Smashed a 9K (5.65m) today. Just under 50 mins.

@quilteryoyo I would tend to lean towards the longer race training plan (HM). It would make a 10 mile race feel easier if you were conditioned for the longer distance.5

Thanks guys 😊1

Welcome @Jane10s!! I second C25k as a great place to start. That’s what I used and so many others here did too.
@marisap2010 You’re doing great with your marathon training! 8 weeks left is really getting into the meat of training.
@quilteryoyo Echoing others above, either a 10k or HM plan could work as long as the long run will get you to the distance you need. I don’t know a lot about the Fitzgerald plans but other 10k plans I have used (HH, Hansons) incorporate a lot more speed work that the HM plans. Makes sense as the shorter race distance means pushing for a faster race pace. But that also alters the training style. HM plans focus more on endurance and the workouts reflect that. So, beyond the long runs, you might want to look at the weekly workouts. You’ll probably notice some differences in the type of workouts depending on the intention of the plan. I agree with @eleanorhawkins that doing a little base building before starting a plan is a good idea. I also usually try to be realistic with myself around holiday weeks. A 12 week plan usually takes me 14-15 weeks when it falls over Nov and Dec because I know I won’t run a full week during the holidays. I plan to repeat weeks around those and that way I never feel behind the 8 ball at the end of my plan. I also build in an extra taper week as a buffer in case I get injured or something unplanned pops up and I need to adjust the schedule. If things are on track I can always add a few miles in before my real taper week.
@tarun_yadavA Crushing it!

August total: 10.1/105 miles
8/1: 5.1 miles
8/3: 5 miles
Uneventful and sweaty. Went faster than I intended and my HR reflected that. The run didn’t feel too hard but my HR looked like I was working HARD!5 -

Awesome! Well done 🙌1 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »@polskagirl01 I agree that everything else should be ruled out first. Just throwing that info out there and hoping that, if that is what it is, giving you a little ray of hope that it will get better over time.
I've had to nap for several hours a day on every day of my vacation so far... but today I made it all day without crashing. We didn't do too much - pirate ship ride, walk around tourist area, extended beach time - and I'm almost ready for bed now, but it was a good day 🙂
Maybe I'll make it out for a short beach run tomorrow. Or maybe not.
Yesterday was WWII bunkers and walk to a lighthouse/port. I think the deciding factor for the "mountains vs beach" question for me is that I like the people I encounter in the mountains better. So while I still like both, mountains win if I'm forced to choose one or the other.

I'm so excited for all you marathoners. I can't wait to cheer you on. My only advice is to trust the plan!
I'm excited to follow your progress, all of you!
@quilteryoyo RE: plans: lots of good advice above. I'm a Hal girl myself, sometimes with modifications, but you can modify your go-to coach's plans, too. If the 10k goes to your race distance, that will work. Otherwise, I'd take a plan for a longer distance, and then find the point where the long run reaches your goal distance, and the point where taper starts, then take out the weeks in-between, and set the plan to your calendar to end with race day. If you have a time goal or want to train for slightly further than race distance, you might leave an extra week or two in there, and/or or look for a plan that includes speedwork. Depends on your goals for this race.4 -
Plan called for a recovery run in Z1. 2.58 miles.
July total: 10.46 miles4 -
August Goal: 100 Miles
8/2: 5.51 miles
8/3: 6.04 miles
11.55/100 miles completed for July
It was 86°F feels like 89° when I got up this morning at 4:30. I thought the run might suck, but it actually was pretty good. I ended up with 6 miles. It was slow, but I got negative splits. I did encounter some loose dogs. They were adorable. There were 2 other tan ones so maybe 8-10 puppies. I went up to the house and ran the bell to let the owner know they were out. They were crossing the street and I was also worried they would follow me.

@kgirlhart They are so cute!0

Mega cute! I would mind encountering some of those, the loose dogs I meet are always big and look scary, even if they usually aren't.1 -
Morning all. Hello from London! 5.7M done today, in ~50 mins at 8:49". Will try upload screenshot
5 -
Also... Was my 200th run for the Calendar year. 952 done so far.
6 -
@kgirlhart those puppies are adorable! At first I was afraid someone dumped them.
This morning I went out into the heat and jogged to the beach... took off my shoes & shirt, hooked them on the strap to my little waist pack, and walked along the beach. Every so often, I dropped the pack in the sand and jumped into the cold water. LOTS of people out there, and non-harmful-to-humans jellyfish washing up all around, but it was lovely.6 -
August Goal: 100 Miles
8/2: 5.51 miles
8/3: 6.04 miles
8/4: 6.01 miles
17.56/100 miles completed for July
It was 86°F feels like 89° again when I got up this morning at 4:30. I had another good 6 mile run though. I was able to catch the sprinklers at the courthouse. They turned off just after I passed them. Yesterday I got out a little late and missed them. I saw some of the puppies again, but today they stayed in the yard.
Non running related.I know that I mentioned that my mom fell and broke her hip. She's been recovering well, but her insurance wouldn't approve an acute rehab facility so she had to go to a skilled nursing facility with rehab. My sister found one on the list that would allow visitors 24/7 so she has been staying with her. The staff to patient ratio is not good though and it is taking a long time to get meds etc. And we have just not been happy with her being there. The nurses and aides are nice enough. But they are understaffed and rush through when they finally do get there. This morning someone didn't show up and it was noon before mom got her morning meds. Today we were able to get it approved to move her home (to my sister's) with home health. We are happy to get her out of there, but before we could celebrate too much my sister and my mom both tested positive for Covid. So far they are both feeling ok and they are hoping to just be able to recuperate at home. Mom's doctor said to just monitor her oxygen tonight and if it falls to take her to the ER. Otherwise they will send someone over tomorrow to do an infusion. I'll tell you though, I am not sure if I can take anymore stress. The last couple of years my two biggest fears have been that my mom would break her hip, or get covid. I am trying to stay positive, but it is getting harder to do.
7 -
@kgirlhart glad your Mom got to go to your sister's house and have a home health care come, but sorry they both got Covid 😒
6 treadmill miles this evening for me.

Great running everyone. I've liked as appropriate.
@polskagirl01 I'm sorry you are having to nap so much on your vacation, but glad you made it through yesterday without one. I hope you start feeling like your old self soon. CoVID is such a weird virus in how it affects people so differently. Sounds like today's jog/walk along the beach was a great one.
Those puppies are adorable @kgirlhart ! I hope the owner got them up and they didn't get hurt. I'm glad you were able to get your mom out of the nursing home. I think the people who do show up try their best, but when they are so understaffed, it does affect the care of their patients. I know the one where I used to sing at on Sundays said they were staffed to the minimum required by the state, but that is NOT enough...especially when people decided they will just not show up to work. I'm sorry to hear that they both have CoVID though. I hope they both just have a mild case and are feeling better quickly. Hugs to you on the stress level. It's tough. Hang in there.
I did my birthday 6.3 mile run this morning. It wasn't pleasant, unfortunately. The temperature was okay - around 73F with 78% humidity, but my body did not want to cooperate. Details are in the spoiler below. Also in the spoiler are pictures from the run...mountain views, geese and a sign that made me think...hummm. That brings my total miles (fast walking and running) to 12.00 miles for the month.I got up and drove to a paved track this morning to do my birthday run. It is hilly and way too sunny, but it’s the only good place that I have to do a long run if I don’t want to run out the road or on my driveway. It was a sNeasy (slow, emphasis on NOT, easy) run. I felt okay and my HR was good (Avg135, Max 145), but my legs did not want to cooperate. Sometimes they felt stiff and at other times like jelly. I would think it was because I ran further than I have all year, but they were like that from the very beginning. Not sure what was going on with that.
THEN, I came to the very hilly part of the course and I don’t remember that one hill being so steep. It was tough to walk up, so stopped at the top to talk to a lady, who was walking, for a couple of minutes.
THEN, I ate a honey stinger at about mile 2.5. By the time I got to mile 3, I was beginning to have tummy issues. By the time I got to the turnaround point, the furthest from any bathroom, of course, it was getting pretty bad. They have a bench there, so I sat down for a few minutes to see if it would go away. I felt some better, so I started back. I did have some episodes of having to walk until the feeling went away. I actually walked almost the entire mile 6 because of that. I was determined to run at least part of the last 0.3 miles a little faster and did so. But when I stopped running….well, it was a battle. Fortunately, it was one that I won. I walked my fast 0.35 mile for cool down and then slowed to a stroll back to the car. Once I slowed down, I no longer had the urge, so instead of taking an available short cut back to the car, I just walked the track all the way back. Overall, I fast walked 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down. I ran/walked 6.30 miles (63rd birthday) in 1:25:21 minutes for an overall pace of 13:33 min/mile. I accidently hit the segment button instead of the stop button once, so messed up my mile splits. But, the last 1.3 miles were at a 14:53 min/mile pace. My fastest mile was the first one, at 12:10 min/mile. The stroll back to the car was 0.77 miles. So, my total for the day, including the stroll, was 7.77 miles. Odd that it ended up all sevens. Overall elevation was 477 feet, per Garmin, but I really think it was more than that. What this run tells me is that I REALLY need to get a lot more mileage in before I try to run the 10 mile race in December.
Thought the trees made a nice frame for the mountains.
I love old barns. I didn't notice that the cloud looks like a bird flying until I looked at the picture tonight. Since I wasn't flying, I guess something needed to be. LOL
Someone decided to decorate this bench for the summer. I thought it was cute.
Saw a gaggle of geese in one of the fields.
The trail near the turn around point.
This sign made me think. Since I'm not a criminal, can I trespass?
Thanks everyone for the advice on my training plan. Based on today's run, I think I will do the HM plan that I did last year for the HM. Even though it didn't make the HM easy, I think it would make 10 miles easier to do. It does have speed work a couple of days a week and foundation (slow) runs the rest of the time. And, if I have the time and energy, I may make some of the weekday runs a little longer too - or maybe up my pace a bit. We'll see. Life always seems to get in the way a day or two a week.7 -
@kgirlhart hugs! Fingers crossed the covid will be mild and soon behind you all. Good that your sister could get her home though.
@quilteryoyo happy birthday!1 -

Thanks @eleanorhawkins and @tarun_yadavA . After running, I ignored all chores and relaxed the day away. It was really nice.
Great running @tarun_yadavA . Looks like you have a nice place to run.

Happy birthday @quilteryoyo 💗🎉🎂Way to get through a very tough run!0
-
@quilteryoyo Happy birthday! Sorry your birthday run sucked but it looks like a pretty place. I love the term gaggle!
@kgirlhart I am so sorry to hear your mom and sister have covid after avoiding it for so long. It must feel like the hits just keep coming right now. Fingers crossed for mild symptoms for them both. On the upside, the most common variants right now cause significantly milder symptoms on the average than the first few we had so the odds are good that they will feel better soon. Also glad to hear your mom is getting to move to home health. It’s nice that your sister is able and willing to put in the effort.
@polskagirl01 Mountains versus beach? I probably would say mountains too these days. When I was younger I definitely would have said beach. I love the look and smell of a beach but don’t particularly like getting in the water. I like to hang out at a beach but much prefer to be out and about in the mountains. Also, the cooler weather that often comes with the mountains is a big plus in my book!4 -
August total: 14.2/105 miles
8/1: 5.1 miles
8/3: 5 miles
8/4: 4.1 miles
Treadmill miles last night. I tried piecing together 2 shorter runs. Not a fan. Maybe it was the runs I chose but I was adjusting manually a lot to keep moving when the instructor was doing warm up and talking. This one guy talked forever before the run started then the pace shot up super fast. Was hoping to like this method because there are a ton of really short runs that I will never use if I don’t do multiple at a time. I just don’t run in the 1-2 mile range anymore as a standalone. I may try it with different instructors one more time tonight just to give it a fair chance.4 -
Mountains all the way for me! I don't mind a walk and paddle along a nice clean empty beach, but living on the Costa del Sol with its overcrowded, dirty beaches and plagues of jellyfish (which terrify me as much as snakes) I have developed a strong dislike for them. Sad as I live like a mile and a half from the beach. There are days in the summer when I'm tempted just to keep running south at the end of a run and straight into the water, but I haven't actually done it yet.
I've reached the part of my training plan where the fun starts. Today's long run (I'm having to do them on Friday mornings so as not to 'ruin' my husband's weekends **rolls eyes**) was 24km, which is just 1km short of my longest ever (but I'm pretty sure my longest ever was more or less flat). As usual, I headed for the village halfway up the mountain behind us, but I plotted a new, less direct route up there that I saw on Strava one of the guys from our club has been running. That meant that the first 4km or so were flat which gave my legs time to warm up a bit, which was helpful. My 'not-quite-a-marathon-but-treating-it-like-one' race is basically a 15km flattish warm-up followed by a mountain HM, so I'm trying to make my long runs as similar as possible to that.
Anyway, the run. I got out by 7 am as it was starting to get light. The hills in the first half were tough, especially as it started to get warm, but I tackled them with run-walk intervals and by thinking about pizza. 15 miles (or just short of) is automatic pizza, right? Had a loose dog encounter, but for once it was a friendly dog. Overfriendly, in fact, it's a good job I do actually like dogs as long as they're not trying to attack me as this one decided to cover me in kisses, jump all over me and insist I threw its ball for the 5 minutes it took the young German couple walking it to reach us.
As the grin on the photo on Strava shows, I was relieved when I reached the highest point and knew it was pretty much all downhill from there on out (apart from a couple of slopes near the end) but my knees weren't so sure about that and complained a bit on the steeper downs, meaning I had to run slower than I would downhill on shorter runs. Also, I bought a SheWee but haven't actually taken it out with me yet, and oh boy did I need it by km 18!
I've had a recovery shake, stretched, had some quality time with my foam roller and now hope to do as little as possible for the rest of the day except pray that my knees forgive me by tomorrow, as we're going hiking!

Thanks @martaindale , @Scott6255 ,
@martaindale What instructors are you using? I just don't recall reading about it before, but I may have missed something.
Great run @eleanorhawkins ! You'll have to report back on how the SheWee worked out for you. Glad the dog was friendly. Sounds like you are doing great with your training.
I worked this morning, came home and did a mile walk on the treadmill and a couple of things that had to be done, and then left to take mom to town to meet up with her two remaining sisters for dinner. So, a busy but great day.
Not running related. Picture in the spoiler is the scene that greeted me this morning when I took Tippy out before I left for work. I thought it was cool.7 -
