree lasted longer. I was worried about another chilly night, but it came back on just before dark. Saved by PSE.
SuziQ SFL, I’m sorry people don’t pick up on the “I have no plans.” It sounds like your family situation can be ghastly. I’m afraid my eldest daughter can be both an over- and an under-poster. Anything re her trans woman niece brings rants about a single episode of sex offense at age 11, anything her other nieces or nephews do that is noteworthy gets ignored.
Heather, you understand depression well. Self-sabotage can be a huge part of it as well. I’m eating more candy and fewer healthful foods. It’s not enough to gain weight but is throwing my metabolism off. Also my date is today, I’m due to leave in 45 minutes and have done nothing to get ready. And now that THAT has got my attention I will stop. I’ll post about the date soon, I promise.

Hi Ladies. Thanks for posting all the festive photos. I am in the least festive mood possible, but I enjoy the lights and trees. I don't think I'm alone. Usually, when I look across our canyon, the houses are covered in lights. This year, there is almost nothing lit up.
Sharon - Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. Hang in there.
Dr Katie - I hope you find your "finger." I'm betting it's around the bed somewhere.
Heather - Great holiday wear. Sorry your family is feeling sick. I hope it's not COVID.
Kate - So sad about your DD's dog.
Debbie, Napa - You are very generous. I’m sure everyone loves the treats.
Machka - It will take time to figure out what is worth “cutting” and can be cut to make time for relaxing. You can’t cut out doc appts. and things of that nature, but you can let the dust sit for a while. It’ll be back a few minutes after you clean it anyway. It took me years to figure it out. Relaxing doesn’t necessarily mean doing nothing either. Working in the garden is relaxing to some. To me, it’s a chore. Refinishing furniture does the same for others. Some find relaxation in vacuuming. You will figure it out.
I also lose interest in movies and even TV shows, very quickly. I haven’t seen a really good movie in a very long time.
SuziQ - That is unfortunate what your cousin posted on a public forum. My sisters and I have scolded a different sister for “over sharing” on FB. Since we did that, she has been a lot better. She still puts too much up there for my taste, but it’s far better than before.
Busy day today. The plumber is coming to install a new garbage disposal and a contractor is coming to measure the space in the bathroom for a new cabinet. I also have to make sure to schedule yet another doc appt. Always easy during the holidays....ugh. I need to get an EKG to make sure my shortness of breath is not bronchial. I am sure it's due to anemia and complicated by allergies.
I went to the doc yesterday about my procedure coming up right after the new year. He mentioned the possibility of amenorrhea. I cannot for the life of me determine why that is bad for someone about to go through menopause anyway. There really is nothing on the internet about why it's a negative for someone my age. Do any of you have a clue? I have to decide if I want an ablation and that's where he cautioned me about the amenorrhea. Why is it bad?
Have a great day.

Thanks! I do remember how much slower I walked when I had my dog -- especially since he was sick. I think I also walk about 100 steps a minute. Too bad we can't be walking buddies!!

I just experienced a computer system failure for the first time in memory. Luckily, DH was able to help me through it. I had some comments when the system failed, and they are lost. Starting again from here:
Kate UK: I am so sorry that your daughter has had so many losses & also so sorry about the loss of her dog. Pets are important members of a family.
Heather: This pandemic is the worst health disaster I’ve ever experienced, and it doesn’t seem to be getting easier. We are on our doctor’s list for vaccinations when they are available and it cannot be too soon. Sending good wishes to you and your whole family. I love the photo of you and your brother. :flowerforyou:

Karen: Beautiful photos. Thanks!

Since hubby and I couldn't get away to anywhere warm last week, we spent the night at the Oregon Garden resort. My husband is diabetic(takes Metformin) and half Japanese- like your husband, did NOT like the idea of brown rice. He only likes Japanese sticky rice and large amounts of it. He is trying to cut back. I have started making his fried rice with 1/2 Chinese rice(because that is better for this recipe) and 1/2 riced cauliflower- Both son and husband love it and don't even know it isn't just rice. I have also added brown rice to the fried rice, again, they can't tell. I have made a few things with brown rice and he has agreed that it was a better choice than his Japanese rice.
He is not the veggie eater that I am- I would be happy with just veggies many meals. If I ask him if he wants a salad to go with it, he will usually say no but if I make one and just serve it with his meal, he will eat and enjoy it.
His numbers are creeping up some so he is starting to watch it a little closer but for him stress is a bigger problem than the food he is eating- if he could learn to handle the stress better it would be great, but he doesn't- never lets things go either. (I am talking years and years and he won't let it go).

And here are pictures of our inside decorations:
My husband is a techy guy, so our Christmas lights are individually programmable, so we started out with a blue tree, but then went to green/red blinking to match my tinsel trees.
My husband has a strange sense of humor. He printed this for me on his 3d printer. My response? "FIRST????"
