WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the December 2022 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10878735/december-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until January 1, 2023 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Happy New Year!!
I am going to go for a lower mileage goal to start the year - I am thinking 75 miles. I am still working out my goals for the year but for sure I want to focus on quality over quantity as well as getting back to more consistency with both running and strength training.5 -
Thanks for setting up the new year @shanaber! Happy New Year everyone.
I have a Fantasy goal this year to run 2023 miles. That is averaging slightly over 168 miles a month. I did average 134 miles in 2022, so this isn't an outrageous leap. It looks and feels daunting, but I'm going to try it until I can't8 -
My goal for 2023 is to run roughly 150 km a month (ca. 93 miles)- so my yearly goal will be 1800 km . I want to also prioritise my cross training a bit more. This usually consists of weights, other strength training, and the rowing machine.
I aim to do all the scheduled sporting events in my city (except for solely swimming competitions, because I truly don’t enjoy cross training for swimming) which includes a spring road bike race, a triathlon, and an obstacle course run as well, so cross training is important for me to do well in these events and also hopefully prevent injury.9 -
Happy New Year, all! I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone and making some new friends! Most of my miles for the next few months will be walking, mostly with a stroller, up and down a lot of hills. 😵💫 Gotta build that endurance back up!
Until yesterday I hadn't posted on the boards in quite a while, so if you haven't seen me before, I'm penguinmama, I have six kids (that's one more than before if you're keeping score at home 😉) and I live in the US.
Distance Goal: 20 miles (walking)9 -

I’m gonna say 80 miles run, 100 miles total. The last couple of taper runs and Dopey will get me to almost 60 miles so even with some time off and easy return to running at the end of the month, that seems in the ballpark of where I am likely to land. I’m going to be hiking and walking in place of running for a week or 2 as I let my legs recover, so I will include those miles this month since they will be for purposeful exercise even though I don’t usually include my walking miles.
Long-term goals for 2023. Hmmm. This last year showed me that I can tolerate a lot more mileage than I thought I could. I am going back to 5 days a week as these 6 days a week training cycles really cut into my life. But, I think I will aim for at least 100 miles a month all year as my major goal. This could all fall apart over the summer as we are planning to actually travel this year, but I guess we’ll see.6 -
I'm in for 100 miles in January.
Mid-month I will find out if I need surgery. That would mess up January's running. But, being inspired by @AlphaHowls crazy laps, I figure I can run while I am in the hospital. I can picture myself running down the hall pushing my IV pole and wearing my hospital gown.7 -
WOW! January. I have created a run the year team if anyone wants to join since no one else was talking. It can have up to 99 members now!! wow. I put in for a 2x chutzpa factor for now but if any of yall join I can always increase it. LOL.
My goal for Jan will be 120 miles I think. That plus 20 or 30 walking miles will give me a start for hitting 2023 miles total. I can't do just running as it tends to be too formidable. I did it in 2021 but had a rebound year this time of less mileage.

Hi Everyone!
My goal is "listen to my body", and I'll mostly be lurking unless my body decides to start allowing running again.
@SummerSkier is there a link you can share to help us find your challenge? And is it just for running, or will walking be allowed too?7 -

@polskagirl01 this is from the Run the Edge challenge. Which is doing 2023 miles in 2023 of whatever your preference. You do have to pay to join the challenge but I think some folks already signed up for it. Just google run the year or run the edge. I am so glad you are managing to do SOMETHING active and that cold water immersion photo is making me shiver. Glad to see you are wearing gloves tho… ROTFLOL!!!!1 -
Hey everyone. Can I come back? I've missed you all a lot.
I've had the year from hell really. Like @polskagirl01 I have done nothing but struggle since covid. I had it in April, though now I finally feel like im getting my fitness back. I ran a 5k yesterday in 30:08 and though it literally took everything I had to do that the sense of achievement was fantastic.
I don't have a goal this month, I'm just going to follow my watch each day and eating better.
My year goal is to increase my VO2 max. It was at 48 in April, down to 40 now. I want to see if I can get it back up again.
Happy New year from NZ10 -

It can be done. I laughed when I read it, but I have done it. I ended up in the emergency room back in 2012 and had to wait for antibiotics to kick in and get the gallbladder surgery I needed. As I woke up, the doctor leaned over me and said the best thing you can do now is walk. So, I got up, in a hospital gown, dragged my IV pole and two drainage tubes, up and down the hall. Ever so often a nurse would hand me a popsicle.

Welcome back @Avidkeo! I've seen you've been busy on Strava, but good to see you back here!
@SummerSkier is there a team name for the RTY challenge? How do you join your team?1 -
I think in the run the edge website you just search teams. My team name is bONs2023RTY and open to anyone.1
-
@Scott6255 I think you have to join the 2023 RTY first. I couldn't figure out how to do that without going to an e-mail I had gotten and following the link they gave. Once I signed up, I searched for teams, found @SummerSkier 's team, bONs2023RTY, and requested to join. I don't like the fact that I have to choose from either 2023 miles or 500, 1000, or 1500. I'm going to shoot for 800, which is right in the middle, so said 1000, but know I won't make that....unless I count my mowing miles and tennis miles...then I'm not sure.2
-
Yeah thanks @quilteryoyo I watched a video and saw that after you pay to join then you can search for teams. Haven't decided if I am willing to pay the $30 yet.2

Happy New Year everyone! 😊

Well, you’re committed now. Let us know when you sign up for it!!Hey everyone. Can I come back? I've missed you all a lot.
Yay! Welcome back! I’ve seen you running on strava. Didn’t realize you were also struggling with long COVID. Here’s hoping for 2023 being better then 2022!
@emptydog Sending some positive vibes your direction. And, it doesn’t surprise me at all that @alphahowls has actually done hospital laps.3 -
Happy 2023 ! Here's to a wonderful happy and healthy new year!
2023 goals

@Scott6255 If you logged in Km's like your Northern Neighbors it's not so daunting ~ 2023 km = 1257.03 miles.7
-
Welcome to all the new folks and welcome back to those who have been away for a while.
Congrats on your new addition @penguinmama87 ! You'll get a workout pushing that stroller.
@emptydog Hoping you don't need surgery, but if you do, hospital laps are possible, apparently.
@polskagirl01 I hope your body heals completely and you are able to start running like you want to again.
I'm glad you are feeling better and back with us @Avidkeo .
I hear you @Scott6255 . After I did I was thinking "Is it really worth it to just have the tracking calendar?" But, it is nice to see it all in one place that automatically adds it up, since I am notorious for making mistakes. LOL
Happy New Year @tarun_yadavA . Great goals!
I have decided my goals for 2023 are:
1) Continue my streak of at least 1 mile ran or walked fast.
2) Average 70 miles a month. I reached 70 four of the last 5 months. So, should be doable.
3) Shoot for 1000 miles total for the year - run, fast walk, and other exercise (mowing, tennis, trees, cleaning gutters, etc.)
4) Improve my time for the T-Minus 10 miler
5) Lose back to my goal weight - from today, that would be 14 pounds! Yikes!8 -
@polskagirl01 My goal is "listen to my body"
@AlphaHowls That is fabulous and inspiring.
@ martaindalesome positive vibes your direction. And, it doesn’t surprise me at all that @alphahowls has actually done hospital laps.
Thank you! And now that I think about it, it doesn't surprise me either.
@quilteryoyoHoping you don't need surgery, but if you do, hospital laps are possible, apparently.
Apparently, they are. Heh.3 -
I ran 3.73 miles this morning early. Cloudy, temperature 39F, but no wind.
I run at the lakefront park and usually there are other people around but this morning there was only one other runner and one guy walking.

Happy to find this challenge. Love the lexicon in the intro. I've been trying the last couple of months to get back into sleasy wunning, but mostly it's been sneasy wogging. I do kms because I like the bigger numbers. I'm hoping to work up to be able to do one half marathon length wun (either in a formal race or on my own) toward the end of the year.
My 2023 goal: 1000 km (~620 miles)
January goal: 50 km (~32 miles).

@SummerSkier ok, seeing as it's a distance challenge, I'd better opt out for now. It was fun going around the world with everyone in the group challenge this year though, and I'm glad we made it the whole way this time! Thanks to all who helped carry me along part of the way!
@Avidkeo oh no, I'm sorry you've been struggling. It's encouraging seeing people who have recovered (although frustrating that every one of them has a different story of what worked and didn't work - no magic cure so far). Feel free to share what helped you the most! I'm glad you've been able to get back into things lately.
Re: hospital laps. I'm thinking back to a podcast where an experienced runner had cancer and decided to walk during his chemo treatments. I can't remember if it was literally while he was hooked up, or immediately afterwards, but he was definitely doing hospital laps and believes it really helped his recovery. It sounds like it was really difficult though, and he said himself that it's not for everyone or every circumstance. I remember doing hospital laps while in labor with my first baby. It was during the early stages of labor and walking was supposed to help speed things up... only it didn't. I'd been walking to the gym every day for the whole pregancy and that baby was more than happy to stay put past his due date.7 -
Hi, all. My goal is to get running again and lose this 60 lbs I've put on the last 3 years. I've popped in here over the last few years but didn't stick with it. I'm trying for it again. I used to run several marathons a year and a few Ironman's and now I can't run around the block. May 2023 be the year.
Goal: 100 miles (walking and running).
1/1: 5 miles11 -
Welcome newbies, and welcome back old friends!quilteryoyo wrote: »I hear you @Scott6255 . After I did I was thinking "Is it really worth it to just have the tracking calendar?" But, it is nice to see it all in one place that automatically adds it up, since I am notorious for making mistakes. LOL
I have been on Smashrun ever since I started running and that site is THE BEST at tracking stats and mileage. It automatically pulls from Garmin so there is no effort. I can put a yearly goal in there and it will track me through the year, so I think I'll just continue using that.5
