Not terrible for our large family but a lot to shell out. I think the list our school requires is appropriate but of course that does not take into account the specialized list certain teachers have.

That $1450 would pay one year fee for hockey for my kid (excluding equipment, uniform, etc...)

Like I said, not too bad for a large family. Of course that does not include everything and the extra curricular fee is good for only one event if they wanted to do, say football and baseball, we would have to pay the fee twice for each person. That also did not include band fees or food. I've heard hockey is very expensive to get into. My husband played for a while.

Point was that for 6 kids to only spend 1400 on them which includes supplies and sports....aint that bad. IMHO0 -

What planet do you live on where a dozen pencils cost $10? Or the other prices I pulled from your list? You're either mistaken, intentionally exaggerating for the sake of the post, or you're way overspending.
We live 1.5 hours from town. There are no discount stores close by. These are the prices I would spend locally. If I were to drive into town I could spend less. certain thing (paper products) have to be bought from the school by their supplier so that they are the same for everyone. As for glue sticks for 9th graders, I scratched my head at that one too.0 -
How about an alternative? Get the mini rasin boxes instead, set an example.0

Most schools ban candy from classrooms. When my daughter was in school (she's homeschooled now) her teacher had a prize box but it was small toys, cards, crayons, puzzles etc and we were asked to send things in only if we wanted to.0

I'm a teacher too and refused to give out candy for anything!
My classroom has a "check book" and they use it to buy extra privileges with it. I think they would kill a man for a day of outside free time!
Personally, I would refuse to do. I would send in some dried fruit, nuts and carrot sticks. I tried that one day with my students and they loved it! Whenever they see me eating it, they always try to scam some out of me!0 -

thought about it but we are against online shopping. Not very techie and we have had problems with getting hacked before so we just don't do it.0 -
My school (TX public school) forbade teachers from giving out any food/drink... The exceptions were the crackers we had to keep on hand for a diabetic kiddos prone to low sugar- and even they had to be escorted by another student to the nurse before receiving the snack. We only gave out snacks/water bottles/sugar-free peppermints that the school gave us during state testing in the spring.
For incentives, we gave out stickers, pencils, erasers, no homework passes, extra bathroom passes, and tickets to larger prizes (treasure box in the room that they could pick a prize after getting so many tickets- nothing food/drink related).0 -
My son had Kleenex, Lysol wipes, & hand sanitizer on his list... He has a mini hand sanitizer on his backpack 4 his own use but they wanted a bigger bottle 4 every1 to use...0

I personally like the sticker idea. Stickers are cheap; you can get a sheet or more at the dollar store.Maybe you could ask the teacher if a bag of cheap-o prizes would be a suitable replacement instead of the candy? Or stickers? That might give him/her the idea to start using that instead. That's what I did as a teacher most of the time, although candy IS a lot cheaper and teachers do end up shelling out a lot of personal funds to keep their classrooms stocked.0 -

I agree it is not that bad. It was not for all 6 to do sports though. The little ones aren't allowed to do sports. In our schools system you have to be in junior high or wait until the summer leagues start (they are different prices and not school run)0 -
I don't think the amount of candy they would get as an occasional treat at school would be anywhere near enough sugar to cause cavities. Same with birthday cake and party candy. Oral hygiene is key. I just think its wrong to pass the buck on the teacher.
Thank you. I was waiting to see something like this. I agree...unless the kid is eating a ton of candy at school, that isn't the sole problem.
I also disagree with the schools only allowing healthy treats in, and not allowing kids to bring the junk. I don't me kids to eat it everyday, but I see nothing wrong with cupcakes for birthdays. Maybe that's why I'm fat....but I think they should be able to have something sweet once in a while.0 -

The best "punishment" I can give as a teacher is a 30 minute detention after school and a phone call home.
You can have your students stay 30minutes afterschool?! I never could do that- our school used to allow it for car-riders only (obviously bus kids would have no way home). Then, the school outlawed it entirely because the parents of the car-riders (who were generally more well-off and not economically disadvantaged) complained and said it wasn't fair that their child had to stay but that bus-riders never had to... so we were forced to have "Lunch Detention" which meant that the student had to sit for 10minutes in the class at lunchtime. No longer than 10 minutes though, or they would miss lunch, and we were not allowed to have the student bring a lunch to eat in our classroom. Plus, that meant that *I* had to stay in my room at lunch to babysit said child. Ugh.
The biggest deal to my students was a phone call/email to the parents. Phone calls didn't really work because I had no time to call and the parents had no time to talk. Email was better- the child could not intercept that. ;-)0 -

oops, you are right. I didn't notice that. It is 12 packs of pencils (10 in a pack). The paper has to come form the schools supplier, so I have no control over those prices. I thought it was interesting that I can buy any scientific calculator I want (ranging from $15 to almost $100) but I have to buy super expensive paper). I thought the differences between the grades was a little odd. My 9th grader actually cost less than my 7th grader and the same for my 5th and 4th graders. Maybe because I didn't add in individual class lists for things like science class and P.E., Band and such (I don't have those lists available). Anyways, it was interesting.

I would also like to state for the record.. LOL.. that I did a school supply drive a couple of years ago for my sons class where I worked and each employee donated quite a bit of supplies for my sons teacher and classroom. I do buy everything on the school supply list, with the exception of the band aids this year, but after reading what HKMURPHY83 posted I will most likely send some in, just because I see where she is coming from.

My kids needed bandaids in 4K. Besides the obvious, it was used when they learned the letter B...everyone got bandaids!

Here's the thing...I don't care what the reward is - be it candy, stickers or whatever...I'm hung up on the fact that kids are being rewarded for doing what they SHOULD be doing anyways.
And incentive for being good? I'm pretty sure keeping my name off of the chalkboard was incentive enough for me, cuz I knew if I got any check marks after my name (check marks were issued for each "bad" instance), there would be no recess for me. So what motivated me to behave? Wanting to spare myself from the embarassement of having to stay in at recess, or having my name on the chalkboard for the whole class to see.
Then blame parents, not teachers. When kids grow up with no limits and no consequences, a teacher cannot magically change his/her behavior and life outlook overnight. Do you actually think teachers WANT to have to bribe kids to get them to behave?
Kids who are raised with no consequences at home have very little real consequences at school. They are not embarrassed to have their name written on the board - they think it's funny and/or are proud of it. The number one threat for me as a kid was having a teacher call my mom. Nowadays, if you call a parent to report a child's misbehavior, you are almost just as likely to get chewed out by the parent for not being a "good enough" teacher to handle their brat of a child. You're pretty limited as to what you can take away at school. Rewards are a last but necessary resort, unfortunately.
Oh, I do blame the parents too, don't get me wrong. I was just floored to see that teachers have to resort to a "rewards" program just to get kids to behave. I don't pretend to have all the answers, today's society is royally messed up. I can't believe what kids are allowed to get away with these days. My biggest pet peeve is when you go to a restaurant and see kids running around and being obnoxious and the parents are just oblivious and ignore them. Unless we're sitting at Chuck E. Cheese or McDonald's, get a handle on your kid and make them behave or leave! But I digress...
For the record, I have a lot of respect for teachers. I know I couldn't do it. I don't for one second think it's an easy job. It's just unfortunate that they have to resort to rewards programs to get kids to learn.
This thread just reinforces for me how lucky we are to have access to a very cheap and very good private school. For 2 kids, our tuition is just over $400 for the year total. The teachers not only discipline the kids and have no problem doing it, but also call out the parents too!
We do have some community school supplies like kleenex, paper towel and wipes. We gladly provide those. We also gladly provide extra supplies to the classroom and other kids when we can. I don't like seeing the bag of candy on the back to school list. I just don't want the teacher making daily decisions on the junk food my kids are eating. I don't mind classroom parties or parents bringing in cake or baked goods, etc. for special occasions either though and I think it is ridiculous that there are schools banning that stuff too.
Oh - and we have bought beer and wine for the teachers and principal too!0 -
amazing how different school are. it's $100 dollars per sport in my sons school. Plus he has to purchase the gym uniform and there are fees for certain classes as well as fees for many of the clubs. While there is no 'fee' for band that is required for him to be in it, there is the book i have to buy, the concert uniform, the music stand, the upkeep of the instrument, reeds, and "donations" so the guest conductors and instructions can come teach once a month. There is also no transportation provided unless the concert/game/activity is over a certain number of miles away. The money for that bus is raised by the PTO, the the Music association, through the activity fees collected and through other fundraisers run by various departments and the school itself.As a teacher of an extra curricular class (choir), I cannot collect fees from my student.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, today's society is royally messed up. I can't believe what kids are allowed to get away with these days. My biggest pet peeve is when you go to a restaurant and see kids running around and being obnoxious and the parents are just oblivious and ignore them. Unless we're sitting at Chuck E. Cheese or McDonald's, get a handle on your kid and make them behave or leave! But I digress...
For the record, I have a lot of respect for teachers. I know I couldn't do it. I don't for one second think it's an easy job. It's just unfortunate that they have to resort to rewards programs to get kids to learn.
Wow.. i didn't know giving out candy or stickers or something to reinforce good behavior was a bad thing? Although I do agree that it starts at home. The teachers don't stand a chance if the kids parent's don't expect good behavior. If a teacher told my son lunch is on them if he gets straight As in his class, I guarantee that my son would get straight As.
Incentive to do well is a good thing. And it follows us through our adult life. You get commission or promotion opportunities or raises or a Christmas bonus or whatever else they offer you, if you do your job well. If there was no incentive offered most people would do the bare minimum just to keep their job. That is true whether a child is raised that way or not. And you *do* offer your child incentives to behave well whether you think you do or not. You are not going to take a misbehaving child out for ice cream are you? So good behavior = ice cream. That is how the child will see it and unless you take them out for ice cream whether the behavior is good or bad, that is how it is.0 -
amazing how different school are. it's $100 dollars per sport in my sons school. Plus he has to purchase the gym uniform and there are fees for certain classes as well as fees for many of the clubs. While there is no 'fee' for band that is required for him to be in it, there is the book i have to buy, the concert uniform, the music stand, the upkeep of the instrument, reeds, and "donations" so the guest conductors and instructions can come teach once a month. There is also no transportation provided unless the concert/game/activity is over a certain number of miles away. The money for that bus is raised by the PTO, the the Music association, through the activity fees collected and through other fundraisers run by various departments and the school itself.As a teacher of an extra curricular class (choir), I cannot collect fees from my student.

They can't collect fees for choir.. my school collects fees for it.. If i don't pay the above money my son isn't allowed to participate. what did I miss?
As a teacher of said extra curricular activity, the TEACHER can't collect fees, doesn't say anything about the school.
