Less Alcohol - FEBRUARY 2021 - One Day At A Time

Hi
I originally decided to drink less to lose weight.
I have been on this thread since Nov 28.18
Thank you to @MissMay for keeping us going.
I am going to post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
I will be keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month. It is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me. So far I have been able to keep with it. One month I raised the goal and failed miserably, so I learned from that. I think this is my sweet spot.
Monday Feb 01 - AF - Had to at least start the month with an AF day to set the tone for myself.
Tuesday Feb 02 - Drinks. I used to always designate Tuesdays as my "drinks" day, because it is a very long work day paying very little. I worked to get away from that behaviour and was successful many times. My willpower didn't hold out tonight. I want to only have drinks NOT to relieve stress. I just stumbled a little.
Wednesday Feb 03 - AF - Planned AF
Thursday Feb 04 - AF - Because I needed 2 in a row. Planned drinks with my bubble friend tomorrow, but we'll see.
Friday Feb 05 - Drinks
Saturday Feb 06 - AF - Going to get at least 2 in a row or more.
Sunday - Drinks - Superbowl naughty food and drinks.
Rolling total 4AF days out of 7 days5 -
After church and a VERY snowy ride home, hubby and I opened some Prosecco and made a nice brunch of Avocado toast with some salmon and a poached egg on top. Yum! Drank 3 glasses and took an amazing nap after reading my book. What a nice way spend a quiet, snowy day, even though it’s more than I normally drink. Those three glasses count as 2.5 drinks on my app.
AF for the super bowl because I drank at brunch. I just cooked dinner like normal, so no tempting high calorie snacks.

That was a LOT of science about the effects of alcohol on weight loss & metabolism. Most of it was over my head. My simple brain is fine with the basic concept that alcohol slows down weight loss & calorie absorption on top of adding empty calories. That will be motivating enough for me. But I do appreciate that there is genuine science under there.
Yes, agreed.
When I drink alcohol I don't lose weight but more usually I gain weight under calorie goal or not.
When I don't drink alcohol I lose weight or I I lose weight. I only lose weight when I don't drink alcohol.
Motivation enough for me based on 2+ years of tracking myself.
I DO love the science explanation though : - )

@Womona how did you know I was Paisley fan? That's one of my favorite songs.
Update:
I had a heart to heart with my Sister about my new direction with drinking. I'm trying to reassure her that we do not have to follow down our Mom's drinking road. She had been wanting to cut back also and our talk put her in a better frame of mind to do something about it.
My GF and I are having my Sister and my BIL over tonight to watch the game. Focusing on fixing fun foods to eat verses alcohol to suck down. There will be beer, nothing like in the past.
I make a mean homemade chili sauce. My specially for the game will be foot long chili/cheese dogs.
GO CHIEFS🏈🌭
It’s amazing how we find others who are also interested in cutting down on alcohol. Just takes sharing our thoughts, and our peeps come out of the woodwork! Very glad to hear your sister is on board, and how it’s all about the food and fun, and not getting wasted. Your chili sounds delicious!
The first time I heard the lyrics to that song, I was in the car with my young son. “When you see a deer you see Bambi, I see antlers up on the wall”... had us dying! We laughed so hard. We still laugh at that song. Nice memory!4 -

Hope everyone has a great Sunday whatever your plans may be.
I am going walking, and maybe some cycling today as it is sunny and cool enough in the low 70's.
Oh how I would love to have a 70 degree day. Watching the snow come down right now at fast rate until 10:00PM, going to be snowed in.
Stay warm and safe @MissMay!
I would swap with you if I could. I am making the most of the outdoors here at this time of year because in a few months, when the heat kicks in, I will be stuck indoors for months.
We ended up going to the cinema after our walk, to see 'Supernova' - it was so good but so sad. I was still in tears halfway home when we stopped at a store so I went in wearing sunglasses, trying to look cool and not weepy
February
2/1 - AF
2/2 - AF
2/3 - AF
2/4 - AF
2/5 - 3 wine
2/6 - 1 wine
2/7 - AF5 -
@Lilylady3k that is a sweet story about you meeting your husband at a wine and cheese party and now that is how you will celebrate your 40 year anniversary of that event.
The menu looks incredible.

@Fit_Happens_2021 a little snowy pic for you. This was taken mid-storm. My workout today will consist of massive shoveling.

Another superbowl come and gone. At least I know my shut eye moment second quarter was due to many roasted brussel sprouts and grilled bacon wrapped shrimp and not alcohol.
HAPPY MONDAY!!9 -
Happy Monday!!! 7 days AF done and I am still alive. Plus I woke up with a flat tummy too! No drinking bonus!
Congrats @lisamestiza2021 and @CryingBlue on hitting 17 days. I am following you guys so keep it up please
@Lilylady3k I want to crash your party, your menu looks so inviting......
I think I will feel energized enough today to go out for a run and maybe a very short bodypump session.
@MissMay my triceps need it! Hands down my most hated exercise is triceps pushups but when I do them and I mean to failure which doesn't take long and repeat a few times after some other exercises, my arms firm up solid the next day. 20g protein 4x a day I need to firm up, for my body weight and age. If I do less, nothing happens!7 -
@chocolate_owl I hope you are recovering well and starting to feel better! Have you hit the Oregon vineyards for quality pinor noir? I hit most in Willamette Valley. Iris Vineyards, Reserve 2016 or 2014. I'm having a fantasy moment. Drinking wine outdoors in Oregon on a nice day at a vineyard, wow. The flavor and freshness is not the same in a bottle.
Where is your "TED wall"? I don't know what this is, forgive me...

@CMB44512 you are going down the right path with helping to motivate family to join you in drinking less. With your mother, keep at it but in a very gentle way. I am sure you've checked online into tips on how to approach someone about their drinking (ie: not when they are under the influence, or in a foul mood, and using a gentle tone not conveying disapproval, etc). Using a direct tone usually backfires.
Backing off a bit then meeting up with her and not saying anything about her drinking may be one idea (it's hard). Kind of re-establish a line of communication that is friendly and approachable. Then maybe next time let her know what is up with you, that you feel happier etc having cut back a bit on drinking and it was easy, etc. It's all about baby steps...and going slow.
In her mind, she may have convinced herself she is normal and believes it. Take me for example, I though everybody drinks. I don't get into trouble and I don't get drunk, I can function great and look totally fine. The alcohol brain is in a denial state. Then there is also fear (my husband has this)....fear of how bad that first week of not drinking will be (ie: you could die he says) ...or fear he'd lose out on the fun and relaxing feeling or experience anxiety.
Sending positive thoughts your way......and condolences about the Chiefs, I was rooting for them too!6 -
hello to all the wonderfuls here
well got through the superbowl....actually tuned it out when the score was really out of whack. But did enjoy a few drinks. Today is a new day.
DH and I were talking last night and I again said I really need help on cutting back. So now we have made another pack.....only have one day a week to drink and we both have to agree on which day. This is doable and I know he will help me gently stick to it. I really do want to get through this month with 20 AF days, that would be two more than last month.10 -
DH opened one of my favorite Albariño wines this evening but it is Monday. So I'm AF.
Feb accountability: 5/8 days AF
Alcohol: 3 days (6 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month

Went to the cinema again today - it was one of those that have waiter service and a wine list.
Proud to say I did NOT have any wine
We saw 'Nomadland' with Frances McDormand.8 -
Hard fail here today. Chugged 3 beers, only 3 in the house and lied to my husband about it. I feel like poop for what I did behind his back. I was at 18 AF days in a row. Starting over tomorrow 😔

Love her!
Also love a nice menu watching movies. I’ve only found one theatre that does this.6 -

We’ve all stumbled. The more important thing is to discern what made you chug the 3 beers, and what made you lie about it. Pondering those ponderables will help you for next time.
Big hug!7 -
What was supposed to be an easy quiet day at work was anything but! Wanted a drink around 5:30 but the feeling passed - plus still working! Got home late and stayed AF. Happy about that!9

Happy Tuesday Everyone!
I'm now 3xAF days for February. Will go again tonight as I am aiming for 4 days this week. I don't have any plans for drinks weekdays this week.
I have to say I was tempted last night after finishing the day with a 3.5hr web meeting but I had a cup of tea instead LOL8 -

Start overs are perfectly fine. We are the LESS alcohol group. You had 18 days of NO alcohol. That counts for a big victory. Agree with the comment think about what could have triggered it. What is your day normally like? Was it work related? Are you by yourself all day?
New day for you.😊

@globalhiker is that bodypump you do the one by Les Mills?
This tricep workout is a bonus workout within this DVD program, never would have thought it was going to be such a killer. It's not like I don't box and kick box and lift weights as a normal routine in my life. The quickness of each set I believe was the problem. I can lift heavy at a much slower speed without a problem.
Darn this skin that looses elasticity.
And then I just had to come across this bit of information:
Be mindful of your sugar intake too: excessive amounts can age skin prematurely as sugar in the bloodstream forms harmful molecules (known as AGEs: advanced glycation end products) which attack collagen and elastin.6 -

Planned next drink is 1 glass of champagne at a set 6 course dinner on Valentines Day.

@Stockholm_Andy that's why it's one day at a time. Good for you for getting back on the AF wagon. 1-2 days off doesn't mean you can't start again. Every day of not drinking or drinking less is better than what we were doing before.
Thanks Trish, I'm completely onboard with one day at a time this time around. I'm not trying to go dry but I am aiming for more days AF than drinking.
Well done on the weight loss BTW!

Today will be AF day 9.
Physically I feel great. But the next few weeks will present wild unexpected cravings out of the blue. That's what happened last time. To prep, I went to a Total Wine store that sells individual non-alcoholic beers and bought a bunch of different ones to have on hand "in case of emergency".
So far the best ones for me is "Moritz 0,0" (I add about a third of a lime to it to make it taste like a Corona)
Comments on others:
Upside Dawn from Athletic Brewing (citrusy, but this one gave me bloating so I won't repeat).
The Run Wild version is supposedly ranked best in taste tests, but it's very IPA-ish and I don't like that bitterness.
Buckner from Holland I did not like but my beer expert husband thought it was the more beer-like one of the bunch.
@MissMay for Bodypump, I do Youtube - different ones from Lazuria Zaphet. It's great, she has many series of varying lengths. She recently re-named many of her series as "body strength" since I think Les Mills didn't want her copying them. I like her sound quality better than Les Mills on youtube (I find their series does incessant talking which is distracting) and her music selection is good. My barbell set I bought online from MOSSA, only $125 and it's gym quality; bench from Walmart $50.

Forgot: Clausthauler grapefruit non-alcoholic is super delicious and a repeat buy for me. But it's like a wine cooler, not beer-like at all. If you like citrus and especially pink grapefruit, this may be a good one. Downside, 95 calories but I found one to be very filling, so having one when craving that taste is not bad.
Also, correction from my prior post: it's "Buckler" and not Buckner.4 -

Watched news this evening and really wanted a glass of the bottle of wine DH opened. But it is Tuesday and not a good enough excuse. So AF again.8

@Lilylady3k I was in a similar position last night when my wife opened a bottle of wine. She even got out a glass for me and asked if I wanted to taste, as it was one we haven't tried before. I declined. But for the rest of the night I had a little nagging demon in my head thinking about a drink. Even more so when she poured herself a whisky while we watched TV.
However, I just focused on my goals and made some tea. I'm so rock&roll
4 x AF in February
