The teacher asked for a bag of candy. Of all things, right?

My kid's gotten so many cavities since starting school last year, I'm tempted to send the school his dental bills. All the sugary snacks and gooey treats at birthday parties are ridiculous. The candy will be used as incentives for the children, and while I can understand how useful that may be to a teacher, there's got to be a better way.

Refuse. They can't make you do it.

If you feel awkward doing that, make arrangements to bring in an alternative snack that may be less sugary if you feel it inappropriate.

Not buying things that are specifically requested by teachers before the start of the school year is often a great way to get your kid noticed for the wrong reasons. I know because this happened to me when I was in school. My mom didn't have a lot of money and didn't think it was important to buy composition notebooks instead of the cheapest ones we could find (when they were requested by teachers)... and *I* got in trouble for not having the right supplies. And yes... teachers can really be THAT cruel and unrelenting, even about a bag of candy or the type of notebook you use.

I don't think they can get away with that anymore.. the middle schools my son attended as well as the elementary schools had a supply closet full of supplies for the kids, that were donated by the community. So if a child didn't have something they could go to the office and get it all on their own and no one would know. My son actually received a book bag from his, because his broke and he didn't tell me, so they gave him one.
  • Wow, I guess I'm in the minority in thinking this is not a big deal. Eh, not surprised or worried. That said, two things:

    1. Not buying supplies because of other jerk parents makes you a jerk too, just a different kind of jerk.

    2. This is a parent thread and I was coming back expecting a meltdown of Cafemom proportions. MFP I am disappoint.

I agree with you! I don't think it's that big of a deal either *shrugs*.
  • I was never bribed in school, and I don't believe kids need that. Perhaps some toys for the pre-school class but never "here's a chocolate bar since you learned how to count to 5"

How will those kids get through college? There's no one handing out cake after every exam...

Anyway, it sends the wrong message. I would offer some kleenex.

Also why does the school hold birthday parties!?
