7.2 miles this morning. It was perceptively cooler, but just barely. At the end I was just dripping wet as opposed to sweat streaming off me, so I suppose that's a win. It did feel easier though.

So the second pack arrived yesterday. Tried it on last night and am not a fan of how it fits. Sigh. Am I being too picky?!5

I'm going on vacation starting Friday, so I've been very focused on getting mileage in now while I know I can. While I intend to run while on the trip as well, it's just harder to predict how much running I'll actually be able to do when I'm away.
Add to that a lingering discomfort I had taken care of yesterday, as I had a morning trip to the podiatrist to take care of an ingrown toenail... To that end, it was probably utter lunacy that I logged a light jog this morning at all. But it's clean and recovering nicely.

I transition over to the HH Novice 2 HM plan this week. I think if you are a committed run-walk person the Galloway plan is probably great but as a running only plan, it just didn’t work as well for me once the long runs actually got long.
My birthday and my daughters birthday fall over the Labor Day weekend so this past weekend was also a birthday celebration for us. I have recently decided I wanted to try camping so my MIL/FIL got me started with a tent, some cooking utensils, and a hiking backpack. Then I promptly spend $500 on other necessities, bought a state parks pass, and booked my first weekend! I am now invested and am becoming a camper! I got the last tent spot at a state park near me for the first weekend in October. That gives my gear time to get here and for me to unpack everything and practice setting stuff up. And another month to help ease the weather towards fall. For the first trip I am going alone but there will literally be people all around me and I’m not afraid to ask for help if I need it. My daughter wants to camp too but I didn’t want the additional stress of managing her wants and needs on top of a completely new experience for the first go around. She will definitely be coming on some trips in the future.

@Scott6255 It was noticeably cooler this morning here too! Upper 60’s when I set out and it was heaven. Humidity is still high, that’s a given here but I’ll take humid and cool over humid and hot any day! Our first real taste of fall won’t last but I’m going to enjoy it while it is here.4 -

Absolutely not too picky. I regret the pack I bought, was great in the winter in long sleeves, now I wear long sleeves all the time as the side straps rub the skin off the inside of my elbows away. Be picky!

@martaindale I love camping but don't go nearly enough. Maybe twice a year. Camping will be a great opportunity to go trail running.3 -
We had a great labor day weekend on our boat with perfect sailing weather both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's run turned out to be a 5.7 mile nature run. First, just after my warm up I saw a bald eagle with a HUGE fish in its talons. It picked it up out of the water and flew up to a large tree to eat it. Just then another bald eagle, a juvenile, landed next to the first one. Soon the first one flew off, still with the fish. The juvenile flew after it and pestered the first one enough that it dropped the fish back into the lake. I stayed there for about 5 minutes but neither of the eagles came back for it. I did get photos, but they're poor quality:Here's the eagle with his fish

After that I had to take a photo of the view from the path I was on
Further on I came across about a dozen vultures feasting on dead fish, and soon after that a bunch of seagulls just hanging out
At the far end of my run is a city park. There's a short section of trail I ran and while I on the trail I came across a puffball, which is an edible fungus. Since it was early in the weekend I left it there with the intent to pick it up on the way home. When I went back, to my dismay someone had destroyed it and puffball debris littered the trail. Upon turning around, though, I found an even bigger one. This one was huge...larger than a basketball. I picked it up and brought it back to my truck to take home. I had never tried eating a puffball. I got it home and first tried it sautéed in evoo with bacon and garlic It had a really weird texture I didn't care for. Next I tried it sautéed in butter but again, that weird texture. I'd describe it as oversoaked and undercooked french toast type of texture. I'm not sure if I'll try any more of it. I may wait for the next one I find to do something else with it. I hear you can use slices as a pizza crust, or uses slices in place of noodles in lasagna. Or grill it. I'm sure I'll find some more in my trail running.

Saturday night my son joined us on the boat and the next morning he and I went on a 4 mile run. He normally runs 8 minute miles so he really had to slow down for me.

@7lenny7 I love puffballs but when they get super big they do have a weird texture. I like them best when they are about as big as a fist. I assume you know to always cut them open and make sure it’s actually a puffball and not an amanita that hasn’t opened yet. If you see any internal structures like gills, don’t eat!
I do them in butter with white wine. They should be brown and lightly crunchy on the outside of each slice and creamy inside.2 -

Hey everyone. I haven't had time to read or post since last Thursday. I still don't have time to go into details, but just wanted to let you know I am doing okay and still here. I have at least walked one mile every day, I played tennis a couple of times and I did get in my 12 mile run on Monday morning. My tummy was giving me issues before I went out to run. I felt pretty good for the first 9 miles, but at about 9.75 miles, I had a pain and just had to do what I could to make it home before it was too late. After that, I finished the 12 miles on my driveway - very slowly because the jostling of running made my tummy hurt and I just didn't feel good. At least I got it done! I think I would have been okay, had I not felt bad. The first 9 miles were at an average 13:17 min/mile pace. The last 3 miles were 14:55, 16:46, and 17:28 min/mile.12

@rheddmobile Yes, I do check for gills and for bug infestation. I'm 100% positive on the identification.
A friend of mine also told me that the smaller puffballs are better so I'll keep looking. I think one of my issues was frying at too low of a temperature which allowed it to absorb too much butter. I should have tried some in the air fryer. Next time!3 -
@7lenny7 that puffball is insane! I've just browsed google images because I had no idea about these giant puffballs. This thread is very educational.
@martaindale I hope you really enjoy your new camping hobby! I kind of think I would like it and I get kind of jealous of the people I see on my hikes who hike in and set up camp and then start from there. I'm just not sure I would REALLY like it. I'll be interested to hear how it goes for you!
@Tramboman quite possibly true about the snow! Last year we had ice and snow for the last two weekend hikes in October. It's probably going to be mid-October at least before I can get the last one in, so it's a real possibility. Definitely will be getting the microspikes out again I'm sure.
@quilteryoyo sorry about your stomach pain, that sounds like a miserable end to that run. You really toughed it out to get those 12 miles. Glad you are doing okay.

I went to HM/marathon group tonight and the weather was quite nice. It poured rain in the afternoon so I was dreading group, but it cleared and was less humid. The workout was long intervals with long recoveries. Usually we do 5-7-3 minute intervals x 2 for this one, but for some reason we did 5-7-3-5-6-4 tonight. Not sure the logic on that but it's what we got! The recovery between intervals was 3 minutes, which I walked but didn't stop my watch, so my mileage is both running and walking. I just couldn't be bothered to stop and start. This was a very long workout when adding in our warmup and cooldown and sprints. It was getting quite dark at the end.7 -

Today's run was supposed to be tge same as yesterday, a base run, 3.5 miles in 36 minutes at 10:24 average pace. I ran 4.3 miles in 49 minutes with an average pace of 11:27. It was a good run. My hip felt good and my foot that was annoying me yesterday was good too. It's still hit though and I just feel slow when it is hot. It's supposed to be a little cooler in the morning. I guess we'll see. The plan is for 5 miles at HM pace. I feel confident with the 5 miles, but not sure the pace is going to happen.

@quilteryoyo sorry about your GI issues. Those suck, especially during a run. Impressed that you got your 12 miles in after that. You're ready for your HM! Hope things settle down a little for you soon and you can catch your breath.2 -
6.2 miles this morning. If you saw my Garmin data you would be able to tell by my stride length that I was in pain the whole time. As much as I want to, I really don't think I can run two days in a row. This old body just needs at least 1 day to recover. So sad.

Sorry about the pack @RunsOnEspresso wish I had some advice, but unfortunately packs seem to be just like shoes.
Didn't run today, doing a little taper before that Saturday night 10k I signed up for last minute. I feel like I'm gonna need all the break I can get to try to get a respectable (for me) time 😆 Also the running club posts our time results on Facebook, and the other 2 club members who are running are both speedy, haha.
In other news, a bird apparently got eaten in the yard. I sent my airplane-loving kid to investigate, and when I checked with him later for an update on what happened, I was informed that "Well, due to the absence of the fuselage, it was impossible to determine the exact cause..." and the entire report sounded like one of his plane crash investigations. He did, however, assure me that it was not one of MY birds (who come to my feeder), not sure how he could tell though. I'm not a fan of the neighborhood cats. I told them to kill the MOLES, not my birds!6 -
Last night I had a 1.5 mile walk with Kody followed by a 6.5 mile run. I even run up a couple of the bigger hills, and half-way up the biggest hill. Steady progress.
I also did the Myrtl routine for the second night in a row. Perhaps I'll make this a habit after all.

@RunsOnEspresso I don’t think you can be too picky, you want it to be comfortable for long periods of time, if it’s not while standing still how can it be while running.

@martaindale Sorry about the scorpion bite. I have never lived where they were. I think I would be terrified. Even so, I would be tempted to see how many were scurrying about in my yard at night. Can you treat the yard to keep them out? I'm assuming not, or everyone would do it.

@WhatMeRunning I love my bone conduction earphones. Maybe you could go to a store that carries them so you could try them out before purchasing. I am amazed at how clear they are and love that I can still hear everything around me.
@RunsOnEspresso Sorry about the hydration vest issues. I recently bought a one by Nathan that I really like and haven't found any irritation points yet. It's supposedly made for a woman's shape. I hope you find one you like.

@johnisrunning Nice "easy" run on Sunday. I can't imagine running a HM in under 2 hours, let alone at an easy pace. I'm aiming for 3 hours for my first one coming up in a week and a half.

@Scott6255 That is weird about getting hungry during your run. I usually don't and am rarely hungry after, but try to eat something anyway. I hope you figure it out. I hate feeling hungry when I know I can't eat.

Heyyyyyy everybody!
Had a few minutes at work so thought I would pop in and say hello and see how you are all doing. I've been good - training my face off, working, raising kids. Not much has changed except an increase in intensity and the super fun teen years with my daughter.
I have a lot of racing scheduled but we'll see what does and doesn't get cancelled.
How is everybody? Hanging in there and continuing to push yourselves, I hope.

Good afternoon everyone. I started back with running. On Tuesday I tested the waters by running indoors by jogging in place. My Fitbit said I had gone 4.3 miles. Had no discomfort. This morning I went for a run outside and it was a little tender but I ran and but the pain stopped when I went for awhile. I stretched my hips when I got home and laid with cold on my hip. It’s my left side and everything seems a little tight. I’m going to monitor it and instead of doing cross training on the resting day I’m going totally rest it. I will try to attempt another run on Saturday. If it’s still uncomfortable I will definitely call for an appointment with a sports medicine doctor. I’m thinking it’s either a muscle strain or bursitis because it happens when I extend the leg and it doesn’t happen when I am running in place.
