I'm sorry @TheMrWobbly !
@kgirlhart I'm sure that was really scary to get that call, especially so close to the anniversary of your dad's passing. I'm glad it wasn't worse.
@Teresa502 I am impressed that you exercised every day while on vacation! Welcome home.2 -
@TheMrWobbly Sorry about your marathon. On the upside, the Run the World challenge you started for everyone is about to hit New Zealand!
Re: horse / hedge apples, Osage oranges - they aren’t common around here but there are dozens of them at Shelby Farms, which used to be the Penal farm grounds, and before that was several different small farms. I had read about the bow wood, and also that they were once used as actual hedges to keep cattle enclosed, which seems to be the origin of these ones, as they follow the historic property lines and are gigantic. There are several weird non-native plant areas to be found in what is otherwise wilderness, marking the location of old homes and gardens, including a massive stand of bamboo.7 -

Sunny and mid 50s F today. Felt better so ran better.
@TheMrWobbly Sorry to hear about your marathon.
I am scratching from the 9/18 race. Daily cases here in Ohio are getting close to the 10,000 number. As a middle to back of the pack runner, I choose to not take the chance. So my next big decision is going to be whether or not I plan to race next year at age 70.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

@Tramboman Probably a good decision to not run your race next weekend. It was a HM, right? I'm sort of glad that the AF marathon/HM organizers decided to go virtual a month ago because I would not feel comfortable traveling to OH right now...or anywhere for that matter. My 2 cents worth is that you should go for it next year.1

I was supposed to have more time now with the kids being in school...somehow I have less...hmm....
Hoping your pain improves soon @Scott6255 and @julieannegannon !
Main change for me is I'm forced to get up earlier than I want to. Theoretically that gives me more time, but then I'm tired, so it probably evens it out. It is nice getting my running done earlier.
@TheMrWobbly and @Tramboman sorry about the not-upcoming races. It sounds like you're both making wise decisions though.
I took the kids for forest cleanup organized by the city. Half the running club was supposed to show up, but in the end all but 3 families backed out. Whatever. The kids and I aimed for the less traveled paths, and accidentally stumbled upon what looked like a group of homeless people sleeping in a remarkably hidden spot. We left quickly, but I don't blame them for picking that spot, surely it's better than a busy city spot. My children started out fighting but were singing together by the end. And the they earned extra tech time, so everyone is happy.
I'm supposed to be napping. Not sure how this 10k is gonna go tonight but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

What a difference cooler temps make. My goal was 9 miles this morning but it felt so wonderful outside that I ran 11 and then walked 1.86 for a cool down. I barely sweated! Last week my clothes were so soaked after a mile they were sticking to my body like a second skin.
Sorry for the canceled races and race plans. I’m supposed to run the Cooper River Bridge 10K in Charleston SC in a couple of weeks and I’m really surprised it hasn’t cancelled. I got an email from the organizers earlier this week and it seems to be a go still. This is my deferred registration from last April 2020 when they postponed the race to this April 2021 and now September.
Good luck tonight @polskagirl01! Love that your children ended up enjoying their outdoor time and each other’s company.
@kgirlhart – Hope your mom is continuing to heal from her fall. I cant believe it’s been almost a year since your dad passed. Hugs to all.

I wasn't in the mood to run this morning. I'm tired and over the heat. I went out and did a run/walk. I took walk breaks whenever and for however long I felt like. It made my average pace 15 minutes but 🤷🏼♀️ 8 miles done

I'm sorry @TheMrWobbly and @Tramboman . I have a race in 2 months and i am crossing my fingers that is enough time for this one to be a go!
@kgirlhart I didn’t realize this fall happened so close to the anniversary of your dad's passing. I’m sure that ups the stress level/anxiety around it. I’m glad she is on the mend.
@Teresa502 I am also impressed that you exercised every day while on vacation! I always have good intentions but it’s rare that I actually do anything except maybe one day. To be fair, our vacations are not usually very relaxing. We tend to be an activity-heavy vacationing family.
@RunsOnEspresso Good job getting it done despite the lack in motivation. Those runs are the hardest!
Good luck @polskagirl01

It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL this morning! A cool front blew in last night so it was 60F with only 80% humidity this morning. I was so glad this weather fell on my long run day. There were so any people out today enjoying the weather, even though it was early on a weekend!
I tried a new gel again today, Huma chocolate flavor. I liked the idea of this one because it is made with “real food” ingredients and I generally think my stomach handles that more predictably. It was ok. The flavor was good, kind of between chocolate pudding and frosting but not as sweet as frosting. My stomach tolerated it fine. The consistency was a little stickier than the stinger gel and it coated my mouth and the back of my throat. Wasn’t a huge fan of that. I also didn’t feel like it really perked my up at all. I took it at my usual 5-ish mile mark and never really felt that little bump I typically get after fuel. It kept me from crashing but I wonder if the real food ingredients also mean it just doesn’t hit my system in the same way or as quickly. I have one more flavor (a fruity one w electrolytes) to try so I guess I will see how that one goes. So far, honey stinger gel is still the favorite.7 -
Hi all! I don't have my personal laptop so I don't have my spreadsheet to update. I didn't run yesterday because of work and travel. This morning I ran 3.1 miles here in Killington, Vermont.
I'm here because I guess I'm doing a Spartan race tomorrow. First one in 21 months. Hopefully I'll survive to tell you all about it.

It was race day today - Total Coastal Ultra Marathon along the costal path in Devon, UK.
Distance 30 miles (48k), ran in 8 hrs 31 minutes with 6,016 feet of elevation (1,833m).
It was by far the hardest race I have ever done. Parts of the coastal path were very narrow, terrain was rocky and it was very hilly. Despite this, I really enjoyed and from mile 11 I got chatting to a fellow runner and we ran the rest of the 20 miles together.
8 -
@AlphaHowls My training plan calls for 8 miles on the 19th. Will it count if we run further than 10K?
Thanks @Martindale. It was definitely a scary phone call. I went by to check on her today and other than looking like a she was in a fight she is feeling good.
Great job on your race @sweetdaisy13 . I can't imagine running that distance.
Good luck on the Spartan @katharmonic!2 -

Pretty sure it does. I will probably be running my 17 miles.

@polskagirl01 I hate it when people commit to something and then back out. Good for you and your kids for doing your part and glad they decided to enjoy the time, rather than fight. Good luck on your race tonight. I hope you enjoy it.
@Teresa502 The cooler weather did make a big difference today. So happy for the cooler temps and less humidity. I'm surprised that they are still having in person races, but hope you get to do yours...and stay safe.
@RunsOnEspresso Great job in getting the miles in.
@martaindale Nice run. Glad you are having cooler weather too. I like the honey stinger chews. Need to try the gels.
@katharmonic Good luck with your race tomorrow. Looking forward to the race report.
Nice race @sweetdaisy13 . Glad you had a fellow runner to hang with for most of the race.1 -
Great effort @sweetdaisy13, that’s a mammoth run. Glad you made a friend en route.2

Today is the day that my community has a highway yard sale. It runs the length of the road that my road connects to. People on the connecting roads will also have yard sales, so I knew there would be a lot more traffic than normal and they would be paying a lot less attention than normal - only looking for the next place to stop and find a bargain. I decided the safest thing to do would be to run my long run on the driveway. I didn't get started until almost 9:30, but the temps were great - 61°F with 77% humidity at the start of the run and 72°F with 57% humidity at the end.
I did walk one hill every lap and one of the others part of the time. I did okay until mile 7 when I started feeling all of the ups and downs in my knees. I ran/walked mile 8 for 60/30 seconds on the most level part of my driveway. That part is a 0.17 mile lap with about 56 feet of elevation gain. I tried the first lap of mile 9 going my normal lap, but I knew that I couldn't do that for two more miles. Therefore, I finished on the level part, continuing my 60/30 sec run/walk. I actually felt pretty good and managed for mile 10 to be the fourth fastest mile of the run. I also walked a mile total for warm up and cool down.
Total elevation gain for the 10 miles was 2,937 feet.

Realized I hadn't posted a mileage update since the first of the month!
This last week I mostly walked because we were puppy sitting an 8mo Vizsla, Beaux. I did do just a little running with him and Hobbes but because he is so young I didn't want to push it. Generally he and Hobbes were perfect partners and stayed right together with me, well, at least until yesterday. I am still not exactly sure what happened but I found myself airborne and as I came in for a hard landing on the paved trail all I could think was 'oh this is not good' as I slid on the pavement. Another lady on the trail ran over to me as the pups were jumping all over me and licking my face excitedly. She was so concerned and wanted to help or call someone if needed and all I wanted was to get the pups off of me so I could get up. Once I was able to get up I realized my left hand was pretty torn up and I had a good road burn on my left knee/leg. I made my way slowly to the drinking fountain and rinsed my hands and splashed some water on my leg. I thought about having my husband come get me but instead just walked home. The shower that followed was painful and I discovered a couple of good bruises especially a huge one on my left hip.
I keep trying to figure out what happened (I haven't tripped and fallen in a long while). There is a break in the pavement where I fell so I may have tripped(?) and I think I must have twisted or turned to avoid the dogs as I ended up sliding in the opposite direction from what I was running at the time of the fall. So strange... Today I had planned to run a virtual Never Forget 9-11 Memorial 10k and I was bound and determined to get it done. I headed out thinking I would cut to a 5k if need be and seriously considered it when I realized how stiff and sore my body was. My hip hurt at the bruise and my left side (arm pit up to my shoulder blade) and my arm ached with each pump of my arm. I was sweating pretty badly and that made my hand hurt but my leg didn't hurt at all. I kept going and walked when I needed to and used the time to contemplate 9-11 and all the years since. Discovered other niggles that I am sure were also from the fall (my right wrist?) but all in all I feel better for the run and not nearly as stiff as I would have been if I hadn't gone out. @rheddmobile - I too had to look up those 'apples'. We don't have them here and I have not heard of them before.
@kgirlhart - I am so glad your mom is ok! Does she have an alert of any kind? I have the Apple Watch that will send a notification if I don't respond to it. I almost didn't get it dismissed quickly enough yesterday when I fell but I am really glad I have it. I also can't believe it has already been a year since your dad passed away. Sending you {{hugs}} another tough anniversary!
@Tramboman and @TheMrWobbly - Does your race offer a virtual option that you could switch to? I wasn't comfortable running my HM that was this morning and I switched it to virtual at no charge. I had to upload verification of my run and they will mail me my shirt and medal. Not the same as being there in person but I am happy I changed it.
@Tramboman - I like racing and prepping for the races. If you can still manage the training I would keep doing the races, it is good to have the motivation to get out the door and keep up with a plan.
@polskagirl01 - Have fun with your night race!
@sweetdaisy13 - congratulations on a great race! I can't even imagine running that far or for that long!
@RunsOnEspresso - I second being over and done with the heat... we are supposed to be hot for the foreseeable future. I keep hoping we are going to see some fall temps at some point but not going to hold my breath. I just hope it doesn't stay hot all winter too. We didi have an amazing thunder and lightening storm the other night that dumped about half an inch of rain in just a short amount of time. All it did was make the morning extremely humid. I have never seen a storm like that since living in So California. They were pretty common in Idaho though.katharmonic wrote: »Hi all! @martaindale - have you tried any of the Skratch Labs products? They are made with fruit juices and are really the only ones I have found that don't upset my stomach. I use the chews and tend to let them melt in my mouth and not chew them. They have energy bars now too but I have not tried them yet.2 -
@TheMrWobbly @Tramboman sorry for your cancelled races.
@sweetdaisy13 great job on your ultra! Nice that you made a friend to talk to for the majority of it.
@polskagirl01 good luck with your 10K tonight!
@martaindale I like the Gatorade chews and like @shanaber. I just suck on them. They last at least 5 miles per chew for me.
@shanaber ouch! That fall sounds pretty painful. Hope you aren't hurting too badly.
@quilteryoyo great job getting those miles in!2 -
Good luck today @katharmonic!
Congratulations @sweetdaisy13 – so impressive!
Thanks for the reminder about the Guinness run on the 19th @AlphaHowls!
That takes a lot of willpower to run 10 miles on your driveway @quilteryoyo. Good mental training for race day!
@martaindale – Have you tried the GU gels? I’ve tried others but always seemed to come back to them for taste and consistency.
Oh goodness @shanaber – that sounds like quite a painful fall. Walking back probably helped to keep things loose though. I would have trouble managing one dog on a leash. I can’t imagine trying to manage two (even though they are soooo cute)! Great job getting back out there yesterday for your 10k.

Mostly cloudy and mid 60s F today, with a nice breeze out of the southwest. Hips and legs were good enough so I could feel my left hamstring twanging yet again -- so I'm back to normal.

Your long run is impressive!
@sweetdaisy13 WOW! Wonderful job on the race, and I am impressed with your time. I bet you got some great scenic views!
@shanaber sorry about your fall. Hope you heal quickly!
10k race report!
Short version: I was pleasantly surprised! It was a night race in a small Polish town with a long name. There were 2 others from running club there, so I had some company before/after the race. A local (championship-winning) soccer team was there for pre-race activities, and I was interested to see how they'd do at a 10k... BUT it appears they weren't there to run - their tour bus was gone by the time I finished, and I didn't see any of them on the podiums either.September Goal 190 km
Even though it was a small race, it was a fast one from the start. I was concerned about my breathing issues lately, took the medicine as directed before the race, and tried not to get caught up in the fast pace. I think those things, combined with the perfect autumn evening weather, contributed to me not having any issues. Yay! We had 4 laps around the town, which actually broke the race down nicely from a mental standpoint. Some up and down, but nothing crazy. I did the first 2-3 laps fast for me but trying to keep the pace manageable, observing how I felt, and did feel somewhat like I was hanging on for the last lap, but that may have been because I was motivated to pass people ahead of me and was speeding up. By the time I could see the finish, I knew I could give it my all and would be ok. I actually had the thought "I'm close enough, I can breathe at the finish line," as I kicked it up and blew past the guy I'd been chasing. Sorry, but also not sorry. My time was great for me, only 38 seconds away from my PB time. Not anywhere near the fast times my fellow run club members got, but it was so nice running at my own race pace without having to gasp for air.
Medal
I don't know if it was planned (like the last night race I did), but once again, the moon on the medal looks exactly like the moon on the night of the race.

Awesome job @sweetdaisy13 glad to hear it was very enjoyable!

Glad you are OK @shanaber sounded like a rough spill!
@AlphaHowls I'm registered for that and need to check my email. They are supposed to send links and info a few days before since I don't have a FB account, otherwise it seems to all be managed there 🤷♂️ I was really hoping to be able to run it but will be walking it instead.
Great job on getting those miles in @quilteryoyo5 -
