5 mile run yesterday with running club. Did a sprint work session and had an average pace of 8:20 min per mile, but was mostly running 8:06 during the efforts. I don't like sprinting, but I enjoyed it and sometimes I need to go out of my comfort zone.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate!
We did an easy version of Thanksgiving this year - mostly pre-made store-bought stuff, and split the preparation work with hubby so neither of us had to stand around in the kitchen for too long. No guests - son's entire class is now under quarantine orders anyway. The food was good and it didn't wear us out making it. Perfect. Hubby is still tired but getting better. I'm feeling alright, tired and somewhat sore, but mostly just paranoid that every single [perfectly normal] movement I feel in my digestive system could be the stone moving. I have an appointment in a week, so will hopefully know more then.
I did go to Polar Bear Club today and the water was colder than last week (1 or 2°C) but felt good, and actually maybe helped with the soreness. Did my first warmup by dancing in place, then ran in circles a bit after my first few minutes in the water, and felt fine. So I may try a treadmill walk/run tomorrow, if I feel like it. No hurry, but if it feels good, maybe it will help.10 -

I did an unsanctioned turkey trot with a few friends this morning and then went to the Turkey Burn class at the gym. It was a tough class with 4 different stations that had 3 exercises each. Each station was 8 minutes long and you had to do as many rounds as possible during that time. One of the hardest was doing sandbag burpees, as if I didn't hate regular burpees enough.
After that I mostly have been relaxing, took a nice nap, and then took the dog out for a long walk. Now I'm getting ready to eat back a lot of those calories.

Not dead yet! Haven’t run since I’m unable to get an appointment until the holiday weekend is over but I did a lifting workout and my heart rate stayed normal.13 -
Did my little 15-minute weight machine routine today, and 2 km on the treadmill. Felt really good. Now I'll take a nap to balance things out.5

Cloudy, low 30s F, with a little light snow driven by a gusty west wind. I'm thinking Thanksgiving food accompanied by wine is not particularly good running fuel.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

@skippygirlsmom I hope you are enjoying your time with Skip - alone. I totally understand how you feel. Sometimes, you just need some alone time with the ones you love.
@Teresa502 Sorry the booster got you down. Glad you are feeling better now.
@rheddmobile So sorry to hear about your ER visit and how awful it was. I pray that you are doing better and this is a one time event. I feel so bad for that family and everyone who was in the ER that day. It's crazy how "bad" they have become.
@martaindale Sounds like you found a great place for speed work. You are doing great. Hope you are enjoying your time in the hill country.
@WhatMeRunning What the doctor told you is scary.
@kgirlhart Your encounter with the cat is funny...and scary. Glad you and it were both okay in the end.
@shanaber Sorry the free shoes aren't you favorite, but, they were free! I like the color. Hobbes and Beaux are too cute. Glad neither of you were hurt in the fall. I think that is what we are all exercising for this month.
@Tramboman You are doing great. Have your legs gotten used to the idea of running everyday? Black squirrels? Is that the norm in your area. Most here are grey. My red fox jumped across my driveway right in front of my car the other day, then I saw a coyote zooming across the neighbor's field at the end of my driveway. That same day, mom almost got run over by two deer who ran across my driveway right in front of her as she was walking up here to take care of Tippy when I was at work. It's that time of year, I guess. Hahaha about Thanksgiving food and wine not being good running fuel. It is good sleeping fuel though.
Glad to see you are on the run @AlphaHowls . I was just thinking that I hadn't see a post from you lately. Hope all is going as well as it can be at this point.
@Scott6255 Running in those winds on Thanksgiving......I'm sure you did get a good workout. I would have opted for the treadmill cuz I'm a wimp.
@polskagirl01 I'm glad your DH is feeling some better and that you aren't having any pains from the kidney stone. I know what you mean about thinking every "normal" feeling isn't normal. That happened when I knew I had the aneurysm. It's hard to not have those thoughts. I hope the stone passes without pain. Polar Bear Club - you're a beast. Is it every week?
My back is still not allowing me to run much. It's better, but not normal. I did walk 5K yesterday on the treadmill. I'm beginning to really need some exercise for my mental stability. Walking one mile isn't really doing it. I'm going to try running a mile today and see how it goes.
You all are doing great and I am thankful for each and every one of you. Your friendship and support mean more to me than you will ever know.8 -
Black Friday 26 Nov. I hit 1900 miles today for Run the Year. At 163.4 for the month out of 150 so going to have a really pretty decent month.
I have also challenged myself to see if I can get all the rest of my splits under 10 min miles. If I do that I will have almost exactly 50% of my miles at that pace. It's funny the little challenges we present to ourselves.
Pretty chilly but the winds were light today and I was dressed for it. I still cannot imagine running more than a half every single day. wow... Many years ago I began to realize I always felt crappy on my next day runs after drinking or over eating at Thanksgiving or other celebrations. Alcohol specifically seems to effect me and dehydrate me. Plus honestly it makes me mopy. So I don't drink. LOL. I like the special holiday foods like cranberry sauce etc but I work to fit it all in to my calorie goals for the day.1-Nov 5.03

Polar bear club is twice a week. Meetings aren't very long - most people do 2-3 minutes at a time with jogging/dancing before and in-between to warm up, maybe 3 sets, then they run back to the lockerroom to get dried off and changed. There are all ages, but most are older than me. I've only been 4 times this season though because of how everything has gone this month. Not the best for getting acclimated, but everyone else reacted to the colder water yesterday the same way I did, so I guess I'm not doing too bad. The kids love it, although daughter spends more time on the steps with just feet in the water. That hesitation actually makes it harder IMO - you've just got to go into the water in one confident movement. It definitely gives you an endorphin boost!4 -

I knew I probably wouldn't get a chance to post yesterday and I didn't. But I did run. There are never any Turkey Trots around here, and traveling for a race on Thanksgiving doesn't work for me. But I did get out and run 5 miles before starting the day. It looked pretty outside, but it was cold and extremely windy. So I both enjoyed and didn't enjoy it. 🙃 I did run by and see Sunny the Donkey. It was nice to be able to sleep in a bit and run when it wasn't dark. I had a nice Thanksgiving. I ate way too much, but enjoyed the day with my kids and my mom and all of my sisters and some of the nieces and nephews. I think we ended up with about 25 people. I also got to see my "granddog", Ein the Corgi. So all in all a great holiday. And I am off until Monday so looking forward to that. I should be able to get the last 5 miles in and meet my goal of 100 miles for November.

I ran with a friend to celebrate her birthday today. We ran 8 ½ miles to the Pinnacle Fire Tower (elevation gain 3781 feet). It wasn’t too cold when we started – around 34F but at the top of the mountain the wind was blowing and it was at least 10 degrees colder.
@katharmonic – 8 minutes is a long time to be doing burpees! Sounds like a burner indeed!
Glad you are feeling better @polskagirl01 and glad your heart rate is behaving @rheddmobile.
Hope you had a great birthday @AlphaHowls!
Congrats on 1900 miles ytd @SummerSkier!
Did you get to run @quilteryoyo?
4 -
I did get in a treadmill run today to test out the back. I walked half a mile warm up and cool down and ran a mile at 4.5 mph. It felt ok. I did feel a bit of a twinge while running, so it's probably good that I stopped at 1 mile today. I also did the exercises the chiropractor wants me to do. I find that the "bird dog" pose "hurts" my back, but only when I raise my left leg. I say hurt, but it isn't a stabbing pain, more like a dull ache. Hopefully, I'll be okay in the morning. If so, I may try for a little bit of a longer run and see what happens. I really need to burn more than 140 calories, or fewer, when I exercise. The calorie intake certainly isn't waning these days.8
-
@quilteryoyo I hope your back will behave and you'll soon be able to run as much as you want.
Someone mentioned squirrels 😁 In PA we always had grey squirrels, and then I moved to Poland and at some point my preschooler needed a squirrel costume. So I made one, using a grey furry piece off of an old coat for the tail, and cute grey ears. Oops. Apparently they thought it was a cat costume, because here squirrels are orange. Sometimes they're black. They have cute furry ears.picture from Google

@polskagirl01 That's funny about the squirrel costume. Love the picture. The red ones are definitely prettier than the grey one's we have here.
1 -
@polskagirl01 The red squirrels are so cute! I love their fluffy ears! We also have the grey ones and when we were in DC I remember seeing a lot of black ones that are quite a bit smaller than the ones we have in TX.
@shanaber I also think of the movie The Holiday every time I hear about Santa Anna winds. I’m not sure I knew they were a thing until I watched that movie.
@SummerSkier Sounds like a nice challenge you have set up for yourself. I know where most of the mile and half mile markers are in my neighborhood but quarters are a little tougher. Doing shorter speed work in the past has usually meant paying more attention to my watch than I really like while running.
Glad to hear everyone enjoyed their holiday. We did not do a traditional Thanksgiving this year because no one in my family loves the traditional food and it’s a lot of work for me if no one is dying to eat it. Maybe next year things will work out better to have the whole family together. This year it was just the 3 of us plus a friend from work that doesn’t have any family in town. I have made some delicious food this week and plenty of dessert!

Thanksgiving day I had a short easy run. Like a couple others mentioned the winds were crazy ahead of a cold front. Why does it always feel like 20 mph winds are in your face on uphills and behind you on downs? Like an 8-10% grade hill isn’t hard enough without a stiff wind in your face!? I ran this without my phone and the GPS tracking was nonsensical, estimating over 8 miles and then 35 when I “corrected” it in strava, so I just deleted the run and put in a manual entry. At least I had it plotted out before I took off because I was really running blind. I don’t know the distances very well out here yet and I’m still trying to explore some different routes to figure out what I like.
I moved my Long run to Friday because the weather today is lows in the low 40s and rainy all day long. Generally, I like running in the rain, and I like running in the cold, but I’m not sure I want to run in the cold rain. It was beautiful yesterday and my husband needed to run as well, so we went to a part of the neighborhood he hasn’t run much and did the first 4 miles together and then I wrapped up the second 4 alone. His pace is significantly slower than mine, and that works out well for me here, because I think if I tried to do my long runs at their usual pace, the hills would really kill me. Running with him forced me to slow down significantly, and I actually felt pretty fresh at the end of the 8 mile run. Compared to my home neighborhood, there are very few runners here. Even with what seems like pretty minimal efforts, my husband and I are gaining placement in the all time Strava time records because there are so few people that run out here! Also, despite there being very few runners, drivers out here seem really considerate and actually veer to the other side of the road to make sure that I know that they see me and they are nowhere close to hitting me.6 -
RAINY and COLD today. yucko. Had to wear my "I dont care if they get soaked shoes" which are definitely not as fast. 169 of 150 miles for Nov so just plugging away now at run the year. Have to avg 3.4 to make the last 115 miles. My Dec goal is going to be a "faort" on. (fast and short) a la @Tramboman
@martaindale I love that you are faster than your hubby. Whenever I ran with people in the past (BF, ex etc) they were always faster than me. I have PTSD from the military runs so when people try to "pace" me by running slightly ahead of me it stresses me out to the point I will stop and just wait for them to get way ahead and do my own thing.
@quilteryoyo I still think it's the treadmill or your shoes which are making your back hurt. I always felt like I was pounding away whenever I was on a treadmill in the past. Glad you are experimenting with it and hopefully it will get better soon.
@polskagirl01 it's funny about the red squirrels. Glad you are feeling better and no more "stone" activity so far. I wonder if the squirrels are that color because of your flora being more red there?

It was cold this morning and I didn't think about the paved trails having snow/ice on them so I didn't wear my trail shoes. I am not yet winter run ready! Fortunately the sun was quickly melting most of the light snow cover so conditions quickly improved. My mood about running in the cold and wind, however, did not improve too much so I cut it short. I was just not feeling this as a long run day.5 -
@martaindale I don't blame you for moving your run to tomorrow. I wouldn't want to run in cold rain either. Sounds like both you and your husband are doing great!
@SummerSkier I have done a lot of running on the treadmill in the past and haven't had any issues and the shoes I am wearing are fairly new and hadn't given my any problems before. I think I have just really aggravated it over several months/years and it is taking a while to get over it. I have been using the heating pad for a long time, thinking it was normal aging. Now, I don't think it is. It'll get there. I'm confident. And I'll be better for it.
@katharmonic I'm glad the sun melted the snow quickly and you didn't fall or have any big slips. I understand not wanting to run in the cold wind. Hopefully, the weather will be better for you tomorrow.1 -
Re: black squirrels. I remember the first time I saw a black one, I was visiting my aunt in Ontario, and it was sitting right outside my window. I thought I was losing my mind and went and got my cousin, shouting, “There’s a black squirrel outside!” He was like, “And?” All of their squirrels are black. It seems to be mostly a northern thing. Ours in Memphis are gray except for at Overton park, where strangely they are red with tufted ears. Since that park is near the (very old) zoo I wonder if they were deliberately introduced at some point. The zoo did all kinds of crazy things back in 1913 or so, such as introducing red foxes to the park.
On a related subject, our albino raccoon has relatives! I looked them up, and it seems it’s a stable mutation which is recessive, and causes albinism when the animal has two genes, but causes color dilution when the animal has only one gene. So where there are white raccoons, there are likely to be blonde and cinnamon raccoons around somewhere. On Thanksgiving, a giant momma raccoon and one tiny baby showed up and both were blonde, white with light brown markings. Momma was extremely shy and hid under the neighbor’s deck when I tried to get a photo but hopefully we will see them again. The albino one has been visiting regularly.
Running related - can’t even reach the cardio office for an appointment until Monday. Trying hard not to freak out at the thought of something being wrong with my heart. I have new running shoes! Fortunately I have the inspiration of @quilteryoyo and @shanaber to remind me that even if something is seriously wrong, it’s possible to fix it and move forward and run again. Planning to go out for a walk today and keep an eye on it, see if it stays within range at a brisk walk. I think I probably have lupus-related myocarditis or pericarditis which has happened in the past, since my feet have petichiae and my chest feels wrong in the particular way it has in the past with myocarditis. Also, my platelets were low at the ER which usually means vasculitis for me.8 -
@rheddmobile I hope you can get an appointment soon, and good news from the cardiologist.1

@rheddmobile That is cool that the albino raccoon has blonde cousins. I hope you get a picture to share. I also hope you can get in to see your cardiologist on Monday and get good news. Not knowing and worrying about what it might be is the worst. Hang in there.1

@quilteryoyo I still think it's the treadmill or your shoes which are making your back hurt. I always felt like I was pounding away whenever I was on a treadmill in the past. Glad you are experimenting with it and hopefully it will get better soon.
@quilteryoyo - when I read your post about running on the treadmill and your back tightening, I thought the same thing as @summerskier. When I have had back issues in the past myy back would hurt when I ran on the treadmill but not on the street or trail. Is there anyway you could try a short run outside but close to home?

what drives me crazy about getting older is that my body is no longer as forgiving. Things I could do just 5 years ago - like wear a pair of shoes until they fell apart - just don't happen anymore. That's why I mentioned the treadmill or shoes. But @quilteryoyo it sounds like you have done that experiment already ... I do know backs take forever to get better. I compressed a vert and broke my butt one year falling off my horse. The butt healed in a few weeks but the compressed vert took almost a year before I could wake up and feel normal when I sat up.
I ran in my "rain" shoes yesterday. It's crazy to me how AWFUL they felt after using my normal shoes for weeks and weeks. It was like there was no bounce. And it's funny because I know folks who prefer that shoe for all their running. Sometimes I wonder if they tried my other shoe they would feel the difference? A few years ago I googled all the BEST women's running shoes for the year. Then I bought 5 pair (of the last year model so not really pricey). That was how I discovered Hoka. All the others were awful. Personal pref of course plays a large part. But I have never been afraid to try something different in shoes I just always end up back with Nike. (sigh). Of course I did not discover my Rocket shoe (my name for it) until my coach told me about it. Wow. Those took almost 30 to 40 sec per mile off my time (some sort of plate in them). Felt like if I raced I would be cheating. LOL.
@rheddmobile I hope you can get in to see the cardio tomorrow. Back in 2012 I think it was or 11 I was having chest pain and anxiety attacks. I did not know that's what it was. I went to the ER. Nope - no heart attack. Went to the Cardiologist. He did not find anything but I ended up getting an echo. Nothing there either. It wasn't until I did a stress echo they found a mitral valve prolapse which can cause anxiety out of nowhere. The chest pain was most likely from not eating enough or eating right. (for me that happens - remember your heart is a muscle so it needs nutrition). You sound like a pretty complex case. At least they ruled out the heart attack. ....... hugs....

Cloudy, mid 30s F, with a light southwest wind and a few snowflakes to join the 2 inches of snow on the ground. The running trail was mostly clear - just had to high step my way across the wooden foot bridges to keep my toes dry. Plenty of tracks -- deer, fox, coyote, cat, dog, squirrel, and people...but no otter or goose.
@rheddmobile Hoping the news from the doctor is good.

28 Nov. Fabulous weather after such a dank, chilly, gloomy rainy day yesterday. 104.5 miles left to go for Run the Year. My streak of under 10 min pace is now at 38 miles. I pushed today to get 2 of them under 9 so I have 114 total miles with an 8 in front for the year. 2 more days left in Nov. 179 miles complete out of 150 goal. 4.5 mile cross country race, average pace of 8:21 min per mile - representing my running club in a local league. I usually run trails up the mountain, but this was something different and there was of course plenty of mud, so I enjoyed.
