@kgirlhart Uneventful runs are good runs. You're doing great. Just to give you a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel, it was 60°F here this morning. Foggy, so really humid, but cool.
@tarun_yadavA Another great run. Be careful with those aches and pains. Do you take a rest day every now and then, or at least a cross training day? Just curious. You do you, but they do seem to be important in preventing injuries.

Hi, you're right. I'm due a rest day soon. Also thinking of adding a weekly swim into my regime.
Doing some bridging and other stretches to target the niggle in my right hammy/glute area.
Might just cut a couple of miles and ease up on the pace a touch too5 -
Today the "plan" said 40-45 minute fartlek run. So I did a 6.5km route, took a little longer than 45 minutes as I honestly walked a lot of the shady parts, and tried to run most of the sunny parts. It was hot out but I felt OK, and a smidge faster overall than recent runs. Then I made lunch, and later fell asleep for a couple hours while listening to a kids' radio show with my son. It feels like a baby step forward, so this is good.
Since we got back from vacation, I've been logging food, aiming for less junk, and set my goal to maintenance instead of losing weight. It might be helping8 -

@polskagirl01 don't hate me for this, but I'm finding that this perimenopause/getting older lark means I really don't tolerate junk food well at all anymore. This is a source of much disappointment to me, as part of my motivation to marathon train was to eat ALL the doughnuts and I haven't managed to have a single one yet So yeah, focusing on less junk may well be helping. Life sucks sometimes.
Also, cut yourself some slack and stop worrying about how fast (or not) you're going. In fact, I would say make a conscious effort to slow down even more. There's nothing wrong with plenty of walk breaks, I'm still using run-walk-run until I warm up and for pretty much all the uphills on medium and long runs. You know you can run fast when you need to (think long-tights-in-heatwave-guy fast) so stop beating yourself up about not forcing yourself to do it all the time :-p
I'm more or less recovered from my scare last week. My legs hate me for making them run again after 2 whole days off but tough. Second attempt at that elusive 26km on Friday... what could possibly go wrong this time? (Jinxed it now for sure)
Now of course I'm looking at my training plan and fretting about having missed miles last week. D'oh!

Hello all - just wanted to pop in and post this link for a virtual 5k this Saturday.
www.Nodelay5k.com
(for whatever reason my embedded link wasn't working. So I guess you will have to copy and paste... Maybe another MFP 'enhancement')
It is a charity run for the In-N-Out Foundation (for abused children) and the Slave 2 Nothing Foundation that is working to eliminate human trafficking and help people with substance abuse. All proceeds go to the foundations and In-N-Out is covering the administration costs. Unfortunately they only mail within the US and I think Canada.
I will be back in a bit to comment some and update my run progress. While not commenting I have been reading and liking the posts.4 -

I know in my head that you're right... 😁
Your "missing miles" won't matter in the overall plan. Last week is over. Don't fret!1 -

I got 6 miles in this morning. It was pretty nice out. There were lots of stars this morning. It was warm, but not bad for August. I didn't see any deer, but I did see a skunk. I'm planning a rest day for tomorrow. I took a couple of vacation days and we are planning to drive over to Ft. Worth to celebrate our anniversary.

@AlphaHowls - I usually get 800+ miles on most of my running shoes and also use my knees as the indicator. I always figured it was because the shoes I wear are very low cushion so there isn't much to compress/wear out.
@rps67 - I gave up on sports bras that I have to take off over my head. For the summer I only use ones that zip in front - so much easier!
@tarun_yadavA - take care of that hamstring/glute niggle and don't let it get chronic. I ended up with a tear and I still do my PT exercises to try and keep it under control.
I am so impressed by those of you preparing for marathons and running 20+ miles in the middle of summer! You are beasts!!
I've been working on getting up and out earlier in the morning with pretty good results until today. I woke up, turned off the alarm, looked at the temperature outside and went back to sleep. It was already getting hot. I still took Hobbes out for a fast walk but stayed as much as we could in the shade. The pavement is getting so hot that I really don't even want him walking on it. When we got home I went to take a cool shower and kept turning the hot water down and the cold up until it dawned on me that the hot water was off and the water was just hot... Really the only cold water is in our fridge. The good news is it is supposed to cool off a little on Friday and over the weekend and maybe Monday too. I am wondering if I should try running all 4 days 😁
I have also gotten back to strength training on my non-running days. It feels so good to be able to lift again even increasing my weights slowly to not re-injure my shoulder. I do have a very judgy trainer watching over me.C'mon - Is that all you got?
He even takes over my mat!

Beautiful dog!!
Thank you - yes, cutting down distance for a bit. And speed. Spending more time on stretches. And targeted Bridging etc.3 -
Dropped down a bit today. 7k. And a bit slower too.

Just a quick update. I am at 69 miles for the month out of 100 plus I would like to do. Still reading up here on everyone but not posting too much as the moment. I think my drive to record runs comes and gos. I did see an armadillo the other morning strolling across the street but it's been so dry and hot here that I really haven't seen many other birds or critturs out. I found some great rechargable lightweight blinking lights to wear when running and it's starting to be dark again in the mornings and school is starting up so trying to be super careful of cars and distracted mom's... LOL.7
-
@quilteryoyo School almost certainly is the cause. It was just so weird seeing so many people because it was sooo quiet all summer. I feel like there are a few times each year where suddenly more runners appear. Just after New Years, right at the beginning of summer (this one never lasts long), then right after school starts. People have such good intentions but life inevitably gets in the way. And I only see the same couple of guys early in the winter. Waking up early to run in the dark AND the cold cuts the numbers quickly!
@eleanorhawkins Yep on the not tolerating junk food as I get older. For me, sugar is especially problematic. I still eat desserts and sweets but my portions have naturally decreased. Too much and it makes me feel almost hung over. And forget donuts. I used to a sweet breakfast but I don’t even want it anymore. Even my oatmeal is barely sweet. So far I am seeing perimenopause as all all headaches (literally and figuratively) and no rewards. When we got home I went to take a cool shower and kept turning the hot water down and the cold up until it dawned on me that the hot water was off and the water was just hot... Really the only cold water is in our fridge.
OMG, yes mine too! Pipes here mostly run through the attic, which is a bajillion degrees in the summer. I take “cold” water showers that are at best lukewarm and are downright hot when you first turn it on. The cold water actually being cold is one of those signs that it’s actually cooling off outside. It’s like, Hey I got to turn on the hot water today!!5 -

Easy 3 miles this morning. Hot and humid. Blah, blah, blah.
I went rock climbing last night after not going for a few weeks. It’s amazing how quickly it gets hard again. I also did my PT. Yay me! I find doing it at the gym before I climb works really well. It’s so hard for me to get myself to do it at home. I also stayed for a yoga class. Not a very restful rest day, but with the taper I had the energy to do it and I could stand to mix in a little yoga. It was a small class so the teacher took requests. We asked for stretching so it wasn’t a hard core class and she hit several spots that needed a good stretch.4 -
5 treadmill miles this evening

Ran 9K today. Struggled. Thought after doing a bit less yesterday and a bit slower, I'd try my luck. Foolish! 🤦 Nope - everything from left biceps (hurt it during weights), to left heel-ball region, to right glute-hammy just plain HURT. Managed it, but it was painful and the slowest I've been awhile. Gonna take a rest day tomorrow - it's my son's 8th birthday. And then I will return doing just 4M jogs for a week.

Poison Ivy + Alpha = pain and suffering!6 -
@alphahowls Did you know there are people who do not respond to poison ivy? I have not tested the theory as an adult but I did not respond as a child and neither did the couple of my brothers who were old enough to be running around in the woods of east TX barefoot with me. We encountered plenty of it and never had so much as an itch. It looks miserable! While I won't press my luck, it does make me feel like I have to be less careful in the woods about avoiding plants.2
-
@tarun_yadavA Sorry to hear you're feeling rough.
I have noticed that you do basically every run within a very tight pace window, at least over the time you've been participating here. You say today was the slowest in a while but it was an average 9:00 pace. Looking back a few weeks your runs are typically in the 8:45-8:50 range. So, technically slower I guess but it's such a minimal difference it almost seems like arguing semantics. In the grand scheme of training paces, those are hardly distinguishable. I also noticed in the screenshots you post here that the runs are routinely tagged hard or max effort. Have you considered purposefully inserting some pace variety into your runs? It doesn't seem like you ever run a truly easy run and let your body recover from the hard effort ones.
I'll drop a couple of short reads here for you to take or leave. There is so much out there from basically every coach and expert extolling the virtues of really slowing down for many of your runs and using higher paces in a targeted way for workouts with a specific purpose. Not only will you be more likely to see improvements, you will avoid burnout and overuse injuries.

We got rain last night! Should be getting more today but it's like the running gods know I would a rain run in this heat. It never rains in the early morning! I am feeling the PT workout from 2 days ago in my hamstrings and calves. Should be worked out pretty well for tomorrow after a couple of recovery runs the last 2 days.
Tomorrow is the culmination of my base building HM plan and the conditions are looking brutal! 7am - 75F, 98% humidity, feels like 81F. 9am - 82F, 84% humidity, feels like 90F. Using our normal dew point I am looking at T+D of about 150-155. I am seriously considering doing the first 8 miles or so outside then transitioning to the treadmill for the last 5 to avoid the worst of the sun. It just doesn't feel like a good idea to do this run completely outside then be wiped out for the rest of the day. Especially not for a long training run. I've never split a long run this way but I think I can make it work if I preselect my run for the treadmill, get my hydration/fuel set up before I leave. Then I can just shed the hydration pack and jump on before my legs decide this run is over. I can do one of the race day marathon runs. Maybe Chicago. Sounds like I've talked myself into making a decision. We'll see how this goes.7 -

Yes! My mother does not respond to it either. This is actually my 3rd bout in my lifetime, once as a child and August 2020 I tangled with it. I did not realize I got into until days later, thinking I had been bitten by some strange bug. Doctor takes one look and says, "You have poison ivy."
My mother usually tackles this beast, but over the last year she has declined significantly. I just have to come to terms with it and do a better job of recognize it sooner.

re: Poison Ivy. I got a REALLY bad case on my lower calves a few years back after an accidental stroll thru it. After trying everything in the book it turned out that the most relief came from using the PINK CALAMINE lotion They even make spray on .......3
-
@martaindale - our water pipes are underground and come up through the cement slab. I have never experienced this hot 'cold' water before but I guess it is an indication of how hot we have been over a longer than normal period.
I did not know that some people don't react to poison ivy. I Amy be one too. We ran all over the fields and forests as a kid and I don't ever remember getting it although one of my brothers did. I also wonder if maybe it wasn't as prevalent in Idaho as it is in other places.
I have to say that I am so amazed that @AlphaHowls can continue to run her HM distances despite suffering with it!
@tarun_yadavA - I also think it is a good practice to mix up different types of runs and paces to prevent burnout and injury.
@SummerSkier - I remember that pink calamine lotion. I think my parents bought it in bulk 😁 I was very fair and sunburn easily as I child and I swear my dad practically drenched me in it to relieve the sunburn pain and itch.
No run for me today. Managed 6 yesterday before we went wine tasting. It is supposed to cool slightly overnight and for a few days so I am planning to run the next 3 days in a row which I haven't done in awhile.8 -

I haven't thought about calamine lotion in forever! My mom used it for all kinds of skin ailments, but I remember it most from dotting it on hundreds of chicken pox with a cotton ball.6 -
So, I came on here and posted earlier this week, but my post seems to be MIA...
I'm not sure where I got my 95 miles run thus far in the month in last weekend's post. I must have been delirious after my 20 miler because that wasn't accurate! At that point it was 71.5 miles. Since then I have a tempo run, a Z1 recovery run (really more of a walk to keep HR down), a foundation run, and then intervals on yesterday. I'm at 83.31 miles now for August.
Hubby's job keeps screwing with his schedule of overseas work, and it looked like he would not be home for the marathon and visit with his family, but he was able to talk with his boss and get it coordinated for him to get home about a week before the trip, so I am super happy about that. I'm really excited for the trip, not only for the marathon but also for a break from work.
On the discussion about food/weight/perimenopause, I am in the same boat with the rest of you. Weight loss has been awful for me for the past year or so, and I can't tolerate the same foods I used to eat. I'm not trying any weight loss plan while training right now because I know I need the calories, but tomorrow is six weeks out from the race, so I am going to be a little more focused on my meal planning and try to have mostly whole foods vs. sweets/processed/alcohol.6 -
Great that your husband will be able to join you for your marathon @marisap2010! That will make all the difference.
Sorry to hear about your struggles @tarun_yadavA but I bet some rest and recovery will do you good.
Did a hot and sweaty 10 miles this morning. Cooler temp than normal, but no wind and high humidity cancelled that out 🥵

Perfect running weather. Overcast for the most part, cooler than usual, tolerable humidity with a slight breeze. Great run. Kept it slow and steady. I didn't look at my watch except for heart rate/zone. Counted the miles outloud when my watch buzzed. I ended up pacing within a minute. Last mile was my fastest. About a minute slower pace than my shorter runs. I feel good and pleased. Taking a couple days off (weather and unexpected childcare issues) didn't backfire like I expected. Good luck to everyone with upcoming races.4 -
Back from vacation and although I loved being in the Caribbean, I was ready to leave the heat and humidity behind! I ran 4 days while there. Last Sunday I got 4 miles in before it started pouring rain. I was close to the hotel so I ducked inside and did another mile on the hotel treadmill. On Monday, I ran 4 miles, on Wednesday I discovered a walking/running/biking path next to the ocean and ran 5 miles, and on Thursday, I ran 3 miles. I also got a lot of walking miles in for warm ups and cool downs. We rented a car a couple of days and drove to Christoffel Park where we hiked to the highest peak on the island. It was a lot of scrambling over huge boulders especially near the top. Following that we hiked in Sheta Boka National Park to see the blue holes and natural bridge.
I took yesterday as a rest day. I didn't get home until 2:00 am and my internal clock still woke me at 5:30 am. This morning I ran 6 miles and had an extra appreciation for our 70 degree temperature, 78% humidity, and the beautiful green grass and mountains here in southwest Virginia.
This was the view from the balcony of my hotel room in Curacao.
Highest peak on the island - let's go there!
Part of trail to said peak.
Painted mural near the multi-use trail.
This pedestrian bridge was on pontoons and would swing open every time a boat would pass through the harbor. Very neat to watch. If it was opening partially for a smaller boat, pedestrians could stay on the bridge but when it opened for the large shipping container ships they would clear it since it stayed open longer. There was a ferry nearby that shuttled people across when the floating bridge was open.5 -
@Teresa502 sounds and looks like a nice vacation (except for the heat). You sure we're busy. I think you need a vacation from your vacation 😉3
