Joyce - I've never heard of a recumbant elliptical! But I bet it would be a good workout. I really love my DVR, as a matter of fact, it's very rare that I watch just "regular" TV. And when I do, many is the time when I try to fast forward thru the commercial only to find out that I can't.....lol I really like having the leasure to watch my shows when *I* have the time rather than having to commit to a certain time.
Annwilliams - welcome
Heather - I hope you get to France, but you're right, if it causes dh stress, it's worth cancelling. We usually go to Florida in February. Vince likes to go to the Daytona 500. Just reading about your food I can see where your son gets his love of culinary arts from! I love the golden (orange) beets! Wish we could get them here. Oh, I can get them -- in the health food store and are they ever expensive! Good luck at WM - they will usually do an even exchange for you.
Just got back from church and there was this really cute little kid there running around. It just reminded me that I'll never get to see Bryan and Diana's children. So how did I cope? I ate some low fat oatmeal raisin cookies. Enough is enough now..... Wonder why he hates me so much?
katla - I can't think of any fish that I don't like. There are some that I've never tried like octopus or eel, but everything that I've tried, I've liked. Vince is the same way as your dh..I almost never can do something right, he ALWAYS has to redo it. Oh well....I just smile to myself.
Sylvia - hope your bruises heal quickly. Congrats on being down in weight. I would be skeptical, too, about that chicken salad.
Pat - keep on sharing with us all what you glean from OA. It's all very interesting. I totally agree with you about Meg's daughter (putting down strict expectations). However, in her daughter's case, that might just be too much for the girl to handle. I'm sure Meg will do the right thing for the girl. Hope the Cardinals listen to you. Is that baseball????? Shows you how much I know about sports. Yea, I think Cardinals is baseball.
Went to the funeral for Ken's brother. It was..in a word...different. Not something that I'm used to. I took cookies for the family and a card, not one person there had even a card for them. There was a service in a chapel attached to the funeral home. After the service, I put the cookies in Lynette's car and we drove home. Honestly, Ken looked terrible. Probably lots of pain killers in addition to little sleep contributed to it. Seems his brother was a bit on the outs with the rest of the family. It was interesting that the pastor who evidentally married him the previous month never met any of the brothers. You would have thought that he would have met them at least at the wedding. Well, in a week or so depending on the weather, we'll probably have Ken & Lynette over. Ken and Vince can play music and I know that Lynette wants to go in the pool so we'll do that. The third brother seemed very upbeat, he wasn't at the casket receiving people or anything. Interesting. Well....I'm not going to dwell on it.
I sent Bryan and Diana an email saying that I was thinking of them and for them to send me their new address (they moved back to LaReunion a week or so ago). Why they moved to LaReunion, I don't totally understand. The first time Bryan was there he was renting with some other girls and evidentally he was having financial troubles, he was doing tutoring on the side to earn extra $$$. So why would you go back to where you were struggling??? I suspect that perhaps Diana likes it there. I'm not sure because I don't really know her. Jessica did say once that she likes being in a comfort zone, she doesn't like change. And LaReunion is comfortable for her. It just really saddens me to know that I'll never see Bryan again or his children. I guess today is one of my down-in-the-dumps days.
Tomorrow I'm planning to do some yoga, then hold my plank (I'm going to put the TV on to distract myself) and then go to the extremepump class.
barbie - hope its nothing real serious for Brandy. Let us know what the vet says
funkim - aewsome loss!

Michelle, if you have ever seen rehab commercials for nursing home they show the physical therapy department. I usually see these int eh commercials. I am hoping that after getting used to the way the feet work in them that I can finally get on a standing one and make it work for me but with the MS it takes a lot of stamina. So I may have to take the attitude of if it works, don't fix it.

Good morning!
Talk about unfairness! I got on the scale this morning and was delighted to find I had lost a tiny bit more, making a total of 2.2 pounds over the weekend. Then my husband got on the scale and he had lost 3.4 pounds. Now, that sounds pretty good till you consider that he ate like a pig all weekend! He ate an entire 12 pack box of ice cream sandwiches, a mountain of BBQ, French fries, cookies, enough rice for four people, and a box of breakfast cereal in front of the tv like it was popcorn. He said, "well, I DID run out of icecream sandwiches." Grrrrrrrr.
The new puppy is a real joy. MFP should list laughing as a cardio exercise. This little guy is a real clown. And the most affectionate dog I've ever had. Plus he's doing extremely well with potty training. He had two accidents the first day he was home and none since. Today is a week since we got him. I think the doggie door has been a huge help. He is, however, entering the chewing on everything stage, so we have to watch him like a hawk. I went in the bathroom to take a shower yesterday and when I came out there were pens and markers on the floor, one of my shoes in the recliner with the laces untied, four stuffed animals dragged out the doggie door into the yard, and a box of breakfast cereal taken off the table. I caught him with his head in the box! I swear I wasn't even gone very long. His big sister is not always very tolerant of him, especially when it comes to her toys. She will occasionally snap at him and he will cower in fear for about three seconds, then he's right back to his bubbly little self. He doesn't take her too seriously. I had forgotten how much fun it is to have a puppy.
Well, I hope you all have a wonderful day!
Sylvia0 -
Hi all you vitamin F pals
Had a fair day yesterday pain wise but can't say the same for the night. Had my shower and half dressed. Have to wait for hubby to get home to drive me to Hospital I have to stop this bull headedness. I was in the frame of mind Dr. said it was a bruise well then ok. But I want an x ray done. I'm experiencing numbness in spots don't need that. I'll come back with what they say. I still don't believe that doctor didn't order an x ray.
I'm trying to lose with diet only I went and changed my profile to sedentary for the time being and that cut back on the calorie intake. And there's no exercise points to go on. Oh well. Wii gave me 1.5 lb loss for the weekend. So that's ok.

Since my first post yeasterday, I have discovered that MFP has estimated my BMR wrong. For you who don't know what this means; BMR, is the calories each and everyone is given on the day we join MFP, and is based on what our bodies need to survive. That, is to say if we where in bed with a cold for example, (like I am at the moment).
Anyway, MFP has given me a daily BMR of just 1300 calories a day. The APP link which you can access free from MFP told me I needed 1568 calories a day. This is making a lot more sence to me, as I am 5'8" tall and weigh a hefty 14 stone (I live with several ovary cysts).
I ask everyone to double check with a different app from MFP, to see if their BMR matches up.
I hope mine is an isolated case.0 -
Barbie: Let us know how your doggy is doing. I hope nothing is seriously wrong.:flowerforyou:
Grandmallie: Congratulations on the loss! :flowerforyou:
DeeDee: I’m glad you had a good time bossing the boys. Making them wear red fingernail polish is an entertaining idea. They are obviously good sports and good subjects of the realm.
Sylvia: Men get to eat more and still lose. It is not fair, but it is life. :frown: Your pup is turning out to be a joy in your life, and that is as it should be. I don’t even want to imagine my life without a dog.:flowerforyou:
LinC in Northern Ontario: Be sure to let us know what the x-ray reveals. I am unsurprised that the night pain was worse. I’m not having any particular challenges with health right now, but sometimes get leg cramps in the night. When I do, I get up and walk until the cramping stops and then go back to bed. They are not fun. Be sure to let us know how things turn out.:flowerforyou:
Shapeshifter: There are a lot of people on the website who swear by BMR and TYDEE. The basic MFP program is a bit different than that, I think. I’ve been happy with it, but it isn’t for everyone. I hope the BMR/TYDEE system works well for you.:flowerforyou:
Today we are going to a building supply place to get materials needed to redo our upper deck correctly. We haven’t been able to hire the work out, so we’re doing it ourselves. I don’t mind but DH isn’t happy about it. :noway: Scraping off old flooring, prepping, priming, and applying smelly, sticky goop doesn’t appeal to him, I guess. I don’t find it appealing either. The difference is that I’m a miser/realist. We can’t find anybody we trust who is available AND I’d rather spend the money we’d pay someone else to do it on fun things. I may be whining about this soon as my muscles cramp & complain about the abuse. On another topic, my neighbor is smoking her salmon today. Mine needs to finish thawing today and be put into brine tomorrow. We’ll be smoking it on Wednesday. This is a new experience for me. I hope I end up liking her recipe because I’m using it, too.

Hello everyone,
It's been awhile since I posted but trying to read most of the posts. Been caught up in the whirlwind of life and by the time I have some time to sign on my DH says I'm neglecting him. :ohwell: I like to take pictures but they never seem to leave my camera and get to where I can work with them on the computer. To help solve some of this, we purchased a laptop of him yesterday so he can play his games and look up things while I'm on the other one. He doesn't need all the bells and whistles so we were able to find a fairly inexpensive one on sale.
Spent a wonderful time on Saturday with friends at a beautiful lake in Virginia, Lake Anna. One friend owns a home there with a ski boat so we had a great time pulling people around on the knee board. After a few hours, we headed to the house for a cookout and then just before sunset went back out on the water. Got a couple of nice pictures of the setting sun.
Scale hasn't really been moving much in either direction so I'm going to have to step up the exercise. I'm happy I haven't gained but would really like to lose a few more pounds before our vacation to West Virginia in October. We try to watch the sodium and carbs closely and am shocked at the amount found in most meals when eating out even when you think it would be on the healthier side like salads. I'm not sure why they feel they must load up a salad with so much salt!
It's a busy time for our animal rescue group too as we try to hold adoption events every other weekend and attend as many of the county fairs and special events as possible. The shelters are overflowing with puppies and kittens as well as adults. :brokenheart:
Welcome to all of the newcomers and I will hopefully be able to read and reply to others individually soon.

Barbie - thank you so much for the information on gaining weight when starting workouts. It definitely put my mind at ease. I'm not giving up, I know it will work itself out. It's mind boggling that a number on the scale can affect our mood. I'm over it now. Onward and downard
It's Monday and I'm at work. What a busy busy weekend. My DD & I made the leap and went from our 1 week trial to signing up as members of the Y. We had orientation yesterday so they showed us how to use some of the intimidating looking machines :noway: He also told me what ones to stay away from because of my knees. So tonight I start doing some strength training instead of just doing cardio.
I was up early yesterday, got most of my grocery shopping done, then to the Y, then to Costco and home to do a ton of cooking. I BBQ'd chicken, port chops and made a turkey meatloaf. Tomorrow morning before work I will combine all the ingredients for chicken stew in the slow cooker. All our meals are done for the week. I think this will work.
Sorry, I don't have the time to respond to the posts. I will tonight when I get home!
Thinking of you all.

Good Morning, My Friends! Just popping through to wish you all a happy Monday, and try to get my head into the right frame of mind to eat in a healthy way today.
I did not sleep well, lots of weird dreams. Linda talked about pain being worse at night, and I surely understand that. After a busy day my bad ankle will throb when I lie down in bed. It isn't pleasant and makes it difficult to sleep.
Today is an oil-change for the car day, and I hate spending money on things like that! But, unless I want to buy a horse, I had better take care of the car!
Ok- off to be efficient......boring, but efficient!

Well I don't know how I have managed to miss this thread, although the name Barbie does sound familiar, hope i'm not having a senior moment (actually i don't like that phrase its a bit demeaning)! Hope you will allow me to join you in our journey to better health. It would be lovely to share trials and tribulations with a similar age group who can have a different targets from younger MFP's.0

Just having a quieter moment while DH pretends to go for a walk in the park with DGS with Pooh in the buggy. I feel I have done my bit today.
What a delight DGS is. 2yrs 4 mnths. Lovely age. Never stops chattering, but in a lovely way. Can do imaginative play now, which is great fun. They've just stopped in the park for a sandwich. Who knew living rooms could be so much fun!
I have cancelled my France trip. This morning I came downstairs to find DH sobbing and trembling. He was hardly coherent - all because he thought he could not face the train trip today. He had not slept at all. It was as if he was in another world. I talked him down and said he had to come up to London with me. He thought he couldn't manage it, but of course he did and has been fine. Oh dear! Now he is so happy playing with DGS. It just takes him over at night, but he always manages to survive the day. Anyway, I wasn't convinced about the French trip myself so that's no problem and I have asked the owner to look for a week in the spring for us instead. He thinks he will be better in the lighter days and we can do a much shorter, faster crossing with a bit more driving the other end.
This morning the strange smell we have been noticing in the bedroom recently became considerably worse. I investigated and found the seal on the toilet to the sewer pipe was broken. DH wasn't really in a fit state to do anything so I got on my hands and knees and blocked it up with a cloth, wrapped it in a bin bag and gaffer taped it up. Smell much diminished! Plumber called for tomorrow. NSV in a way as last year I would not have been able to crawl around on my hands and knees or even reach round the back of the lavatory. It was good to be able to do that job myself.
I hope DH will contact his therapist now for a 'top up'. He is so annoyed at himself. During the day he can't imagine what he was thinking!
Love to all. Soon to set off for the train home. We will pick up supper at the station so DS doesn't have to cook for us. He is working late all this week with press nights and preparation for the big launch party on Saturday. All that and expecting a new baby. Hope it doesn't decide to come early! DDIL is well and got some work done today while we babysat.
Love to all, Heather in rainy London UK0 -
Good afternoon from HOT Nebraska. It is to start cooling off tomorrow. I am so looking forward to Fall. Love that time of year. It has been a busy last couple days. My friend Lee that just found out she has breast cancer. Well they did surgery two weeks ago and then they called her last week and she goes back in tomorrow to have more removed. I don't understand why they don't take the whole breast. She is a basket case. Last Friday I took her and her DH to Hastings (about 25 miles) to the eye doctor. He can not see to drive and she can't since the surgery. I was impressed with how fast they got him in and out. We were there less then an hour. I just feel helpless. I did talk her into calling her minster and he came out and talked with her. Said there is another lady in the church who went thru this and he gave her the number. I sure hope it helps. That has kept me busy and then on Saturday afternoon the DGDs Paytn and Addie and DILs and a friend we all went and had our toes done to celbrate my 100 pound loss. It was my first time and it was interesting. Now I have flowers painted on my toe nails. It was fun.
Pat-- Sounds like you and your friend had a very nice day. I hope they are checking into your friends care. I do not understand why people think it is OK to hurt people who can't protect themselves. I read a poem one time about an older person who wants people to remember they were someones daugther, girlfriend, wife, mother. It was very good.
Sue-- Hope your evening out was everything you hoped for. I enjoy watching plays.
Meg-- Congrates on the inches lost. I am sorry to hear about things with your DD#1. We had the same thing with our oldest DS. He didn't like the rules and thought he had all the answers. We try and be there for the kids and have even had several move back home. But not anymore we are there to listen and give advice when asked. I just wish they would listen and not make the same mistakes we made when we were younger. Hope you are getting the deal with your insurance worked out. I learned acouple years ago that we should have replacement insurance and I am so glad we did. We are still waiting for them to get the siding done on the house. They bought us a book acouple weeks ago to pick the color and type we want. DH called them today to see what the hold up is.
Renny-- Good news on the lab work and weight. One day at a time, I tell myself that everyday.
Heather--Post as often as you want. I find I learn so much from everyone. Hope DH is doing better. I understand things always seem worse at night. I will go to bed and then lay there for hours thinking about things and what I should do or what I have done wrong. Sometimes its things from years ago. I get so upset with myself. But the mind does its own thing.
Teri-- Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Sandy-- I am like you and like to get my Christmas shopping done early. With 27 grand babies I have to start early. I also enjoy being able to sit back and enjoy the season at Christmas. It is my favorite time of year. When DH and I first were married I told him that I do Christmas cards big time. Maybe only hear from them once a year, but I love it. Don't let the weight upset you. One week I will be up and down the next.
Syliva-- Congrates on not giving up your lane at swimming. That is most the reason I stopped going to the Y. They would let kids in and they jumped on people and took over the pool. I also mixed up a bag of the 321 cake. I enjoy being able to just have a little treat once in awhile. DH likes it with his ice cream.
Texasgall- DH and I watch NASCAR. We watch the national one I think it is. I would like to have DH go to a race sometime. DS#2 is checking into them going next year. We like Mark Martin and Toni Stewart. DD and BF like Jimming Johnson.
Nancy--You are so postive. Welcome.
Eileen- Congrates on two new GBs. I love being a grand parent. Our DS#3 called last night to tell us they are having a girl. They are very happy as they have three boys and this is the last one. They had a gender party and so they did not know till they cut the cake. I understand the doctor put girl down and sealed it and they took it to the bakey. They do things so different anymore. They live in Iowa so we were not there. They called us and were so excited.
Well have a great rest of the day and stay cool.
Blessed!

I did 2.5 miles today!!!!!!!!:drinker:  I know that some people like to exercise to the upbeat music and I have tried it. But I like my soft relaxing bedtime music. I try to make it so that it kind of puts me in a trance like when I having to have my MRIs but it doesn't work for long. But I feel really proud that I was able to increase. I just wish the scales would show something. Sometimes I wonder if I am slipping back closer to the 200s again. I told my husband today that waht I see in the mirror isn't waht I envisioned myself almost a year ago. Yes, I have had progress but I still look at my belly with disgust. My jeans tend to pull it all in and I look better. I sure hope that I can wear the two sweatshirts that was my goal for this winter. They were some Grandma shirts of my Moms, jsut the generic kind of Grandma sweatshirt but they were my Mom's and I want to wear them. This November 1st will be one year.
Welcome to our new members!!!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this message board and am hoping for a lot of support and motivation. I'm having such a hard time. I just can't seem to stay on track. My will power is very low and I am not losing any weight any longer. Seems I just don't care when I am faced with a temptation, and that is daily! How do I get recharged and find the strength to do this? I don't know! I'm a 50+er and seems a lot harder than ever before. I'm reading a lot of your posts and they are inspiring. Please help me get there!
My goal for September is to get reinspired and start eating healthy again and to do at least 1 day of exercise!
Thanks!

Hi y'all:-) so far so good keeping the 10,000 daily steps goal..even reached 15,500 steps yesterday:-) and this morning..I tackled my front flower beds..worked in them for 2 hr and 45 mins:-) 91 degrees w 100% humidity, heat index 102....by the time I slid into the house...my shirt actually made this nasty "plopping" sound when I finally got it off:-) tee hee..but it was worth it! And as for the core strengthening.....getting that in with yoga:-) no change in weight on Friday when I weighed but I am cool with that....so far LOL!
Thanks for being such a great group!! I so enjoy reading everyone's post and am glad to be a part this fine group:-)
Have a fantastic afternoon,

Quick post to wish everyone a Happy Monday and a good day on this journey. Welcome to all the newbies. It's always fun to have new voices and new stories.
Got my second massage this morning and it really helps. I did get a walk in yesterday but it was to a dvd inside as it was hotter outside than I thought. After exercising, I sat on ice for about 20 minutes. I think I'm on the road to recovery.

::flowerforyou: Michele, stay in the moment…..don’t make yourself crazy writing future chapters of your life with your son.
  Brandy is home from the vet. It appears to be arthritis. Brandy has a slightly deformed foot which makes her more prone than most to arthritis. The doctor gave us an anti-inflammatory med for a few days.....Jake is in charge of meds. She also has a soft lump on her tummy that we thought was probably fatty tissue (she has another one on her neck) so just to be sure, they did a needle sample and checked it under the microscope to be sure that it was just fat.....it was. So a hundred plus dollars later, all is fine. I don't know who was more nervous, Brandy or me. Brandy was pacing and shaking in the waiting room, but she got several treats so that helped her. I wanted to get up and walk around because walking calms me down but my sitting next to her, calms Brandy down, so I just sat.
:flowerforyou: Grandmallie, I read about lemon water in a yoga magazine so you are in good company with your morning drink.
:flowerforyou: Sylvia, never forget the number one rule about weight loss “Never compare your results to a man’s results”……..when Sasha was a puppy she chewed two books (one was a hardback from the library), a good pair of sandals, and a computer flash drive.
:flowerforyou: Linda, I’m sorry to hear that you are in pain but glad to hear that it’s not a serious injury.
:flowerforyou: Anamika, best wishes on your pushups and plank
:flowerforyou: Katla, I agree with you….I’m always looking for the thrifty way to do things----do it yourself, use materials you already have….good luck on your project….let us know how it’s going.
:flowerforyou: Jake just gave Brandy her pill…..he put it in peanut butter…..he gave Sasha some peanut butter, too…..he tried to give some to Bernie, the cat, but he turned up his nose at it.
:flowerforyou: Kayak_kutie, we bought a laptop a few years ago even though I thought we didn’t need it, and now I use it all the time while Jake uses the desktop computer.
:flowerforyou: Sandy, congrats on joining the Y
:flowerforyou: Moss11, welcome….I hope you will enjoy this thread as much as I have
 Heather, good for you cancelling the winter trip if DH is not comfortable with it…….you two will find something that works well for both of you….Jake and I had a trip planned for our anniversary in January and recently changed the plans because we realized that it wouldn’t be fun in the dark and cold of winter.
 Vicki, you are an awesome friend.
:flowerforyou: TracyB, welcome…..have you read “The Thin Commandments Diet”? I learned a lot about motivation and staying away from temptation in that book.
 Leslie, I admire you for working in your flower beds in all that heat.

So far day went well. Glad x ray didn't show bad news. Now I can treat it like a bruise or muscle whatever without worrying about doing more harm than good. Even went up town myself for my pills. It hurts but I must stop crying. It also hurts to be overweight.
So now I have two problems to deal with and I will deal with them.
Should get over this and start being myself soon I hope. I'm usually a busy body. This idleness is killing me. Been two weeks tomorrow. I just hate it. I'm not a good patient at best.
I won't start answering to every post just yet. But I will with time.
Thanks for all the concerns about my Butt LOL.0 -
To Ladies who are new at this...
Take my advice and take some before pictures and take your measurements now. If you don't you will wish you had later on. When I started this I refused to have a picture taken at my top weight, and I did not want to see my measurements. So now I am nearly half way to my goal and wish I had done it. I have a hard time seeing any progress and it would really help if I had those. What I see in the mirror is exactly what I saw over 70 pounds ago. So don't put it off. You will be glad later.
To everybody...
Today was such a good day. I did three reps on all my weight machines and did my laps in the pool. Then I came home to play with the world's most wonderful puppy. He's so much fun.
I hope everybody had that kind of day.

I think, I posted something earlier on here, but was probably not very inspiring. I am new, to the site, and I will keep plugging it, to the week is out.
I feel a bit like a fish out of water, mainly because I live in UK, and we look at slimming, to be combined with a healthy lifestyle. Our high streets are adorned with fitness clubs, swimming pools, and usually a village sports green. Our high street chemist, issues free health magazines. Our kids, are offered free school meals, and yet we hear about obesity in the media. I never see any obese people, not even any overweight people, who I think would benefit from loosing a few pounds, and I see a lot of people, everyday, as I have a customer facing role.
Needless, to say that I am shocked at the MFT members, basic lack of knowledge, and understanding, of the needs, that human beings require to live a happy and fulfilling life.
Ok, so I am not picture perfect, and my bum does look big in white slacks. It doesn't mean to say, that I will go on a hunger strike, to make my bum smaller. What, If my bum doesn't want to be smaller, then what?
The white slacks, will remain in the shop, and I will buy something more colourful. It's not a problem, as I am not going to walk around naked, anyhow (that's a different topic).
There's so many flattering ways to dress, and wearing tight fitting clothes, that need to be surgically removed, is not, but seem to be popular with the under twelve's.
To live your life, and share your experiences with others, is the priority with most people, that I meet. To think that life will only start, if you loose a certain amount of weight, could not be further from the truth. It, is up to you to find yourself, again. Take up a new hobby, and enjoy yourself. Treat yourself, and learn to love yourself, and before you know it, the weight that you don't need anymore will roll away, because you are having so much fun. It's true, laughter burns up more energy, then frowning. Just, try it sometime!0
