Ongoing Periods - long time

Hi Friends,

I have a question and hoping to get guidance from someone who has faced similar issues in the past or present.. I am diagnosed with PCOS and I hardly get my periods timely since the beginning. I gained almost 15 kgs in past 3-5 years and I am finding it very difficult to lose that weight/fat. I have made massive changes to my diet in past 1 year and it has helped me to some extent (better sleep, nutrition, controls, portion controls etc) and a i even got two cycles if normal period. However, my period hasn’t stopped since July 13th and still ongoing. All my test results and sonography test show nothing!!!! Since it is still not stopping my doctor gave me a prescription of progesterone (birth control) which stopped the bleeding, but I dont think that is a long term solution. And what if this happens again…..

I have no words of advice other than I’m hoping you are seeing a medical specialist. Best wishes

Personally I would not take birth control and I would see another doctor preferably one who specializes in women's health. Good luck!
  • I would hesitate to ignore the doctor's advice, but for what it's worth, you're not alone. I don't have a diagnosis yet as still waiting for tests, but I reckon I'm peri-menopausal. (I'm 43). I had three cycles of extreme and unpredictable periods, so my Dr put me on cerizette - progesterone only pill. For me, and YMMV, it gave me a constant period, sometimes extreme but always present, for 3 months. The Tranexamic acid they gave me did nothing. The only thing that stopped it was a higher dose of progesterone. But I couldn't take that continually according to my Dr. So I decided to give my body a break and just accept the next period, forgoing the cerizette pill and holding the higher dose progesterone in reserve for the next flood. And it's all stopped! I'm spotting ATM so don't know if I'm due or just adjusting to the new cycle, but in my case, I decided which of my options (birth control pill & constant bleed v no meds and unpredictable) I preferred. As I say, take medical advice but ultimately you are the only expert on how you feel.
Oh, and also fwiw, I've been able to start exercising again and have the mental energy to plan food intake which has meant that I've lost 4lb in the first 2 weeks. CICO works, regardless of what our hormones are doing. They just sabotage our will power with regards to one or the other.
