Mostly sunny, mid 50s F, and a light breeze from the west -- just about perfect. Legs were better and the pace reflected that they're improving. Could post run stretch my usual, except for the right quad. Mo sense in forcing it to do something it's not ready to do.
Although Monday is usually a golf day, our League does not play on Labor Day or Memorial Day. Golf course charges weekend prices for holiday Mondays.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

@martaindale glad you got to go to your hill country house for the long weekend. Good job running all the hills!
@shanaber I'll bet Hoobs was in doggie heaven with another Viszla to play with!
@katharmonic that is some accomplishment hitting all those peaks!
I got in 8.3 miles this morning. Still hot @ 77F and 90% humidity. Thought the cooler weather was supposed to be here by now. But since it is a holiday I got out about 2 hours later than normal, and the sun was just coming up. Cloud cover helped, and I tried to relax and breathe with more control. I think that helped ease the pain.
For some reason, for the past week or two, I get really hungry during my run. I am eating the same usual breakfast, and even have been running quite a bit slower than normal. It's just weird.

6 miles today. Legs were feeling it after that 16 miler yesterday but I guess that is the point. LOL

10k plus walking to 11 miles yesterday - overcast and not too hot, it was nice!10

Mondays are rest days for me, so no run today. But I did take my dogs to the park and walked 1.25 miles. It was a little warm for the old girls, but we all enjoyed a leisurely stroll.
Sorry tou only got to hike one peak @katharmonic. I am so impressed by your hiking and just love the pictures and reports.
@martaindale We lived in Kerville for a while about 25 years ago. It was so lovely down there. I wish we had a weekend house in that area.3 -
First run of the month: 6.3 miles, average pace of 9:29 min per mile with 575 feet of elevation
Didn't get any opportunities to run last week, then on Friday my youngest son broke his arm in two places and had to get it reset, so we spent the weekend in hospital, but he's on the mend with a plaster cast for at least 6 weeks.
Anyway, got my Ultra Marathon on Saturday and it's the most unprepared I've even been for a race as I've not had much time to train. But as always, I'll just have to wing it on the day 😉.
September:
6.3/100 miles
575/10,000 feet of elevation12 -
@sweetdaisy13 hugs to your son 😩 Hope he wasn't in too much pain. You will be just fine for your ultra... You've put in the work, just have had an extra long taper 😉
Great job getting 16 miles in @RunsOnEspresso!6 -
@penguinmama87 Great job on your 10K and such a confidence boost to do better than you were expecting!
@RunsOnEspresso Nice run and great idea with the vest in the freezer!
@sweetdaisy13 Sorry to hear about your son’s arm.
@katharmonic Another peak down! Hopefully you’ll get better weather for those last ones so you can really enjoy them.
I hope everyone from the states is enjoying their holiday weekend!4 -
Sept totals: 13.3/70 miles
9/2: 3.1 miles
9/3: 4.1 miles
9/5: 3.1 miles
9/6: 3 miles
I got to run again this morning on the hills. It was harder this morning on tired legs. I had to walk 2 of the steeper hills, but wasn’t sore today like I was after the first of my runs here. I found another area to explore next time I am here. There is a community park not too far from the house that has a parking lot and could be a good starting point to access so other parts of the neighborhood.
So far on this trip we have seen a fox, a couple of jackrabbits, too many deer to count, tons of hummingbirds, woodpeckers, a walking stick, and only 1 scorpion!7 -
@sweetdaisy13 Hope your son makes a quick and complete recovery.2
-
No running for me today - rest day thanks to a niggly hip, caused by too much running in an attempt to alleviate lockdown boredom/frustration. Long walks instead. Plenty of yoga.9
-
@RunsOnEspresso - I have that pack too and haven't had any issues with the side straps. I haven't worn it for a while and when I did this last week found that it hurt my shoulder a bit where the hose came over to the front.
@sweetdaisy13 - yikes - hope your son isn't in too much pain and heals quickly! Good luck with your ultra! I think you will be just fine.
@katharmonic - so sorry your hike didn't workout to what you wanted but maybe better to do it when the conditions allow you to enjoy it more.
I didn't run over the weekend. Saturday I was tired from being up so late with the Hollywood Bowl the night before and Sunday Beaux the Vizsla puppy arrived early to stay for the week. I took both pups out for a walk/run today though. My plan was to take them and then go back out myself. My back was stiff and my hamstring felt weirdly swollen so I just left it at the ~5miles with the pups.
We did just a couple of slow run intervals since the pup is only 7mos old and doesn't get to really run on leash for a few more months. We had a squirrel run directly across and stop in the middle of the path in front of us and both pups went into point mode. Fortunately they didn't decide to try to chase and just watched it eventually go across to the other side and up into a tree there.8 -

Had a great visit with Skip, went to my first D1 college football game, it was so much fun. Great to watch her work too. Best part, saw my cousin who I haven’t seen in over 25 years, it was the best. Skip and I ran I in a park she usually runs in and there was a XC meet, of course we had to stop and watch for a while. Later I posted pictures on FB and my friend was “hhmm we were there” what! I’m 5.5 hours from home, her girls go to a math and science school in Mobile so they were there to watch them run. Small world.
Catching up on the thread….
@7lenny7 that is an interesting play list
Snakes, wasps, scorpions no thanks. I’m not going to sleep tonight.
@Avidkeo what a beautiful place to run
@RunsOnEspresso I hate when that happens, how frustrating. I put mostly ice in my vest with just a little water, maybe 8 oz, then it’s the ice melting and my water doesn’t get warm as fast. I also only put cold water from the frig in it. Nice job on the 16.
@johnisrunning great job on the Half
@katharmonic sorry the hike didn’t go as planned, hope the refresh has helped.
@sweetdaisy13 sorry to hear about your son’s arm, glad it was able to be set and didn’t require surgery

Quality session this morning - 2 mile warmup, 2x800s @ 3:08 each, 2xMile @ 6:51 each, 2x800s @ 3:08 each, 2:00 walk between sets, then a cooldown.
Really felt the fatigue of last week's mileage and yesterday's trip to the beach... Ran the first 800 in 3:12 (which used to be my target on 800s), but then somehow ran the second in 3:02 (meaning I've only once before run a faster half-mile, during my race last month).
The tempo miles were good, since the humidity was down and I was able to shave a few seconds off the target time without altering heart rate. Then hit 3:08 exactly on the last two 800s.

@sweetdaisy13 sorry to hear about your son's arm. Hope you enjoy the upcoming event!
Nice start to a streak there @swenson19d, celebrating it with ice cream is fine. You got it done, that's what matters most!
I've been too short on time to reply to all updates but did the likes and hugs dance. Will catch up better later, and maybe even see if I can update my walking progress.8 -
@shanaber it rubbed with just my arms by my side. I tried running and it just scraped my arms. I returned it and got my second choice, a camelback, coming today. I'm a little sad cuz otherwise I loved the osprey but my arms would be raw
@skippysgirlsmom I am going to try freezing like half or so then add more water before I run. I've been thinking about it for like a month or so but haven't done it yet 🤦🏼♀️
5 miles today. My legs and me were tired but we shuffled through.

@RunsOnEspresso the other day I was thinking what if I froze a block of ice instead of cubes how would that work. I'd need like a rubber tray that is 4"x12" and 1" deep that would probably stay frozen much longer than cubes.2

When we take that first step into the great unknown, I doubt we will be thinking, "I wish I had eaten less Ben and Jerry's."10 -
@Tramboman you are so right, I plan to say "that Cherry Garcia had it going on".2

That made me think about the big, round ice cubes thatbare popular for on the rocks drinks. But then I wonder how running with large ice would be? Would they slosh and smack you in the back?3 -

I've tried freezing the bladder full and half (adding water before running). Lay it flat, hose side up. Maybe run the hose under warm water if ice forms in it, to get things moving. Both methods seem to work, and it kind of depends on how hot it is and how long you'll be running, but I think I prefer half-frozen. Haven't actually bothered lately. Cubes do slosh, but if the sound doesn't annoy you, you can fill the pack with cubes, then add water. I did that a lot when I had an ice maker.
Quick check-in... ran my 14k route yesterday, and did 7k with the girls from running club today (with a break in the park halfway for drinks). Feeling tired, it's probably the adjustment to getting up earlier for school routines, but I can't yet get myself to sleep earlier to make up for it.6 -
Short 4.1 mile run, average pace of 9:36 min per mile. It was too hot to run further.

Well, back on the rails but not really moving forward too swiftly yet. It's something. Today was a stop and go trail run with Stella for the combo of dog exercise and getting a run done - which is always a bit of a dicey compromise. We did our best
Thanks for the nice words about my hike. Because I didn't post any pics before I'll leave a couple for you to show that despite the cold and miserable parts (a lot of it) there were many incredible and rewarding things to see.
This is the mountain we didn't climb but got lots of good looks at9 -
September Goal: 95 Miles
9/1: 4.05 miles
9/2: 5.51 miles
9/5: 7.51 miles
9/7: 4.11 miles
21.18/95 miles completed for September
Today's run was supposed to be a base run. 3.5 miles in 36 minutes at 10:24 average pace. As usual I ran a little further and a little slower. My run was 4 miles in 47 minutes at 11:27 average pace. On paper the temperature didn't look too bad at 71°F with a dew point of 68°. But the 90% humidity made up for it and it was still kind of unpleasant running weather. Other than that it was a pretty good run. My hip felt ok. I felt it a little today at work, but I really do think it is a sitting problem. It was really good all weekend, even on Sunday after my 7.5 mile run. The bottom of my foot started feeling a little achy when I was getting close to home. I'm thinking I must have stepped on a rock or something. Hopefully it won't give me any trouble tomorrow.

@katharmonic - those views are awesome!
@RunsOnEspresso and others on the hydration vests. I have filled my bladder partially and frozen it on an angle with the house away, then filled the remaining space with cold water and it has worked great. Better in my opinion than using ice cubes.
Today is my dh's birthday. We are celebrating without her and will celebrate when she is here too in a couple of weeks!
No run for me today but lots of busy activity with the pups. Set up an agility course and tried to get them interested but mostly they wanted to go inside. I think they are tired from all the playing and the heat. Supposed to be even hotter and more humid again tomorrow but I am hopeful it will cool down one of these days, maybe?6 -
My husband and I did a second practice run for our virtual 5k which we are planning on running on the official course around Patriot Lake. Somehow after running last month in 128 heat index I thought 88 heat index today would be easy! Well, it’s not, at least not in the direct sun. We haven’t been doing any speedwork or hill work for July or August due to heat and it really shows. We can’t even manage a 5k tempo run without a short break to cool down. We did make it up The Hill of Doom at a more respectable pace - last week’s attempt we sort of trudged up at 11 minute mile pace, this time we managed 10 minute pace. And I sort of remember how to run downhill without panicking and braking now. So, better. 31:59 which is pretty sorrowful compared to the last time we raced it which I think was 28 something? I won my AG last time, don’t think that’s gonna happen this time!
We went for a nice walk afterwards in the shade, and saw a baby deer and its mother close up. Plus a bunch of bison sleeping in the shade under the trees. They know what’s what!
@katharmonic Those are gorgeous pictures!7
