Heather - Unfortunately, every time I asked the gastroenterologist to repeat himself, he thought I meant I couldn't hear him, so he just said it louder, and my Southern upbringing wouldn't allow me to tell him to stop yelling at me. Comedy of errors, indeed.
Not very funny, but my sister called me to tell me that one brother called another who called another who called her, to let her know the first caller, my brother who is four years older, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I asked her "cancer of what?" and she said "I don't know, everything." I haven't spoken to him in 16 years. I know I should feel something. I don't. Which makes me feel defective.
Just glad the day is over... thank you all for the support in the meantime--I'm hoping the bump to the thyroid medication gets my energy levels back where they need to be, and doesn't send any of the other medications careening off the tightrope. I swore I would never be that sick old lady juggling medications and moaning... which probably shows you should never say never.

Did Gilad’s Step Aerobics DVD. Not bad. I do need to get back in the groove for exercise, but I’m getting there. The plan for tomorrow is to do an AM Yoga DVD.
Soup kitchen today and then I need to stop at WalMart to get a prescription. I also want to stop at Food Lion, I totally forgot to check out the hot dogs for vince when I was there Monday. I work this Monday and I’m afraid that I’m going to forget. Also, just in case they are out of stock, I know that they aren’t giving out rainchecks (due to the pandemic, that’s the reason all the time) because they don’t know that the warehouse will get the item in stock or when they will <why is this a problem since their rainchecks don’t have an expiration date?>. Afterwards, I’ll probably come home to make some chili for me to put in the freezer.
Katla – I love Healthy Choice mint chocolate chip ice cream. Do they even make it any more? Actually, I like any mint chocolate chip ice cream. But by the time I got finished, it was no longer a Healthy Choice

Stopped to see Lynette, had some coupons for her. I was very surprised that Ken has not gotten his vaccination yet. I have a feeling that Lynette just told them that he was in pain. If it had been me, I would have really pushed it. But it’s not me. Then the soup kitchen, then WalMart for a prescription which they didn’t have so I’ll have to go to another WalMart, probably tomorrow. Then Food Lion, the hot dogs I want are on sale only they were out of stock of them. Came home and made chili for me and the spinach feta pie for Adra. We’re going to see her tomorrow after we go to drop off things to be shredded.
Heather – “Cabs for Jabs” is a wonderful idea.
Lisa – did they mention an ablation on the heart?
Teresa OH – I’m not liking the way my coleslaw is looking so while I was at Food Lion I got another head of cabbage and I’ll try again. Your crochet is wonderful!
Barbara – when I was doing that step aerobics DVD, any time you had to step back, I made sure I stepped with the entire ball of my foot. I didn’t do any lunges. Actually, it’ll probably be a long time (if ever) before I do a lunge. Good luck at the dentist

Kylia maybe your MIL is telling you it’s a good thing you have to be away from the store for a whole afternoon… Thank goodness for the monitor. Hate it when doctors conclude (on inadequate evidence) that their patients’ issues are “all in their head.” Your Dr sounds like a good one. Beautiful dawn!

My husband had to deal with a doctor(his primary ph.) thinking the pain he was having was "all in his head".
He went in because he thought his knee was bad. Doctor first sent him to psych- then sent him to physical therapy. He wouldn't refer him to ortho. Thankfully one of my daycare parents worked in that dept at Kaiser. She got him in right away. That doctor originally thought he was trying to get out of work- but did send him for x-rays. As he was walking out of the room he said to get x-rays of his hips along with his knees. When he came back after the tests the doctor was sure treating him different- he told him- good news is your knees are fine, bad news is your hips are shot and you need to have them both replaced. He was 48 when he had them replaced the first time(then had them both again when the first set failed less than 5 yrs later)
Yea, pain was all in his head- NOT!

Debbie - quite a few years ago I fractured my ankle. I just KNEW something wasn't right. I kept asking for a bone density test over and over. My MD at the time kept saying "we don't recommend that for someone who hasn't gone thru menopause yet". But I kept on. To be honest, I think she did it mainly to shut me up. Boy, was she ever surprised when it came back that I had osteoporosis.

Lisa- In my non-medical opinion, I would pursue a cardiologist. I understand the medicine balance, but the heart meds shouldn't be zapping your energy. Like I said, I am not a doctor, but just wanted to share. Thank you for the information on the yogurt. I do take probiotics daily. I will try harder to get my yogurt in. If I don't take pills and miss too many days of yogurt, the yeast flares up.
I will catch up more in a few. On phone getting in steps.

Hi all, I'm new to this message board, but not to battle with my weight. 10 years ago I had a skiing accident that debilitates me because a surgeon botched the reconstruction and left a screw sitting behind my knee cap for 6 months. I am now losing weight from the heaviest I have ever been, due to a combination of not being able to exercise much and medication. In the past 3 years, I've gone through my 18-year marriage ending because I was "no longer sexually attractive" to my husband - his exact words the night he left, was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that affects my joints, had spinal surgery, found myself in a toxic relationship during quarantine where he stole all my money, and supported 3 people, him, my daughter, and his daughter. My husband stopped any support for our teenage daughter. I also went through menopause. I've also retained my dignity and kept working full time through it all.
I finally realised that unless I got my weight down I wouldn't feel good and would continue to be disabled. I am now 4.4 kg from a healthy bmi, and can zip up my goal dress. I am having a total knee replacement in May, so my no.1 priority is to get in shape for that, so when I step on the scales at the hospital, I am the lightest and fittest I can be, when I am recovering from the operation. I have shed a bad relationship where I lost myself and am recovering from gaslighting and insanity. I also got my daughter and me into a new more affordable apartment and got rid of all the clutter, physical and emotional.
I've withdrawn temporarily from my friends, but not my family, because I need time to myself to relax, collect my thoughts and not have to prove anything to anyone else. I am loving this solitary time. I'm not drinking, not being pressured or tempted to eat food I don't want, not being told that curvy is ok. For me, curvy isn't an option because of my joints. Apart from anyone else, I suffer from a lot of pain from my knee and my spine, which was caused a lot by weight gain over the past 10 years.
I will relaunch my social life when I have had the knee surgery, maybe start something new, maybe look for a partner. But I don't want that right now. I want to lose the weight, swim for fitness and not have to explain myself to anyone.
Having said that I am sure that there are people out there in a similar situation. If you are I'd love to hear how you are reclaiming your life.12 -

Just some thoughts on communication and how people get their needs met. I was born and raised in a small village in Alaska. Everyone from our area talks and responds slowly. Growing up it was a sign of respect to listen and and reflect and then respond. Now that I live in the outside world, I notice conversations sometimes pass me by. Even my DH will sometimes ask me a question and I will take such a long moment to respond that he thinks I haven't heard him. When I am in meeting with professionals, I sometimes take so long to respond on Zoom or FaceTime that others jump in thinking I'm not present. Zoom in wonderful because I can use the chat function and text my thoughts to everyone... some of the other platforms don't accommodate the texts. I felt very comfortable when I traveled in the south but less comfortable in the upper Northeast where the verbal communication is like a volleyball going back and forth. Funny... I love seeing the different ways communication works in different areas and in different professions. What a world we live in.

Hi ladies.
I'm doing okay. Diet is not wonderful but not terrible either. Mostly below 1200 calories except for one bad day. Exercise was going pretty well. I can do about 14 knee push-ups but then I get a sharp pain in my elbow. It went away again. I didn't do my marching today because I am still stiff from yesterday's workout.
My mom was extra tired this week. I suggested she might see a doctor, but she didn't like that idea. She is 88. My dad has been pushing her to exercise more, but she won't.
Expecting snow this weekend. I'm grateful for a warm house.

Dentist yesterday took longer and did not go well. Yes had to remove the bridge. Anchor tooth down below gum line so not strong enough to support new bridge. Need to extend over eyetooth, means another 2+ hr appointment to crown prep it.
Machka I have NOT enjoyed 2+ hours in the dentist’s chair. Thought of you as he had to give additional shots to numb the supposedly insensitive-to-pain root canalled tooth. Could your telehealth Dr order an MRI? Having such pain that you can’t step up onto the bus to get to work should be reason enough?
Dentist - Sorry about the dentist appointment. I can sympathise - mine haven't been great either. I apparently have rogue nerves that don't travel the usual paths and you might too.
Hip - I am going to make a GP appointment via telehealth as well. I have been so tired for some time now. I thought that when I finished my uni course I would have time to rest and would feel less tired. I am getting a little bit more sleep, I don't have quite so many deadlines (but still some), yet I feel more and more tired. So I'd like to get a full bloodwork thing done. And if my physio hasn't ordered an MRI on my hip, I'll get my GP to do it. But I suspect my physio will.
Speech Speed - This is one area I have had to develop patience. I do prefer people who talk slightly slower, especially here in Australia. I have become used to most of the accents here so that I don't hear them any more. I actually hear Canadian accents now even though I think I must still have mine. But there are still some Australian accents I have to listen closely to in order to understand them.
In addition, we have quite a high Asian population here. My uni classes consisted of about 50% Chinese, 40% Indian (from India), and about 10% from the Middle East and other areas of Asia. I was usually the only Australian. Occasionally there were 2 or 3 from Europe and in my last couple classes, there were a few from South America.
So we all had to speak slowly to understand each other!
And then there is my husband. The language centre of his brain has been affected so he has trouble expressing himself and finding words. He'll start talking and then stop to hunt for the word or a similar word or phrase. In that time, I quietly try to guess where he's going and what the word might be. Sometimes he'll get it and the conversation will continue. Other times, he'll get frustrated and want me to start guessing. I've actually become quite good at guessing but it means I really have to focus and the conversation is very stop-and-go. Patience. Much patience.

Speech- I speak quickly and change subjects quickly. Conversations between my family, friends, and can sometimes sound like a basketball game. (She has the ball, no wait, she has the ball, etc.) Eventually we sometimes get back to what we were originally talking about!😶 I try hard at work to slow down especially on the phone. We have a few customers who have had strokes or brain injuries or speech impediments that will only speak with me. I have learned to be patient and try to decifer(sp) what they are trying to communicate. Machka I too have to really pay attention with accents though. Most days my patience is good.
Debbie My physical therapist once told me that a lot of her clients that had k we replacements 15 years ago didn't find relief until they got hip replacements. It is amazing how much influence the hips have over the knees. In fact my exercises for my knees were actually to help my hips.
Barbara-i like the thought that my MIL was telling me it was okay to be home. Ohio has some gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.
Magaret- so sorry for you. ((HUGS)) Memorials can be so difficult right now especially if people live further away.
RVRita- Keep up doing the good job on your health.
Teresa Our weather folks are telling us 3-5" of snow Saturday night, followed by rain on Sundday, followed by some more snow. I am suppose to go to Cincinnati on Sunday to watch youngest granddaughters dance showcase so am keeping a close eye on the weather. I can take motion sickness meds to drive in snow, but really don't want to risk ice especially at night. Most of the drive is highway, but the last 20 miles are hilly, curvy, country roads. Fingers crossed. I would be gone from about 330pm -830. Your crocheting project looks wonderful. Please be sure to take a picture of the finished product.
Debbie We even have a white squirrel that comes out occasionally. We feed them well with an oak tree, beech trees, and black walnuts.They are fun to watch.
Annie- You make the best decision you can in any given moment. Okay is good. Life is a journey with ups and downs, twists and curves. We get through it with our village of family and friends.
Bought my husband a SMALL devil's food cake and some chocolates. He was happy. He grosses me out when he eats cake though. He puts it in a bowl and pours milk on it!😝 I don't do soggy! No dipping cookies in milk. No crackers in soup. No soggy buns on sandwiches. Soggy cereal-yuck! He enjoys them all. I have a hard time eating oatmeal even because of texture. It must be hot with lots of butter.

DianePenelope, welcome to our supportive group. Many of us have survived difficult times. Keep coming back and join the conversation. I have learned to take life one day at a time. I love this time of sheltering at home and the joy of interacting with almost nobody but my wonderful husband. I weathered a marriage to a man who robbed me blind and broke my heart and now am grateful for what I have.
All the talk about daffodils and hyacinths from some of you who live as far north as I do, inspired me to go out and look carefully at the ground and I am delighted to see that there are tiny shoots of both daffodils and hyacinths in my yard.
Another friend organized a Zoom meet-up this afternoon so she and I and several other friends could all be together when my friend opened the package with the blanket and hat I knitted. She was thrilled that not only was there a newborn blanket, but also a larger blanket and two hats.

I asked my doctor for the bone density test too- she said no, not at my age, even though both my parents had osteoporosis, dad's was worse than mom's. I will ask her again the next time I see her, now that I am getting closer to 60.

I asked a doctor for a bone density test when I was in my early 40s. I was attending university and had stopped in at the university GP's office to check my shoulder (I had crashed while cycling and separated my shoulder) and thought I'd ask about the bone density test.
I have to give her the benefit of the doubt because she had never seen me before and I was attending university, but her response was ... "Oh, we don't do those for anyone under 30!!"

We're nearing the end of January. @barbiecat will be posting a new thread for February shortly.
But meanwhile ... today I got my rowing machine and treadmill hooked up and working again. I had purchased a new phone in December and had to set up the apps which track what I do again.
In doing so, I rowed for 6 minutes to test the app and also to test my hip. It didn't hurt while rowing, but did when I got up.
I also walked/ran for 12 minutes. Walking and slow running didn't hurt my hip either. That straight motion is OK. But I didn't want to push it.
I also did some upper body weights. If we're going to be canoeing ... and we hope to do that through autumn, I need stronger arms! Also I prefer the look of my arms when they're muscular and they certainly aren't that now!
I still need to set up my bicycles in our home gym. That's going to be a little bit more complicated so I left it for today.
Getting ready for February!!
We're not travelling anywhere in February, and I really want to do a bit more exercise.

2021 is the year I claim my life back. Starting over again at the age of 52 and before I think about getting back on the dating pony I need to loose weight - about 20 kilo's worth (sigh).
Anyway I am looking forward to the challenge.

Katla - Heard about the health workers stuck in the snow near Grant's Pass that gave vaccine to fellow travelers that were stuck also rather than let it expire and be wasted. Thought that was pretty cool.

Saturday is reading the.newspaper day. I don't write on Saturdays.
Had one of those nights when I wasn't awake, but not deeply asleep either. It's like my brain is stuck in a groove and just keeps on and on repeating itself. Not refreshing at all. Last night it was some nonsense about vaccination that made no sense at all.
Machka - I don't know if gluteal tendonopathy matches your symptoms. That's what I had but it's beginning to improve. If it hurts a lot when you stand on one leg and is worse in the morning , then that's it. Extremely painful and annoying. It usually doesn't affect function though. YouTube has some good videos.
Love to all. Glad the night is over and I can make DH a cup of tea.
