The weather was absolutely perfect today. Started out a little chilly at about 48°F but ended at 55°F. There was a light breeze, but not windy. The sun was shining and it was just a beautiful fall morning. I didn't really have a plan for this run other than at least 10K. I just enjoyed the run. I saw a beautiful red tail hawk. I often see a hawk in that area sitting in a utility pole, but today he was soaring and was just beautiful to watch. I also ran by and saw Sunny the donkey. Yesterday I drove by the house and saw a lady feeding her so that was nice. I was pretty sure someone was taking good care of her, but it was nice to see. She was walking over from the house next door. I guess if you have a dilapidated house next door that turning it into a donkey shed is one way to keep squatters out.
I did forget to charge my Garmin yesterday so my watch died on me at 7.92 miles. Luckily I had decided to play Zombies Run, so I was able to get an accurate mileage from the GPS on that and ended up with 8.72 miles.
@rheddmobile I hope you are able to get the heart issues figured out soon.
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children - 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon - PR 2:07:11 and 1st in AG6 -
Great running over this long Thanksgiving weekend everybody! You are so inspirational!
9 miles again this afternoon. Felt better than Thursday, but probably because winds were only 15mph. HR quite a bit higher these past few runs. I guess I am more out of shape than I thought, just from taking off a week or so? That doesn't seem right. But average HR is about 20bpm higher than normal, even going easier than I am used to.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Today was my first run of the week. I had a sinus infection, and the combo of a low grade fever and my meds just knocked me out for most of the week. Today’s training run was a progression run with 20 min at an 11:13-11:43 pace, and 10 min at 9:13-9:43 pace.
Total miles: 41.3
I hate that I missed 3 runs last week. I may try to squeeze in an extra run this week. I have a Reindeer Run 5K on Saturday.
@rheddmobile, I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow and you can figure out what is going on.6 -
Great running everyone.
@SummerSkier and @shanaber Thanks for your thoughts on my back. It is getting better. I did run on the road today and could feel it tightening up before a mile was up, but I kept going and it felt better. It's just a little tight tonight. Fingers crossed it is almost better.
Nice race @sweetdaisy13 ! It sounds like you did your running club proud.
I did run an easy 2.0 miles on the road today, ending at mom's for lunch. It felt pretty easy and my back is holding up pretty good. I can feel it tonight, but I think that is more from watching movies while lounging on the couch all afternoon. Not the best thing to do when your back is bothering you. I averaged 12:16 min/mile and ran the last 0.2 mile at a 10:09 min/mile pace. That felt fairly easy too, but I was on a level/downhill part of my route. Still, I was pleased with the run today.
On the way to church this morning, we saw 5 deer on a hill near my house. One of them was black. I've never seen a black one before. Poor quality pictures under the spoiler - they were fairly far away.
Shows how far away they were from us.3 -

I hunted deer for 50 years and, although I saw some white ones, I never saw a black one. Melanism among deer is very rare.3 -
I’ve been a bit absent as we get ready to move on Wednesday. The running has taken a bit of a hit too. And the eating is a bit out of whack too - I concluded I was procrastination eating today as you can’t pack with a cup of coffee in one hand and a biscuit in the other.
I’m trying to focus on the fun and excitement of the new house but it’s tricky, especially as the children are emotional and acting out.
Back to running on Thursday, but with the added bonus of discovering new routes, and hopefully new running buddies in time.9 -

I looked it up and that is a very unusual deer! Not only is melanism rare in deer, in the photos I could find, none of the melanistic deer had a white throat, they were all solid black. So I was wondering if it was darker without being actually black, but all the darker colored deer I could find had lost the throat marking as well. Nifty deer @quilteryoyo !3 -
Ran a very cautious mile Saturday night while keeping a close eye on my heart rate, and it seemed normal. Hoping to make an appointment Monday but not hopeful it will be soon, since I have recent experience with scheduling appointments at our local cardio clinic and it took my husband something like two weeks to get in, with a doctor with privileges there making the appointment, which I don’t have.5
-
@rheddmobile I didn't even notice the white patch on the deer's neck. That would make it piebald, which is still rare, but not quite as rare. Since there was only that small area, I'm still calling it black. I hope you get to see the cardiologist soon. Glad your run was uneventful.2
-
@marisap2010 I hope you're feeling better and that your race on Saturday goes great! Your body is working hard while you're sick - there's no need to make up that extra run.
Nice deer @quilteryoyo
@ContraryMaryMary best wishes on your move!
I was able to do a bunch of housework, and a short home-gym workout today. I'm not as tired as I was yesterday, so that's a step in the right direction.4 -

Down some of miles this month, that's okay, made my monthly goal and I'm feeling good on longer runs. I need to read the thread as usual!
Hope everyone had a great holiday, I spend 4 days with Skip at the beach (and a football game at her school). Sorry for the picture overload, had a chance to run some on the same course we'll do doing a HM (me) and Marathon (her) in February.
Sorry for the picture overload - I love watching her do her thing during the games. She was directing all the stuff that goes on during commercials for the jumbotron, like they had senior day, introduction of the SBC championship Girls volleyball team, all that stuff.
Cute little alligator near the course of the Feb race
Relaxing time on the beach
Thank you all I had a fantastic time visiting with my girl. When did she grow up, can’t believe she’s a college senior! I had a big laugh after the game with her, I sat next to the sweetest man and his HS senior grandson. I totally enjoyed the game more because of them. Driving back to the beach Skip said “what a sweet old man” I said you know he told me he was 62, 2 years older than I am. She looked at me and said “what a sweet old momma you are” LOL
@rheddmobile I hope you are okay! How scary. Freaking ER. My friend was just telling me he had a cardiac event about a week ago when running with his kids on bikes following with him. He’s okay I pray you are too.
@WhatMeRunning – that is a scary reply from a doctor
@Teresa502 glad you are feeling better
Great job to those who reached goal and great job working hard for those who did not. It’s all about getting out there.
@martaindale sounds like a much nicer loop than a track.
@shanaber wow on the winds.
Happy Birthday @AlphaHowls
@polskagirl01 I’m sorry 2C doesn’t sound good to me at all LOL Too funny on the squirrels. Our one state park has a white one. I know someone recently posted a picture of him, I need to go find it.
@quilteryoyo sorry your back is still giving you issues
@katharmonic if I tried 8 minutes of burpees the EMTs would have to come get me.

Today is my last run day of the month (Tuesdays are HIIT at the gym). I'm short 9.5 miles to my goal, but given how the month went I'm pretty happy with that as my mileage is still up per run by a pleasing amount. I'm considering November a win still.

Thanks for setting us up.
I am up to 39.6 kilometers for the ENTIRE MONTH. That's lower than my average week for at least the past year. What a month!9 -
I hear you @polskagirl01! I will miss my goal by 39 miles, the lowest monthly total in over 16 months. But we will be stronger in 2022!!!!!!6

Back home and an easy 4 miles this morning. It was chilly, in the mid 40’s and clear. I love this time of year where the weather is crisp and cool!
I read a book on the Hanson’s method and am considering giving it a shot for a future training segment. It was interesting because the long runs are shorter than the plans I typically use but there are more days a week of running, with the idea being that cumulative fatigue from multiple shorter runs mimics the feeling of your long run being more like the end of the race than the beginning, where your legs are fresh. The overall mileage is also substantially higher than I have been running the last couple of years.
This training segment so far has made me realize that I am not really progressing any longer, and I think some of that is just because I am not doing anything new. If you want your body to adapt, it needs new challenges. While I don’t know that I will ever be “fast” I do think I have some room for improvement and I would love to see what I am capable of.
I don’t remember anyone specifically mentioning if they used these plans in the past but was curious if any of you have tried them and what your thoughts (good or bad) were on the experience.1 -
@martaindale - Sort of, I would say "mostly yes" to following the Hanson method beginning in late spring 2015 through summer of 2016, a period in which I trained to run 3 full marathons within 30 days in the fall of 2015, and carried that into a series of 6 half marathons between April and May 2016.
Reason I say "sort of" is because my legs didn't have "it" to do the faster efforts. But it is WHY I started running 6 days/week, for that exact concept in the Hanson method to go into my long run (for that matter almost every run) with tired legs. I actually incorporated a second, shorter long run into my weeks, and did a couple back to back long runs during all that too.
So, not "technically" following the method, verbatim. But definitely inspired by it, and all that training on tired legs paid off big time. I was so not feeling it the day of that second full marathon 3 weeks to the day after the first one. But I made it. And while the 3rd one just one week after that was my slowest of the 3 full marathons, it was the one I enjoyed the most, smiling and joking with people I was running with and at all the aid stations. I knew I had it at that point and was just over the moon knowing I was going to finish it.
Not sure if that answers your question much, but there it is.6 -
29 Nov 184.9 against goal of 150. Only 99.5 total left for run the year... Debating whether to sort of stretch that out in Dec or get it while the getting is good. LOL.
My coach returned last week to Austin so tomorrow will be my first track workout in a few months. I wonder what new devilment torture he will have planned for us..

@martaindale I have never heard of that method of training. It will be interesting to follow your progress.

Thank you for keeping us going for December!!!0 -
@quilteryoyo - love the deer. So unusual! Glad the back is feeling a little better and you were able to run a bit.
@skippygirlsmom - love all the pictures! I think it is great that you can see her in action and get to run and just enjoy being with her! Time does seem to be going by so fast! I can't believe she is a senior already! I remember when she was starting to run track for the HS!
Thanks for setting up December for us!
@martaindale - I have not tried the Hanson method but I have read about it. I couldn't manage the number of workouts it required with my schedule when I was training for my HMs. Now I no longer need to train for long distances, but I am trying to get to the point of doing more speedwork just to introduce some change into my training.
I am hoping to get a run in tomorrow to wrap up the month. Beaux the Vizsla puppy goes home on Wednesday and I will sort of miss his fast paced workouts 😂 I will have to see if I can get Hobbes to move like that without Beaux around to push (and pull) us along.
I will not make or even come close to my goal but with everything going on this month I am not surprised. Like others it will be one of my lowest, if not the lowest, non-injury month, maybe since I started running. Next month and next year will be better!
5 -
No luck getting an appointment today - stayed on the phone for over an hour twice and couldn’t even get through to the office. It’s possible they were closed for the holiday although their website says they were open today.7
-
Thanks @shanaber . I'm sure you will miss Beaux, but at least you can go for a visit and have playdates.
@rheddmobile That's annoying. I hope you can get through to them tomorrow and get an appointment soon.
@skippygirlsmom Thanks for setting up the December thread!
I didn't have the time or the energy for a run after work today, so did a mile walk on the treadmill and then did my back exercises. The back is still feeling a lot better. I still get tightness, but no stabbing pains for almost a week. Yeah!
I am going to have to get a new computer. After having this one worked on last week, I can't open my running spreadsheet! That's a bummer. The file is there, I just can't seem to access excel. When I get a chance, I'll talk to the repair person I took it too and see if there is anything I need to do to get it back, or if I just need to give in and get a new computer. I was hoping to wait until the first of the year, but I don't think I want to wait when I can't access all of my files.3 -

Treadmill run before strength training tonight.I hear you @polskagirl01! I will miss my goal by 39 miles, the lowest monthly total in over 16 months. But we will be stronger in 2022!!!!!!
@scott6255 and @polskagirl01 I am also way under my monthly goal and my lowest miles in a couple of years I think. And I don't have injury or illness to account for it. I honestly am not sure why this month was so bad but there was travel and hiking I guess. The mileage for the year is also going to be the lowest in years. I will try to rally a bit in December but will have to find some motivation and inspiration to do better in 2022. I hope the both of you continue to heal and recover.5 -
@WhatMeRunning Thank you for that insight. That was helpful. Looking at the plans, I also wondered if I would be able to keep up with the plan, but I guess I won’t know until I try. I started out with 3 days a week and 2019(?) moved to 4 days a week. I started a portion of a HH HM plan that is 5 days a week to prep for my January race, so I am making that transition now. I honestly don’t know if life would allow me to keep up 6 days a week indefinitely, but for a set time, I would be willing to do what it takes to make it work. If for no other reason to see the results.5

Woo, was out of the loop for a while, guess that's what happens with vacation. I find it difficult to follow the community posts on my phone. Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving and is happy with their November mileage and goals! It's getting cold out there (at least for this New Englander)

124.3/130 for November. If I can squeeze in 5.7 today I meet my goal, woohoo! It will be hard though because Tuesdays I work two jobs, have a class for the kiddo and need to be available for bus drop off. Doesn't leave a lot of time until after 8pm and by then I have no motivation. We will see!9 -
Last day of Nov!!!
190.07 against goal of 150. Only 94.3 total left for run the year... Nov was a good month weather wise for sure and I really enjoyed running. I am now "streaking" at 48 miles under a 10 min split in a row and it seems to be getting easier once I get that first mile in.
My coach ended up cancelling for today as he had a sore knee and wanted to rest before his next race Sat. (last week he did 5K in 20:20!) so I ended up with 2 shorter runs today. I think my shortest run this month was the rainy cold nasty day when I did 4.
