Another afternoon Treadmill run today, this one was the first leg of a Kilimanjaro summit. Luckily not too steep just yet. I liked the trainer but I doubt I'll finish the series. As it moves on it is basically just very steep hiking. Probably cool views. I guess I could just turn the guidance off and enjoy the video at a runable pace/incline.4 -
those vultures ARE huge and esp when they are spreading their wings (normally to dry them). I was always afraid one was going to poop on me.4
-
Great job on your race @polskagirl01! I love the shirts.
@eleanorhawkins I agree with the others. Just go and see how you feel that day.3 -
@polskagirl01 I'm so glad it sounds like you had a great time at your race. It does sound extreme though and I'm glad your friend told you how to run on the Halda. I love that you concentrated on your "today fitness" and found a way to catch and pass those 6 or 7 people. That sounds like a great strategy. Love the bling too.
@eleanorhawkins I'm sorry the voices got started in your head again. But, like @shanaber said...maybe you can see how you feel this week and then decide when you get there on Sat if you want to give it a go...maybe not to actually "race," but to enjoy the experience. Maybe do like @polskagirl01 and concentrate on your "today fitness/health level" to determine how much you run and how much you walk. Just do what you believe is the right thing for you to do for your health. You want to be around to run it next year. Funny about the dog sitting on your feet until the owner got there. No aggression there for sure.
Glad you had a good run @yirara .
Great running @jane10 ! Congrats on meeting your goal.
Great sprint intervals this morning @shanaber . Funny about the vultures and love the picture.
Aww. Kilimanjaro sounds like a fun run @martaindale .
I haven't posted many of my runs lately, but I have been running when I can and walking when I can't. I thought that I broke my little toe at daycare on Monday, but the swelling is mostly gone already and it isn't blue anymore, even though it does hurt a little every now and again. I think I must have just stubbed it really bad.
I did do a long run on the treadmill today (long for me). I ran 5 miles, doing 4/1 run/walk method. It wasn't too bad, but was slow...as it was supposed to be. (13:41 min/mile) My HR stayed in Zone 2, per the plan, for almost the entire run. I'm pleased with that. That brings my total mileage for the month to 61.5/62 mile goal. Unless something drastic happens, I should meet my goal this month!

@polskagirl01 Great job at your race! It sounds like a tough course.
@eleanorhawkins I agree with everyone else about seeing how you feel that day and running what you can and walking the rest.
It has been a rough week due to work, personal stressors, and weather. I shifted runs around to get them in when I could. Yesterday was a Long Interval Run - 5 min Z1, 5 min Z2, 3x(5min Z4/3 min Z1), 5 min Z1 for 3.31 miles. Today I made up Thursday's Foundation Run (5 min Z1, 35 min Z2, 5 min Z1) for 3.88 miles and followed it up with the scheduled 45 min Z1 run, which ended up being a jog/walk for 2.46 miles.
Total for August: 112.8 miles
Tomorrow is my second 16 mile run, but it has intervals between Z3 and Z2 for 14 miles of it, so I'm a little nervous about how that will go.7 -
@quilteryoyo ouch, hope the toe heals quickly, sounds painful!
@marisap2010 good luck with today's run. Just surviving 16 miles is tough enough without adding intervals to it!
Thanks for the sensibleness, everyone, I need to learn to live in the moment insteadnof having to have things planned in advance all the time 😅5 -
Good morning all!! Happy Sunday!!
My mother and sister are coming to visit later (they're unhealthy A.F. - in the nicest possible way!, so there's some unhealthy takeout and/or dessert in my near immediate future!). So I ran a bit extra. I made a conscientious effort not to look at pace... And it was only as I was nearing the park near my home at the end,did I see that, 'Oohh if I sprint this last half mile, I'll bring it down to under 9:00" '. Sorry guys, I know. I shouldn't have.
Anyways. Beautiful day in London today. I went into the City rather than my usual 'loop'
Tower of London, and Tower Bridge (from the Southbank) (IMO- London is better at night, with the lights on. The Thames is such a dirty looking river. Like sewage colour!) ->

@tarun_yadavA hey, don't bash carbs, carbs are good for runners lol. I thought of you this morning... I went out way too fast because I was feeling good then had to keep telling myself to slow down, then Always came on so I sang along 😅
Don't know whether it was the flat route or whatever but this morning's short run felt gooooood! Thinking of going for another 26km tomorrow to see what happens.8 -

@eleanorhawkins hahaha. Always! Love it!! 😊
(I think that's the only slow-ish song I know all the lyrics too!)
(Also showing my age here! Lol)
PS: agreed RE: carbs. Yes- Beans and rice, or a tomato-ey pasta with loads of veggie...
However... A stuffed crust pizza followed by cheesecake, on the other hand... 😂4 -
@marisap2010 You are doing great following the plan. I hope today's run goes well. If you can't do all of the intervals, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Getting the distance in is probably the most important part of the workout.
@eleanorhawkins I'm working on that too - living the moment. I love a good plan, but they seem to change so much lately that I find myself getting frustrated..and moody. I'm still making plans, but trying to not worry so much when they change and just enjoy whatever comes my way. Glad you had a great run.
Nice run @tarun_yadavA . I often kick at the end, just to see if I can. Enjoy your carbs and family. No harm in that. Beautiful picture. Yummm....cheesecake is one of my favorite foods. LOL

Mmmmm pizza and cheesecake, very jealous lol

Ooohh... You guys in the States. Lucky!
No Cheesecake Factory here in the UK 😭
Those Cinnabon Swirl Cheesecakes tho....
Heaven.3 -
16 miles with speed play - finished. The plan called for .5 mi Z1, 1 mi Z2, 14x(.25 mi Z3, .75 mi Z2), .5 mi Z1.
It wasn't bad, but there were definitely a few of the faster intervals that were not as speedy as they could have been. However, I did finish this 16 mile run 23 minutes faster than the one I did last month, so that was good! I got up early to run while it was still somewhat cool and before the humidity was awful.
Mmm...stuffed crust pizza. Alas, I have none. I did eat some tortilla chips with veggies and cheese a few minutes ago, which isn't the healthiest, but not the worst either. Gotta replenish those calories I just burned!
8 -
@marisap2010 great job getting in that 16 mile run, especially with those fast pace surges. 24 minutes off your last one is huge!
@polskagirl01 way to go on your race! Some of those parts sound really tough. Great job passing so many at the finish 🙂
@eleanorhawkins yep, take it one day at a time and do what you feel you can on the day.
@tarun_yadavA nice running, and go ahead and eat those carbs. Sooo good!4 -

You give them one last marathon!
GU Orange Chews @ mile 18, finished all my water (36 oz) and snitched 4 pears at the end to nosh on for my walk home.
465.33 miles for August so far!
Holy Smokes! I have a chance to reach 500 miles!
One of the newer Tennessee Smoky Barns
I really love old barns! Sunrise is happening behind it.
Tobacco racks waiting for harvest and move to tobacco barns.
This is my favorite place to run! Toby Darden Road, right on the county line, miles of tree canopy, family farms, and nature!
Soybean field, tobacco already harvested in field above. There are 10 smoky barns on the ridge here.
Sea of Fog over the soybean field from yesterday

Does anyone have a training plan that's worked to transition from a run/walk strategy to non-stop running? I have plenty of experience with regular running plans, and obviously know that it's a matter of increasing the run intervals while decreasing the walk (or replacing the walk with slower running, provided you aren't already at your lowest speed 😉)... but something with structure might help me right now. Like how much/how fast to implement those changes?
Next up for me is a road 10k in our city in 3 weeks, then after that I'm (intentionally) not signed up for anything else 😱5 -

@polskagirl01 maybe just good old c25k, or the 10k version? I mean basically what they do is start you out with jntervals that get increasingly longer then disappear, right?
I still use the intervals for my first km or two, then ditch them and take a 30 second walk/water break after each km... but I go back into them for uphill sections. If I remember right I initially just started skipping a walk break when I felt like it.5 -
@AlphaHowls those are some beautiful places to run.
I on the other hand stayed indoors and ran 4 miles on the treadmill as it was really hot outside. Went for a walk earlier around the park with the wife, but we were ready to get back in the truck after 2.5 miles. I guess it's still August, so no real surprise.
5 -
@AlphaHowls That is insane mileage! I can't believe you might hit 500! I love your pictures.
@polskagirl01 I would maybe do the C210K program to work on eliminating walks. I've been trying to run everything except uphills lately.
@Scott6255 Hopefully it will start cooling down for everyone soon. The temps are a little lower here (85 instead of 95), but the humidity just slaps you in the face.6 -

I intended to get up early this morning to beat the heat, but I just couldn't drag myself out of bed. So it was about 8:00 when I finally got out and 79°F feels like 82°F. It wasn't too bad at the start because there was some breeze, but it was 87°F feels like 93°F when I got home and I was really hot. The run was mostly good though. The last mile was tough because of the heat and I ran out of water. But all in all it was good. There were two big dogs that came trotting after me. I was outside a convenience store so I stopped inside and the woman working there distracted them so they didn't follow me when I left. I stopped and gave Lilly/Sunny some carrots and I saw a baby deer and it's mom. I also saw a snake, but it got away before I could get a picture. I think it was a bull snake.
I made pizzas when I got home, but no cheesecake.
I don't know how you get so much mileage on your shoes @AlphaHowls. Mine are just over 400 miles and it is definitely time to replace them Ypu certainly have a beautiful place to run.
7 -
Great run @marisap2010 . AND going 23 min faster than just last month - A-MAZ-ING!
You are amazing @AlphaHowls ! Old barns are one of my favorite things too. They just have so much character - them and old churches. What do they put in the smokey barn? Tobacco? We don't really have that in my area. We just hung it up to dry and then took the leaves off the stalk and packed it up to sale. Those are great pictures. You don't live in TN do you? That road looks like a wonderful place for a run.
@polskagirl01 When I first started running, my goal was to run 30 min without stopping. I found an excellent plan to get me there, but can't seem to find it now. As I recall, as you said, it slowly increased the amount of running and decrease the amount of walk breaks, but it didn't keep increasing them. Just like with distance training, every workout was different and there were cut back weeks which I really liked because they were "easy" and I wasn't sure how that could be. LOL Anyway, I'll try to see if I can find a printed copy that I may have and get a picture for you later this week. I really did like it and it may be too basic for you, but the idea is there and you could modify it for different amounts of time, I would think.
Nice running @scott6255. I preferred the treadmill for my walk today too. Just hot and humid and I didn't want to sweat. LOL
Great running @kgirlhart . Love all the wildlife that you see.

Smoking barns are prolific here in TN/KY farming area. My family raised tobacco, so I am very familiar with them. Yes, I have lived in TN since 2000, longest place I have stayed really, 22 years now.@marisap2010 wrote: »@AlphaHowls That is insane mileage! I can't believe you might hit 500! I love your pictures.

Morning all!
Got in a 7k today.
PS: I have been to TN. Only Knoxville. Loved it!!!
7 -
@AlphaHowls I know that I have probably asked you where you live before. I just don't recall it being TN. Not many people in this area grow tobacco anymore. In my younger years, almost everyone did. My brother and I loved to set it out in the spring. Cutting it, not so much. LOL
Another nice run @tarun_yadavA . Knoxville is about 1.5 hours away from where I live. I'm near Greeneville in E. TN - the home of Andrew Johnson, our 17th president. I think it is a really pretty area.4 -

@quilteryoyo wow! It's such a pretty state! Only had 2 nights when I went last year - so spent it with a friend and just hung out downtown. Breweries, whiskies and BBQ. Loved every second of it! Would love to go back again!3 -
My weekend was spent hiking and camping instead of running and this morning I was too exhausted and sore to get up early and run. Our group of five started our hike on Saturday morning getting a shuttle to our starting point. On Saturday, we hiked a little over 11 miles climbing several mountains with our backpacks weighing 30+ pounds loaded with camping gear, cook stoves, food, water, etc. The weather was sunny and beautiful, but it started raining lightly right before we got to our campsite and continued while we set up camp but then stopped and it turned out to be a nice evening. The only night sounds being heard were the tree frogs and the wind blowing through the tree tops. This was the first time I’ve camped on trail, filtered water to drink and hung my food from a tree to keep it safe from any bears. My ankle did great. I wore my boots rather than my Altra hiking shoes for added stability.
Climbing up Round Bald we stopped to enjoy the view of the mountains and the fog in the valley.
Me on the climb up to Little Hump Mountain.
Looking ahead to, you guessed it, Big Hump Mountain
Views from the top
Our camping spot for the night. Only one other camper there. A young man and his dog from Charlotte, NC.
The trail was rocky in various places. This photo is towards the end of the hike.
@polskagirl01 - Congrats to the kids for starting, finishing and placing in their age groups! That sounds like a tough run up the slag pile/mountain not once but twice! You did great pacing yourself and being able to pass people. Congratulations!
Love the picture of London @tarun_adavA. I have a friend visiting now and have been enjoying her pictures on social media.
Great job on your 16-mile run @marisap2010!
Love the way you give your shoes a marathon send off @AlphaHowls! That scenery is gorgeous and I would love to run there. The smoking barns are an interesting way to cure the tobacco. Like @quilteryoyo, we just hung ours up in the barn and let time cure it.

Another 16 miles this morning to see what happens. I stayed closer to home so less elevation, basically the local rural HM route with 5x the 'fun' loop in the middle (think up a big hill, down the other side, across a (currently dry) stream, up and over a slightly smaller hill). I had decided to try and do my long run today due to complicated schedules at the end of the week and that possible race on Sunday. Woke up to thunder and lightning, which stayed around most of the day. It started to rain on and off after an hour or so which was heaven! Being Monday my phone kept ringing so there were way too many stops to dig it out, by my pace while moving was quicker than last time, despite having to walk the hills.
Now to see whether my stomach approves. I might have inhaled a chocolate ice cream this afternoon.9 -
@Eleanorhawkins I hope your body doesn't rebel this time!
@Teresa502 I love the hiking pictures. Now I want to go to the mountains.
Speaking of which, my husband did suggest I should go to the mountains today... but I biked for 40 minutes and was already tired. Maybe tomorrow. I did get a bunch of work done.
Oh but I found some interesting stuff on my bike ride...
The bright pink tulle ball must've fallen off of yesterday's harvest festival parade, and the little gnome-girl or whatever appears to have been run over by a car and needs cleaned up, but is kind of fun.5 -
I went ahead and created our challenge for September. You can find it here - https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10872687/september-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=16

I am loving all the pictures of the places everyone runs!
@tarun_yadavA - beautiful picture of London. I too like it all lit up after dark.
@AlphaHowls - I am so envious of your beautiful landscape and tree canopied running trail! Fantastic running this month and nice sendoff for your shoes! None of mine have quite that much yet. I think I have one pair with around 600 miles that are still going strong. I am hanging on to them because I don't like the newer model of the same shoe and the model I have is not available anywhere that I have found.
I am not much of a barn aficionado but like @quilteryoyo I love old churches. The ones throughout Europe are just amazing, even in the smallest villages.
@polskagirl01 - I was thinking C2-10K and maybe starting in the middle or so where the intervals are close to what you are currently doing. I keep hoping I will get to where I don't need to walk anymore but right now that isn't happening.
That gnome girl looks like she has a running shoe on. Hopefully she wasn't out for a run when she got run over!
@Teresa502 - what a fantastic hike! So beautiful. How did you like the camping?
@eleanorhawkins - wow you got that long run in and done! Hope your stomach or whatever it was doesn't get angry this time! Maybe the ice cream is just what you needed 😊
All this talk about cheesecake and BBQ has me wanting some (sorry not much of a pizza fan). I think TN BBQ is some of the best anywhere!
Yesterday Hobbes and I went for a short ~3.5 mile walk/hike around a lake with some friends and 2 of their Vizslas. It was fun and the pups had a great time. I took a couple of pictures of the scenery but we didn't take a single picture of the pups.
ETA - PicturesI thought that doing the walk yesterday was the perfect recovery day activity after my SIT run on Saturday. Apparently my legs did not agree. Today is the last day of reasonable temps for the foreseeable future and I really wanted to get in a good run. My legs were not happy, never loosened up and complained the entire time. Even walking the last mile home was an issue. I did however make the 100 mile club again - yay! I have lots to do tomorrow but will fit in a strength session (upper body and core only) and hopefully get a short run on Wednesday to close out the month. We have 'excessive heat' warnings already up and it is supposed to be well over 100F for the next 10 days. Good news though the humidity is finally going down.
For our Run The World team, we are just about at the AZ border. Unfortunately it is going to be brutally hot and dry for the next bit of running across AZ and on to NM as we head over to Dallas. Make sure you are hydrating well!
