Me too. I have only been once, Jan 1994, and I came away really appreciating the beauty of "Death Valley." It's a hackneyed expression but there is no place like it on earth.
Go if you can, preferably in mid-winter.4 -
Thank you everyone for the congratulations on the London marathon. I have to agree @polskagirl01 there is a touch of terrifying about attempting a marathon from where I am, it has taken a few days and I ready to create my plan.
Hope you are getting by in this heatwave @eleanorhawkins
Congratulation on 800 miles done @SummerSkier
Welcome @autumnsnow786
When you are in London you have to live it up. A little jealous of you @tarun_yadavA
Some great pics being posted.
Having done my first 4 miler in years on Thursday I missed today’s Park run and decided to go for the one hour run in the middle of the day as it nice and overcast. Made it in bright sunshine for most of the hour! Felt good though, 5 miles and 60 mins done.

I got the staples out this week and it makes movement SO much easier! 3 walks of increasing distance this week. Managed 2 miles with the pup today before it got super hot.
@martaindale - I am loving the pictures of your vacation! So fantastic! Sounds like you all are having a wonderful time despite the heat. What does the kid think of Rome and of Italy in general? Mine loved Italy although we didn't go to Rome. She was ready to just move/stay there forever.
@quilteryoyo - looks like you are having an awesome time with all of your extended family. So great that Tippy gets to go along too!
@chris_in_cal - Before I retired I used to get on conference calls when I was out running. Worked well as long as no one asked me a question. Of course we rarely did video calls and Zoom hadn't yet become a big thing (2019ish).
@Teresa502 - what a gorgeous sunrise and love the horses!
@Laurz9191 - I hope you have a good visit to Yosemite. I have seen some news here about it being very crowded with 1-2 hours to get into the park unless you very early. I think the national parks website has info on traffic and delays, etc..
@tarun_yadavA - I too aim amazed that you are able to run after a big night out. I have to say though that the few times I ran after having maybe a little too much wine the night before, I felt better after a run. Seemed to help 'sweat' the alcohol out 😂
Wind chimes - I also don't particularly like the high pitched tinkly ones, but I do like the bamboo or wooden ones. The seem to sound more natural.
Poptarts - I had never had them until I was in college (mom was a nutritionist so no pop tarts, no Twinkies, no sugared cereal, none of the store bought junk food). I don't particularly care for them now, they are just too sweet but if I crave one I get the unfrosted strawberry ones. Do you all toast them or eat them as is? I assume if they are taken back taking they will be eaten as is.
I have posted before about my friend and ultra runner, Rachel Bell Kelly. This weekend, well starting yesterday, she is running the Hardrock 100 2023! She didn't get in initially and was on the waitlist but she trained as if she was going to run it. As of now she is at mile 75! The course is daunting and I am amazed that anyone could manage all the hills (mountains really!). There isn't much elevation change where she lives so she had to be creative in her training and went a few time to other locations to train as well. I am watching her progress and cheering her on! I am sure she will post a blog about the race eventually!
This link shows the runners' progress but also has a visual of the elevations 😳
And this is the link to the race site

Guy from running club was doing a crazy ultra, 240km in the mountains 🤯 so naturally I was following along somewhat online. I couldn't get to sleep last night and suddenly remembered I hadn't checked in a while, and maybe he finished? Grabbed my phone, opened the link and he had been in 8th place (of 381 starters), top 7 had finished, but looking at the times, I thought, hmmm, he should be finishing right now. Clicked his name. He had just finished, within seconds of me checking. 35hr 15min and I can't even wrap my brain around that, but the finishing picture showed he obviously gave it all he had. It was fun to me that I remembered him as he was literally crossing the finish line. I can be a fan 🙂9

Great running @kgirlhart . Happy birthday to your great niece. Enjoy the party.
You're doing great @chris_in_cal !
Thanks @taurn_yadava ! So far, so good. You are doing great with your running, even after a binge night.
Thanks @Laurz9191 . Great run. Goldfish hug? They are NOT my favorite snack! Now, give me chips and French Onion Dip and I will binge til the cows come home.
@Teresa502 Great running. Beautiful pictures! Love that sunrise.
Look at you increasing your longest run by another mile @TheMrWobbly ! At this pace you'll have no problem being ready for the marathon! I'm sure it was hot, but the sky was beautiful! Love the shoe porn! You have a wonderful son!
So glad you are doing so well @shanaber ! I'll have to check out the link in a minute. Just checked and she's probably about ready for a down hill segment. I hope she finishes well.
Congrats to the guy from your running club @polskagirl01 ! That is just an amazing distance and amount of time running!

I had a really good run this morning. I wanted to get up early to beat the heat, but sleep won and I didn't get up until almost 7:30. It was 8:24 when I finally headed out. But it really worked out for the best. It was 81° F when I got up, but it dropped down to 78° and stayed there the whole run. It wasn't exactly cool, but it was definitely less hot than it has been. It was a little muggy, but there was some wind and it was overcast, so I didn't get too hot. I ran 10 miles. I saw a jackrabbit in the cemetery. And I saw my mother-in-law and stopped to help her pick up a potted plant on her porch that had been knocked over. I am glad I had a coolish run, because this afternoon the sun came out and it was 103° feels like 106°.
I liked Poptarts as a child, but as an adult I find them to be disappointing.

Morning all...
Got in 4.52M (at 09"05).
Will run tomorrow morning... Have a 5K fun run in Milwaukee on Wednesday... Will aim to squeeze in a 'run-see' in Montreal. Then that'll be me for awhile...11 -
Scheduled my speed session this week for today since it was going to be the coolest morning of the week. After the 1st 5 minutes it didn't feel any different than any of the other 80+ mornings. But I had 3 days off, so thought I would be OK. 6x3:00 intervals with 3:00 recovery. Averaged about 7:40/mi on the intervals; a little slower than the previous ones, but many ended up being on inclines, so I'm ok with that. Ended up doing 7 miles all together this morning with the WU/CD.9

Short miles this weekend but I’m still keeping my July streak alive. I had a family reunion on Saturday and ran 3.63 miles before preparing food and attending it. Yesterday mom and I strung, broke and canned 27 quarts of green beans. I got in an hour full body dumbbell workout first thing in the morning and while one canner was cooling down I went out to the local park and ran three loops on the trail. This morning I did a 50-minute back/biceps workout and then ran 4.58 miles.
@TheMrWobbly – I love your son’s gift and show of support for his dad’s running!
@shanaber – Glad you are progressing and able to get out for walks. Ultra endurance runners are in a class by themselves! Do you remember a year or two ago, we had a discussion here about the mindset that many of those runners have, including food addictions. There was a link to some research being discussed in a podcast. (Not suggesting that your friend has any demons she is running from – this just made me think of that podcast and discussion.) How exciting that she got into the race – looking at the results there was quite an impressive field from all over the world. I’m a big fan of Courtney Dauwalter and I saw she was the first female to finish in 26 hours! I can’t even stay awake that long let alone be running! Congratulations to Rachel!
Poptarts – I can take or leave them so I never buy them or pay any attention to them at the grocery store.
@kgirlhart – What a hot, hot day you had yesterday! Glad you got your run in early.
Safe travels and good luck with your race on Wednesday @tarun_yadavA.
Hope you had a great time in Austin @Scott6255 and enjoyed your little break from running. Good job on the speed work today.

It only made it to 53.3°C yesterday (128℉)
It's supposed to cool into the low 50s °C, the rest of the week.

I find this amusing.
I ran this 10k last year up by the Baltic Sea (it was a mistake health-wise, but the medals were cool), and can only describe it as a road race, partly on trails. Super flat, 2 loops with 50% on roads and 50% on a wooded coastal path. Organizers were clearly geared towards road runners. I remember laughing out loud because someone had spray-painted tree roots throughout the entire trail section with florescent paint. They're preparing for the race again, and now I have photographic evidence:I like both road racing and trail racing, but the trails are where my heart is ❤.
Course distance verification like that would also be a road-running thing. I wonder if any of the road runners doing this consider it a "trail race" though 🤔.7 -
Holy hell @chris_in_cal!! 130F is literal hell 🔥🔥 Hope everyone out there in the west are doing OK0
