I take back everything nice I said about the weather yesterday. Today was back to the usual mess.
Today is also the first day of school for us. There were a surprising number of people on the trail and lots of cars and busses driving around. The whole neighborhood schedule changes when school starts back. My kid wasn't thrilled about going back but I think my husband is relieved to have some drama free hours for a change!
@shanaber Thanks for sharing your friend's post. It's a nice reminder to appreciate the journey even when it's hard.3 -
@martaindale wow, schools here don't start for another month. Enjoy your peace lol.
After Monday's mistake I remembered to check the plan before setting out today, and yep, it had gone up to 13km. Added the extra (flat) couple on at the start of my usual Wednesday route. It wasn't as fast as last week, but I have reached the point where I can run (slowly!) up the looooooong hill with only a 30 second walk break in the middle whereas not that long ago I had to run-walk-run. My legs aren't very happy with me at the moment, so I'm torn as to whether to make Friday's 26km (which will be my longest ever, yikes!!!) run my usual slog up to the village on the mountain with some extra or whether to reduce the elevation a bit this week and stay down on the foothills. Guess I'll plot both routes and see what I feel like when I fall out of bed.
Also, I.am.so.rungry. Summer weekends have become chaotic where food is concerned and result in too much of the wrong stuff being swallowed, so I'm trying to make up for it by being strict on calories and not eatting junk on weekdays. But damn I wanna donut right now.

@martaindale Sorry your weather went back to being horrible. Our schools started back last week - Thursday and Friday for kids. When I was in school, we always started back the day after Labor Day. I wish it were that way for the kids now. It seems they have a week vacation once a month (probably not, but it feels that way), but start back so much sooner in the "fall."
@eleanorhawkins You are doing great with your running. Good luck with no junk during the week. Had to laugh about the donut comment.2 -
Oooh, donuts sound wonderful @eleanorhawkins! It's been years since I had one.
5 easy treadmill miles tonight. After the speed work yesterday, this felt so easy.

I am glad you all enjoyed Rachel's post. She was the first person I knew who ran ultras and when I met her I wasn't a runner yet and did not know that she was. Her posts on WordPress about her experiences and races are really great. She has a good one up recently on recovery.
@martaindale - most of the schools here went back either last week or this week. Like @quilteryoyo I find it so strange because we also didn't go back until after Labor Day. I can't imagine being in a class room while it is still so hot out, but on the other hand maybe most all have air conditioning now so for some kids it might be better than at home.
@eleanorhawkins - your are doing so great with your build up! I remember when you were struggling with shorter runs and the drills your coaches set for you. Look at you know taking on hills and long (really long) runs! I'm not a donut fan but I feel ya on the runger and trying to eat healthier during the week.
Sunday was a brief respite of the humidity we have been having. I know we have always had some monsoon moisture at this time of the year but I do not recall it being this bad or lasting this long. We are now having record setting heat again and it is starting even earlier in the morning. So I decided if I want to run at all this week I had to get to bed early and get up earlier. I managed to get up at 6:30 and out the door before 7:30 with Hobbes but quickly realized it was getting too hot for him. We walked the neighborhood sticking as much as possible to the shade and then circled back and dropped him at home. I headed back out and while it was getting hot it was still so much better than if I had waited to go out at my usual time.
Total for August so far: 25.74 miles5 -
Morning all from sunny London! Getting hot out here - 33C here ( that's >90F for you guys across the Pond!). Big deal here cos it never usually gets that hot! Got a 10K in - beat the heat!

We started after Labor Day as well. Our school district does a lot of long weekends. We have a 3 or 4 day weekend every month, a full week for thanksgiving, and almost 3 weeks for Christmas, as well as spring break week. When I was in school there were very few 3 day weekends, we only got 2 or 3 days for thanksgiving and our Christmas break was about 2 weeks. It makes for a shorter summer, but I think the kids like the more frequent breaks during the year. And even as a parent, it’s nice to be able to count on some long weekends for little trips to see family or doing something fun without the kids missing school. Pros and cons I guess.3 -

It rained last night!! It did nothing to help the weather this morning, but we were in need of a good soaking rain. I am loving this week of short runs. It’s such a nice break. I know at the end of it is a HM in these horrid conditions, but I am focusing on enjoying them while they last!7 -
Yep @martaindale we got about 20 minutes of moderate rain last night too. First time since June 11. So people were out dancing in the streets 😏
But it was back to normal today 😒
6 treadmill miles this evening.

@quilteryoyo I'm working my way up. Maybe a 10 miler in the next month or so. Then local half if the price is right. A full once travel costs come down a bit.
August goal: 30 miles
8/1: 3 miles
8/6: 4 miles walking (not counting toward goal)
8/8: 5 miles
8/11: 3 miles walk/run (not counting toward goal)
Tonight's planned solo run turned into spontaneous interval training to/from Dairy Queen. Pushing a stroller trying to keep up with a bike with training wheels that had zero sense of pace. Kids got ice cream. I got whiplash from the stop and go. 🤣

August Goal: 100 Miles
8/2: 5.51 miles
8/3: 6.04 miles
8/4: 6.01 miles

8/9: 6.02 miles
8/10: 6.04 miles
8/11: 6.10 miles
46.75/100 miles completed for August
Today's run was pretty good. The moon was really pretty when I headed out. I ran the same route as the last 2 days, so 6 miles. It was a little cooler this morning. We got a very small amount of rain last night so it was a little humid, but not bad. I saw a frog and I saw fox over by Lilly the Donkey's house.

I'm starting a little late but I'll go for 20 miles this month. I'll start tomorrow morning!7

I’ve been covered up with work and life commitments this week but managed to run 5 miles on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and cross train on Tuesday and this morning. I’ve enjoyed reading about everyone’s running adventures here and @AlphaHowls not only do you amaze me with your mileage but so do your shoes!
Flying to Curaçao in the morning for a few days. Running clothes are packed!7 -
Today's 4 Miler

And Strava tells me it's 1000 up for 2022

Just checking in 🙂
I DNS'd today's race, and did 5k round trip up a smaller mountain with my daughter, at her pace, before picking up my packet without the timing chip yesterday. Big disappointment, but there was no way I was going to do 25km today with 1500m elevation, in <6 hours, without it setting me back health-wise. So, moving on!
Hike featured views of my favorite mountains:
Last time I came to this spot, I actually hoped to go on around to those mountains, but could see a storm moving in and my watch/phone batteries were all running out, so I took the hint and went back the way I came. This time, the weather was beautiful.

Sorry you had to DNS @polskagirl01, but you made the smart choice. The mountain is lovely. I wish I had such nice views.
@AlphaHowls I too am amazed not only by your mileage, but by your shoes. I wear Saucony but usually have to replaced them between 300-400 miles.
@Teresa502 Have fun on your trip! I am so jealous. 😊2 -
@polskagirl01 love your mountains.
My long run yesterday didn't happen, my haphazard chocolate biscuit based carb loading on Thursday combined with no electricity meaning we were ridiculously hot all day gave me some kind of horrific indigestion/heartburn that had me up most of the night. Tried to tough it out and set off on my run, but realised after a couple of miles that I had to bail and walk home. Took me ages, had to stol and sit and rest and by the time I got back it felt like someone rammed a knife in my chest. Husband freaked, dragged me to ER where they did an ECG and left me waiting for 3 hours before saying "your heart's fine, it's just abdominal pain". Yeah, thanks. They gave me meds for pain and nausea but I didn't manage to eat anything all day and am pretty exhausted. So I guess we'll just call this another cutback week :-(

@polskagirl01 way to listen to your body and not your head. You made a brave choice, but the right one. You'll be back at it when you are ready, in the mean time try to enjoy the down time.
13.1 miles this morning. Ugh, so hot 🥵 I guess I will never get used to the heat and humidity this year.
5 -
Yikes @eleanorhawkins that sounds horrible and scary. I'm glad it turned out to be nothing serious, but sorry you had to go through that!2
-
@polskagirl01 Smart call on the DNS. I hope you feel better soon!
Welcome @gibsonryan2015!!
Congrats on 1000 miles @tarun_yadavA
@Teresa502 Have fun! Curacao sounds amazing!
@Scott6255 Great job on your run. I'm doing the same next weekend and hoping for a freak cold front!3 -

Logging 2 runs. Did a quick 3 miles in the dark before work yesterday. It was the earliest I have run in several weeks and I forgot how quiet it is at 5:30. Love it. And I saw an armadillo!
The kid had climbing team tryouts this morning so we got up early to be at the gym for a 7am sign-in. There is a neighborhood near the gym with a little lake surrounded by paths, about half sidewalk and the other half is lovely crushed granite trail material. It was hot and humid as usual but the trail was pretty and it's nice to have a new place to run from time to time.5 -

I listen to my shoes more than I listen to what is recommended by the brand. My knees usually tell me first, maybe my hip will start griping. So far, I do not have any reports from the knees or the hips.
I rotate with two different pairs, so one pair is on the road every other day. My running shoes also only do running, they come off once I am home from the mile walk.
Nothing grand or magic and maybe just me being frugal. Hard to say really, I have six pairs waiting to be allowed out to the box
6 -
In fact:
Here are two that I have ready to run, but think I am going to swap one of the Saucony for Mizuno...easier for me to remember which to wear.4 -
@AlphaHowls I started "listening to the shoes" more a while back, and was very surprised at how long some of my shoes went... yours still win, though. Although I seem to remember @PastorVincent wearing shoes until they were totally falling apart.5
-
I think the older we get the less forgiving our bodies are. I used to be able to wear them until they fell apart. Now my shins or lower back tell me exactly when they need replacing. I have been thinking of finding a younger running twin in the neighborhood who would be able to use my hand me downs.4
-
Also I think the more we run, the more our bodies adapt to running, and the shoes can become less important.
Of course, every body is different, and aging is a legitimate factor as well.3
