Less Alcohol - FEBRUARY 2021 - One Day At A Time

I really wanted a drink when I came home from work. , so substituted seltzer / cranberry instead. For the first time it didn’t really satisfy the craving. So, my husband made me an Old Fashioned and it was delicious. Really wanted a second one, but my husband said you don’t need it! Glad to have had his support because he knew I really wanted my weeknights to be AF. So, back to a wine glass of seltzer/cran.
Now the question is why did I want a drink so badly? I didn’t have a bad day at work, it was just a long time on my feet and they were achy. Still trying to figure this one out.5 -

Oh crap....my NOOK has a possessed auto spell check feature.
It was a Needham martini last week. Needham, like the coconut and chocolate candy confection.
Not sure if these are all the correct ingredients, if not it is close.
coconut rum
Godiva chocolate liqueur
RumChata
Chocolate syrup (room temperature), to garnish
Shredded coconut, to garnish

i could bathe in that. but it would be a waste decadent!4 -
thank you all who reached out. i very much appreciate your support and i'm glad to be here. hearing everyone's stories is helping. that said - my husband ordered some things online that we will pick up tomorrow. mine is an italian pinot grigio. and that is all for another month *crossing fingers* he'll have beer which i'm not fond of so there's no worries of me getting into THAT
happy friday to you all - and enjoy your weekend!6 -
I had wine last night, it was planned, but supposed to be 2 and I had 3.
Nursing a headache now, my headache is always over my left eye and forehead up to the top of my head.
Does anyone else get a headache in a certain spot after drinking?

My goal was to do a dry February. I did unfortunately slip up for game day; however, I felt TERRIBLE and was reminded (yet again) that drinking really doesn't even make me feel good anymore. I feel fairly confident that the rest of this month will be spent DRY! Looking forward to the support on this thread8

I was AF again last night and it was as difficult as I anticipated. This weekend will be the challenge as we always always always have drunk on Fri-Sat and most times Sunday night, however we chose to have our 1 time per week drink on Tuesday...fingers, toes and will power crossed.
I have been using diet tonic water and a few drops of bitters (thank you @MissMay in my 'whiskey' glass. With the bite of the tonic water and bitters I fool my head into looking at the 'drink' and feel content.
The stories here are so amazing and inspirational. I have no earth shattering revelations, which I am ok with. I am just so thankful to have found this support group who are kind, non-judgemental, and can relate to the everyday, hour and minute struggle. You all offer unconditional support. Again for the 100th time, thank you8 -

I used to get a similar headache if I drank red wine, even a litte bit, but pain was behind my eye. I think it's the sulfites. Doesn't happen when I drink Italian whites, or when I stop drinking. Feel better6 -
Almost done with my "mindfulness/motivation" workbook. This weekend my task is to replace any negative thought that pops up with a positive one immediately. I am supposed to record this after. This list is going to be LONG! I suppose I have to re-train my brain and this is the start.
Another workbook exercise is recording the number of cravings, including time, place and duration.
I will predict 20 negative thoughts and 4 craving episodes. Will be interesting to know Monday in reality what that frequency is...

Staying AF. Only slipped up once this month. It's snowing and cold here and Portland is a mess. I don't mind because I can stay home, but hate that Husband has to drive in it. Oddly the stress is not making me want to drink. So I'm just stuck stressing.7

TGIF 2 glasses of wine this evening. Hope everyone is hanging in there this weekend with your own personal goals.6

I have become intolerant to wine also (I only ever drank red, I don't like white). I didn't drink it often, but enjoyed a nice glass of Chianti with Italian, a robust merlot with steak etc. It only started to bother me in February of 2020 I had some over Christmas 2019 and into NYE and it didn't make me sick. It took me a little while to pinpoint that it was the wine, since other booze does not bother me like that. it took me 4 times to figure out the culprit. The final time I had 3 ounces and was sick the whole next day.
Why all of a sudden I have no idea.6 -
Hi
I originally decided to drink less to lose weight.
I have been on this thread since Nov 28.18
Thank you to @MissMay for keeping us going.
I am going to post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
I will be keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month. It is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me. So far I have been able to keep with it. One month I raised the goal and failed miserably, so I learned from that. I think this is my sweet spot.
Friday Feb 12 - AF - I stayed in the house almost all day, it is cold here for another day or two. I have a half of a can of Spicy Caesar wrapped up in the fridge from the other day that was staring at me, I resisted.
Rolling total 8AF days out of 12 days6 -
@globalhiker That is great that you are finishing up the workbook. I did find the pdf and plan to start on it this next week.7

Today will be day 13 AF, day 5 AF for husband. I can tell my healing process is working since I slept until 4am today instead of 2 am.
@lmlmrn I actually used some simple "tips" from the workbook already!
The other day I was driving and stopped a red light and felt a really strong craving attack. My mind said: "oh no, you need to do what the book says".
I took a deep breathe or two then focused on the feeling and tried to identify where in my body it was coming from. It was my heart.
I told myself I needed to observe that feeling calmly as an outsider and then the thought came to me that it wasn't a craving, but just anxiety.
My body is still trying to recalibrate itself and likely it's just a odd surge of adrenaline or cortisol and nothing more.
What happened just prior to cause this? Well, I just came from one store that was out of the detergent I needed so I was enroute to store #2 to find it and I was irritated and annoyed over having to do this.
The light turned GREEN and off I went and not even a few seconds later, that anxious feeling disappeared!!!
It's all a MIND GAME from here on end. I think if we master the techniques, then yes we can control our emotions and irrational thoughts that don't serve us.

have you done any sort of meditation? i'm finding that when i'm feeling ill at ease or stuck in my emotional ridiculous head, sometimes *not as much as i'd like mind you* i can listen to something to make me realize what i'm going through is not permanent but temporal. it does help7 -
Well husband is stuck at work. I'm stuck at home. I don't think I could get out of my driveway if I needed to.
Happily staying AF, nothing in the house. I plan to do my nails today. Now to pick a color 🤔9 -
I am happy to say I made it through Friday night AF....yeah me. Today will be another challenge since we are basically snowed in which causes anxiety for me. I live far enough in suburbia to not get any plow work done. If we are able to limp the mile (and uphills, no way around one I live, pardon the pun, in the bottom of a cereal bowl) we will be fine. But is it worth it to go out and buy alcohol? most likely not so another AF day/night added to my total.
This would be a great day then to paint and start on my reading the addiction recovery skills workbook9 -
i'm sipping. not wolfing.7

@lisamestiza2021 meditation is actually not something I don't practice routinely, but I should check out Headspace etc. Thanks!4
-
Still snowed in. Did my nails, they are way outside my comfort zone, but husband requested this color 😳.
Really wanting a drink tonight. My mother is driving me nuts (she lives with me)
Feeling blah. Trying to channel my energy into cleaning the house.11 -

What is the link?
I have only tried a couple of times. Otherwise my meditation is being out in the forest, playing in my garden, or observing my coffee cream hit my coffee in the mornings...I always do that one without fail.
