I love to grow iris in my yard. There may have been a few here when we moved in. Since then, I have acquired more when neighbours have thinned theirs and put a box of bulbs at the curb for anyone to take. Last year my dog walking friend and my husband each bought me iris bulbs as gifts. Those are the black and two tone ones that I posted. Last week in a fit of extravagance, I ordered seven more bulbs to plant next fall. Each is different--blue, black and red, black, red, purple and white. All have interesting names.
Jake has gone to get Bessie after her dental appointment. Sasha and Bernie have been nervous all day with her gone.

Iris have a very special place in my heart- My great grandmother used to raise/breed iris. After she passed away, my cousin and his wife did even more with the iris-going to many shows world wide. He has passed but his wife is still growing/breeding/showing. ( I guess that is what you call it- hybridizing is more like it I think)
here is a link about them. https://wiki.irises.org/Main/Bio/HybridizerCaddAnnaDavid
I used to love to walk through Grandma Bee's iris garden- the colors and ohhhh the smells of them

Hi Gals,
Janet – missed you!
Rebecca – great pics !!!
Jodi – welcome
Pip – I am glad you like the heat, it is not something I have ever adjusted to - Does Kirby enjoy it as well?
Yes go for the Chair!!!
Smiles, Kim in Northern California
He doesn’t enjoy the major heat like I do, I tolerate the AC during the 3 digit weather. I put a sweater on when inside, not a fan of ac much, but let him put it on for his and Yogi’s sake.1 -
Welcome to all the newcomers here!
As a younger poster (54), a special welcome to those who are at the younger end of the age range.
This is a fast-moving thread, so don't feel like you have to read everything. Just jump into conversations when you feel like it.

Barbie - Irises do well here. The front gardens look great this time of year. All colours and types. I look forward to the season. I adore the big Van Gogh type ones as they remind me of Provence. One year we hired a house down near Arles in May and our garden had a cypress and masses of irises, just like his pictures! One day a huge hoopoe landed on the patio.
At the moment the roads on my run to the seafront and back are full of the scent of roses, which are not naturally abundant locally, but, the ones that the careful owners cherish and nurture are in full, glorious bloom and wafting out their scent as I pass by. Sometimes I just can't resist stopping for a sniff! There is a pink one on my direct route that is ...... woouuff!!
This afternoon is our first experiment in cleaning the house together. It is in our diaries for after lunch.
I have a Zoom with my girlfriends at 5 pm, which is later than usual because one of them has to get back from a trip to London. We eat at 6pm, so DH will have to put the tray of Mediterranean vegetables in the oven. I will be finished in time to add the feta and tomatoes. Friday night is wine night.

For the newcomers and those of us who have been here a while ... what is your favourite sport or exercise.

It was nice spending some time this afternoon ... this chilly but sunny afternoon ... doing that rather than being on my computer.

June is shaping up to be a busy month
• Pilates - about once a week.
• Audax meetings - that's the long distance cycling club I'm a part of.
• Designing another 50 km route for Audax. This one needs to be in southern Tasmania which is challenging.
• Cycle a 50 km route. Plus shorter rides.
• Run at least one 5 km distance.
• Plant bulbs. I've got to get these things in or it will be spring with no flowers!
• All-day work meeting tomorrow.
• A week off next week - some rest time, I hope! And cycling. I booked this week off to ward off the darkness.
• Back to school! I'm taking a 5 week course called 'Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)' . It's all online and work-at-our-own-pace with no formal assignments, exams, etc.
• Bees! My husband and I are booked for a course to build a Warre Hive at the end of June.
• Plus, of course, my 2021 To Do List: getting organise, simplifying, etc. I've got 4 projects on the go right now and I "switch-task" between them.
That's all in addition to work and caring for my husband.
EDIT: Also ... the stair climbing challenge at work is to reach the height of Mount Ossa, the tallest mountain in Tasmania (1617 metres = 450 floors * 20 stairs/floor).
It is about noon on June 1 and I've done 20 floors so far. I've got a way to go.
Machka in Oz
Attended first Pilates class of June.
Ran Audax Tasmania AGM.
Planted bulbs. Ran out. That's OK. Stores don't have bulbs anymore.
Attended the all day meeting at work on Wednesday.
Started week off!
Started climbing stairs toward the elevation of Mount Ossa. I've done 90 of the 450 flights.

I see Barbara (auntibk) has started working her way through Joyful June 2021.
June 2021: Daily actions to help you appreciate the little things and find more joy.
"This month's theme is all about finding the joy in life, even when things are difficult. Research has shown that experiencing positive emotions in a 3-to-1 ratio with negative ones leads to a tipping point beyond which we naturally become more resilient to adversity. So let's train our brains to find the joy."
https://www.actionforhappiness.org/joyful-june
Funny that Wednesday's was: "Say positive things in your conversations with others" ... I struggled a bit but I did make a point to say something positive about the 7.5 hour planning meeting: It was nice to meet people in my area but who work elsewhere. It was the first time I had met some of these people.
Today's is "Take a photo of something that brings you joy and share it".
So here he is ... when he was a little bit younger.

Always love pictures of Rhody--he's like a tiny little black hole - all the light is contained within that black. Happened to have Egg on my lap when I saw this earlier and nearly spit out my coffee.

Going to pick up Homer in a bit and then bring him back here..2 -
Down 2.2 lbs! Yay! This fat2fit team challenge is really helping. As is the realization that I have a spare tire now, depending on how I stand. Not the best attribute for on-line dating. And not how I want to be. So I am working on it.
Too much chance of rain for the bike today. But there's still walking in the basement. I will try not to be a total slug.

Debbie, Thank you for sharing about the different iris. There are so many amazing ones. It wouldn't be hard for me to become the "crazy iris lady" and fill my yard with them.
Bessie came through her dental appointment well except that she had teeth extracted so she has pain meds and has to stay with soft foods for two weeks. Jake is going to the store right now to buy a bag of soft dog treats.
I love being retired. I walked into work one day and knew that I was ready. I could have increased my retirement income if I had worked two more years, I haven't regretted my decision. I gave my all to my job and now I'm doing other things.

Sooooo, I'm going to share a photo of something that gives me pleasure.
My irises.
I bring them out at the end of May every year and put them back into storage in July. Yes, they are fake!
Another thing that once gave me pleasure is this theatre, The Capitol Theatre. It's where my mum appeared in nearly every musical ever written, so that I know all the musicals before 1970! She was an amateur, and not a star, but she loved it. Now our singing group sings all the same songs!
This picture was taken well before the 60s when I was there, but I found it online today and it gave me quite a pang.
Our cleaning session went well, but we are both exhausted after an hour! We didn't manage the top floor, but everything else is done well enough for now. I will have to give the top floor a good clean before my brother comes to stay with his wife, so I reckoned it wasn't so important to do it today.
The other thing I did was get a digital version of the National Railcard for Senior Citizens. My friend has invited me to lunch in Portsmouth on Monday and my railcard ran out last June. Because of the pandemic I haven't renewed it as I haven't been on a train ! It's too late now to get a real one by post by Monday (you get a third off the price of a ticket), but I found they do an app with a digital version. It was quite a performance, but I managed it in the end. So I have it on my phone.
The good thing is, because of the reduced train service at the moment, the train is actually stopping at my very local tiny station about 7 mins walk away, and no changes. That makes a big difference because I haven't got to get to Hove Station, or change lines.

Hi Gals,
Heather – I had to look up Hoopoe, what an amazing looking bird, they don’t live on this side of the “pond”
Machka - Swimming is the one I love most almost never get to participate, but love it.
The last few days have been more busy than my usual busy, as a few months ago my handy housemate and I decided that he would do a “remodel “ of my guest bathroom - new vanity, toilet, flooring, baseboards and paint. I found a deal to buy from our local big box hardware store – on line, on a new credit card account, go and pick up (no delivery) and you get 22% off - I went for it! The tile came in broken, so the whole order when back and then redelivered – it took weeks! I picked a large format tile 18” square (I hate grout but wanted tile) a cream background with swirls of a warm tan and a cool grey, I figured that would go with anything. A white toilet and a white vanity and sink, the bathroom is 6’ wide by 7 feet long, not a lot of space. There is a tub/shower combo at one end that we did not change. Both my housemate and his girlfriend are good with color so I told them no wallpaper, no black, and no pink – but surprise me. They teased me without end! It was a crack up. So it is finished except baseboards. While they were doing all the work I made all the meals, and did the clean up.
I’ll go take some pictures and post them in a bit.

Her look reminded me of female named hurricanes! Hurricane Athena sounds like a pretty fierce storm! Looking up the reasons about male and female names, I understand they alternate. One year is starts with a female name, the next year a male name. If it doesn't amount to anything, it gets reused. If its a fairly major storm the name gets retired.

Yay! Lee (husband) wants to attend a Shakespeare festival in Beaverton, Oregon, (by Portland), next month the weekend of the 17th! So we'll stay at the hotel, a stones throw from middle son's, daughter in law and of course get some major Athena time! Maybe before or after that weekend, go to the coast. How exciting! Then in August when my family's reunion is, I will just take a bus down, but stay with son. I don't mind dog hair, and doggie kisses.💖. Husband is not a fan, so we stay at a hotel when we both go down.

I risked the rain and rode my bike. Made it! Only a few drops. So far, I ride two laps around the development where I live. Very little traffic and not much of a hill. Perfect for beginners like me. I feel it in my quads.

Happy Friday Ladies,
Checking in for accountability. Doing well with my food choices. Not doing strict IF, but trying to get all my calories in by 6pm in the evening as I know I am a nighttime snacker. That little change is a big one for me. Still need to find time to work in some regular exercise. I probably get around 6000 steps in everyday just in my day to day but would like to try for more. We got a heatwave coming to NY, ugh, supposed to have 3 days in the 90's starting tomorrow. Working all weekend anyway.
Have a wonderful Day Everyone!!
Susan in NY4 -
Annie: I would not choose to ride a horse on a day with possible lightening and thunder. If you are nervous about the weather, the horses are likely to be even more so. Good luck. Regarding Microsoft—my computer is OLD. When we bought it, we loaded it with Microsoft word. It is still working okay. I do not use any part of Microsoft other than word. Early on I used powerpoint for class instruction. I’ve been retired for a long while and haven’t used powerpoint since then. :flowerforyou:
Kelly: Welcome!
Terri: I love your poem.
Machka: Your winter travel option seems to be riding the bus. Is bus the schedule one that works for you?
Heather: I am delighted to hear that you love your life. That is a wonderful accomplishment and on-going. Congratulations!.
Beth near Buffalo: Five minutes on the bike is a good beginning. I imagine that as your knee improves you will be able to gradually add a few minutes. :flowerforyou:
Lisa: I am amazed that the VA pathologist was such a huge cheater. I’m glad he was caught and hope he gets to be a prisoner in federal prison for many years to come. :grumble:
Janetr: I suspect that the stationary bike is a huge improvement over a treadmill. Those treadmills deliver quite a pounding on the knees. I tried them for a bit and went right back to the stationary bike. No pounding!
Pip: the quilt is delightful and an excellent complement to the couch. :flowerforyou:
Heather: The iris are beautiful!!! :flowerforyou:
Kim: Congrats on your bathroom remodel!!
Yoga today. I’m looking forward to it. I plan to ride the exercise bike for a bit to get my legs warmed up and ready for yoga.

Zoomed my girlfriends. My difficult friend was .....difficult. Lots of stress over her French house. Basically, she can't go there because of covid, and she is putting up on the market. Brexit has killed it. Her husband is a tax exile and lives in Gibraltar, so it's all a mess.
We listened politely, but the problems are all of their own making.
My friend in Scotland wants us to visit up there, perhaps to Edinburgh. I am not keen yet. I would rather wait until restrictions etc are cleared. Luckily, my difficult friend had lots of complicated plans, so it's been put on the back burner.
I am more than happy to stay here in lovely Hove. No desire to go anywhere. I do have a day trip to Portsmouth on Monday - my furthest trip in 15 months. That does mean that I won't be turning up to the German club in the pub in the evening. Maybe the next time. I can only do one thing a day, and even that amount stresses me out. I love a quiet life.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx2 -
Barbie I love Iris too. I am staring at a light yellow bouquet. I got these from a friend years ago. They are looking happy in our yard too because the big tree behind us finally is gone. I pick the ones which flop over because the stems are not very strong. They get much more sun now. I am still waiting on those at son's house I got free two years ago. They did not bloom last year. This year I have buds. They are black, dark purple, or midnight blue. Excited to see what they will be. I may have planted them too deep when I planted them and it took a year for them to work there way up to where they are happy.
When I get a picture of the one in son's yard I will post both.6 -
Look what came through the door this afternoon.
Wonderful.
