Machka: Sorry your spouse had a melt down. You are doing a great job caring for him, loving him and also holding a job. What you said about high school not having to define a person's future...you gave math as an example.. was inspiring.
Katla: I hope Carmine has several friends. When my spouse passed recently 3 of my friends took me to dinner. We don't regularly stay in touch, but they were there for me in February!
RV Rita: I know it will be awhile before you move...but at least this time will give a chance to decide where you want to go.
Kylia: I hope everything is okay with your heart and that the tachycardia isn't a problem.
Anitanap2: Enjoy your new book! And work on getting strong!
I am still sore from squatting at my new volunteer position on Tues and Wed. To the point where I am taking Tylenol. I walked on the tread mill today but did not do the elliptical in order to rest those muscles. I do sit in the red recliner quite a bit and hope this changes in the future. I might try to add in some gardening next week, so that I move about a little more. Thank you to all that wished me well and had kind things to say about the loss of my husband.
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia
Rosemarie
You have just lost your husband!
Whatever you choose to do with your time, I wish for you for it to be based on your personal priorities and include self-nurturing activities, whatever those may be for you. And 2 miles on the treadmill is superb in my book. Well done!
Regular exercise is part of my self-nurturing and is high on my personal priority list...but I also must admit that getting my house excavated, emptied, spiffied up, and on the market needs to be a bit higher on my list than it is.
I know this because my house is intermittently chirping quietly in the background of my awareness. That “low battery” chirp is not going to go away, so I am gearing up to rearrange my schedule to get over there more than once a week.
I will be at peace once I rebalance, even though it will necessitate temporarily giving up some self-nurturing activities here at the Old Folks’ Home.
Not the exercise, though. If I don’t exercise, I don’t have energy to do things like work at the old house.
But I can give up jigsaw puzzle time, or TV time, or any number of other low priority activities to work on the house, and I will. Soon.

Machka May this weekend give your batteries a chance to recharge and your body a chance to reset.
Karen I love the "low battery chirp" reference! It fits perfectly for several scenarios currently in my life.
No pork for me any more. Ended up in shower last night with 2 Imodium after dinner. Ugh. Just not doing it any more.
Yesterday was just steady all day. SIL not there (surprise). I kept having to tell the mechanic that helps upfront to stay in the back unless I tell him I need help. I told him I would let him know if I needed help. The day before he got 1.5 billable hours done because if SIL gets two customers at once she gets overwhelmed. The shop needs him to stay in the back to get mowers done. Anyway, I handled it. I get into the rhythm and it just flows. Yes, I have to take lots of notes sometimes but I am more than capable of handling 3-4 customers. I do need to finish a few things this morning before work. SIL was taking off today too, but the furnace guys are going to be here this morning. We will see.
Funny- I sleep with grey bear and brown bear. They are fluffy aromatherapy bears. Grey bear was a gift from my DH last fall. Brown bear from my BFF 14 years ago. Well, we got back from my brother's house and the next morning I woke up with "seeds" in the bed. Initially, I freaked out trying to figure out where we picked up bugs! Then I put on my glasses and realized they were seeds. Where in the !! did seeds come from? I read the tags on my bears. Grey bear is filled with flax seeds! I checked him all over and could find no holes. I figured I was squishing them out like feathers from a pillow. Last night I found the hole in his backside. He got stitches this morning He was a brave bear! I am just happy to not wake up to seeds hopefully! My DH is like the princess and the pea, he felt them every morning! I only noticed when I made the bed. That is your Friday Funny!
Better get ready for work! Will be working all weekend again.
May we all take a page from the book of Destiny. Courage, positivity, and resilience. Just choose one or better yet all three. She is inspirational! Healing thoughts and prayers continue.

We are having dinner tonight at Oscar’s, the “fancy” restaurant here that has the reasonable prices. We asked 4 other couples to join us, so 10 altogether.
It’s been a struggle getting the arrangements made.
Apparently they are short on staff for tonight. Instead of arranging for more staff, or simply telling us they couldn’t accommodate us and working with us to choose another date, they accepted our reservation for 10 and have been moaning and groaning ever since.
First they said we couldn’t sit together, that they would have to seat us at 2 tables.
Then they said everybody had to have baked potato and asparagus for the sides.
Then they said "no appetizers".
Then they said we all had to have the same salad, either House or Caesar, but we all had to agree on which one.
Then they said we had to pick 2 desserts. When one of the choices was gelato, they said they couldn’t scoop gelato for several people because it was too labor intensive.
At that point, the 10 of us decided we would individually order our meals ahead of time from wherever we wanted to get food from, or bring food from home, and we reserved a room to eat in.
When I reserved the room, but before I canceled the Oscar’s reservation, our Activities Director Willa asked what we were planning to do in the reserved room. I told her the 10 of us were going to get together to talk and get better acquainted over a meal, and our reservation at Oscar’s had inadvertently become a burden for an overextended staff, so we were taking things into our own hands to remedy the situation.
It escalated from there - the next thing I knew, Charmaine, the Executive Director of the retirement community, was on the phone with me, and an hour later, the Dining Director Steven called and asked me to come to his office.
Everything is now resolved, and we are eating at Oscar’s, together at one table, and can order what we want. However, Steven couldn’t resist giving me crap about my input on an unrelated issue. It had to do with his Sunday Brunch policies, which had been the topic of conversation at a community meeting led by Charmaine a couple of weeks ago. Steven doesn’t want to have a dine-in Sunday Brunch. He wants to turn Sunday Brunch into strictly take-out. He won’t admit this in an open meeting, but he told me and my wife this 3 months ago when we first moved in, so I know it to be true. He is doing everything in his power to get his way by being obstructionist about policies concerning taking leftovers home (no doggy bags allowed on Sundays), or switching to normal weekday fare (no prime rib or shrimp), and any number of other deliberately resident-unfriendly policies. He won’t prevail, but he is punishing those of us who spoke up at the meeting. It’s ridiculous. We were all very polite and reasonable, and continue to be so. But I can’t help thinking that this latest kerfuffle over the Oscar’s reservation has to do with his peevishness, because the Oscar’s party includes several of us who spoke up about the Sunday Brunch policies at the community meeting. I’m beginning to think Steven is a petulant little boy. Unfortunate.
I have just about worn myself out with this stupidity the last 2 weeks.
Karen in Virginia11 -
Karen- That is just not acceptable behavior from the restaurant! I have never heard of such a thing and have worked in several restaurants. Wow! Just Wow! As for Steven, well, I deal with folks like him everyday and just shake my head.
Hugs!

Thank you ... thank you to many of you who wished me rest and recouperation. It has been a long and hugely stressful week.
We rarely eat pork or beef anymore, and if we do, it's a very small amount. There's no point eating something we're not that fond of and which doesn't sit all that well.

Karen - That's why I could never live in one of those communities. I like to have complete control over my choices and really can't be bothered with dealing with difficult people. A restaurant is there for my convenience, not mine for them. You are more patient than I could ever be. Plus meetings! You are supposed to be retired! Sounds like work!
Could you just get someone in to sort out your house? Or just sell it 'as is'. I've noticed that Americans seem to have to do up their houses to sell. We tend to just knock a bit off the price and do up the new place we are moving into. I couldn't get excited enough about doing up something I'd lost interest in.
Windy today. Very windy. We had rain overnight. I'm back to normal health wise. Did my exercises and my writing this morning. Hooray!
Rosemarie - I used to be very fat, unfit, and almost crippled. I was 62. My progress was slow. I lacked confidence in my body and in myself. I've built up exercise slowly over many years. I could never have done 2 miles on a treadmill then. I could barely climb into a car. It is never too late. I was 68 when I started 'running'. You are still in shock, grief and trauma. To be even standing is great going. Bravo!

I am looking forward to a good day and a fresh cup of coffee. Breakfast with friends is always nice.
I plan to spend time practicing yoga this morning in my room. I have my yoga mat ready to go and I look forward to stretching exercises. After that, I’ll see what comes next.

Hello, my darlin's,
Rain's coming in shortly, but if it follows the predictions, we will see only the northwestern edges of it. That beautiful scent in the dawn air of rain just departed and more coming in is filling the house through the open windows, and at 65 degrees, it's really lovely. Spring at its best, at least for this moment.
Tales of Lisa and Poo... TMIHad to go back and look, but I was at 145 the last day of February and 141 this morning. Am willing to call that good for maintenance mode. There are days I wonder why I think I have any control at all - my body knows what it wants, and it will be the weight that it wants, and any control I think I have over that is just an illusion.
I say this because yesterday, I was at 144, but it was one of the D-days (D for "doody" - Look, you either laugh at this stuff or they find you out in the woods following around behind the little animals.) The D-days are about once a week now. I can only get a few steps from the bathroom and then I'm headed right back. Hours of that are exhausting, at best.
Fortunately, on this side of D-day, I get a few days where I can actually leave the house and do things like get my hair cut, which I hope to do this morning.
I am trying to get the rhythm sorted out, but all the options are the nuclear options - imodium stops me up for days, and any form of laxative, even at a quarter of the dose, pushes me immediately into D-day, but in liquid form. Right now it's awful, but at least it's not exiting at 90 miles an hour and requiring hazmat cleanup protocols.
To add to that, I know, I know, I know that people who really want to help me feel better are going to suggest taking fiber. Fiber, no matter the ingredients, in almost any form, whether it's food, pills, chewables, dissolve in liquid, whatever, adds razor blade edges to D-days. After finding myself curled up on the bathroom tiles more than once, crying, I stopped doing that. Fiber is not the answer for me, but I'm awfully glad for you if it is the answer for you.
So, I'll continue to work on it. I have added a probiotic, but if it has made a difference, I can't tell it. I'm going to finish the bottle and see if there's a change when I stop.
If you braved all that, it my not sound like it, but the new medication really is helping. Some of the brain fog has lifted. Days that aren't like yesterday are really good days. I feel like myself for hours on end.
I do read everything y'all write, but of course I haven't written anything down to reply to anything. My brain fog has a lot to answer for. Sooooo many hugs to those who need them, and cheers for everyone who celebrates their own triumphs. Love y'all more than you know. Today is no patience day.....mechanics that don't write all the information on an invoice, mechanics that only order half the parts needed, just no patience.

I am sitting in my chair and looking out my windows. It’s windy outside & I’m happy to be inside. In the distance I see trucks & cars on the highway. There are more freight trucks than cars this morning. Trees nearby are blowing in the wind. I did my yoga exercises before breakfast. I hope this becomes a good day.

Katla, I had to stop teaching my line dance classes at the beginning of the pandemic and have been so grateful that I know enough dances and have enough music to be able to dance at home. That is just like you and your yoga. You learned enough from your classes to be able to do yoga on your own and recapture some of the magic of the practice. You have found a way to be OK in your changing circumstances.
Annie, you are doing great. Don't ever let the scale mess with your attitude. Just keep on doing what you know is right and you'll get the results you seek. It's heartbreaking to watch the changes in your parents. I am reminded of the time my mother called me "Mommy" because it seem to her that I was having to assume a parental role with her, It's a tough job, but you can do it.
Lisa,many hugs to you

Thanks for the post-nasal drip suggestions!
I am hesitant to use garlic pills on a regular basis. We were on a trip once and a guy in our group took them (supposedly to repel mosquitos) and he stunk.
I have been tested for allergies, and I have many. However, I've been taking an allergy pill and steroid nasal spray daily, for years, and they don't stop the dripping. I'd like to be off the steroid solution. I've been trying Musicnex and it helps a bit, but I don't think it's a long-term solution.
I will try Astepro.
A dental surgeon was diving with us on my trip earlier this month. He said there are procedures that can open the nasal passage non-surgically that can be done by a dental surgeon. His mentor actually has a practice very close to my house, which is coincidental since our fellow traveler was actually from Australia.
I don't know if I will try the dental procedure, but I think it's worth looking into. He guessed I had allergies, post-nasal drip, and congestion based SOLELY on the fact that I told him I am a bad sleeper.
The very negative of living where I live is year-round allergies!

Tina, I had an issue with this too. I went to an ENT and he ended up doing a nasal ablation (sp?) which stopped the nightly post nasal drip. Perhaps look into that for help. Nothing else I did worked except a decongestant nightly which is not good for my blood pressure.

Annie Tina is right. If you report it to the police immediately, they will help with the situation. Does your father have any type of dementia? My mother-in-law started showing signs of dementia, and we found out that she was being scammed by telephone order operators. As well as by mail. She was literally giving her money away. She handled her own check book, and we had no idea. We had to have a hard talk with her! We also took her checkbook away. Even people that she considered her friends were getting money from her and giving her sob stories. She even gave one of her credit cards to one of the ladies. Even if the guy is legitimate is your roof leaking? Did your dad call him? or did he just drop by and convinced your dad that he needed it replaced. Sorry I am harping on this a little. I was just so disgusted with the people that took advantage of my mother-in-law. It can even run deeper than that. My own sister committed credit card fraud not once, but twice on our mother. You talking to your dad is only protecting your mom and dad! He may be really angry like my mom was! I called social services and reported my sister. They sent out the police to talk with my mom and sister. She had to repay the credit card companies. But it had to be done! Sometimes it’s better to get social services involved. That’s what I had to do. I know one of the ladies mentioned elder abuse. They do have elder abuse hotline’s.

I have been successfully dropping ounces here and there this week. I now have lost 1.2 pounds this week. For a total of 5.2 pounds. I now have a little over 10 pounds to lose to get back down to what I was before I was assaulted and my shoulder was injured. I did have a little setback today with my kettle bell. I lifted it up and tweaked my back! Not my shoulder! But my lower back! I am laying on ice packs now. Praying that it will go away because we have to get ready for 10 guests for dinner. At least it’s not formal and my husband was a cook, and does most of the meal prep, probably all today!

Well I weighed myself again and now instead of up half a pound, I'm down seven tenths. Crazy scale. You all are right.
