For some people September is the other January--a time to make a clean start on something important. We have a new project at our house that requires time and patience and I am so glad to have all of you to support me during this difficult time. My challenge may be bigger or smaller than yours, but it is significant and having the support of others will help me.
Welcome to a place for support and encouragement. The name of the thread is "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
Be sure to bookmark the thread so you can find it again. Also sign your post with a name or nickname and a location, specific or general so we can more easily get to know you.
This is a fast moving thread so don't worry if you can't respond to all, just jump into whatever topic interests you and enjoy the camaraderie.

Thanks Barbie for starting our month off good.💖👍🏼
Its nice to feel happy again. My husband's birthday was Wednesday, and youngest son wished him Happy Birthday on Facebook.💖. It was nice to see that, and I told him in Messenger that I appreciated him doing that. Its the simplest of connections, and I am blessed to have them. We texted in Japanese to each other, and were discussing the way we loved Japan. He still practices his hour a day of Japanese which impresses me!
This weekend we should receive the futon we ordered for the sons to sleep on. It will be fun organizing their area.
We went grocery shopping today, and I broke down and bought a bucket with the mop spinners in it. Also bought a cleaner liquid the scent of lavender. I will wash the floors soon.
Tomorrow is my yearly eye appointment. Once I got the authorization of referral corrected to read ophthalmology instead of optometrist I was able to make an appointment. Doing eye tests, checking for glaucoma or cataracts is not part of a general optometrist, but an ophthalmologist. My general family practice doctor should have known that, but whatever.
Allie looks like you're enjoying yourself. 💖🤗. You deserve it!
Heather that crane looks precarious! I hope everything is going smoothly for them. I am sure his neighbors will appreciate the quiet once the builders are done.👍🏼

Worked, made yogurt for the IP, went in the pool then walked to Food Lion and the dollar store. Got a birthday card for Pete and since I was returning a $1.25 item, I also got Halloween cards. Made fudge for Vince and Jess if she wants some tomorrow
This lady’s brother died and he had a large train collection so Vince is helping her inventory them and today Trainz (in GA Carol) is going to pick them up. Then he’s supposed to go to the fair to help with the train layout.
They were calling for rain today...it’s sunny out.
Aiden – welcome! A friend’s son has that name. You’re only the second Aiden I’ve ever known
Lisa – Egg deserves extra treats. Tell him I said so (sending virtual catnip). Thanks for thinking about me during this hurricane. I’m so far inland that it’s sunny out.
Heather – what is “funny soup”?
Carla – welcome! I’m in Catawba County North Carolina
Rebecca – happy birthday to Lee
Allie – cute friend.
Heather – seeing that crane reminds me of when they installed the pool. They had the pool go right over the house! It WAS something to see, our one neighbor brought out her lawn chair to watch. Then when they put in the spa. It was upside down as they brought it over the house. I swear, upside down it looked like a spacecraft!

Thanks Barbie
This group is a wonderful place for women to feel safe and supported and to share our unique outlook on life and health. I appreciate your efforts in keeping us going every month.
September already. Fall is in the air!

Lisa-your raccoon start was a delightful story. I never thought of keeping a BB gun around for such use but good idea. I won't typically kill but will warn off. Haven't had raccoons here but even though I am in a residential neighborhood there are fields on each side within three block. I have seen the occasional coyote sauntering across the yard in the early morning on his way home.
Allie-your new friend is cute. If you fly out from the east coast of Fla (Orlando?) you should be ok. If not you can spend more time with cousin.
Heather-interbeing can work well. With its Buddhist influence it will still convey a spiritual tone but I like the connectedness of everything as a concept.
Barbara AHMOD-there are also many decent laptops for a good price-if you don't need the bells and whistles especially. Perhaps your old one can hang on for Black Friday!
Rosemarie-been forever since I knitted but my friends who are quite good have pulled more than one piece apart to start over. No shame!
Rebecca-optometrists here do all the basic eye tests-cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration. Go to ophthalmologist for treatment. House looks good!
Lanette-fall is indeed in the air.
Very busy/productive at work today. Several smaller but important tasks completed, Tomorrow is my work from home day. May take a couple of hours vacation and run over to casino in morning. Do not want to be there over holiday weekend. I will see how I feel in morning.
Off to get ready for bed. Steroids disrupting sleep a bit-a couple of more days. Will sleep when my body feels like it.
Take care all,

Hurricane missed us by many miles and very grateful. Only had scattered ran showers for a couple days. The rain helped take Temps down to low 90's with light breeze which was very nice. Busy day today. We had our grandson overnight and took him back late this afternoon in exchange for our grand-dogs. We babysit the pups too. Our little yorkie likes having them here.
Everyone many Blessings and a peaceful day and a peaceful sleep.

Had a great walk around the wetland. A lot of birds who weren't around much during the summer seem to be coming back. Saw an osprey for the first time along with my two families of swans, some pelicans, stilts, plovers, and even a vulture that circled me for a while. The weather was perfect with a nice breeze for most of the walk. It was high tide so I didn't walk the beach as much as I had wanted beings I had extra time today. Maybe tomorrow.
Finishing up the day with just over 13,500 steps.7 -
Barbie- Thank you for September thread.
Midnight on the ship and im just waking up to hit the bathroom .And back to sleep

Cindy - when we moved away from our parents and took their granddaughter’s away from them it hurt terribly. Unfortunately, there was no work so we had to move. My girls were so robbed of having a close relationship with their grandparents. We did what we thought was best for our family and we still stand by the decision. The guilt does get to me once in a while though.
I read everything yesterday but didn’t get my homework completed until 11pm so didn’t take time to respond.
Allie - I must have missed that you ran over your foot. That looks painful.
The moon is beautiful from your balcony though.
Is that your towel? It would have scared me, I’m sure.
Lisa - I love the raccoon story. It reminds me of home. Growing up we had to carefully open the door every time to watch for porcupines, skunks and raccoons.
I can’t wait to see your quilt.
I think I am going to attempt quilting next year. I have enough to learn this year. I have several blocks that my mother embroidered that I would like to get together.
Rosemarie - I tried knitting a few years ago and either added or dropped on every row. I just donated the yarn and needles a few months ago.
Heather - I hadn’t thought of putting all of my moisturizing creams in one bag. Good idea.
I invited the Grands out this weekend. It’s been a few weeks since we have seen them. Very unusual.
What an interesting afternoon with Edie. How old is she again? I bet Bea won’t believe for much longer. It all goes by so fast.
Annie - I understand your friend wanting to keep the geese from her yard, doing anything to them here is a criminal offence.
I don’t know if those people telling you to slam doors to get the bears attention was a friend, if they were, they sure had a poor idea of entertainment.
One thing I really enjoyed about our vacation this year was not having to worry about bears.
Katla - I’m so happy you are still having hummingbirds visit.
How are you and your dear husband?
Rebecca - Happy Birthday to Lee. Lovely gift for him. I would love someone to clean for me.
When are your sons coming?
Machka - Happy Spring!
I broke my 100% streak. The math lesson I had to plan I only got 14/15.
😂 it was fun while it lasted.
I completed the required course within this course today and am now Orton-Gillingham certified. Maybe I can do some tutoring with it this winter.
Tomorrow is the last day of this session and I think we are off Monday. I sure hope so.
Tomorrow after class I am going to do a major clean and put some Fall decor out. I like changing with the seasons. I have little things for each, except Christmas, I have a shed full for it.
I noticed the last few days that we were away I was not having pain in my back or hips. This includes the day we climbed to the coal mine. Yesterday I sat a lot because of the drive home, today I sat to get this course finished. It was mandatory to have completed by 830am tomorrow. I am in pain again this evening. So I went for a 2km walk. I am going to start working myself up again because I’m sure not going to get steps in just being at home going to school.
I can’t believe we are into September already! I need to buy a birthday present for our Grandson and he and I will decide if we are doing anything together. We share a birthday so we always do something on the actual day. I usually take him out for supper. 12 years goes by in a blink.

Thanks on the nice words about my home pics. Lee does say its too bare, but you know me, I like bare.🙃😂
Yes our insurance company wouldn't have paid the claims, and the eye place told me my referral needed to be changed. So actually getting a hold of my doctor was more troublesome than anything. Finally left them an email. It was maybe 2 weeks until it was put thru again. Annoying.

Its rare that I turn on my vacuum!.😂. There wasn't much change in the before and after of the livingroom, but in the seat cushions it looked like a whole cookie of crumbs were there. Our carpet is a light brown so on the plus side it hides the dirt well!
My youngest is planning on Nov and my eldest is Jan. I will be in a celebratory mood from September to February.💖. It will be hard to see both them go though.😥. Knowing we can video chat though makes the separation easier though.💖

10 Considerations If You're Struggling to Lose Weight
https://www.verywellfit.com/things-to-stop-doing-want-to-lose-weight-3496367
Most of my life, I have been slim and fit and very active.
However, in my mid-40s I started gaining weight.
December 2014, summer and some time off work meant that I had lots of time to exercise, so I did! And I lost some weight. But on Dec 23, they squeezed me into an appointment with a specialist, and I had surgery booked for early January - large polyps, which turned out to be precancerous, in my uterus. About a week after the surgery I was having a biopsy for a lump in my breast which turned out to be benign. I hit the highest weight I had ever been.
Mid-February 2015, I joined MFP and was on a mission to lose weight. Every single day with no breaks, I kept my intake at or slightly less than net 1250 calories a day for 15 weeks, and lost 15 kg. I took a 1-month break while travelling, and gained about 2 kg. I lost those 2 kg in the next few weeks. Then I stuck to net 1350 for the next 10 weeks and lost another 10 kg bringing me down to a weight I hadn't seen since I was in my early 30s before Christmas 2015. I weighed and logged everything I ate!! I also exercised a lot.
Starting in 2016, my husband and I increased the cycling we had been doing dramatically.
So it was not difficult to maintain my weight until March 2018 when my husband had an accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury. And then I let things with me go.
At the end of April/beginning of May 2023, I hit a new high weight! Yuck. So I've been working at it again, but this time, I have not been logging my food. I've just been eating more or less what I ate when I lost all the weight in 2015. And I've lost 5.4 kg.
Although, this week, I was up a tiny bit. Not sure if that was because I've been exercising more of it was because I was trying a new at-work snack (roasted chickpeas) which I won't likely get again. They taste great, but possibly too good.
Now that it is spring, hopefully we'll have more nice days so that I can walk more at lunch again.
Plus the sun sets at 5:45 pm now so we've got a hint of daylight in the evenings again. Soon evening walks might be possible.
I am only 56 and want to be slim and fit and active again.

Tracey - Enjoy your weekend with the grandkids.
Edie will be 10 at the end of September. She is a fount of interesting conversations. I love 'deep chat' so it's great. Time just flies.
I must say I was astonished at how difficult both DH and Edie found it to watch and follow a simple beginner video on how to start crochet. I am such a visual learner, so I just did exactly what the person on the screen was doing, but they couldn't seem to see it, especially DH. Edie did keep coming back for another try, but wanted to work it out for herself.
It was an interesting lesson for me in learning styles. I find often with DH, I explain something, but he gets a totally different idea of what I am talking about. I must not assume he has 'seen' it the same way I do. I have such a clear idea in my head, that I find it difficult to understand that the other person isn't seeing what I'm seeing. I think some people don't 'see' at all. I often find he is doing something completely different from what I have just explained.
He is getting very good at painting though. His new designs are terrific, all from scratch.
I'm going to miss the kids when they are back at school, especially Edie. We will see Bea on Tuesdays.

I've discovered, over the years, that some people don't "see" or "get" databases, and yet they make so much sense to me!
I've also discovered that I see, perceive, understand things upside down or backward to what other people do.
For example, there are a few cities which I've perceived to exist in a certain configuration and when I see them on a map, and in relation to other places, I discover they are exactly upside down to the way I've perceived them. Calgary, which I am quite familiar with, and Strasbourg, France are two examples.
Another example, I wrote some SQL code recently and a part of it wasn't working so I called over a colleague who is better at SQL than me. I was just missing a couple little things, but there was a part of the code that confused him and took him a few moments to figure out what I had done. He said it did make sense but he would have done it the opposite way. How I had it was backward to him.
Comments like that are not unusual to me.
In my previous job, I struggled for about 3 months to "see" how my difficult work colleague was looking at the data, and then it suddenly dawned on me that she was looking at it upside down! Or at least upside down to the way I work ... and actually upside down to the way databases work. Which brings me back to my first point that there are people who don't "see" or "get" databases.
Nevertheless, I say all that to say, it's not unusual that people see things differently.
Some of us also do things different upside down or the opposite way.
I'm ambidextrous or mixed dominant so some things I will do like a right-handed person and some things I will do like a left-handed person.
For example, when I was learning to cook, and I was doing the task of pouring water out of a pot and holding the lid against it so that the veggies didn't slide out, I really struggled with it and often burned myself with steam or dropped the whole thing. My mother already knew about my mixed dominance, so one day she was watching me struggle, and told me to put it down and switch hands. SO much easier!
Apparently I hang my clothes up like a left-handed person too. Used to drive my mother crazy because she liked everything in the coat closet facing the same way, and my stuff was always facing the opposite way.
I tend to play a lot of sports left-handed too.
So @cityjaneLondon next time they try crocheting, have them try doing it left-handed. You never know.

I find I'm standing more at work these days, and my back and hips seem to like it.

Tracey-breaking the streak had to happen some time! It is way ok that it did. The piece of paper at the end is what people will look for-very seldom are actual grades important. I think you are spot on about finding time to move during your day to keep back in shape. A sit/stand desk may be helpful-depending on type of computer you can sometimes improvise.
Heather-the construction crane pictures were impressive. I hope they can have most everything settled by the time children start school. DH picture is very nice-I like the colors and the overall feel.
Rebecca-insurance makes sense about doctors-every plan has different rules to follow. If you don't follow all of them you can end up paying more $$ for no really good reason.
Machka-we do all see things differently. Yesterday I injured as to location of room someone was talking about-I am very familiar with the building. Even when he drew a diagram I couldn't completely visualize. He left out a door I considered to be important to the picture. He said since it is usually open he doesn't consider it . . . perhaps there is a gender difference? I try to keep patience when probing for understanding.
I think steroid is helping knock back inflammation. I have a few more days to go on medications. I have knocked back walking to 20 minute stretches. Hopefully I can work back up because I do like the distance and help with calories but I will just have to monitor.
Was thinking of going off and hitting casino today but think I will work most of morning and take some time early this pm. I really need to finish back room and get other stuff caught up. With long weekend I can make some very good progress. Need to map out things that need done before selling house next year and start on them.
Off to do something to start my day. Stretches and a short walk are on agenda.
Take care all,

July Highlights
July disappeared in the blink of an eye.
* I did not exercise as much as I wanted because of my knee, but I did something most days ... especially more upper body weightlifting than usual.
* We did manage to cycle a 50 km ride before I realised that my knee injury wasn't just a bruise.
* Left arm/elbow just about healed.
* I lost another kg which isn't bad given how insanely busy the month was. So, I'm 5 kg down from my high point in mid-April.
* Added another southern continent bush in the garden bed I'm currently working on. It's one I've wanted for a while ... a Little Bibi!! https://www.pma.com.au/little-bibi
* Dug up the rest of the bulbs and I'm ready to plant them ... hopefully this weekend.
* Attended a Pop-Up Cafe featuring beekeeping.
* Attended a beekeeping webinar.
* Attended a calendar planning meeting for our long distance cycling club.
* Attended hockey matches that our son and daughter-in-law played in.
* Travelled to one of our favourite spots in northern Tasmania for a few days ... nice, quiet, relaxing.
* Some colouring and reading for pleasure.
* Read the Bible every day.
* Did not work on the online course I'm taking from a university in Melbourne. Kept meaning to, but so busy.
* Meeting, meeting, bow-beeting, banana-fana, fo-feeting, fee-fi mo-meeting. Meeeeeting!
* Lots of medical appointments.
* Dyed my hair dark brown.
It was another month of running from one thing to the next. I thought June and July would be slower more relaxed, winter months, but nope! It's full speed ahead!
August Highlights
August was ... intense!

* My sleep has been all over the place, and not enough.
* My annual cancer check was all good.
Environmental
* Not nearly enough time in the garden this month but I have started cleaning up the dry stream garden and laying down more rock. I'll post photos when I'm done.

September??
Well so far, I haven't booked something into just about every day like what happened with August!
Machka in Oz6 -
Good morning ladies -
Up at 2. Went to bed at 8:30 and will probably get a nap in today.
Cindy - glad to hear the hurricane wasn't damaging.
Rebecca - great job on the housecleaning, you are so organized and neat. I was happy to hear you'll be able to see both younger and older sons in the next 6 months. Good luck at the eye doc! Happy birthday to Lee!
Tracey - good job on finishing the course and being able to do tutoring. Happy Birthday early. What day is it?
Heather - Isn't it amazing that the art lessons you had on the cruise have given you, your DH and grands so much pleasure? Your DH's latest reminds me of a beautiful Christmas card I once received, same style. 3 wise men and a manger with baby Jesus. Nothing fussy. I recall the artist was from Africa. Those cranes looming over your son's house make me nervous, lol. Glad it all worked out.
Debbie - sounds like you had a wonderful walk, great to hear about birds returning. Do you run into many other people when you are walking? Do you ever fear for your safety? I picked up a cannister of pepper spray at the hardware store last week, should work good on dogs or people. I don't walk anywhere isolated, but during early morning there aren't many other folks around. DH would worry and told me to vary the times and my route a little so no one gets used to my habits.
About knitting- many years ago I taught myself to knit from illustrations in a magazine. I'm right handed, and I ended up knitting left-handed. My brain couldn't make the conversion. I dabbled in fair isle, cable, various ribbing, and circular knitting with double pointed needles. Did some sweaters and afgans, pot holders, crib blankets. I have lost dexterity in my right hand due to tendon surgery (carpal tunnel type of the thumb) and arthritis but really should pull out some yarn and knitting needles and put them where I can see them.
Reading - have any of you read the Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman? Very entertaining. If any of us get bored in our old age, we can walk into the CIA and apply to be spies. Why not?
Make it a fabulous day

Barbie: Thank you for the new thread.
I’m copying this over from August
Heather: We often get useful information from our grandchildren. Perhaps you could offer to help Edie create an art space in her room. It could double as a homework station. I’m not surprised about Edie and Johnny not ‘getting’ the crochet from the video. I learnt about learning styles when I did my teaching degree. Teachers need to present new material to students in a number of different ways. Love that new piece of Johnny’s. Good idea form Tracey
Rebecca: Your joy shines out from the page. Long may it continue.
I have my first group meeting of the new season after lunch today. Parchment Craft. Monday I have Creative Writing and Monday Painters. I have been doing my admin this week to get ready.
Time for lunch.

Happy September, my chickens,
Ginny – That’s all I could do when taking the steroids is let my body decide when it could sleep, because it was certainly not in my control! Was glad to see the back of them… That said, I do hope they’re helping that inflammation.
Machka – I don’t even know how to tell you how happy it makes me that you’re headed into spring as I’m sitting here with the first hint of cool fall mornings in the air. It gives me hope for our world – that women spread so far apart across the globe that we are not just in different time zones but different seasons can find this common ground to stand on. Here is the place where we can care for our own lives, the lives of those we love, and each other. It’s a joyful thing, this—happy spring, dear heart. And well done on the 5.4 kg loss!
Heather - Makes me think of your "interbeing" reference, that global sense of belonging. Love Johnny's newest work, very striking.
Debbie – I always wonder if I’m not moving fast enough when the vultures start checking me out! Your walk through the wetlands sounds absolutely wonderful.
Rebecca – That’s so funny, Amazon is supposed to deliver a spin mop today that I ordered a week ago. My daughter recommended the spin mop, and I have great faith in her Army-instilled need for things to be completely clean! Glad you're going to see both your youngest and eldest in the months to come--they'll be there before you know it!
Speaking of my daughter, I meant to say before we left August that she will be receiving an Army Commendation Medal for her actions in taking control of the situation with the older gentleman in the Salt Lake City airport, including performing CPR and the defibrillator and keeping him going until emergency services arrived. Always proud of Kelsey, and terribly pleased to see that the Army is too.
A rant on more on her ex-husband's shenanigans:Talked to Kels last night, because she just found out that her ex-husband filed paperwork last March to show that the kids live with him in order to obtain base housing in Georgia this summer. The divorce decree is very clear that Kelsey has primary custody, but somehow, he got both kids' domestic arrangements and medical paperwork information changed in the system to reflect them living at his Georgia on-base address, where he was not even entitled to live.
He also apparently threw in some gratuitous annoyance by changing all of Kelsey's addresses in that same system back to the Kansas base that she left nearly nine months ago. She reported it all to her first sergeant, who will deal with it at command level, and she is going to have to wade through the horrible mess of trying to get the Army systems (that don't always talk to each other) to understand both where she lives and that the kids live with her, not with him.
He might have finally overreached himself by defrauding the government and falsifying government documents, but he's a slippery little son-of-a-gun and may figure out a way to weasel out of it. Having him thrown out of the Army, or in jail, wouldn't be to the kids' benefit, but I'm hoping they at LEAST level a fine and a reduction in rank for obtaining benefits he wasn't entitled to, like base housing. She's already after him for more than $3,000 he owes for his share of childcare as well. The Army takes his child support payments out of his check automatically, but the childcare obligation is variable, so can't be done that way.
The cool mornings really are such an amazing thing, especially after 105 degree afternoons like yesterday. Means fall is coming, one of my two favorite seasons, and that summer is nearly over. Hope everyone's doing well... glad we've all made it to September.
Much love from the cool, serene and green River Valley of Arkansas,

Lisa - It's been cold here the last couple of days. I'm in a thermal long-sleeved vest and light sweater! Determined not to put on the heating yet! Fortunately, it's due to warm up over the weekend when DH has cricket.
I spent my book writing time this morning trying to explain what I mean by 'interbeing'. By writing about it, I'm beginning to understand it! I'm delving back into my philosophy degree, which is fun. And yes, union and community with others in the world is part of it. I'm having such fun.
