WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2022

Hi all I am Pam, I am 51 and new to MFP. Looking to connect with people who understand the challenges of being a 50+ woman trying to lose weight. I’ve gained 30 lbs over the last 8-10 years and really want to get some of it off and be comfortable in my skin again!
Hi ... tell us a little about yourself.0 -
I keep my phone on the nightstand next to my bed overnight for several reasons. I use it as a light to find my way to the bathroom, read my kindle book if I can't sleep and for a few minutes after taking the dogs out for their middle of the night walk, and as my alarm to wake me up. I keep it on silent so I won't be bothered by notifications.
I also keep my phone on the nightstand next to my bed overnight. I started doing that when my husband was in hospital, in case they needed to call me in the middle of the night. But it's my alarm in the morning now. So much more convenient than those old radio alarm clocks! On the rare occasions I wake up in the middle of the night, I use it to read a bit.
We have a battery-powered motion detecting light in the bathroom. Cost me $5 and uses rechargeable batteries. It's great!

I did my dumbbells! Yay!
And I rode Henry today. Yay! I'm lucky to ride in an indoor arena so a gentle rain isn't a problem. My seat is still wobbly. I wonder if the lunges in my yoga will help my seat. My knee was okay for riding. It is just a little weak, so I have to be careful not to injure it.
Horn worms as pets? My preference is a pet that is warm and fluffy and affectionate. Even if they do barf on the floor once in awhile. I'm looking at you, Teddy boo!

Favourite Indoor Hobbies???
Lately, I've been colouring up a storm. I use pens which give me a vibrant colour. I never thought I'd get into this, but it relaxes me, relaxes my brain.
I also dabble in photography, playing the piano (a "new again" thing for me), and I read as much as I can.

Read and caught up. Trying not to type too much to give my arm a break.
Finished my daughters gift at ceramics tonight. I’ll have to log in on a computer to get it uploaded. I still can’t post a pic from my iPhone. I wish they would fix that.

Add me to the list of those who keep their phone on the nightstand beside my bed.0

I wonder why a pet store sells those? We have issues with them too. It's a battle at our house with the Mister and his tomato plants. One year it was similar to Bill Murray's character and the gopher in Caddyshack. I found it entertaining.

Had the best day! Chiro said knee x-rays looked better than hers, no bone on bone. Will reassess after MRI and develop quad strengthening exercise regime. Was early to meet T for lunch so took a little stroll on the boardwalk where I ran into the dog trainer who got Tumble through Canine Good Citizen and the original T’ai Chi teacher. Huge hugs held extra long all around. Lots of smiles and laughter. Delicious Thai lunch with T, where we ran into T’ai Chi couple, more hugs, more smiles, more laughter, then lovely stroll in Azalea Park. Finished up with finding several things I needed at Grocery Outlet at 1/3 the price of Freddie’s. Joe fed the dogs while I crashed. Knee achy but so worth it.
Thanks to all for the prayers for our nephew.
Heather ((hugs)) for Johnny. Hope he dressed warmly and comes home to hot stew soon!
Annie ((hugs))
Allie sure hope Myles doesn’t get it. Relish your rest, you’ve earned it. Glad Carmine is quarantining due being exposed to her dad’s Covid.
Lisa Kindle, hah!
Betsy ((hugs held extra extra long))
Machka  that view! And your beautiful colorings.
Beth Matzoh Roca is like Debbie’s Christmas Crack: butter, brown sugar, chocolate and nuts on Matzoh. This chef calls in “Matzoh Crack” and uses pecans but I first tasted it as Matzoh Roca, a name I like better, with toasted almonds. https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/chocolate-toffee-matzo-crack.html
Tina I recently bought a turntable from Amazon that has the ability to play cassettes and CDs. Intended to digitize some favorite vinyl but haven’t gotten a “round tuit” yet. So sorry your mister hurt you. ((hugs))
Rita bone spur in sinuses? :noway: Oh no!
Vicki that is some wind. Snuggle in and sleep to your heart’s content.
Katla I am so with you about the Voltaren, it has been a real help with my knee, and even helps the hands.
Debbie safe travels and best wishes for a successful outing with your DH. Hornworms… YUCK!
Michele I think you’re right about Covid being with us always like the cold and flu. I’ll continue to mask in grocery stores, and get most of my socializing out of doors.
Welcome @Phverica1 Pam! This is a great group for support, wisdom, friendship.
Barbie hooray for warm sunny yardwork days… and naps!
Indoor hobbies, hmm, mfp?
iPhone overnights on charger in bathroom, on silent for same reason as Barbie.
Have two emergency, battery-operated lights, one in the man cave and one by my side of the bed. When power goes out, they light up.

Katia-I find the monitoring blood sugar with external devices to be fascinating. I don’t have blood sugar issues, but my husband had diabetes. He hated the constant poking.
Allie-sorry to hear about SIL and Covid. Please keep checking yourself-you spend a lot of time with the family.
Heather-two deaths the same day is strange, but things do happen that way. It is good aunt was spared that pain.
Machka-interesting dream.
Annie-it is hard for couples to see one of them deteriorate. While we were not as old as your parents, in his 50’s my husband became much older than me-even though I was only one year younger. Everyone thought he was much older. When he died at 61 he looked and moved much more like someone in their 70’s (and not an active person if you know what I mean).
Barbara Southern Oregon-great news on the knees. I’m happy my knees seem to be decent (hips both were full of arthritis and my feet have their fair share).
Booster shot-I plan on getting booster #2 next month. I had #1 in November and I think I read you should have 6 months between them.
Planning on leaving work at lunch today (have some overtime from last week I can flex). Want to pick up a couple of jackets for grandkids coming in from Arizona next week. It will be very chilly here compared to what they are used to. Will also look for shoes that new orthotics will fit in (can't get insole out of all of mine).
Take care all,

Morning ladies
Alfie woke me up to eat and now is snuggled back under the covers lol
Yes I am extra careful. Im more worried about Tracy than anyone else..especially because she is without insurance right now.
Chalk me up to another one who keeps the phone on the bedside table... i have a flat charger so it charges overnight and is there if I need it..,
1 -
Heather - I had to go back and find your post where you said your DH's aunt and cousin died. I just totally missed that one. Please pass on our condolences to him. Did you know her well?
Ginny - Speaking of orthotics, I just ordered a pair of house shoes, basically a Crocs knock-off, so I can wear them around the house all day instead of just the socks that I'm wearing now. I think my right foot's arch is beginning to flatten and that's what is throwing off my knee. That's the one they replaced a few years back, and really don't want them to have to go back in and fix it.
Machka - Love the colors you've chosen for all of your flowers and think it's absolutely beautiful.
Regarding the cellphone on the nightstand, both Corey and I leave ours as far away from the bedroom as possible. Phone calls in the middle of the night give me palpitations. Corey has a little battery clock alarm on his side of the bed, and I wear my Fitbit 24-7 if I want to know what time it is.
Still no prescription sent to the VA pharmacy, and don't want to go on yet another diatribe, so I'll just leave it that I will be making phone calls when they all get to work. I'm so dang tired of having to fight to get them to do their jobs.
It's not a diatribe if you're not cussing.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa

Jake has been very grateful to my dog walking friend who has cut his hair and helped him plant the new tree and helped us take the dogs to grooming and loaned him an occasional garden tool. He's given her a few things that she can't buy for herself and yesterday brought home take out Chinese food for the three of us to eat together. None of us wants to go into a restaurant but we love the food from this restaurant. It was great and there were enough leftovers for supper for each of us. My thank you to her has been the line dance class we do together in the spare room our house. It's much more fun than the class I was teaching because we do only our favorite dances that require no teaching so we dance twice as many dances as a regular class.

Barbara - Soooo happy that you had a jolly day with your friends. Does the heart and spirits good.
DH was fairly close to his aunt. She was a very characterful woman, with great quiet determination and a kind nature. I liked and admired her. She bravely turned up to all family occasions. She never lost her marbles.
Her elder deceased son had lived in Canada for many years and she was still travelling to see him at 90. I met him a couple of times. I did not like him. The brother, her younger son, is a 'friend ' of ours, a very nice man, who has been taking responsibility for his mother for years. He will feel her loss, I know. So will DSIL. She visited often. I texted my love to her yesterday. She was grateful.
I bought a card to send to the younger son today. I don't think DH will go to the funeral. Maybe he will change his mind. He said he was going to email, but I don't know if he has done so.
DH seems to care less and less about keeping in touch and the social niceties. I feel he is getting 'old'. His empathy does not stretch as far as it used to. He is 76. Physically fit, and still compos mentis, but drawing in on himself. His field of interest is shrinking.
I researched yet another lover this morning. Cards, letters, photos. I kept copies of my letters. It made me feel very sad at how badly I behaved. A few tears. Then I rang my friend G.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -

Well, my mom went off to do the blood work for dementia. My dad took her. I hope it goes smoothly without me. She will be late, because she won't believe that she can't get dressed in fifteen minutes anymore. The worst thing about being late is that Dad will drive too fast to get there. I did what I could, but nagging only makes her more stubborn.
Thanks for your sympathies, it helps me feel less alone in this daily struggle.

Friday --
Today was a beautiful day and we picked up a number of garden things. One of the places we stopped was a beekeeping supply shop where we got beekeeping jackets and I got some honey - manuka and wildflower.
Manuka honey is quite strong - really good but has a very strong flavour.
The wildflower honey is very mild and smooth.
The last time we were there, I got creamed leatherwood which is still my favourite.
And the last time we saw our son and daughter-in-law, she gave us a jar of her honey (she has a hive too) and it is blue gum - a flowery flavour.
There was a time when I thought honey came in one flavour.
I'm watching Chocolat this evening.

Hello all! Happy Friday! Welcome new girls!
Michele- I love your alligator! I really hope you find a spot for him in a pool of clover or puddle of violets!
On shrinking- lol I really don't want to shrink. I know I have already, but only by about 1/4 inch. I used to be 5'8"- I now measure 5'7 3/4". I really enjoy(ed) being tallish. My best friend was 6'. We would go out, back in the day, and she is the first tall girl I knew, who really OWNED it. She wore heels, and would tell me, "Tall is great. You wear your heels, walk straight, look people in the eye and walk like you own the place. It is all about intimidation." lol The wisdom of an 18 year old that I have carried with me my whole life. lol I agree with Machka and the others on posture. IF you stand tall, sit tall, you not only make yourself look thinner, you also make yourself look younger and more energetic. IF you slouch; you look like you have given up.
Machka- I don't think I have anything that I do inside that relaxes me. When I was updating my living room and kitchen, I found painting the walls to be extremely relaxing...maybe I need to start a project?
Heather- Sorry to hear about your DH 's losses. My DH has long been anti-social; even with his family. It takes some "pushing" from me to get him to respond or get in touch with people. I always assumed it was a "guy" thing, as many of my friends have also complained of their anti-social spouses. I wouldn't worry much about Johnny; until he begins to push away the grand kids. I know my grands bring out the love and life in my DH. More than anything else. They exhaust him, but he wouldn't miss a call or day with them.
Hornworms- Yep! Lots of people raise their own food for their reptiles/amphibians. When my daughter worked for our local nature center, she would have to go collect them from people/nature to feed the reptiles that they had in their nature center. On a side note: I have had frozen rats/mice in my freezer from time to time.
Well, ladies, I was all ready to jump in here and vent and throw my woes about how crappy I feel and how crappy my vacation has been because of being sick into a spoiler. But reading about your days and replying on a few things has made me feel better and not so focused on my own small problems. I am going to end this with how grateful I am for all of you, how grateful I am for a week off to sleep whenever I need to, drink warm beverages and soup whenever I want, stay in jammies all day if I need to, etc. I am grateful for a hot shower, some tea tree products to make my sinuses feel a little better, make up to put on my face (because I feel better if I don't look sick all day long). I am grateful to know that I will get over this cold. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)7 -
Machka- Chocolat is one of my very favorite movies. I don't own many; but I do own that one. Have you seen 100 Foot Journey? If you like Chocolat; you will like 100 Foot Journey. I love movies with food in them. I find cooking very romantic.0

Happy Friday, ladies!
Haven't been on here for a while but try to skim along and keep up with everyone. Just popping in!
Yesterday it reached 80 at our house here in SW WA State. DH mowed, I got a good start on spraying and weeding. Last year our lawn/gravel driveway was a mess. Partly because DH had good intentions but then was too tired and/or sore to do these jobs when the weather was good. And I didn’t have a clue about some of these lawn maintenance tasks.... didn't think I could do them. That has changed!
For example, I discovered that granular moss killer also does a job on the dandelions that have taken root in our gravel driveway and along the road shoulder. Win!
Last month I dragged out the battery powered Ryobi weed wacker – it’s old but works good enough for our purposes. It’s light enough and I can use it. And last week DH gave me a lesson on running the zero-turn Toro mower. I managed to not crash it, lol, after some practice and cussing, and actually got most of the front yard mowed (DH did the tricky part around the trees and shrubs). Our neighbors got to hear some new variations on the F-bomb theme. Using only the hand controls seemed counter intuitive to me, I kept wanting to use my feet to stomp on a clutch or brake. I’ll get there.
Anyhow, yesterday was a great day and DH agreed we made a good lawn maintenance team. Rain, cold temps and possibility of snow this weekend and into Monday. Yikes!
Vikki – sorry to hear about you having to put your old pup to sleep. I believe you still have one there at your house? Our Rosie is doing fine after losing Sophie last month, but it took a while. Glad we have her and the house isn’t empty. Not sure how she would fare being alone if we were still working though.
Barbara – what’s this, you have brought a Schnauzer into your pack? My condolences, lol. Bossy little sh*ts. 14 pound Rosie wants to take on every dog in the neighborhood and runs around the back yard barking and “yelling” until she gets one or more of the dogs around here yapping. Then, satisfied, she comes into the house for her treat. She could easily get herself into a dog fight if she was around other dogs, or thinks she could.
Spotify – I sometimes listen to podcasts at night when I can’t sleep. I found one called “Relaxing White Noise” – it plays 8 hours of all kinds of soothing sounds. There are dozens and dozens of choices. Waterfall, rainfall, wind….. I’m sleeping a lot better listening to them, now getting from 7 to 8 hours of restful sleep (aside from a couple bathroom breaks. Grrr!)
Garden – most of it is now covered in black plastic, I’m doing all containers this year. Considering straw bale for some of it. But straw has tripled in price – now nearly $14 a bale.
I have a couple dozen teensy tomatoes germinated on the heat mat in the garage. Most of the seeds are from 3 to 6 years old and I’m still getting over 90% germination. I store them in a coffee can in the refrigerator.
DH’s cognitive decline has leveled off and in some cases, has improved a little. I think part of it was depression since his Rheumatoid Arthritis makes him tired and movement painful. Along with some malnutrition (will not eat a variety! No fruits or veggies!) which is being helped with the addition of several vitamins prescribed by his doc and levothyroxine. His appetite is dwindling and he’s losing weight quickly, and he no longer likes Ensure. But he does like milk and now has added ice cream as a dessert. His weight is nearly in the “underweight” category per the BMI. He was once 6’ 2” and he’s now just about eye level with me at 5’ 8 ½”, so I’m guessing he’s lost 3 or 4 inches. Grateful for good days!
Allergies – knock wood, they aren’t hitting me much. If I’m feeling stuffy in the late afternoon, I take half a generic Zyrtec at night (5 mg) and use nasal spray several times a day, either Xlear or Alkalol – quicker than neti pot or using the nasal rinse bottle. I’m also continuing the immune boosting supplements I started a couple years ago when C reared its ugly head – Quercetin, Zinc, Vit C, Vit D and magnesium. My Vit D had dropped below 50 ng last fall. Per my doc, I increased my daily D3 intake from 5,000 to 10,000 IU and added Vit K2. Had it tested a couple weeks ago, it’s up to 62. Most of those who were hospitalized/died from C-19 were found to be Vit D deficient, there’s plenty of research papers supporting that.
With DH’s decreasing appetite and me cooking all kinds of things to try to tempt him, there’s been plenty of food here that I normally don’t eat. But I have been – the cost of food, I refuse to waste any. So I started packing on pounds – especially tummy, and it’s making my hernia surgery scarring (belly button) too painful to wear some of my favorite pants with the increased pressure around my waistline.
So, I am back on Intermittent Fasting, and continue to tweak – think I’ve found a schedule that works for me now. I’ve been able to get, most days, a 16 hour or longer fast if it's comfortable. Basically, while I intend to stop eating at 5 pm, sometimes I can’t help myself and get into cookies and chips up until bedtime. Then, I don’t eat until late morning or early afternoon the next day. I can ignore most hunger pangs. If I get weak or woozy, then the eating window opens.
I don’t have a lot to lose, 8 to 10 pounds at the most.
Before I forget, those of you doing OMAD (one meal a day) or anyone who needs menu suggestions to get more variety in their diet, check out “Window Worthy IF Meals” on Facebook, hosted by Nadia Nigro. She’s keen on eating a minimum of 30 different plants per week as suggested by Tim Spector. Just seeing and reading about her delicious meals has really improved my veggie intake. I need to get a charcuterie board!
Walking - The sun is starting to peek out, and I want to grab a walk between the showers. My walking buddy is out of town for a week - and I'm thoroughly enjoying walking alone, and at my faster "Lanette" speed. I go out on the highway and side roads before there's much traffic. She is getting a knee replacement in May, is bone on bone, so when I walk with her it's well below my usual clip. I know she likes walking in the early mornings, she has a lot going on throughout her day and it works best for her, but I've decided I really need to save that time for myself for my walks and doing early morning lawn chores, and move her to late morning or another time at least for this spring. Even though I don't have as many social events during the day as she does, my needs count too. She's a great friend and we enjoy our time together so will make something work. After her surgery she'll be sidelined for a while.
That’s my quick catchup. Welcome new ladies and Happy Birthday to everyone who’s celebrated another year around the sun!

Hi Pam, welcome!
Hi Lanette, welcome "back".
I use my phone for everything (except work and this) and I also keep it next to my bed. I have it on "do not disturb" at night so I only get calls from the people I have set to "important". But it's my alarm too and my "radio" and "book" and for games. You know, all the things you're not supposed to do before you go to bed. LOL.

In no particular order:
Watercolour painting, drawing, collage, textile crafts, paper crafts, beading, studying Latin/Shakespeare, reading, writing, doing puzzles, dancing, watching TV …..
Mobile phone
I use it for most things. Diary, reminders, etc. I keep in on the desk in my bedroom at night. It’s my morning alarm so it means I have to get up to turn it off. 😝 It’s on ‘Do not disturb’ from 11pm - 7am, so only certain people can get through.2 -
Well im home and exhausted.. not from the vaccination but from hoofing around that store.. i was good. I went with a purpose ,basically got what i needed .no food and skidaddled.. but i got 3- 48 count packs of water that are heavier than all get out and some of the other stuff was heavy.. but i got it in the car,got it out of the car and on a dolly and I will rest for a bit and then put it away a bit later.2

Thanks Carol! I must say, when I was so busy yesterday I didn't even think about eating, plus had a good "tired" last night. This morning, it continues. I just weed wacked another section of the garden, spread black plastic over it and anchored that down with spare chunks of lumber DH has stashed here and there. As I tossed down the last chunk, the showers started.
I think our brains like challenges, mine surely does. After a couple years of being unable to do much outside thanks to my frozen shoulder then hernia, I am rejoicing to be active again after being sidelined.
I'm not too big on planting and tending flowers, but killing weeds gives me great satisfaction. Oh, that and chopping firewood. Got a crate of kindling split this morning, swinging that hatchet with all my might. Put me in a great mood!
Carry on, ladies.
