I'm thinking of all of you who are struggling with health/work/family issues, and holding in my heart those who have had losses and sad anniversaries.
I've had a few issues of my own but right now I'm delighted to be back where I belong, if only temporarily. Husband was to give a lecture in Longyearbyen and I went along for the ride. This is the week when they celebrate the return of the sun (the official date isn't actually until tomorrow). It's a glorious time of year - provided the skies are clear.
The day we arrived they were NOT clear. Our plane had to circle for an hour waiting for the clouds to dissipate enough for us to land. Luckily, there was a brief opening and the pilot immediately slammed the plane to the runway. Otherwise we would have had to fly back to the mainland and try again the next day.
But yesterday the skies were clear. We went for a pleasant walk up the mountainside east of town and I captured these pics.
First, looking north across Adventfjorden to Hjortfjellet and Adventtoppen, two of the mountain profiles that everyone who has lived in Longyearbyen has engraved on their hearts.
Next, looking west down over the center of town. The slats in the foreground are part of the snow fence erected after the avalanche in 2015, when two people were killed. The rock wall below it is a snow barrier that was completed last summer. I haven't seen it before.
Last, a view to the northwest, with the house we lived in for ten years right in the center. The day I took these pictures was the first time in an entire year that I saw the view all the way across Isfjorden, to the mountains on the other side, 50 miles away. That sight hit me right in the solar plexus. I wasn't aware how much I've missed it.
That's enough pictures for now. I'll be back with more later on.
/Penny, inordinately happy to be back at the

Pip-good to see you up and about. Those post surgical strolls are important for our recovery.
Penny-beautiful pictures. I have a much better appreciation of the North Pole after you sharing your life there.
Tracey-glad you got to spend time with your grand. She sounds delightful.
Thunder storms work me early this morning. Spring is indeed on the way. Saturday and Sunday had some teasingly warm weather. We will be in 40s-50s most of the week now, but not bad for March here.
Had quite a bit of inflammation from my work on Saturday-pulling out nails, etc., gets arthritis kicking in. Drank fluids and a couple of cups of ginger/tumeric tea. Fingers don't feel quite like sausages this am. Middle joint on right thumb has popped out quite a bit-it usually goes back down. Strange thing.
Have taken my weekly fosomax-can have coffee in about 15 minutes-off to shower while waiting.
Take care all,

My heart hurts for her ,but there isnt much i can do..5 -
(((PIP)))) I can relate to wanting pictures. You seem like a "bite out of life" sort of person and I think you have everything on your side to heal well.
HEATHER Wow, I don't think I could bear so much drama at this age! I hope she fares better in her next steps and visits. What French film did you watch? Nice about the tai chi men! maybe it was a (men's) class? Very glad your connection is safely out of Ukraine.
Had to skim again today. Off to work and lots of appointments, prep work today.
It's cold and I'm not enjoying it!
Have to skim cause impossible to read all, and tomorrow there will be another 5 pages!
Wishing you all good health.3 -
tracked these past days.
almost zero movement yesterday (3,000 Steps! and nothing else).
not a great day but oh well.
today is full of work etc w appointments outside home from 9am to 8pm...
so just in little steps from here to there I get in quite a few...3700 so far but need to go to X and then to Y and then back home. Teaching is not as active as say waiting tables or building houses, but not like sitting at a desk all day either...
bonne journée !4 -

She only just had the baby, didn't she? Can she take a course in something so that when her mat leave is up, she has the skill set to work at home? Mat leave here is a year, I think, so if it is similar there, she's got time to get, for example, a childcare certificate.

I don't think labour laws allow people to work 6 days a week unless they are paid overtime or given time off in lieu. The maximum a person can work is 38 hours (unless overtime/toil)
https://www.fairwork.gov.au/employment-conditions/hours-of-work-breaks-and-rosters/hours-of-work
She should contact the fairwork ombudsman or whatever the department is called there to talk about what she's entitled to.
Wouldn't she have checked into these things before getting pregnant?
As for working from home ... there's childcare. Some here do that.
Or a music teacher.
Or a massage therapist.
For a couple years, I worked for Canada Post "from home". They delivered a stack of fliers to me at home, I collated them and delivered them to people's homes on the weekends.
She could check into election positions - sometimes people are hired to "stuff envelopes" for mailings.
If she's a good website designer, that can be done from home.
I work from home occasionally -- I'm in databases.

Good morning! Happy Monday!
Machka- Love what you are doing with your patio/oasis area!
Tracey- Michaela! What a doll! I need her to come here and help me "broom" every day!
Pip- You look fabulous!
Allie- What a crappy thing for your daughter's employers to spring on her right before she is ready to head back to work! They want her to work 6 days a week and it is still part time? PLUS pay back 25 % of her insurance? Oh no! I would be getting a lawyer on the "pay back" part of their plan. That does NOT sound legal to me. At home jobs. A lot of places are hiring that way. Amazon, medical transcription, Disney vacations, many travel agencies work that way, now. Have her check Indeed.
Heather- Wowsa! Sounds like your friend had a time of it! You must be her "stability" person. Good on you, for the run! I bet that felt good.
Penny- Beautiful pics! I bet it felt good to be back, if only for a little while.
Kids here. gotta fly ttfn xoxoxo KJ2 -

KJ et al - I didn't use to be my friend L's stable person. My relationship with her was equally volatile and intense. Drink was usually involved. My life is totally different now and I am happy to be her friend at arm's length. I would not have her to stay, for example. Drama is not my bag any more. She has a friend with her at the moment.
Penny - Your pics made me feel very nostalgic. Miss Longyearbyen and I miss you.
I'm in a strange twilight world at the moment. Can't go out much because we are isolating before the cruise. Trying to run down food, wash everything, buy online everything we need. Time has stopped.
This morning I was reading through old letters from the man I am writing about. So much that I don't remember, or got confused. In my head it was much less complicated! Made me thoughtful. He was very perceptive about me. Let's just say, I was a very mixed-up kid. I would not say I am wisdom incarnate nowadays, but I have come a long way.
I would like to find out if he has died and when. Most sites charge for the info, or want you to register at the least. I'm not sure why it's so difficult. He would be 82ish now.
Anyway, it's a humbling experience. But, if I'd known better, I'd have done better.

Tracey, I would so LOVE to unplug from the world. Been thinking about that a lot lately. Maybe this summer sometime.

BIG NEWS! I may be going home today. Will have to go on blood thinner shots, then pills, but oh well.17

Did a Cathe Friedrich DVD today then walked on the treadmill a bit. After exercise went to the Dollar Store since I want to try their popcorn. No formal exercise tomorrow since SpaceX is scheduled to launch at 7, then Safelite will be here to replace my windshield at 8, then we’re leaving around 11:30 to meet up with my cousin
Penny – so glad you popped in. Keep posting those pics, they are absolutely wonderful
pip – That’s wonderful! When you get home, take it easy, at least at first. I know that’s going to be hard for you.
Got good news today. Jess will be doing her residency at NCState. That’s the first school she listed as wanting. The bad news is that it’s a 3 year program. Which means she’ll be 40 by the time she’s finished. But she’s achieving her dream!!! I’m so happy for her I can just burst.

Mindful March

So pooped from class yesterday that I slept through the night, 8 straight hours. Usually I sleep 5, then wake 3 then sleep another 2. Go figure.
Lisa what an appropriate poem for Ash Wednesday. LOVED the geek joke.
Michele, thanks. Not even sure I’ll go for my license, just something I’m toying with, to stir up the tapioca between my ears.
Carla 41 years and still getting along, well done!
Rebecca yours to pip. Amen!
Tracey “…not a little girl, I’m an artist” Hoo boy, Your daughter is going to have her hands FULL.
Penny Is there any reason why you and your DH could not return to Longyearbyen permanently? The longing in your voice is palpable.
Allie, maybe its time for Tracy to explore other companies? Good help is hard to find, and it doesn’t sound like her current company is being reasonable (6 days hardly sounds part time to me…)
Machka alas your Australian labor laws are much more compassionate than those here in the US. Most states are “at will” means the companies can do/require whatever they want and the employees choices are, do what the company wants or find another job. Yes, technically, most corporations must pay (or offer inlieu time off) at a rate of time and a half for all hours worked over 40 per week, but I think Tracy is asking to work fewer than 8 hours per day. This also accounts for the change in insurance cost, as she’ll no longer be a full time employee. As for maternity leave, employers have to let employees return to their jobs after up to 12 weeks of absence, but they don’t have to pay them for the time off. Many employers do offer paid time off but this is a benefit entirely the employer’s choice.
Heather “If I’d known better…” reminds me of the saying “Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgement.”
Pip having Yogi’s bear toy for company and comfort made me mist up. Gentle ((hugs)).
Penny wish I’d read your post before writing the above tome to Machka
Katla so very very disappointed about the puppy visit, but your DH’s health comes first. If the breeder can’t understand that…
Lighter, lovelies!

Allie my daughter is a medical insurance coder. They all generally work from home. It's computer work. It is a 6-9 month school program that can be done on line. After she gets a job there are other certificates that she can get to increase pay and her value as a coder. My daughter's company paid for her to get other certificates. And gave her a couple of nice raises.7
