US199, one of the 3 routes into our remote rural area, has been closed since Aug 22 due to the Smith River complex of wild fires. It reopened Friday for commercial traffic only (so our Amazon shipments could get through ;>). This evening at 6pm it was reopened for public travel. This is huge as the detour (US101 N through Bandon) added 4 hours to any trip to or from US5 to the coast. Thank you firefighters and highway construction teams. There is still an area of one-way/piloted travel due to road conditions including burned out guardrails. Crescent City, Smith River, Ft. Dick, Hiouchi and Gasquet are still being powered by generator, repairing the transmission lines will take longer. Just thankful that I’ve heard of no loss of life.
Rori hope none of your friends impacted by the Maui wildfire disaster.
Cindy 4 lbs? well done!
Carol that is why I haven’t bought another Jeep. At not quite 4’11 with wonky knees getting up into my friiend’s Wrangler is funny to watch.

Another bicycle ride plus quite a bit of time in the garden.

Doing well so far! Exercise and PT done. Set off another carpet moth bomb. Washed two bath mats and a large towel. Started cleaning the cupboard under the sink. Poured boiling vinegar water over the weeds around the front garden manhole. (No pesticides) That had the advantage of descaling the kettle! Had another scrub at DH's shower. Mould nearly gone. I also cleaned his tooth mug. Made carrotte rapée for lunch with cauliflower rice, avocado and more salad. Bit of smoked chicken maybe? Popped out to the shops to get milk and kefir.
Now lying down and listening to 'The Archers'. Might try seeing if G wants to chat today.
While I was doing all this I watched The Blue Zones. Singapore sounds much like Brighton and Hove. Apparently we are the second healthiest place in the UK!
Later I will finish the cupboard under the sink. It's pretty grimy. While watching Clutterbug.

Heather UK I love Cass! She really helped me understand my organizing style. I am 90% ladybug with a little micro thrown in, though that may be more perfectionism rearring it's ugly head. I struggle to file things and put lids on things. DH is a Bee. Very micro but visual. I like things out of sight, he likes to see everything. I need to dump and move on while he likes file drawers. Still trying to blend our styles.
Watched the hummingbirds play last evening. I was sitting on the back porch near the feeder. Two females. One short beak chatty thing. The other a really long beak. They ate, chased, and buzzed around me for an hour. Once they collided so hard I heard it! They kept resting on my spinners which would then start to spin and off they would go. It was really relaxing! I will miss them while on vacation.
Been prepping for vacay. We leave today. I left shop as prepared as I can and not stressing over the work not done as I have time while on vacay to do it. Would prefer to not have to do it while gone but 4 deadlines while I am gone and just haven't had time or energy to totally catch up. Still, Sitting on porch in bathrobe with coffee and working or adult beverage in evening not bad working conditions. 👍 Will be walking lots. We eat my way while on vacay. Light breakfast then late lunch/early dinner. It suits me. May not have as many fruits/veggies but try to make good choices.
I have officially been married longer than first marriage. While it isn't always easy, it is somehow still better than my first. Funny because my first wasn't hard, just not right. Does that even make sense?
Rebecca Insurance companies do have too much power. I can't get recommended MRI because I haven't been to ER enough for migraines- smh. I use the ER for just emergencies. I may have to look for non insurance options to get it done. Won't be through our local hospital though as cash price starts at over $3000.
Gotta go water plants, shower, and pack clothes. Miata already loaded on trailer., truck fueled, and non clothes items packed in tubs. I have coloring books, magazines, cross stitch, laptop, work stuffs, tablet, and phone. Good thing is laundry at home caught up and washer/dryer at cabin so don't come home with lots of dirtiest.
Pip You are inspirational!
More later! Time for meds and shower.
Much love,
Kylia in Ohio ready for the mountains!5 -
From the lovely, cool, pre-dawn quiet of a Sunday morning in Arkansas,
Barbara AHMOD - I forgot to mention I loved the picture of Joe and was it Tumble? He looked so comfy.
Heather - The dinner sounds lovely - especially the prawn cocktail.
Allie - Glad you made it home OK, hope you feel better soon, dear heart.
Annie - Was going to suggest you read while you're on the stationary bike, as well. I know Barbie even knits while she's pedaling. I'm not sure I'm that coordinated, but I have been known to turn on a podcast while I'm on the elliptical.
Kylia - Sounds like a lovely, relaxing vacation ahead. Hope it's wonderful!
We've got almost every window open this morning, just a few fans going to circulate air, and it's wonderful. When Corey's home, we can open all the windows, as I can only reach certain ones without a ladder and a workout, so there's a lovely breeze moving through the house this morning. When it gets too warm about 10 or 11 a.m., we'll close them again and turn on the A/C, but it's so nice not to have the house shut up 24/7 for a while.
Saves a chunk on our electric bill, too, of course. Like you, Debbie, I'm a light-turner-outer, but unlike you, I've usually left them on in my absent-mindedness!
In another few weeks, I'll be able to take down the blackout curtains and let the light in all day again. I don't usually have curtains up at all, just a few windows with privacy film, but keeping the sun out in summer keeps the rooms up to 20 degrees cooler and helps the A/C work a lot less. Everything changes as the day goes on. Yesterday, I was wearing a hoodie to put the laundry out on the line in the early morning, and sweating in just a T-shirt when I brought it in later.
Ack! Started writing here about the latest things I'm reading and watching, and why I make those choices, and it ended up as 650 words, so I posted it over on Medium, instead. Glad to be writing, it centers me.
I have scribbled for so long, though, that the sun's come up!. Time to get outside and get some work done, now that Corey fixed my little chainsaw lopper. We picked up new chains for his big chainsaw, too, and he went out yesterday while it was about a hundred degrees outside and got a whole lot of downed wood cleaned up and then cut some more down. He's sleeping in this morning, which makes me happy. I'll see if I can't rope some of those big pieces and drag them to the burn pit with my little riding lawn mower.
Gotta get moving!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

Michele—DH has many health issues, including diabetes, MS, and heart problems. He is in a facility that gives him nursing care and transportation to Dr appointments. I have an apartment in another part of the building and can see him any time. I don’t have health problems. I’m lucky enough to spend time with him frequently every day. 😊

Barbara, I have always loved highway 199 and am sorry to hear about it being closed for wild fires. What a beautiful stretch of road and what an ordeal to have to go the long way around.
Jake watched the first two episodes of "Live to 100--lessons from the blue zones" and decided that we need to make some changes in how we eat. We modified our grocery order that we'll pick up this morning and talked about some new recipes we can fix. We made a plan for walking more together (I walk a lot, but he doesn't), and expressed gratitude for the spiritual community we are part of and the spiritual principles we live by.
Heather, I agree with you that just living to 100 isn't the goal, but living fit and healthy is where I want to be.
One of the spiritual principles I try to live by is "never miss an opportunity to keep my mouth shut".

It's Sunday!
Barbie - good knowing Bodhi's story. And good for you and Jake going thru with the adoption. He looks like a great companion for Bessie. He'll have the best home ever.
"never miss an opportunity to keep my mouth shut". True that! Glad to hear Jake wants to start walking.
Kim - how frustrating. Did the cat ever come in? When my old cat eventually runs out of lives, I'm not sure I'd get another one, and that's one of the reasons. If I was gone for a few days, I have emergency helpers for my dog and chickens (I could board the dog, Roger and Carol could get the eggs) but the cat, if she escaped from the shop, would be a whole different thing for someone to deal with.
Kylia - sending hugs your way, hope your vacation is relaxing. Those rotten migraines.
Barbara - very glad to hear that highway is open again.
Debbie - I've noticed I am leaving lights on! And I used to get after DH all the time when he'd forget. Worries me a little I'm starting to lose it.
I don't have Netflix, so not watching the Blue Zones* series, but have read the book several times and get their weekly email. Many good ideas for living a good, healthy life as we age. Keeping physically active and having social contacts is so important. **** I might sign up for a month just to watch it!****
It hit 90 here yesterday. I went on a laundry rampage, lol. Blankets, sheets, mattress covers - My deck is large and has a nice handrail, and it was the perfect place to drape bedding in the sun and wind, and things dried rapidly.
Time to get my sunrise walk in.
Make it a fabulous day!

Hi, I’m still here. Just been busy. Vince volunteered at the fair, he will again Sun and Mon. Just texted Denise that we will be there 9/12, 13, and leave 14. Finished the jigsaw puzzle. We went to the fair last night (Vince was just a spectator). Lectored at the church tonight (Sat). Worked at the soup kitchen yesterday. Tues was the last day this month for me to count the donations at the church. Worked Wed. because the store mgr was on vacation and the asst. mgr. Needed help. I think she does some prep on Wed. They got new shelves for the refrig at BK and I think right now I’ve got it figured out how we can do the prep. Going to run it by the store mgr. Monday. Been in the pool. Jess said she’ll probably come here next weekend (I’m guessing to use the pool)
Allie – I, too, missed that you ran over your foot. What happened? I’m so glad you had a great cruise. We have a southpaw, huh” This cruise may be at an end, but the memories never end
Been pulling weeds around the pool. See, we’re going to put down these blocks (yea, makes it easier for me to mow) but first I have to get rid of the weeds that are around the pool. If I do a little each night for a few nights, I’ll get it done. Took some plastic gloves from BK. Not that that’s a real expensive item, and not like I took a whole lot
Walking around the neighborhood. The other day took a walk to Food Lion and the dollar store. Needed to return an item at the dollar store so I got Halloween cards for everyone.
Lisa – congrats to you and your daughter. You certainly raised one really great gal. So sorry to hear her ex is giving problems.
REALLY not liking this getting dark so early stuff. M – you are so so lucky that you are starting summertime
Tracey – congrats on the certification. I knew you could do it!
Rita – Vince took his area 51 train to the fair one night and he said it was the hit of the night with the kids. When we went this one person had a spaceship and a cow would go up into it. I thought that was cool
Welcome everyone new!
Debbie – I love to marinate meat before grilling.
Barbie – I’m so glad to hear that you are going to adopt Bodhi. He’s one lucky pup, that’s for sure
Katie – I prefer the “hands and knees” to clean my floor. One time I was using Mop and Glo and Vince commented “it’s called MOP and Glow for a reason” because I was on my hands and knees
katla – how is your hubby? How often do you get to see him?
Pip – when will Bette be sold?
Since I don’t work tomorrow, the plan is to do a Kettleworx Cardio DVD. Speaking of Kettle Bells, anyone know where Mary is?
Hot flash coming on so time for frozen grapes!
Cindy – congrats on the loss. Awesome!
Rosa – glad the eye isn’t hurting you. It’ll get better
Carol – we used to have a little stool for my father to use to get up into our Ram Charger back in the day
Better get to bed.
Michele NC
Supposed to pick up today. They are coming from San Diego. I don’t consider it sold until I got the $$$$ in my hands, the title is given to them and it’s out of our garage .6 -
Kim-when my cats went out (they have stopped as they have gotten older) I had told friends watching them that if they got out and didn't come back to check the next day-I didn't expect them to stay all day waiting. Shoot-sometimes they would be out 3 days at a time wandering while I was here.
Barbara AHMOD-so good to hear roads are opening back up. I hope we are soon done with fires for this year. Hopefully this winter the weather will tone down all over the country-but it is hard to predict.
Kylia-enjoy your time in the mountains-get some rest! I do agree though, since I am doing work at home this weekend-being able to adjust the time, wear pjs, makes it easier! And with time I am out of office this week I have to get stuff done sometime!
Pip-I agree with you when something is sold.
So you all talking about decluttering have me working on that-really excited about one area I cleared up so walk way is completely clear. Now with your talk about Blue Zones I am Turing it on today for while I am ironing and doing some other sit down tasks.
Enjoy the day.

Good morning ladies!
Well, my sister is coming back sometime in early October. So maybe that will get me out of my slump. A reprise of the Sister Challenge, perhaps?
I read my first book, the Nora Roberts. It was great, with just a little quibble about the ending. I tried the Court of Thorns and Roses, but I'm not really into fantasy. Odd word for the genre, because the romance genre is about fantasizing, too. Anyway, on to the Patterson murder mysteries.
We are off to a slow start this morning. The lunch ritual waits on my mother to get dressed. She won't be able to eat her steak anyway, but we have the ritual.

They have chosen this long weekend(plus two days,) to close one of the major bridges in our area. They closed it Thursday and will open on Tuesday, for road work. Traffic has been terrible through town with people trying to find different routes. The Carquenez bridge is the main one from here towards SF. Everyone has to go over the Benicia bridge and then back on Hwy 4. So glad we didn't have to go down that way.
They might be sand pipers but not sure. They are that size when they are full grown, as much as I can tell, maybe a bit larger. So cute, what ever they are. I am going to stop one of the bird watchers next time I see them and ask them. Many out there with their binoculers(I need to bring a pair but usually don't take time to really stop and watch them, except my swans and humming birds that I can see up close.

Made it almost three hours before I ran out of gas... and accomplished what I'd planned to, which is a little cleanup along one fence line, and using the little lawn tractor to haul all the brush Corey downed yesterday. Below you can see Corey drinking a bottle of tea before he started in burning it all... The two piles nearest the camera were from this morning and the one furthest away was what I hauled on Friday.
There was also a good three or four days worth of firewood that came from some of it, as the main trunks he cut down were big enough to trim out and chop up for the winter. The rest is too small to work in the fireplace, so we're burning now. This is all to clear the space around an old stable that Cor wants to use for outdoor storage.
So many trees had grown up around it that it gets no sun and can't get dry in the rainy season. According to the tree rings, some are 25 or more years old, so it's been there for a long time. I say "stable," but it is only big enough to have held one horse, at most. It used to have electricity to it and everything, it's just a matter of digging it back out again.
Time for some lunch!
Later,
Love,
Lisa

Cat update - I went back 3 times spent about 2.5 hours there... no cat. (last time was 9-9:30pm) I kept texting with the owners and they said to leave it out overnight. I did but got little sleep. I am in a suburban area, but we have open space (a few thousand acres of private ranch land) just 1/2 mile away, so we have regular visits from fox, coyotes, and wild boar. The coyotes have had a bunch of kits this year and when it is quiet at night or early dawn you can hear them vocalizing. So 1:15 am I am awake to coyotes that sound so close - I could see 3-4 out the front window - I was not going out ! I just kept hoping that the cat was safe. This morning I found him in his front yard. He is hurt, limping but no broken skin. And will not let me get close, it took most of an hour of moving the food closer and closer to the front door, then in the house with me hiding behind the front door and watching until he was inside then closing the door quickly.
I told the parents that I was not letting that cat out again while they were gone.
this cat tends to spray, but never when I am there - I truly think it is because I clean the litter boxes 2 times a day - they do it 2 times a week. But for the extra time each day to clean boxes is far less then I spent yesterday and today dealing with getting the cat in. And of course the worry!

That is how I felt when every single day I walked the wetland for weeks, there was the one hummingbird sitting in the same little bush- Just stopped for a second, said Hi Dad, then thanked him for showing up, then continued my walk. Miss not seeing it each day. Glad I got to enjoy it while it lasted

Heather, I’ve been meaning to ask, since you’re a Cas fan: Which clutterbug are you? You have probably said, but I can’t remember. From looking at the pictures you post of your house, I would guess a cricket or a ladybug. I am a bee. I think a combination of Dana K White’s decluttering and Cas the Clutterbug’s organizing is the perfect storm for getting your house in order. I was a member of Dana’s super secret Facebook group for a while, but I just dropped my membership. I’m working on decluttering some of my automatic subscriptions. I do still belong to Take Your House Back, but I haven’t visited the site for a while.
Kim, your experience with cat sitting is why Dave and I are reluctant to travel together. I’m afraid your experience would be what happens with any cat sitter we might get, and we don’t want Dance staying out all night. He comes when we call him most of the time, but he is shy around everybody else, even our kids. Our neighbor travels all the time, and we feed her cat for her, but he is totally an outside cat. After losing Pip, I didn’t want to let Dance out at all, but Dave convinced me to let him out during the day. He does love our two-acres of woods.
I am reading Karin Slaughter’s newest book. It is good. I’m also reading a couple of series from Kindle Unlimited, one by Mary Stone and the other by Kay Somebody about a place in Georgia called Hart’s Ridge. They are okay and entertaining. The Hart’s Ridge series annoys me because there is a Hart County in Georgia, but it is NOT where she has it. She has it north of Atlanta, and it is east on the South Carolina border. Karin Slaughter also toys with the geography of Georgia, but I can handle it a little better.4 -
Lisa - stunning hummingbird photo. Nice photos of John & Soraya. So glad you and Corey were able to meet her. She and John look very happy together. Good job on the burn piles, impressive! Any pix of the stable? I love old farmsteads and the various little outbuildings they had here and there.
Kim - Glad the errant cat finally made it back home, even tho he was limping. That's cat life in the night-time fast lane. I don't think I could get away with changing my kitty's litter twice a week. If I don't get after it once a day she uses various places in the shop to make her deposits. Do you have anyone else in the neighborhood who could check on Levi for you if you are called away over night?
When we had the farm, DH and I made a run to Regina, Sask to pick up some sheep and had to stay overnight. General Patton at the wheel, lol. Anyhow we left a list for a neighbor kid on what little chores needed to be done, and actually did a walk-through, checked tasks off the list, etc. Well, when we got home - I can't remember specifically, but we could tell corners were cut or things left undone. All the critters made it fine, but it made me wonder why this was so complicated for a 12 year old who was otherwise bright and doing well in school, lol. After that, it was hard to pry DH away overnight and we made some long day trips to visit friends in Oregon a few times.
Ladies, a reminder - if you want to be included in the accountability post, please let me know the info today or first thing tomorrow.
It's overcast and chilly this afternoon. I was messing with the tarp over the chicken run a couple hours ago so let the girls run loose. They had their adventure, found some weed and green grass to peck at, then came back for a treat, perfectly happy to go through the gate and settle in for the afternoon. Still at 3 eggs most days, not sure what is holding up hen #4 Almy. As the days shorten, egg laying will fall off unless I light their coop and run and don't intend to. So she better get moving!
