I had 2.5 glasses of wine last night. One was a big pour from wine night at work, and the other was the glass of wine my husband had waiting for me when I got home.
I slept terribly last night and have a big headache, but I honestly think it’s from my 2nd shingles shot yesterday. Its a different type of headache than a hangover headache. I was up all night feeling feverish so as you can imagine I am moving slowly today. Coffee definitely helps! But I’m going to take it easy.6 -
@Womona Good on you for getting the Shingrix series. I felt the 2nd shot more than the first. Hope it's over fast!
@lmlmrn I'm impressed with your homesteading, too! One summer I became aware of shrubs. Intellectually, it sounds like the sort of thing I would LOVE. I saved all the scraps of all the fruits and experimented with different proportions. The refrigerator looked like a science experiment. Alas, in the end, I reluctantly had to conclude that I do not love shrubs. I think my breaking point is they require a lot of sugar for the chemical process and sweeteners don't achieve the same effect. In the end they just weren't worth the calories to me.
I have been enjoying my Lyres "vermouth" and "Compari," though. I think they have been in my refrigerator longer than the 6 week after opening "best by," so I am making more of an effort and find them really pleasant just with soda and a big piece of orange or grapefruit zest. The Monday gin was expensive and nice but too subtle. The zero proof tequila was super inventive but also expensive at $25 per bottle. I would be tempted to get that one again.
Happy Friday, all!4 -
Hi All, I read your board all the time though I don’t drink at all anymore. I stopped for health reasons (interactions with medicines I was on, then to lose the weight I had gained from those medicines, and now why start again) but I really enjoy your tips on NA drink options (and also gardening and cooking!)
The shrubs comment made me want to share that I found this company called acid league - they make “living vinegars” which are amazing for cooking and also for 1 or 2 drops AT MOST in a cocktail to give it an adult sort of flavor, but they also make beverages that are marketed as wine alternatives that are based on shrubs and teas etc. with all sorts of flavors you would expect in a wine. I hate NA wines for the most part, but these don’t try to pretend to really be wines, but they work with food if that makes any senses. Anyway …. Thought I’d share. You all seem to have a great community going, and I hope you don’t mind passive readers like me enjoying your tips and learning from your experiences.
EtA: The NA drink options are expensive, but I find the wine ones match up with the price of wine somehow and have fewer calories and are more of a direct replacement if I find one I like (which is a big if, but there are a few)6 -
Thank you do much for throwing that in the mix, @Sinisterbarbie1! Gonna check that out. Totally understand (and agree) about being interesting on it's own without trying to be what it's not.3

How long does it take you to drive there from Houston?
Houston to New Orleans is about 5-6 hrs but we took an alternative route closer to the coast and bayous going over to view areas we've not been to in a very long time so the drive over was 7 hrs and then the return trip was 5 hrs. It was a fun weekend and we hope to go to French Quarter Fest again in the future.
My favorite food we ate was a cajun seafood eggroll at Cafe Dauphine that was delicious. We bought it on Friday. Saturday we went back to the booth but the line had about 80 people in it ... obviously popular. So we skipped and found other yummy things to eat Jack Dempsey's soft shell crab poboy, Koz's smoked redfish wonton and roast beef debris cheese fries, Jacques-Imo's shrimp & alligator sausage cheesecake (savory not sweet), Paella Nola's paella. Things I did not finish because they were just so so ... Patton's crawfish beignets and The Bower's crawfish bread pudding w/ ettoufee sauce.
Festival ends around 7pm each evening. We made reservations at one of our favorite restaurants Friday night Peche Seafood Grill and then slipped into Cochon Butcher Saturday night which are both in the Warehouse District. So tons of yummy food ... which did show up on the scale Monday morning. But the scale went back down whew!

The 2nd shingles shot was rough on me last year as well. But so glad to have it behind me! Congrats on taking care of yourself and getting the vaccine.3 -
My usual goal, 16-20AF days for the month. Diary style.
I had 21AF days for March, but it was a longer month.
My reason for drinking less is for weight loss.
Tuesday April 26 - 2 drinks. 3 was always my norm, but over this past year it has changed to 2. Less frequent days of drinks must equal less tolerance. I am always happy to see my 16, I expect to exceed that a bit for this month. Planned AF Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesday April 27 - AF - Planned drinks Friday before, during, and or after the theatre. Going to see "Tuesdays with Morrie".
Thursday April 28 - AF - That was a tough one! I worked for hours and hours on getting my sugar snap pea garden going, and totally felt like drinks after. I had to do the 6 minute wait many many times. As usual, I post the next morning when I put my weight into the other forums. This morning, Kimberley BC (1/2 hour up the mountain from me) won BC's best small town : - ) @globalhiker will be there in 6 weeks : - )
Planned drinks Friday, planned AF Saturday.
Rolling total: 18AF day out of 28 days3 -
Good on you for hanging tough, Dawn. Your tenacity is encouraging.4

HELLO!!!! (waving to everyone) remember me?
Returned home Wednesday afternoon. Unpacked, watered plants then crashed and burned for a along nap(sleep).
No rest on plane from Vegas to Boston with the young 30 something female thrashing and flopping in her window seat like a fish out of water (I was in center seat).
When she asked to get out to use the bathroom I told her to find an empty seat some place else because "YOU ARE THE FLIGHT PASSENGER FROM H3LL". She did not return.
Quick run down of trip -> EXCELLENT
Experiences -> SUPREB
Food -> Kept healthly 80% of time. One huge dinner Saturday night on our 9th wedding anniversary
Sun/pool -> Got a light tan, no burning of skin. Mama can still rock two piece swimwear.
Drinks ( I know ya'll been waiting for this one ) -> 4/four alcohol drinks during a 6 day Vegas vacation 👍
Regrets -> 00
Last day of the month tomorrow, keep an eye open for when I post the link for our upcoming MAY 2022 LESS ALCOHOL THREAD.
Missed you all

@lmlmrn my answer to your question about "do I think my increase in running has helped to curb the wine devil"...is a really great question and my thinking is this- yes, the running helped me a ton- but in reality it was the side-benefit from the running - the relaxation effect - and for others it could be yoga or dancing or swimming or singing or whatever brings them stress-relief.
My lessons learned is that I had too much work, not enough play, way too much stress. Imbalance.
Human body reacts by sending us into the "normal" stress-protection mode to over-eat and over-drink. This is the cycle I have been living over and over and over again.
I feel like (at least for me) the "solution" is fully letting "go" of the problem and re-focusing towards living relaxed, less stressed and happy...and how to make the people around me feel that way as well.7 -
GOOD MORNING (USA/EST)
How did this month fly by so quickly?
I want to thank everyone for joining in or following us on our less alcohol April 2022 journey this month.
If you know our routine, we create a new thread every month, to reset, recharge and define our upcoming goals.
So, hope to see both familiar and NEW MFP members on the May 2022 thread.

April was not good on the "drink less" front. Whoa. Especially last week- 3 days with 3+ drinks. It's wine under the bridge so what to do but reset in May.
I'll add this, since it's a calorie counting site. I've been maintaining my weight in the middle of my 5 lb "maintenance range" since the year end holidays. At the beginning of April I decided to drop 2 pounds. Nothing remarkable there. I would normally aim for 250cal daily deficit for 0.5 lb/wk. The thing that was different, though, is I decided to try it with an even smaller deficit. When the pandemic started, the whole family or whoever was here for dinner would take an "apre stroll" around the block after dinner. It only works with daylight savings. From a tracking perspective, I just lumped it in with "daily activity" without counting it as exercise because it's slow and short, just over a mile. When April started and I was looking at the numbers, I realized I might be able to lose 2 pounds with an even smaller deficit if I was mindful to keep non-exercise activity up, and it worked!
There is no way I could consistently create such a slim deficit without calorie counting. For years I erratically bounced between overeating and over restricting to maintain. Intuitively, I eat a little more than I need. And when I cut back, I cut too hard to ensure there was a deficit at all. Calorie counting takes out the guesswork (i.e. consistently wrong guesses). This was the most painless 2lb "course correction" I've probably ever done. I've got family members who think calorie counting is a little disordered. They are probably right, but it is the least disordered I've been so far. Cheers for the online tools that make it painless. :drinker:3 -

Just a quick fly by to all!
Kitchen sink is down for the count along with the dishwasher LOL which lead to eating out, which lead to the 2 tasty beers I had for lunch/dinner. Plumber will be here on Monday. There is a clog some where deep down LOL. Lye and a snake could not find it yet the sink drains so slow that the dishwasher can't run......
So tomorrow we are going to play camping in my kitchen and wash up in the 'kitchen alternative' ...the bathtub with buckets.5 -
@Sinisterbarbie1 thanks for the NA wine rec! The other flavorings looks super good too, I’ve ordered the wine sampler and the fish and mushroom sauces. Really bummed the allium one is sold out!3

Saturday April 30 - AF - Very windy day, didn't do anything in the garden.
Monthly total: 19AF day out of 30 days3 -
Finished April well.
Goals remain 2 days AF / wk and stay under 20 UK units.
Last week (I run Mon - Sun) 3 days Af and 17.6 units.
That makes 11 AF days in April and an average of 19 units per week. It’s still more than guidance but a lot less than before I was tracking it.
See you all on the May thread.3
