Sorry I didn't check in over the weekend. We were at the park all day Saturday and yesterday was spent traveling, unpacking, doing laundry, etc. plus we lost that hour from the time change! Race report below for those interested.
On Saturday, I participated as part of a 2-person team in Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50k. There were 5 of us that traveled to Charleston for this annual event. This was the 8th year of the race and I think this made my 5th or 6th year participating. The race is in honor of Peyton Moore who passed away when he was 9 years old. Peyton was a local runner and track and field star. The race is organized by his parents and all proceeds are donated to local organizations. As I mentioned earlier, the race is a series of 5Ks run every hour on the hour at Laurel County Park. Everyone sets up tents and it’s one giant tailgate party with running mixed in. Food is provided throughout the day (bacon, potato chips, candy, PB&J sandwiches, PB pretzels, etc.) plus they have a BBQ food truck provide sandwiches at lunch and another truck provides ice slushies near the end. A coffee truck also sets up and provides free basic coffee plus sells the fancy stuff. Everything smoothed out with our 6th participant who ended up getting sick before we left; she was hoping to drive down and join us on Friday however, she had a rough Thursday night and just didn’t feel like it. So, we all pitched in and ran one extra loop so that her 2-person team would be able to finish. This team was officially not eligible to be a 2-person team, but we wanted to complete it anyway.
We drove down on Thursday arriving in time for a walk on the beach, dinner at a local seafood place and a trip to the grocery store. It rained most of the day on Friday so we had a lazy morning at the rental house, picked up our packets and then did some shopping. As I was loading the pop-up tent into the back of the mini-van on Friday night, I strained a muscle on the right side of my back. Running was ok on Saturday after I got going. The first few steps were pretty painful but thankfully it loosened up as the day progressed. It’s not quite back to normal but doing better.
The race began at 7:00 am. I ran loops 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Pretty much everyone walks the last loop whether it is their assigned leg or not so I walked the last one with my teammate and the rest of the crew. My results were: (1) 3.2 miles – 35:46; (2) 3.16 miles – 36:13; (3) 3.17 miles – 36:27; (5) 3.14 miles – 34:54; (7) 3.12 miles – 36:52; (9) 3.18 miles – 37:44. Our team placed 48 out of 76 in the 2-person relay with an overall moving time of 5:57 hours. The winning 2-person team had an overall moving time of 3:08 hours and they guy who won the solo category completed it in 3:20 hours.@Scott6255 – I’m so thankful that you found that toddler and saved her from something terrible. Bless you!
Shake out walk on the beach after traveling all day.

Pretty shoes @Laurz9191! I have a pair of Saucony trail shoes but haven’t tried their road shoes.
@quilteryoyo – Not a great week weather wise for getting out early! Where did our Spring weather go?
@katharmonic – It is fabulous to see you back with us but oh my goodness I’m so sorry about your diagnosis. We will all be here cheering you on every step of the way!

@Teresa502 congrats on your relay race! Looks like you all had a great time! And I feel for you regarding the non-running related back injury. I pulled something in my lower back while bowling 2 weeks ago and it still isn't 100%. Good that it didn't bother you much after you warmed up.2

I took a vacation day today and thought it would be nice to sleep in a little before I ran. But it was cold and windy and just nit very pleasant and I just ran 2 miles. We were planning to work in the yard today, and we did some, but I was disappointed that it was so cold and windy.
@Teresa502 Congrats on your race. I'm glad the back didn't cause you problems and hope it is 100% soon.
Nice shoes @Laurz9191.

Thanks for the warm welcome back and your support. Great to hear from you again, and some new faces. I've missed hearing what everyone is up to.
@Teresa502 Great job on your race. I remember you talking about that one before. It sounds like a cool event and I can imagine it being a blast. You kept up a good pace for running so many 5ks!
We are expecting 9-18" of snow overnight and through tomorrow. Happy spring break! I went to the grocery store today and wasn't even thinking about the storm, but everyone else was. Crazy long lines.
Oh and I ran for 20 minutes! So that's something No promises on tomorrow but I'm hoping to make it to yoga in the morning if the weather isn't too ridiculous.7 -
@katharmonic Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Iit sounds like you have a great attitude about it and some wonderful IRL friends (and all of us virtual ones here) to help you get through it. Please check in when you feel like it to let us know how you are doing. Prayers and all the good vibes for an quick and full recovery!
You are doing great @chris_in_cal !
Nice running @tarun_yadavA ! You're getting it done, even when you are tired and it's windy!
Nice intervals @Laurz9191 !
@Teresa502 You did great with that race. Love the pictures! Sorry your friend got sick and couldn't make it. I hope your back feels better and glad you were able to run. Yeah, It's Spring Break for the local schools, so it's always horrible weather. I was expecting it. LOL I'll be doing my "early" morning runs on the treadmill!
@kgirlhart Sorry you had disappointing weather for your vacation day.
I did manage to get up "early" this morning and exercise before I went into work. I walked one mile total for warm up and cool down, and did a run/walk for 5/1 min at 4.2-4.5/3.8, and finished at 4.6 mph. That totaled 31:26 min and 2.25 miles for an average pace of 13:58 min/mile. Avg HR was 132, with a max of 149 bpm. (The plan called for 45 min easy.)

Somehow the running Gods were looking down on me today...or maybe it was the perfect 57F with 12mph North wind, but I felt like I had a little more bounce in my step. According to Garmin this was the fastest 8 miles ever. My stride length was much longer than normal, combined with a slightly elevated cadence got me 8.15 miles @8.16/mi pace, with the last 1.2 miles @ 7.36/mi. Not sure where that came from 😁

Morning everyone!
Got in a 9K6 -
Wow @Scott6255 ! That's really speedy! Congrats on your 8 mile PR that felt sooooo goood.
Great run @tarun_yadavA . Sorry the weather was crappy.3 -

@katharmonic So glad to see you back! I am sorry to hear you have breast cancer. It sounds like you have a good group of friends there to get you on the road to recovery after surgery. I hope surgery goes well and you are feeling better soon!
@Laurz9191 Love the color on your new shoes. My shoes always end up dirty but when I first get them I avoid puddles and such too. I want a fe runs with pretty new shoes!
@Teresa502 It seems like it was a good call for your sick friend not to come. Luckily you guys had a big enough group to help her partner out. That race sounds like a fun time! You kept a really good pace for such a long day!
@Scott6255 Wow! Speedy!!
@tarun_yadavA Honestly don’t know who a few of those people are but there were definitely a few surprises in there. For instance, I knew George W was a runner but I didn’t know he was that quick. When he was president you saw news of him running and promoting exercise for health, but he always seemed like a pretty casual runner. At least to kid me. Also, when I see things like Pam Anderson saying she didn’t train I wonder how much of it is false modesty. She wasn’t lightening quick by any means but her time wasn’t a walking pace either and a marathon is not one of those things most people can just go do. As the times got faster down at the end, it did make me feel better to see that a lot of those were races people ran in their teens and 20’s! Some of them were seriously fast!6 -
March total: 37.5/100 miles
3/4: 13.2 miles
3/8: 4.2 miles
3/9: 4 miles
3/10: 5.1 miles
3/11: 6.9 miles
3/13: 4.1 miles
Yesterday’s run was loads better! I’m in the hill country and some cooler weather came in. It was upper 40’s and windy. Felt loads better than my last run despite the hills!
I learned a valuable lesson about the direction of my loop yesterday. I ran an out and back using part of a larger loop I have run before. The downhill on way out doesn’t feel very steep, but it is deceiving. I ran it uphill for the first time on my way back, discovered there is a strava segment there called the “The Beast”, and it is hard! The segment is a half mile with an average incline of 3.8%, totaling 100ft of elevation gain. I didn’t make it running all the way up. I was pretty close to the top when I realized I was basically running at a hiking pace, so I switched over to a hike. No point burning all that energy if I’m not going faster.
After my run and breakfast, the family started cleanup of the fallen branches around our property. We got a fair bit cleaned up and now the view out the kitchen window looks better. We still have a lot to do, but it feels better to see some progress.11 -

@martaindale yeah didn't think Pres Bush would be that quick! Knew he was teetotal and ran - but a casual one, as you put it.
Will Ferrell though... Serial marathon runner and sub-4 too. That was the shocker. I mean he's not fat or anything, but he's definitely not athletic looking either.
Kevin Hart at 4h"06 - I mean he's ripped and all that. But also impressive.

With our hiking holiday looming and work getting crazy, this week was going to be my last chance for a decent length long run. We get home 3 weeks out from my marathon, so whether I'll get another 18 or 20 miler in will depend on how my legs and I feel. I also had this month's challenge from my club's so-called Golden Series to do, which was a run with at least 600m of ascent and at least 10km long as fast as possible. I realised if I did one of those today I was highly unlikely to have the energy to do the other later in the week, so decided to just combine the two. So I headed up the mountain to do the challenge, then stopped for 5 minutes and had a flapjack, then did another 22km. I explored a new (for me) dirt road on the way down which added some more elevation I hadn't really wanted but helped get the distance I wanted, although I still had to tack on some extra loops on the road at the end.
Now I'm looking at all the work people have sent me while I was skiving this morning and wishing I I could go for a nap instead lol. So. Tired. Gonna be stiff tomorrow, too.9 -

Running tied together to 33 other people to form a human caterpillar sounds like a great race strategy!
Love the guys on both sides of the Victoria's Secret Angel model - she has their full attention! Of course if Ashton Kutcher or Ryan Reynolds were running beside me I would be looking their way also.2 -
I am so hopelessly behind here! I have skimmed through and read most everyone's posts so just a few comments on what I can remember.
@Laurz9191 - we do love some good shoe porn here! Love the color of your new shoes.
@martaindale - I hope your kid is doing better and I was happy that the school is showing them some grace in getting back to routine without putting even more stress on them. I think (hope) most schools are sensitive to how tough it has been for teens with the pandemic and all, on top of their normal teen growing pains and then especially for kids with anxiety already.
Welcome back @katharmonic! I am sad about the cancer diagnosis but so happy you have a great village there to help you through it. It makes a huge difference just to have that support system. Do you know yet if you will have to have radiation and/or chemo? I know that they have made great strides in how they treat it and it is not at all the way it used to be. Please keep in touch when you feel up to it and know we are all here for you too!
BTW - @Teresa502 has taken up the hike reporting while you have been away. Unfortunately no one has picked up the obstacle runs though 😁
Speaking of @teresa502 - Great race! Sounds and from the pictures looks like it was so much fun and you had great, consistent times for running so much! Hope your back feels better soon!
@Scott6255 - that is a great speedy run! Congratulations on the 8 mile PR!!
@martaindale - I am pretty sure you will be conquering that 'Beast' in no time!
@eleanorhawkins - I am amazed that you were able to combine those challenges into one run! Fantastic! You are really becoming a beast - in the best way possible!
@tarun_yadavA - I am surprised at some of those in the article too and there are many I don't know as well. I have read about a number of singers though who are runner's - Chris Martin of Coldplay and Mick Jagger are 2 that come to mind, I think Bruce Springsteen as well but not positive on that one. I have also run in some races that included celebrities but I have a difficult time remembering their names. I do remember meeting Meb couple of times at races in San Diego.
TLDR:The nail correction was interesting and my toe is healing well. Details under the splitOnly the numbing shot hurt and he had a trainee MA with him along with his regular MA. What was cool was he spent time explaining everything in detail for the trainee. I am sure he would not have done that if the trainee wasn't there. I did not watch and didn't feel a thing and it was over really quickly. He did show me the (large) piece he took off, the majority of which was under the skin. No wonder it hurt! I haven't had a lot of pain really even after. It has felt great. I don't think I realized how much the nail actually hurt before.I took a short walk over the weekend and had class with Hobbes last night. It felt ok but got sore and is still a little sore today. Hoping to get in a walk this morning and I may try running just a tiny bit to see how it does. Heavy rain is coming later this afternoon and all through tomorrow then we have a couple days break and more rain over the weekend and into next week. Sigh - we needed it just not so so much at once. Much of the are we visited just a little over a week ago, is now flooded with more rain hitting them too.
The night before the nail procedure I started having serious concerns about having the bunion fixed in May. You know the doubts: it isn't really that bad, how much worse could it really get, it really isn't that sore or stiff and probably the biggest one, I really don't want to have to be off my feet, no running, for more than a month. So I spoke to the MA about it when I was there. It was red and hurting from my earlier run that day so seemed like a good time to ask. She said the ones she didn't think should get it done are those just concerned about how their foot looks. I told her I didn't really care how it looked and didn't even realize what it was until I complained to my PCP about how sore it was.
I will have one of those knee scooter things so now I am trying to figure out if a will be able to get out with Hobbes for a 'walk' 😂

Also - Happy PI Day!
Mmmm- may need some pie today! 😋3 -
We had snow showers this morning but it cleared up to blue sky and light breeze so perfect for running but my energy was really low and I didn't enjoy it like I wanted to. Happy I got it done tho!

@martaindale hey Sarah... Saw this... Had to try!Too sweet!
@shanaber glad toe is healing.
Happy Pi Day!
Let's pivot from Easter chocolate to Pie... 😂5 -
@tarun_yadavA - I'm with you. I like the mini, hard shell eggs but wish they had a dark chocolate version (I know against everything Cadbury is all about). I have never seen a white chocolate egg like that one just the regular chocolate ones which are still too sweet! Also I would much prefer pie to candy any day! So pie it is!
It started raining much earlier than the forecasted 3pm but I decided to get out for a walk anyway, how bad could it be? Right?
Planned to keep it really short if my toe was hurting or the rain was miserable. It was raining pretty good but there was no wind really to speak of and at any other time it would have been fantastic for a rain run. It wasn't even cold - around 61F. My toe was a bit sore so I considered cutting it short at one point, but in typical runner mentality decided to go just a little further, up to the end of the street, then a bit more down to the next corner... HA! Toe felt good by then so even though not dressed for it, I decided to run a little. Ok that was pretty great, so ran some more, just a little run about a block each here and there with walking in-between. We were soaked when we got home but I was feeling so happy that we got out when we could! I am not sure how Hobbes felt about it but he does love his towel rub down afterwards. I think my toe is ready to run once the rain lets up and my schedule allows. That might not be until Friday unless I can sneak something in Thursday morning.7 -

Great run @martaindale . Hills can be so hard and I often find that I can walk faster than I am running them too. Glad you are getting some of the limbs cleaned up.
Nice running @eleanorhawkins ! Enjoy your hiking holiday!
@Mari33a Great getting out and getting it done when your energy is low.
@shanaber I didn't realize it was pi day today until they had Chicken Pot Pi at daycare for lunch. LOL Glad your toe did well with your rainy workout today.
@tarun_yadavA That does look good, but way too sweet.
Got up and got my run in before heading off to work. Today's plan called for intervals. I ran/walked 4/1 min at 4.2/3.8 mph, 2 x (4.5/3.8mph for 4/3 min), 2 x (5.0/3.8 mph for 4/3 min), 4.2 mph for 5:05 min. Total of 2.75 miles in 38:05 min for an average pace of 13:51 min/mile. I also walked one mile total for warm up and cool down. Avg HR was 127 with a max of 145 bpm. I wasn't sure what pace I could sustain for 4 min, so started with 4.5. That seemed a little easy, so did the last ones at 5.0. I could have probably gone a bit faster. Next time.
6 -
@shanaber at this time, they don't think I will need radiation or chemo, which is such good news. It all depends on the final pathology during surgery though so that could change. I am hopeful. Glad your toenail procedure went well. My sister had bunion surgery and was really happy she did. I think it would be worth it to get rid of that pain.
Thanks again to you all for your notes and good wishes. I took a snow day today - I think we had about 10" of snow. I did some stress-cleaning and had my pre-op phone call. It's all feeling very real now. I should have snowshoed a bit, it was a perfect day for that. But I did walk Stella when it was letting up and it was very pretty. I'll take spring now please though.8 -
I beat this week's atmospheric river by this -><- much. A nice dry warm run.

It was cold this morning at 39°F, but there was no wind and I had a nice run. I ran 5.25 miles. I didn't see any critters, but I did see a shooting star. It was dark the whole run. I was really enjoying the sun rising as I was coming home the last couple of weeks, but I guess it is back to having the entire run be dark.
@shanaber Glad the toenail is healing nicely.

@chris_in_cal - Great you missed the atmospheric river! We have had pouring rain all day and are now under a 'moderate' flood watch (possible threat to life or property). I don't think we have ever had one before at least not that I was aware of.
Hope you can get your nail corrected. I have to say I am surprised at how easy it has been with mine and how much better it feels.
@katharmonic - good luck with the surgery and I hope you don't need any further treatment! I was fortunate with mine and did not need anything else either other than more frequent check ups/mammograms.3 -
Morning all
Got in a 10K... Little bit extra to burn off that Cadburys Creme Egg
@SummerSkier just the one egg 😊
(They're not that big! 175 cals according to the Barcode scan!)
@quilteryoyo - yes, white chocolate that bit sweeter than milk chocolate, and with that syrupy goo (lack of better adjective there!) in the middle made it a bit too sweet for me!
@katharmonic hope surgery goes well 🙏
@teresa502 lol @ staring at Ryan Reynolds
@shanaber favourite pie is... ??3 -
Hello all!
I couldn’t go out yesterday, even though I wanted to! Today though I got in 13.1km. It felt nice and easy, even though the pace was a bit faster than my average easy run pace. That’s possibly a sign that the new shoes might be “faster” than my old ones. The weather was ok. It did hail quite a bit on me off and on, so I had putting on/taking off my running jacket, but it doesn’t hail very often here, so I found it interesting to run in. I am starting to feel ready for my race, just 1.5 weeks now!
I am at 107.8km / 175km for March.7
