@shanaber thanks for the article and the pics!
@Laurz9191 good effort to keep going even though you weren't feeling it!
Got 8 miles in the hard way (treadmill). Just didn't want to deal with the strong north wind today.

@shanaber You did great doing what you could. I love all the pictures of the birds and Hobbes smelling the flowers if adorable!
Great run @tarun_yadavA after a weekend of not eating well and not feeling well. But, I hope you enjoyed your weekend!
Great treadmill run @Teresa502 . It was way too cold to run outside this morning.
Nice running in the chilly spring weather @spl8 and @kgirlhart .
@Laurz9191 Sometimes you just have to go with how you feel and forget about what the watch says. If you gave it your best, you did !
Glad you had a good run @Mari33a !
I did a interval run today. I cut the plan 5 min short...unless you count my walking as part of the low intensity, then I went 10 min over. LOL Anyway, I did a mile total for warm up and cool down. Then I did a warm up run/walk of 4.2/3.8 mph 10 min - walking when necessary to keep my HR between 120 and 130 bpm. I was going to try to do the intervals at 5.5/3.8 for 4/1 min, but 5.5 turned out to be a little too fast for me to maintain for 4 min. So, I experimented to find a pace that I felt was giving me the workout I needed. I think I wound up doing 5.5/5.0/3.8 mph for 2/2/3 min, 5.0/5.1/3.8 mph for 2/2/3 min, 3 x (5.2/3.8 mph for 4/3 min), 4.2/3.8 mph as needed to keep my HR between 120 and 140, then the last 6 min was at 4.5 mph. Ran a total of 4.50 miles in 1:00:33 min for an average pace of 13:27 min/mile (4.6 mph). My avg HR was 135 and max was 155 bpm. I was pleased with that.

Morning all
Got in my usual 9K5 -
Nice run @tarun_yadavA . You could probably use a rest day. How often do you normally take one?0

@quilteryoyo thank you!
1-2 a month.
Planning on running all of March, as April - away for 2 weeks & unlikely I'll get to run much (just hotel gyms)3 -
@tarun_yadavA - I am amazed you are able to still run when you feel so bad. Hope you are feeling better!
@spl8, @SummerSkier, @kgirlhart, et al - I think a lot of the US is getting hit by the repeated storms we are having. I hope things don't freeze and impact the 'spring' that already started!
Yesterday was very wet until late afternoon. Today we are getting slammed with heavy rain and high winds. Tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat of today until late afternoon. At times like this I wish I had a treadmill or access to a gym. Guess today will be a strength training day and maybe yoga tomorrow. I honestly can't remember the last time we had this much rain and it isn't over yet. There is more on the way they are saying but there are a few sunny days coming later this week.
Tomorrow is my DH's birthday and a big one. We are going out to dinner on Thursday when hopefully it will be nice enough to sit outside. Over the weekend his brother is throwing a party for him and I am baking a chocolate stout cake. If it turns out there will be cake porn 😁😁
After all our discussions of food lately I saw this article in the 6 Minute Mile newsletter and thought I would share. It is about Low Energy Availability and performance. I also read some of the articles linked within it and they are pretty interesting too.
And because I have had time to read and look at shoes, I ordered these using my REI member credits and the member 20% off coupon! Caution shoe porn below:I don't have them yet so just a stock photo

March 1 – 5.05 miles
March 4 – 12.01 miles
March 6 – 5.02 miles
March 8 – 5.09 miles
March 11 – 18.97 miles
March 15 – 5.14 miles
March 16 – 5.15 miles
March 18 – 8.02 miles
March 20 – 3.01 miles
March 21 – 5.01 miles
Total – 72.47 miles
Now today feels like a spring day out there. It was sunny and 52F when I finished up my lunch time run. Glorious! And, my Garmin told me I set 3 new records – fastest mile, fastest 5K and longest run yet! Ok, so I may have had to delete the app on my phone on Sunday and reinstall it because it would not sync….but still, it made smile to get those notifications. I need to have technical difficulties with it more often!
Cute shoes @shanaber! I’ve been considering order shoes with my member discount too. Happy Birthday to your DH. Mine was yesterday! I had dinner with friends that included a huge piece of cheesecake. It was soooo good! I will check out that article tonight.

Hello everyone,
Got in an easy 8km today including 4 strides. Tomorrow is just a short recovery run before doing a final short speed work session before the race on Sunday.
153.3/175kn so far for March.
Spoiler about this weekend’s disruption in my city.We are having a WWII bomb detonation day all day Saturday in my city (our 4th time in 2 years!), which means most of the city will be closed down, as a large section of the city will be evacuated and thus inaccessible until they finish detonating the bombs - which usually doesn’t happen until late into the night. Thousands have to evacuate their houses each time if they live within the bombs’ radius (luckily we are just outside it), but I will have to plan my running route accordingly- for example my main route passes right by the area. The train line is also shut down, and, as this is my preferred method to get to Sunday’s race, I really hope the trains will be up and running again by Sunday morning! The night from Saturday to Sunday is also when they change our clocks, so we will lose an hour that night too!4 -
@Laurz9191 hope there's not too much disruption for you...
@shanaber cake porn pics!!!! Lol, love it!!
Please post 🤤
@Teresa502 - happy belated birthday! Hope you had a lovely day!
Soooo what's everyone's favourite Cheesecake??
I'm gonna have one of these on my next trip to Cheesecake factory in a couple of weeks4 -
@shanaber I had read that article before. This is a difficult topic here with the context that though we're all runners, we probably actually came here because we were, or are, overweight. Which makes it even more important, but complicated, to listen to what the article is saying and avoid the perils of what can be a very serious issue.
I learned pretty quickly that I couldn't sustain the volume of training I do on 1300 net calories, which is what the formulas told me I needed to maintain. What I have yet to learn is exactly where the magic place is because either I'm underfuelling or I'm overfuelling and gaining 'fluff'.
Crazy week trying to get ready to leave for our trip on Friday, juggle teenager drama, training but trying not to overtrain and getting ahead with work to make up for the week I'll be off. At least it's taking my mind off the looming marathon. *gulp!*4 -
@shanaber We have had a hard freeze the last two nights, so if it hasn't killed stuff, it has at least slowed Spring down a bit. Record lows of the weekend. Record highs forecast for Thursday, I think. I am thankful for my treadmill. You are doing great! Happy birthday to your DH and love the shoes. Looking forward to some cake porn. Might be more interesting if it doesn't turn out.
Hahaha @Teresa502 . Kuddos are great to get. Happy Birthday to you and I love me some cheesecake!
Great running @Laurz9191 ! That's interesting about the bombs and a bit scary. Are they just finding them and detonating them where they are? Good luck getting to your race and hope you can get to bed early since you'll be losing an hour.
@tarun_yadavA That looks really delicious, but I am a plain old New York style cheesecake fan. If you want to drizzle some caramel on it, that's fantastic, but prefer plan to flavored ones.
Enjoy your trip @eleanorhawkins !
I did a treadmill run this morning. The plan called for 45 min low intensity (HR between 120 and 130 bpm). I walked a total of 1 mile for warm up and cool down. I ran 5 min at 4.2 mph, then did a run/walk at 4.5/3.8 mph to keep the HR where it needed to be (first 6 min was running, then mostly run/walk for 2/1 min) for 25 min, then ran a little over 5 min at 4.2 mph. Total was 2.50 miles in 35:03 min for an average pace of 14:01 min/mile. Avg HR was 124, max was 134 bpm.
This afternoon, my neighbor, W, and I mowed mom's lawn. I mostly rode the riding mower while he weed eat and did a lot of the push mowing. I did do some push mowing, but only 13:37 min worth. I counted the calories, but not the distance (was less than 0.2 min).

@Laurz9191 That's crazy about detonation day! Seems like they would be able to figure out how to disarm a WWII bomb these days. And yes that sucks having to plan around that to get to your race on top of losing an hour. Good luck!
Nice shoes @shanaber! I received my new pair today, and hopefully will get to use them in the morning.
@tarun_yadavA nice running and hope you enjoy the cheesecake. I've been to the Cheesecake Factory once, but didn't have cheesecake, but it looked really good on the surrounding tables 😁3 -

@eleanorhawkins - interesting that what you came away from the article with is so different from what I did. I thought his entire premise was that we should never eat too low and always be sure to fuel well. I don't think any endurance athlete can survive and excel on 1300 calories. He was actually disparaging of coaches that encourage their runners to eat less and be even more lean than they may already be at risk of their long term health and running ability. Maybe you read a different article? This one was just written on 03/14/23 and his previous articles (linked) are along the same lines of fuel your runs/workouts sufficiently. Don't limit carbs and eat enough protein. Which is basically what I was told by my nutritionist.2 -
Happy Birthday @Teresa502! I don't know about you but we have so many family members born in March!
@laurz9191 - that is crazy about the bomb detonation day and kind of scary! Also sad that they are still finding them after all of these years. My daughter was evacuated from her college when they found what they thought were undetonated bombs at a Howard Hughes site nearby. It was scary but ended up being nothing.
@quilteryoyo - you amaze me with all your activity, working, running, taking care of yards, etc.!
@tarun_yadavA - I am not a huge cheesecake fan. I like it but find it is really too rich for me. I can make one piece from Cheesecake Factory last me a week just having a bite here and there. I like regular plain NY cheesecake with fresh strawberries the best.
I took a video of the rain this afternoon. It was like this all day. Our patio flooded and there was a river running down our front yard. The streets were all flooded as were the freeways and it still hasn't stopped. @chris_in_cal - how was is down your way? I am hoping tomorrow won't be so bad!

@shanaber no, no, I completely agree with him, was just saying it's probably an even harder mindset for many here to embrace!
My 1300 calories is what MFP and other calculators think I need to maintain, and it's *kitten*! Just that runger with high volume training (for me) makes it hard to work out how much is actually too much.3 -
Morning all
Got in my usual 9K
@shanaber - wow. That is some un-stereotype California weather!
As for cheesecakes... Bone of contention with my wife too. We never split one! She likes Basque or those New York bake style ones. I don't. Too dense.
She says I don't like cheesecake really - I'm just a fan of cream cheese frosting! 🤷7 -
interesting article and I totally agree with the comments. I have been jogging/running since I was a teenager and found out that it was required for West Point. Prior to that my athletics were confined to things like high school field hockey, basketball and competitive junior tennis. Running was a while new ball game and one time around the track was harder than expected. I was not heavy at the time or trying to lose weight.
But over the years running became my "have to lose weight" thing and so I always seemed to be working out the hardest when I was on a diet. Which sucked. And the funny part is that altho mentally it helps with losing weight (suppresses appetite I think) unless you actually eat less you don't lose. The whole thing about outrunning the fork etc. I finally did figure that out about 6 years ago. I mean I knew it but I did not KNOW it. right? 🤷♀️
All this to say that for the past 5 almost 6 years now I have pretty much been in maintenance and running while FUELED is a ton more enjoyable than trying to lose weight. I don't know the answer to the long distance fueling/maintaining/losing but in my mind I have to separate things. When I want to drop some weight for the summer bikini season (mostly my weight likes my middle now 🤨) I have to just decide to eat less for a few weeks and suck up the runs. Honestly that is what I am doing right now. I think trying to TRAIN hard while in a deficit is just as the article states, NOT A GOOD THING for the present or long term.
I have seen quite a few posts about how do I lose weight while training for a marathon etc... I am not sure but to me I want to advise, lose the weight first, then train. and fuel the training.
All my maintenance is (which is also a shock to my stupid mind) is a smaller roller coaster of 5 pounds vs my yo yo all my life of 20-40 pounds over the years. And I am sure that was more than yall cared to know. 🙃😉✅ But is is fun for a few months to be in a small surplus and enjoy the energy.

Hm. Cheesecake. Another dessert. @tarun_yadavA, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you? Well, at least cheesecake is not my thing, so this round will not drive me nuts. (Just don't mention gelato.)5

@SummerSkier 100% agree! Either train for a marathon, or lose weight. Can't do both.
I put on about 3Lbs over the (incredibly long! 🤦) 5 weeks I trained for mine.
There are more Rest days than normal (from long runs), you're sore (so less mobile on said Rest Day) ... And your hunger goes through the roof. Not to mention the carb-loading too

@spl8 I'm not trolling I swear. 😂
@shanaber bought up chocolate stout cake, then @Teresa502 said she had a big piece of cheesecake on her bday!!
That said... Now you mention it... Pistachio Gelato 🍦
Mmmmmmm 🤤

Didn't post my run last night, but did 8 miles on the treadmill. Then did another 8 this morning outside. Yeah, kinda beat

@shanaber I read the article you posted. I chuckled a little as the author said, yep it's another article about the dangers of underfueling. It's such a hot topic right now, and I think ultimately a good thing for the sport. I will admit this is something I fell victim to and had to make purposeful adjustments to address. When I started losing weight, I heavily favored a higher protein diet. I felt more satiated and was able to slowly drop weight while not feeling hungry. I started running after my weight loss already started. At first, on low mileage with C25k and some fat left to burn, my food choices worked for me. But as I hit maintenance and was running more miles, it stopped working and it took a while for me to realize it. I wasn't "hungry" necessarily but, I had headaches. I was grumpy and tired. I realized I was craving all the carbs regularly for the first time in a really long time. I still eat a decent amount of protein - it's important for muscle recovery and building. But, I have added in quite a bit of carbs. On weeks where my menu is lighter on carbs (these days a coincidence and not a purposeful omission), the headaches return and I want candy! Now I recognize that for what it is and eat what I need. It's hard to make the shift to fueling for my sport after working to lose 50 lbs. I can totally see how people fall into a dangerous cycle of underfueling and disordered eating. It's easy to do.7
-
@tarun_yadavA Cheesecake Factory has so many options! Some of them are over the top and (I agree with your wife here) barely qualify as a cheesecake. But they are tasty. I like a cheesecake with lemon or fruit most of the time but sometimes, only chocolate will do!3

Spaced out yesterday and forgot to log my run, so logging 2 today. Yesterday's was nice and cool, very pleasant. And I registered for some fun races! My husband and I are going to the Wine & Dine weekend at disney world in November. I am running all the races (5k, 10k, and HM) and he is running the 5k and 10k. I'm glad he is excited to do these races and it will give him a bit of a carrot to stick with training. And it will be nice for the 2 of us to travel alone. We used to do that once a year or so but with covid and other kid issues, we haven't done it for a few years.
Today was humid and trending warmer. Even though it was short, it was just harder. But, I got it done before work, and that is always better then having to do it in the afternoon.
I need to get back to pilates. I'm going to try for a class this evening. I will probably be sore tomorrow, but the longer I wait the worse the pain will be!6 -
@eleanorhawkins - totally agree on the MFP and other calculators and I worry sometimes that they set people up to fail, especially if they are doing anything more than just sitting on the couch (that whole TDEE calculation is important).
@martaindale - I have always wanted to run the Disney Wine and Dine, not all 3 races though. I know one year they had one where you could run in both Disneyland and then Disney World and I thought that would be awesome. That will be so fun to have your husband run with you and also be there to cheer on your HM!
@tarun_yadavA - best gelato is found at a tiny place in a suburb of Florence, Italy. Dark, dark chocolate. YUM!
I agree too on eating and training for a marathon or even a HM but I think as the author and many of the studies mentioned, it is a very individual thing. I was working out with a trainer with 2 intentions: losing weight and building muscle. He did not encourage me to change/limit what I was eating (I eat pretty healthy in general) but to be aware of portion size. This was why I came to MFP. He then encouraged me to 'up my cardio' and give light running a try. I blame him for my running addiction 😁
Like @martaindale at some point I decided I needed to go into a deficit and eat more protein than carbs. I ended up in a pretty bad place with no energy, headaches and was so stressed from work and added stress to my body by not eating enough to support my training and long runs. At the time I was running 5 HMs a year. I was referred to a nutritionist and she found that my endocrine system was essentially a mess. She laid out an eating plan (based on calories and macro nutrients) centered around my training with more on heavy days and lower on rest days. It was something like 1500 cals on rest days (I was at 1200/1400 before) 1900 on single workout/easy run days and 2400 on long run/double workout days. She wanted me to eat basically 40% carbs, 35% protein and 25% fat. It was a lot and so much more than I had been eating. I was sure I was going to gain weight but I actually lost, and built more muscle and my running became enjoyable again.
I got in a strength workout yesterday. Upper body and core only as I am still babying my toe. Never thought I would miss doing planks but I look forward to being able to do them again. I also need to get back to doing strength workouts 2X/week like I used to. I could easily shoulder press 25s and now struggle to just do a few with 12s.
As much rain as we got yesterday, last night's storm was even more epic. It woke us up just after midnight sounding like our house was going to implode. Lightening and thunder along with hail and extremely heavy rain - I have never seen anything like it here. Going to take Hobbes out for at least a nice walk between storm cells.7 -
March 1 – 5.05 miles
March 4 – 12.01 miles
March 6 – 5.02 miles
March 8 – 5.09 miles
March 11 – 18.97 miles
March 15 – 5.14 miles

March 20 – 3.01 miles
March 21 – 5.01 miles
March 22 – 4.07 miles
Total – 76.54 miles
It was raining lightly when we ran this morning. The temp was a warm 52 though so it felt ok.
Goodness @Laurz9191 – a bomb detonation sounds scary enough. I can’t imagine trying to manage the logistics of a race around it. I’m surprised the city approved both to happen on the same weekend.
@Tarun_yadavA – I almost always get the same cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory on the rare occasions that I go. It is the Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Cheesecake. I still remember the first cheesecake I ever had from there. It was at the Chicago location and was the Godiva Chocolate – so good! Hello, my name is Teresa and I have a cheesecake problem...
@eleanorhawkins – I can’t wait to hear about your Camino walk! I’m going to be living vicariously through you next week.
@shanaber – That was a downpour. We had rain today but just light rain.
3 -
@teresa502 Reese's PB chocolate cheesecake sounds AMAZING! I a chocolate-PB combo.
@eleanorhawkins I somehow missed that your camino walk was next week. I have that on my someday list, so can't wait to hear about your experience.3 -
@Teresa502 The race I’m doing is in Hannover, which is a little over an hour drive away from my city. The race was planned way before my city knew they had to plan the detonation of most likely 3 bombs this time. They always try to make bomb detonations coincide with school breaks and the Easter vacation break starts Friday, so that some people will have left the city already. The bombs they have found in the past are unsafe to transport because they can’t be disarmed, so they have to do a controlled detonation involving lots of sandbags, water, and shipping containers filled with water.
@tarun_yadavA The cheesecake @teresa502 mentioned with the peanut butter sounds really good, but I would probably save the calories and opt for a small after eight mint gelato instead. Sorry @spl8- had to mention it .
@martaindale That’s really interesting what you said about the protein and carbs and the craving of carbs. That basically describes my fueling strategy. I generally try to listen to my body and throw it a bone, or two, or maybe even three when I’m really craving something. I try to eat lots of foods with higher level of proteins, but I also need carbs to feel satisfied. I always attempt to balance everything out and stop myself from going crazy (with the rungries) on the carbs.
@shanaber Good look with those storms! There must be a lot of flooding going on. Socal isn’t really made to handle that much rain! I have the issue on rest days, that my body still wants to eat the same amount as it does on training days. Maybe that would change if my training intensity were decreased?
At the moment I have been in “maintenance” for a little over half a year. I don’t really feel that I need to lose more weight (I lost a total of about 30 lbs). A half a year isn’t that long, so I’m just trying to make sure that I am in a sweet spot with training and diet so everything is sustainable in the long run. Like, if I were to not be training as intensely, I definitely would need to readjust my diet, but for now I just try to be healthy a lot if the time and weigh in regularly to make sure everything “checks out”. And, not getting pregnant again would help with the maintenance too .
I’m not planning on losing weight while training for my marathon, but would have nothing against gaining some more muscle .
Today was a recovery run for me. 5km at an average heart rate of 120. So far for March 158.3/175km.4 -
Hello everyone! No miles Sunday or Monday (unless you count carrying my bass from the back parking lot at the concert, since they want us to save the close parking for the audience). Yesterday, walked 2.2 miles with coworker after school.
Today ran 0.8 miles in my neighborhood. I wasn't really feeling it, and I left my headphones in my husband's car so I couldn't listen to my audiobook to distract me... So I gave up and came back home without much mileage. Since I didn't run for long, I decided to follow it up with 20 minutes on the elliptical to try to feel a little less sluggish. Normally, once I get going, I enjoy running with or without something to listen to, so I'm not sure why I wasn't up for it today. I guess tomorrow is always a new day to try again (but it is supposed to storm, so maybe not a good running day)!6 -
@Teresa502 @martaindale yeah, we'll be walking Saturday to Thursday. I can't get into the forums from my phone, will post photos on Strava. Weather forecast seems to be improving, we might not get rained on all the time, just some of it. I was looking forward to it being cold but looks unlikely now, d'oh lol.4
