Morning everyone
5Miler to kick-start the week!5 -
March 1 – 5.05 miles
March 4 – 12.01 miles
March 6 – 5.02 miles
We had a beautiful Spring day yesterday but it was a chilly 37 this morning when I ran. That moon though was just gorgeous!
@shanaber – Thanks for sharing those pictures. That area looks so beautiful. I also think the Brooks Ghost have a wider toe box, BUT I buy the wide width size so I’m sure that’s my determining factor. I also think the special editions are so cute, but they never come in wide width so I’m left envying others with “normal” size feet!
@quilteryoyo – What a great way to honor your anniversary. You are a trooper!
@sarahmartaindale – Congratulations on your PR. Your hard work and dedication are paying off. Biggest of hugs to you. As you and @eleanorhawkins know, running therapy is one of the best therapies for stress and worry and there is nothing better than a good talk with a running friend be it a virtual friend or a IRL friend.
You had a very active Sunday @Laurz9191!
@Mari33a – Ouch for getting caught out in the hail.

7 miles this morning. Felt like a Monday

Today, following my 10k plan, I did "surges." It felt so good running a little faster for little intervals. I am finally starting to feel like a runner again.8 -
Had a good run but we are to get snow showers until Thursday so I will probably use my spin bike for the next few days.
01/03 2.84 miles
04/03 2.56 miles
05/03 2.56 miles
06/03 3.03 miles
Total 10.99/30 miles
@martaindale - Congratulations on ur race on Saturday, it sounded like you were fully in control! And so sorry your family are going through such a stressful and worrying time

Today I did some Monday speed work in awful weather. You name it, snow, sleet, wind, and rain, it was all there! I was glad to be done with it. I did 8x 1 minute repeats, significantly faster than my target race pace with 3 minute easy recovery in between sets.
The other day I “accidentally” signed up for a 100k road bike race at the end of April, so I guess I will have to start training for that after my HM. I haven’t ridden my road bike since August, so it should be an interesting test to see how I hold up. There are several steep long climbs, which I hope I can get through and I am also a bit worried about being nervous about riding in a peloton. It will definitely be an adventure. I don’t have any road racing experience and in the several triathlons I have completed, there is no drafting allowed. It should be interesting. I will have to figure out refuelling, water, electrolytes, etc., on the bike. It should be an interesting cross training diversion from all the running .
My run today was 10.1k, bringing my total to 37.3/175km for March.7 -

Busy busy busy on Thursday and Friday. Worked out a little bite at home, but no running. Felt sick on Saturday (either a little cold or allergies), so tried to just take it easy that day. Yesterday still not 100%, so continued relaxing. Did a slow 2 mile walk that day.
Today I was back to running/walking intervals. 3 miles after school in the park where my husband coaches. I was so happy to see the daffodils starting to poke up through the ground. There are clumps of them everywhere along the trails in this park, and it's so cheery to see them in the spring.5 -

That’s so interesting that a brooks shoe fits your narrow high arched feet well. In general Brooks have one of the wider toe boxes on the market. It’s one of the reasons I liked them so much initially. My feet swell quite a bit in the heat, especially on longer runs and the Brooks never feel tight. By comparison, I have been given several pair of Saucony to try on over the years and every one of them are too narrow. I can feel the edges of the insole just standing there.
Hmm I guess I can see what you mean about the wider toe box. But the middle and heel are nice and narrow for me. I've never had shoes that i didn't have to pull the laces super tight to fit my foot, so I've been liking the brooks. And I don't mind a little extra space near my toes, if I can get a good fit everywhere else. Maybe it will keep me from getting blisters from my toes rubbing against the sides!1 -
March Goal: 115 Miles
3/1: 5.06 miles
3/2: 5.51 miles
3/3: 2.15 miles
3/4: 2.02 miles
3/5: 10.1 miles
3/6: 5.1 miles
29.84/115 miles completed for March
It was a really pleasant morning . It was 63°F with a light wind. I wore shorts and a tank top. The sun was just starting to come up when I got home. I ran 5 miles. I would have liked to run longer, but had to get ready for work.

Some extra room in the toes is a good thing for sure. It helps prevent some of the toe woes people were talking about earlier. The heel on the Brooks is really nice for me too. IDK if i have a narrow heel but I do think mine is a little shorter. One problem I run into is that some shoes come up too far and end up hitting in a weird spot on my achilles. The Brooks sit a little lower and the ghosts have good padding along the heel that makes them super comfy.2 -
I've been looking for shoes the last couple of weeks, and is it just me, or have the prices of shoes gone up significantly? I guess it is like everything else these days, but damn! I guess I am going to try to find some older models on clearance.
Got in 7 miles this morning. Felt quite a bit better.

I had an awful run today but I’m so happy I got through it. I am pretty sure I was mildly hypothermic at the end. I am used to running in cold temperatures now, but I don’t usually run when it is actually raining/snowing. Today it was a mixture of constant sleet, snow, and wind. Although I was wearing my standard winter clothes, I realised after about an hour that none of these clothes are waterproof! My jacket got soaked, my gloves were soaked, and my hands became numb. With a little over 5.5 k to go, I literally couldn’t run anymore because my body was so cold. Obviously, walking didn’t make it better. I was able to run a little bit of the way back to the car, but none of it seemed to warm me up and everything was very stiff and numb.
Worse case, if I had felt unable to continue, I could have flagged down a trash truck because I was near the city dump, but at that point I thought I could make it the last 3k back to the car, which I did. Tomorrow I am going to the gym to run in the treadmill and be nice and warm and bored!
I really wanted to get a long run in today, but honestly, I probably should have opted out. Thawing out in the car was very unpleasant, but after a nice bath and some tea I’m feeling better. Here’s to better weather! Next time I go out in those conditions, I need at least a waterproof jacket and waterproof gloves.
So today’s torture of a run was 16.27km of running (plus ca. 3k walking), bringing my March total so far to 53.6k/150k9 -

This! I looked at some shoes Sunday when I was out shopping with my mom. I remember @martaindale talking about how she liked her New Balance so I thought I would check them out. The first pair I looked at were $189 - which is over my running-is-cheap-exercise budget.3 -

Oh dear. I hope this accidentally signing up for stuff isn't contagious on here! :-) I like riding my road bike for cross training but I think the longest I have ridden is 40-something miles. There are only a few country roads that I will ride on. Around here, bicyclists are not respected by motorists and I hear stories of people getting hit to often. Or people throwing objects out of the car at them. I know you will do great because you are already thinking about a training plan!
Sorry about the cold run this morning. Seems like the only way I can get warm after one of those is a good hot shower.

Just a walk today. My coworker and I walk our campus every Tuesday, and try to do a few other days once it gets warm out. 1.5 miles on a cold, but sunny winter afternoon. Nice to get out and to have the time to decompress before going home.6

You're doing great @chris_in_cal !
Great running, as always @tarun_yadavA !
Thanks @Teresa502 ! Great running for you too! Tomorrow is going to be even chillier! Not sure I'm ready for freezing again.
Nice @spl8. I usually like those little spurts of speed too.
@Laurz9191 I guess you have joined the "accidently" signing up for a race club. Good luck with the bike riding. I hope you have good weather for training. Those conditions sound awful for today's run. I'm glad you were able to cut it a little short and had an out if you couldn't keep going. Be careful out there. I hope tomorrow's treadmill run goes well for you.
I'm glad you are feeling better @ScienceofTeaching ! Glad you are seeing signs of spring in your neck of the woods.
Glad today's run felt better for you @Scott6255 !
Mom had her yearly dermatology appointment today. It was close to lunch, so we wound up having Mexican before coming home. Needless to say, my tummy was full. So, when I got home, I took a nap.
When I got up, I went out for a driveway run. Temps were 63F (17.2C) when I started and 60F (15.5C) when I finished. The plan called for speed play - 45 min low intensity with 7x1 min high intensity. I counted my warm up and cool down walks as part of that time. They are low intensity (HR above110), especially up the hills on the driveway. I did about 4 min low intensity, then ran one min just about as fast as I could maintain for one min, then walked/slow run for about 2 min, until I got back to the flat part of my driveway, then ran another minute. Total run was 34:26 min and 2.50 miles. The average pace for my high intensity minutes was 9:59 min/mile. Not too bad for me. Avg HR was 141 and max was 161 bpm. I also walked one mile total for warm up and cool down.

I didn't really think the weather could be any better than yesterday, but I was wrong. It was even nicer today. The moon was really bright and there was no wind. It was about 60°F. I was able to wear shorts and a tank top and felt great. It was getting light out and I turned my noxgear off before I got home. It was a beautiful morning and I ran 5.25 miles. It may rain in the morning so I decided that will be my short, "rest day" run.

Good morning everyone... From a cold and snowy (!!) London
Got in a 9K!
Wet, slushy feet - all the things.
Bizarre March (!!) Weather here.
So weird. Chocolate Easter Eggs on the shelves in supermarkets here; Cricket (England's summer sport) season starts next month.9 -
March 1 – 5.05 miles
March 4 – 12.01 miles
March 6 – 5.02 miles
March 8 – 5.09 miles
Total – 27.17 miles
A chilly 32F this morning (at least no sleet or snow though @tarun_yadavA) but a beautiful sunrise. @ScienceofTeaching – I’ve been walking the past couple of weeks at lunch with a couple of co-workers and it makes such a difference to be able to get out and get some fresh air and sunshine. Unfortunately, next week looks wintery here again but that could always change.

@Teresa502 oh wow. Beautiful sunrise1
-
@Teresa502 That is a really really beautiful sunrise.
@tarun_yadavA It looks like my yesterday weather reached you today . Thanks for the perspective switch yesterday. I was upset that I didn’t get my planned 21k in and so the 16k felt like a failure until I read your words. Then I thought, well 16k definitely is not nothing, even if it wasn’t exactly the plan.
It’s been snowing here all day today, so no regrets that I worked out at the gym today after literally freezing yesterday. Bring on the spring weather! I got 10.2 km in, bringing my March total to 63.8/175km.3 -
Sounds like you are having amazing weather @kgirlhart . Great job on the early morning runs. The moon does look so pretty, but being in daycare, you know what it really means.
Great pace for those conditions @tarun_yadavA ! The weather is so bizarre everywhere this year. Sounds like those Easter Eggs may get frozen. LOL Stay safe and warm.
Great running and beautiful sunrise @Teresa502 !

@tarun_yadavA ugh snow, mmm Easter eggs. They've had them in the Iceland here a few weeks now, I'm carefully sending my husband there whenever I need anything I can't get elsewhere to avoid accidents involving Easter eggs falling into baskets. Dumb cause it's just chocolate and I could get that anywhere, at far less exorbitant prices at that, but there's just something special about Easter eggs (childhood memories I guess).
@Teresa502 very pretty sunrise!
I had a chat with my coach last night about the fact that I'm still sore and knackered after that race and really don't feel up to all the crazy long hard intervals and stuff on the training plan for my marathon. Luckily he basically told me ok, keep up the volume but reduce the intensity as much as you like, which cheered me up a bit. But then I saw on the plan this morning that it was hill repeats and for some reason decided I could/should do those. 4x2 minutes then 6x1 minutes as hard as possible. I didn't sprint them (there's no way I could sprint up a hill for 2 minutes even once atm!) and I focused on form to stop myself from thinking about trying to run fast. I survived, but damn it was hard work, and now my leg hurts again so really hope I haven't damaged anything. D'oh!
8 -
@quilteryoyo thank you ☺️
@Laurz9191 - you're killing it! Seriously. Don't be too hard on yourself! ☺️
@eleanorhawkins same! Something about Easter eggs and childhood memories! I'm a sucker for Cadburys Mini Eggs3 -
@Laurz9191 @tarun_yadavA Y’all keep warm! Cold and wet is a miserable combo. The weather has been truly bizarre lately. It’s in the mid 80’s here already. And 10 miles is a long run any day. Def don’t beat yourself up over that!
@Teresa502 Wow! Such a pretty sunrise!
@eleanorhawkins I feel the same about chocolate. There is something about holiday specific chocolate that is extra special. For Easter, my fav is the Cadbury cream egg. We even have a British store in our area that imports the “real” ones. They are particularly good.5 -
March total: 17.4/100 miles
3/4: 13.2 miles
3/8: 4.2 miles
It feels weird to be a week into this month and only having run twice. I took a few days off after my race to recover. I was sore for the first couple of days. Went on some walks to loosen things up but didn’t push it. Today I did my neighborhood trail. It was warm, humid, just blegh. I guess it’s time to just expect it to be hot so I can pleasantly surprised when it’s halfway decent temps. Legs felt ok, no weird pains, just a little tired. Time to get back on the routine.
Kid update:We expect they will be discharged on Saturday. I’m having mixed feelings about them coming home. On the one hand, I miss them. On the other, we have a lot of hard changes coming to our family that are going to make this kid really mad, so fights are coming. After the 1st attempt we put all our meds in lockboxes and started handing out pills dose by dose but generally trusting that they were taking them. Now, knowing that they will palm them we will have to hand them a pill at a time and watch them swallow every one. 2-3 times a day. And we have to talk with the school nurse to make sure she is actually watching the pill being taken. And we’re going to be forced into becoming nosy parents that search the bedroom since we found bottles of Tylenol they had purchased stashed in their drawers. They are getting to the age where we should be able to extend little freedoms but instead we are having to tighten down to make it harder for them to make rash decisions that could have very real long-term consequences.9
