6 miles today to open the month. The temp was GREAT for Phoenix but the humidity was EXTREMELY high. Had to adjust route on the fly as some areas I had planned to run were flooded.
6/174 (or 175, haven't decided if I should round up)5 -
9/1 – 6.22
9/2 – 4.01
10.23 of 75 miles
I was tired this morning and almost didn’t run until I walked outside and it was 62F, you have to run when it’s 62 out! Ran out of time to go any longer, I walked the first mile or so with my friend who I haven’t had a chance to have a good chat with in a while.
@shanaber how in the world can you run an HM in a mask in CA? That’s insane. Great job on the HM!!
My friend was telling me today her daughter’s XC meet is no spectators, it’s on the campus of Univ of Arkansas, where this weekend is their home football game with a no mask policy and full stands. What the heck, so figure that one out. I’m going to see Makayla and attend a game, it mask encouraged.
@kgirlhart glad the hip was feeling better
Thanks for everyone answering my ritual question, I have none, zero none. Ha ha
@polskagirl01 that looks like shoe sucking mud
@quilteryoyo push the 12 miles out to another time and don’t worry about it. Your mileage doesn’t know if it’s Saturday or Tuesday, you’ll be fine. I do agree with @martaindale and others if you can do 11 you can do 13. When I did my first HM my longest official run was 10 miles, Skip full marathon her longest was 22 miles. Honestly at this point, the hay is in the barn and you’ll do great.
I hope everyone is safe with all the flooding and tornadoes
Nice pictures @Teresa502
@Scott6255 sorry for the shins, shoes? Ramping up mileage? Adding downhills?
@julieannegannon sorry about the hip, if it bothers you for more than a few days you might want to make sure you didn’t do damage on your fall. I had hip pain about 3 or so years ago and found out I have a torn labrum nerve in my hip and a born spur. I did a few weeks of PT for the labrum tear and when it starts to talk to me I stretch it better.

@Teresa502 When I read your first paragraph then opened the image I was expecting a dog! I went back and re-read because I thought I missed something, like the cow followed you on your run. That would be an interesting running buddy!2 -

Lol - I guess I should have mentioned my other sights along the way! :-)3 -
@martaindale Skip's coach used to say that to her and it has just stuck.2

Thanks for all the well wishes 💓skippygirlsmom wrote: »@Scott6255 sorry for the shins, shoes? Ramping up mileage? Adding downhills?
Shoes: 2 pair in rotation. Both the same model I have been wearing years, and only a couple weeks/months old.
Mileage: Same weekly mileage for basically all this year (+/- 5 miles)
Downhills: Same basic 4 routes / week (except last weekend's run in Houston) That has some big up/down hills, but very short. Hmm, that MIGHT be something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The only other thing I can think of is yesterday was the first time in forever that I didn't pop an Advil before the run (I know, I know... terrible)
Thanks for making me think through it!!!
Hopefully tomorrows rest day will cure it 😁

Welcome new runners!
@rheddmobile sorry to hear about your race turning virtual. Your pre-race breakfast sounds DELICIOUS!
@juliet3455 good to hear from you! Not good to hear about your troubles. Sounds like you're making progress though, so keep it up! I'm coming back from over 6 months off running due to PF and it sucks. It sucks not running and it sucks being no where near the shape you used to be when you start back up. I hope you stick around or check in from time to time.
@skippygirlsmom just before covid hit I was trying a new pre-race ritual that I think I'll continue. I only tried it once and it worked, but I'm calling it a ritual because I plan on continuing to do it. I'm fairly regular in the morning but I have to wait 60 to 90 minutes after my morning coffee for things to get moving. That means if I have to get up a lot earlier than I want to get things done before going on a long run or a race. My last long race what I did was to set my alarm for an hour before I really wanted to get up, slam a can of cold press coffee, then quick go back to sleep before the caffeine hit. Not only did I wake up easier an hour later because of caffeine, but I was able to go soon after I got up. (TMI for most folks, but not for fellow runners!). I do have one clothing ritual for one race. There's a local 5K for homelessness that someone in my church coordinated. It's the only race which I've run every single year it's been in existence (5 years). Each time I run it, including the first year, I wear the shirt from the first year. I have no idea why, but I do. Unfortunately I found out they won't be having the race this year. My other pre-race ritual is to second guess everything I decided to wear that day. My pre-race breakfast, when I remember to buy them, are Thomas brand mini bagels in flavors like cinnamon raisin or s'mores. Good carb to fill me up before a race. I'll also take a shot of gel immediately before a long race starts to start replenishing glycogen as soon as possible.
@julieannegannon I have no advice but I do hope you get your hip sorted soon.
@shanaber the post race jacuzzi sounds divine.
@polskagirl01 that looks like quite a slop fest, I love it!
@quilteryoyo sorry to hear about all you're going through right now. Don't worry about commenting on everything. We know that life happens and it sounds like what you're going through is more important than commenting here. As far as your run, do what you can, don't sweat what you can't do, and just enjoy the race and all the work you've done for it.

@7lenny7 glad you figured out what helps get things moving. I tend to take the dogs out then sit and let gravity do it's thing LOL. Okay wait Thomas has mini bagel that are s'mores what!!!??? Too bad about the race, I hate when something that is done every year doesn't happen.3

Last nights race went very well. By that I mean I met my goal.
This was a 4.2 mile trail race in a local park, starting at 6:30pm. It's the first in a series of 4 races. I thought these races would be an excellent way to measure my progress in my running comeback. My goal: Run the entire race. I didn't care one bit about my time. I want to run it slow and steady and not taking walking breaks. That would be a heck of a feat since my longest stretch of nonstop running in my comeback has only been 1.5 miles. The night was relatively cool at 72F and dry, so I had a chance.
I got to the race an hour early, pick up my bib and my hoodie. The hoodie is included if you sign up for all 4 races. $80 for four races with post race beer, snacks, raffle prizes, and a hoodie. Great deal! I love mid-week evening races too, so even better. Anyway, the hoodie fit perfectly so I was happy about that. I straddle between L and XL and never know what to order. I guessed right this time.
Next was my warmup. Normally I run for a warm up but I figured my entire race was going to be slow enough to count as a warm up so I walked about a mile for my warm up. After that I found a friend of mine and chatted with him and his group so long that we almost missed the start.
The race started and I just ignored everyone else and ran at my own, slow pace. I was consciously trying to minimize pace to increase the odds that I could actually run the whole course. I did great for a little over a mile, then I came to the first hill. Oh crap...my first hill. I had forgotten about hills. I ran up half of it, but then allowed myself to walk the bigger hills. I was satisfied with that concession to my original goal.
I never looked back but I had a sense there were not many behind me. Every so often someone would pass me, and I don't recall passing anyone else, at least not for long. There was one older gal (I say older gal, but she was probably my age) who was as slow as I was, but she was running every single hill. She was determined to run the whole thing no matter how slow she had to go, and she did. She was such a happy person. Greeting everyone who passed whether they were in the race or not, and chatting with other racers around her. She got ahead of me about 2 miles into the race but around 3 miles in I caught up to her. She was very supportive of my progress and it made me chuckle. She told me she was trying to PR the race and she was thrilled that she was 2 minutes ahead of her old PR. I felt like I could have passed her but decided I didn't want to. I don't think she would have cared, but for whatever reason, I wanted her to finish before me. It turns out it didn't matter because in the last half mile she pulled away from me. After I finished I gave her a fist bump and told her I was impressed how she attacked the course and she just beamed. I hope she's there at the next race.
After the race I hung around for the raffle, drank a beer and head home, happy with the results.14 -

Limited edition, unfortunately, but I keep hoping to find them again.1 -
Everything about that race report seems just about perfect @7lenny7 Congrats! Also, I really like the pre-morning coffee idea.4
-
Great race @7lenny7! That's awesome that you were able to go from a 1.5mi training run to 4.2mi. And that was very considerate of you to let that lady cross the finish before you 👏
Hang in there @quilteryoyo! We're all thinking about you and know you can do it.2 -
Well done, @7lenny7 .
@skippygirlsmom I don't know if this constitutes a pre-race ritual, but I don't do ANYTHING different from what I do for every run I run. The less I have to think about, the more comfortable I am.5 -
@Scott6255 So sorry your run was so miserable. I hope the shin pain is temporary.
Thanks @martaindale . Glad you had a nice, earlier than normal, run. Hahaha about your daughter.
@swenson19d Hang in there. That scale will move eventually. They just have a lot of friction to begin with.
Thanks @WhatMeRunning ! You are doing great with your walking.
@Teresa502 Love your pictures. Great run! It felt great out here this morning too.
@skippygirlsmom Thanks for the encouragement. I love "Honestly at this point, the hay is in the barn and you’ll do great." Glad you had nice temps and a good run this morning.
Thanks @7lenny7 ! It sounds like you had a great race. I agree that walking the big hills is an ok concession. I love that you didn't pass that lady and complimented her so. I know I'm emotional right now, but your kindness made me smile and shed some happy tears.
Thanks for the thoughts and support everyone. I actually found out today that the daycare IS closed on Monday. I didn't think it would be - don't think it was last Labor Day. Anyway, that is a possible opportunity to run my 12 miles. If I don't, I think I'll just not worry about it.
This isn't a question exactly, but I want to make a new playlist to listen to during my HM. I would love to know what your favorite running songs are so I can include them. Then it would be like you were all running with me, instead of me running alone. Remember, it's going to take me around 3 hours, so I'll need plenty of songs.6 -
I think I'll follow @WhatMeRunning and put my tally of runs/walks in the spoiler. I still haven't sat down and figured out a goal for this month. For now, I'm just trying to follow the plan as best I can and then cut back some and regroup after the 18th, HM.
I got up early this morning to get my run in. Wouldn't you know, it was too foggy to safely run on the road, so I wound up waiting an hour before heading out. It was great weather, almost chilly at 64°F. (Garmin says it was 70F. Silly Garmin.) Today was a Mixed Interval Run. It was 5 min in Zone 1, 5 min in Zone 2, then a ladder of Zones 5/4/3/4/5 for 1/3/5/3/1 minutes with 2 minutes recovery after each, except the last one which was 5 minutes in Zone 1. I wound up walking all of the recovery minutes - ran the last 4 min. I didn't get into the proper HR zones, but ran by effort. I was pleased with my times. Zone 5 efforts were 7:51 and 8:57 min/mile, Zone 4 were both 9:33 min/mile, and Zone 3 was 11:28 min/mile. Overall, I ran 3 miles at an average pace of 12:05 min/mile. Not bad considering I walked more than 10 minutes of that.1 Sept - 0.00 Run 1.0 Walked - Driveway laps
2 Sept - 3.00 Run 1.0 Walked - Mixed Intervals

Today was snake day on the trails! We saw not one but two large black snakes cross the trail right in front of us. Large black snakes near the Wolf River can be anything from harmless water snakes to venomous water moccasins but I think these were just rat snakes. Still unsettling! I actually had to slam on the brakes to avoid stepping on the first one.
We also saw a whole bunch of bunnies and butterflies.
The weather has turned nicer, it’s good weather for walking now but still too hot (90) to really enjoy running. So we did a lot of walking, 10k total, about half running. Now that my race has gone virtual I’m finding it difficult to motivate myself to suffer much.6 -
9-1 7k easy
9-2 rest
9-3 4k slow
September Total: 11k
September Goal: 150k
Sunny, low 50s F, and no wind today.
For the entertainment of my golfing partners yesterday, I performed a professional quality face plant while running across a bridge pushing my golf clubs. No serious damage -- just some road rash, a bruised chest, and a bruised right thigh. By the time I got to kilometer 2 today, both legs were hurting about equally, so I didn't push it (even though it was a gorgeous running day).
As that noted philosopher Ernest once said, "You can't fix stupid."
@quilteryoyo You know I'm a fan of 50s and 60s music, but I don't know if that would work for a half.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

@rheddmobile Wow. Two snakes! It's scary when you almost step on one. Glad you also saw butterflies and bunnies and that the temperatures are a bit better. It was 52°F here this morning.
@Tramboman I'm glad you weren't hurt worse. I'm sure I could find something from the 50s and 60s that would work. It doesn't have to be real energetic. My current playlists aren't. They just give me something to distract me from thinking about how far I still have to go.

Congrats on a well-managed race @7lenny7 - great race report!
@Tramboman - Sorry about the fall. Glad nothing broken but I'm sure you will feel the soreness for a couple of days.
Heading out for vacation today. Bummed that I didn't get a run in before work in these glorious 52F temps but too much last minute packing and chores to get done - see ya'll in a few days!5 -
@7lenny7 Sounds like a great return to racing! I love a trail race. The people are always just the nicest!
@quilteryoyo Yay, your schedule opened up! Hopefully that gives you a little wiggle room to get your runs and your life stuff done.
@Tramboman Hope you’re not too sore after that fall.
Starting to see some people getting cooler temps. Those haven’t moved this way yet. By September I am full-on dreaming of fall!2 -
Sept totals: 7.2/70 miles
9/2: 3.1 miles
9/3: 4.1 miles
Went out just a little bit later this morning at about 8 AM. I decided to run my neighborhood trail because it is still shady that time of morning. Overall, it was a nice run though I can definitely tell the difference in the temperature between 630-7 am start and an 8 am start. I kept the pace pretty easy but my heart rate was much higher. Even when my effort feels low the higher the temperature goes the higher my heart rate goes. I’m still trying to get more miles in a lower heart rate zone but I’m just not sure there’s much more I can do until the weather improves.
I can’t remember if I told you guys about getting stung by a scorpion in our hill country house. Since then we have found another couple of small scorpions in the house on subsequent trips. My husband is there now and getting pest control set up. The pest control guy told us that our house is very well sealed if we have only had three in the house over the past month. There are people whose houses he treats that come home to over a dozen in their house each day. He said it is scorpion season and this is the worst it should be. That made me feel a little bit better knowing that there should be fewer of them in the house moving forward.
Fun fact, or maybe creepy fact, scorpions glow under black light. So we walk the house at night with a black light flashlight to make sure there are none in the house before we go to sleep. After hearing about the number of scorpions other people are getting in their house I told my husband that our yard probably glows under a black light. We should never look. I think this is a case where ignorance is definitely bliss!8 -
5 miles this morning. Only 80° but super humid again.

@quilteryoyo My musical tastes are... eclectic. I listen to pop punk & rap when I run. Top running song/rap us Lose Yourself by Eminem or Dirrty by Christina.5 -

I hear you about the black snakes @rheddmobile I've encountered quite a few this year too. Since I run near streams I always have to assume it's a water moccasin even though it's probably just a harmless thing.
@Tramboman that also sounds like a case of not enough fishing! 😲 Have you been to the lake for PT?
Fantastic intervals @johnisrunning
I was a little envious about your lovely hilly location @martaindale until the latest scorpion report. Not so much now. Hope you don't get any more stings!3 -

@martaindale yikes! I can deal with snakes, spiders, and other manner of creepy crawlies just fine, but I'm not sure I could deal with scorpions. How exactly does one treat for scorpions in a house? Is it some sort of poison? What happens when you get stung, other than cursing and yelling? Two things we don't have to deal with in Minnesota are scorpions and venomous snakes. We do have rattlesnakes in the SE corner of the state but human encounters are very rare so I consider them nonexistent.

Not gonna lie, the scorpions are the worst thing about the hill country. I knew they existed there but I had never encountered one since they are hidden under rocks and are just so small that you aren’t likely to notice them on a hike unless they are right in the path. We are headed out there for the holiday weekend and I’ll be getting a couple of runs in on those hills. I am looking forward to exploring the area a bit more.@martaindale yikes! You plug every entry point. The doors and windows need to be well sealed - ours are. The previous owner put little pieces of screen mesh into the weep holes around the house and sealed off all the cracks around pipes going into the house. One of my first projects was to fill in the holes at the bottom edges of the garage doors where the trim doesn’t quite meet the floor. Pest control can treat the outside of the house. The prior owner used this all-natural pest control and I appreciate his interest in not using chemicals, but I do not want a single scorpion in my house so we went with the more traditional poison route.
We have bark scorpions (pic in the spoiler) and they are very small. The sting hurts like crazy then the area stings and is numb at the same time for about 24 hours. It is a weird sensation, but unless you have an allergy there isn’t much to do but a little ice and maybe some Benadryl and lots of yelling/cursing. We also have rattlesnakes but they at least warn you they are around!
You would never catch me holding one of these dead or alive, but this shows the size scale better.4 -
Im stalling getting stuff done...
Here's some scorpions dancing from back in the day when I was active2 -
@quilteryoyo asked about songs from your running playlist. That reminded me of something I did for my first marathon. I knew in the later part of the race it was going to be tough mentally and I came up with a way for an emotional boost. I asked my wife and three kids to each pick three songs to add to my running list. I didn't give them any other criteria. I then created a separate playlist with those 12 songs. During the race, when I was in pain and thought about slowing down or even walking, I switched to that playlist in shuffle mode. Each song made me think of person who suggested and gave me a huge burst of mental energy, enough to push through the pain. I keep that playlist and during long races I'll always pull it up and end up so grateful to have them in my life. If you do this, you might get some really crazy songs, like this one from my youngest...it always makes me laugh!
Anyway I've looked through my running playlists (about 150 songs) and picked a few which I doubt anyone else will mention. Some might call some of them weird. The links are all in Google Music.- Danza Dell'autumno Rosa by Talco - I bet no one else here has this on their playlist. I have no idea what they lyrics are but this song never fails to give me a burst of energy. I also have no idea how I found this song, but I love it when I go running.
- Run, Run, Run by Celeste Buckingham - Another song I randomly came across. This is good for getting in a groove early in a run. And then there's the song title...
- Carol of the Bells by August Burns Red - Odd song for running, I know, but it's usually played with the right temp for the "ideal" cadence of 180 steps per minute. I pick this version because it's a bit edgier than most. I play this when I need to get work on my run cadence.
- Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi Trio - Excellent mental pick up towards the end of a run. Reminds me that running is something that's should be fun.
- Soul Makoosa by Ken Field's Revolutionary Snake Ensemble - Does anyone else listen to Afrobeat? I love Afrobeat. This song will put pep in your step.
- Massive by Garaj Mahal - A good song for getting me in zone.
- Papi Chulo by Lorna
- The Ketchup Song by Las Ketchup - they have several versions. I listen to the Spanish Version
- Soul Sloshing by Venus Hum - Venus Hum was a band who backed up the Blue Man Group for one of their tours. Very happy, upbeat song.
- Come Down by Anderson .Paak
My main running playlist is here. It covers a wide variety of genres.
