NOVEMBER 2023 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the October 2023 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10900474/october-2023-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until November 1, 2023 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy

October Running Goal: 12 runs, 50 miles
0.7 lbs. October weight loss gain (242.3 lbs -> 243.0 lbs)
I'm Chris, I live in San Diego, California. Since covid I'm doing work from home. I've been on MFP since 2009 and during that time I've had some wild swings with health and fitness. My most fit years were 2010 and 2019, when I did lots of food tracking, Iyengar yoga, and running. This year 2023 is my post covid/get back to running year. This is my ninth month on this thread, it is great accountability. But month 9 sucked...I dropped the ball...but back at it.
I signed up for a Spring 2024 Half Marathon. This December I will start an overarching training plan for this race.
For this month and this autumn, I'm just going to strive for consistent distances, running every other day. It will be a couple of months of base miles. Each run distance will be one podcast worth.
I'll be focusing on the MFP food diary and dropping 10+ lbs.
Please connect on Garmin if you have one.

Thanks for setting us up for November @AlphaHowls !
Last 2 months of the year 🫡 only need 158 miles to complete RTY2023, so I'll say minimum 100 miles this month since all the holiday events and gatherings will be starting.7 -
Well, here it is folks! I am going to try something a little different. I will maintain my streak with at least 1 mile per day. From 5/1/2018 to current
https://www.runeveryday.com/usa-active-streaks.php
So, 30 miles is goal.
*crickets chirp*
Don't panic! I am not giving up long distance/endurance running.
If you are curious, click here, otherwise...I have an opportunity to work on/experiment (N=1)/research. I had the opportunity to meet the owner of Groll Fitness (Running Partner A's Sister in law). They work with B3 Blood Flow Restriction Bands. https://b3sciences.com/
I tested the bands last Saturday and very quickly ordered my own. My only data is me and it takes quite a bit to impress me. I did not read much of testimonies, just intrigued at first. Last Saturday, I worked out less than ten minutes with the bands. I was free from the pain in my legs, hip, back for about 18 hours. I worked my tail off in my yard, bending up and down. I raked, picked up leaves, walnuts and yard debris and mowed for 5 hours. I moved junk out of the basement on Sunday, up and down the stairs. This morning, the ache in the hip and hamstring/glutes is back.
I am still here, just want to see if I can get some improvement on me. I will post what is going on, if anyone decides to read about the journey.9 -
I'll maybe continue sporadically posting random non-running things in here on days when I have the mental energy and heart to check in with you all. No goals. Maybe I should look for the Facebook group, as I see myself checking in here less and less frequently, but don't wanna lose contact.
@AlphaHowls wow, that's going to be a big change for you! I'm curious as to how it will go with the bands and also the mental side of cutting mileage. I have a feeling you'll do great at it, because you seem to get out there and do what you set your mind to.
For my birthday, my husband booked me an hour-long Ayurvedic warm oil massage. It was a new experience for me, but good. It was more on the deep relaxation side of things, as opposed to the "evil-physio" stuff some of you are into 😁9 -

I understand not checking here, but really love it when you are here.

@AlphaHowls - thanks for setting up November! I will be interested in hearing how training with the bands affects your running endurance. When I was working with a trainer he always told me that strength training enhances running by making all the supportive core muscles that much stronger. Even strengthening your arms helps as they drive you forward especially on inclines.
@polska_girl - I hope you keep checking in here too. I am kind of in the same boat, just being able to walk some for at least 3 more months.
I am setting my walking goal to 20 miles for the month and a stretch goal of 25.8 -
@AlphaHowls Thanks for setting November up.
Good luck with all of you November plans- wven/especially non-running plans! @polskagirl01 - that kind of message sounds great! Also, I really enjoy reading your posts! @shanaber Yours too- and all the nice beach pictures.
Next month it’s going to get cold and dark here - it’s sometimes hard for me to get myself out the door, but when I do it generally feels much easier than in the summer. I’m going to say 200km for November.6 -
Setting my November goal at 100 miles again. I’m leaving for Aruba in the morning for a few days but other than the travel days, I plan to get some running in.
@AlphaHowls – I would love to hear about your experiment and the results.
Please continue to check in here and post @polskagirl01. I don’t do Facebook and would miss you! That massage sounds wonderful.
@Scott6255 - You have done so great with your 2023 goal! Almost there. Do you think you will do it again next year?4 -
@AlphaHowls – I am very intrigued with your band experiments. Would love to hear more!
@Teresa502 I was thinking about that...I feel like I want to, but part of me is saying it would be nice not to have to run 6 days a week for another year. So I'm really not sure.4 -
Setting my Nov goal of 60 miles and 300k steps!
I would like to add a goal of losing weight and I will try the ticker this month!!
6 -
Going to set my goal at 50. I only run 3 days a week, but may change that. I’m planning to up my mileage with the plan to run my first half marathon next year.7
-
I'm setting my goal for 80 miles for November. I'm going to focus on building up some distance this month. I'm not sure what that's going to look like, but I'll figure it out as I go. Especially since I didn't do much running at all in October.
I have a 5k Spartan race later this month. I feel good about the running, but know the obstacles will kick my butt.
I also have a 10k in January. I know if I focus the next couple of months, I'll be able to handle it. I've never done any races before and I'm excited to stick my toes in to get a feel for it. I'm hoping to build up to a half marathon next winter. A full marathon is a dream of mine, but I'm not sure how realistic it is the foreseeable future.9 -
I am in for 100 this month. I somehow managed to challenge myself to do 200 last month and succeed but will slow it down some now as that was really too much.
I am interesting in the research also but honestly it looks a little scarey to me 😳💪 working out with restricted blood flow to your muscles like that. I trust we will get an honest report from @AlphaHowls tho. 💖
I am so glad that Polska girl and Shanabar are still active and joining us. You both inspire me to do better with all the challenges you have ! ✅Oct finish!

My November goal is 45 Miles6

On to a new month!3
-
Hello everyone!
I wanted to get off to a good start in November, so I got a very wet and rainy 10km run done this morning. Some of the trees were absolutely beautiful. The ground is so full of leaves at the moment that I sometimes couldn’t tell where huge mud/water puddles were. However, that didn’t really bother me. I was glad to be out.
I listened to an audiobook today for the first time in about a year. It was a nice change from music. With an audiobook I have to concentrate more and listen- which tends to get me to actually run in the “correct“ heart rate zone. With music my mind wanders and sometimes I can work through problems or come up with ideas (unless I’m doing intervals and then I am just surviving to the end of the interval ). Anyways, I thought it was quite interesting observing what my mind is doing while running.
November- 10/200km.8 -
-
Nov total: 7.1/117 miles
11/1: 7.1 miles
Chilly speed work this morning. 1200m repeats. Overall, the workout went well. The first interval was a little slow but I don't think my 1 mile warm-up was quite enough. It took a while to get the pace down but the next 3 were easier. I'm still figuring out dressing. I think I underdressed just a little. Thinnish leggings, a long sleeve race shirt, and a buff over my ears. My fingers warmed up but my arms were tingling cold the entire run. The buff over my ears ended up wet because I sweat so easily and that got cold by the end. My skin was red under my tights when I got home and I was getting chilled by the end of my recovery blocks. Probably should have gone with a slightly thicker legging and a wool blend shirt to pull the sweat away from my arms. And a hat rather than the buff. Every year there is a relearning of appropriate dressing for cooler temp ranges.5 -
I also have a 10k in January. I know if I focus the next couple of months, I'll be able to handle it. I've never done any races before and I'm excited to stick my toes in to get a feel for it. I'm hoping to build up to a half marathon next winter. A full marathon is a dream of mine, but I'm not sure how realistic it is the foreseeable future.
Sounds like you have a good plan for a steady build up over the next year. You got this!
2 -
@AlphaHowls Keep us posted for sure. You too @polskagirl01 and @shanaber.
@Scott6255 I'm glad you are on track for RTY and totally understand wanting the flexibility to cut back a bit next year. You have done really well getting your runs in. I also found that committing to 6 days a week was too much for the long term. I can see doing it when I need to up the volume for race training but otherwise moving down to 5 days makes my schedule so much easier to manage.4 -
01.11 Wed 13°C 3.0km 24min 8:03/km
3.00km/80.5km
OMG, look at this! For most of you this will not be fast. For me it's the fastest run in years. Still not fit enough to run more than 3km, and HR topped out at 188, but working on it. At least I'm running substantially faster, with less effort than in ages.8 -

Went on my annual cemetery walk 🕯
My son and I just went to the small cemetery closest to home, and timed it so we got there just as it was getting dark. It's a small cemetery with lots of room to grow, so not the same effect that you have with the big crowded cemeteries here that look like they're on fire with all of the candles. It also wasn't cold enough this year to have the silence broken by glass candle-holders cracking, but it was was still peaceful. Families get together on this day and go pay respects to their departed relatives. We used headlamps for the walk home through the fields, so it was nice having to dig that out of the trail running supplies and use it.7 -
@Laurz9191 I am just going to leave it here because @tarun_yadavA has not found us yet that you really DO NOT want to know all the trash which runs thru my head when I am running. I like music because some of the 180 plus BPM temp really helps me to pick up the cadence and thus pace (short legs = need higher cadence to run faster). I can't really listen to audio books when I run but I definitely do when I am walking. not sure why. It's almost like I can't concentrate on the plot when running.
WOW! Polska that is an amazing tradition at the cemetary. 💖💖💖
Goal of 100
Got out and did a frosty 4.58 this morning. My polar chest strap hates the cold weather. I really think the 2 little snaps lose connection and it gives me HR in the 80's... yeah right. I might just give up on it and let my watch lie about my HR. Speaking of which as a reward for getting my 200 miles in I am going to a watch 9 and turning my old one in. For some reason it seems like after a few years they just do NOT hold the charge as much as they should anyway so good to get a refresh.

November
running goal 60 miles
Step goal 300000 steps
11/1 3.5 miles
Steps: 14000/300000

Aww, lovely! My local graveyard is now closed from 17:00. I really enjoyed running over it (there are historical areas where people don't come to remember) but now it's back to running through town. Oh well...3 -
@yirara you are doing great!
@polskagirl01 that sounds like a nice tradition.
Got 7 miles today. Basically same conditions as yesterday, although wind was much calmer. Same average HR, so overall effort the same, but pace was15-20 sec/mi faster. So gotta say it's the shoes. Endorphin Speed 2s today (older ones).
I am going to change my ticker to show the Run the Year 2023 total since I should hit it this month.
7 -
I look forward to reading about your journey @AlphaHowls .
Happy Belated Birthday @polskagirl01 . I hope you will continue to check in with us and let us know how you are doing. You have to let us know about your polar bear club experiences this winter. That sounds and looks like a great tradition and way to remember loved ones. I'm glad you and your son got in a nice walk too.
@Teresa502 Enjoy your trip to Aruba. I'll look forward to seeing pictures from your runs and adventures.
Nice run @Laurz9191 . Beautiful picture.
@martaindale Sounds like you had a good interval workout. It is hard to decide what to wear when the weather changes so drastically.
@yirara Congratulations on your improvements! You are doing great!
@SummerSkier Nice start to the month and that is a great way to reward yourself for 200 miles in Oct!
You are doing so well with your running @Scott6255 . Amazing mileage this year!

I am just now getting on and setting my goal for Nov. Since 90 miles seems to be a bit out of my reach, I'll stick with 80 mile total. That still pushes me to run more than I would otherwise on some days, and that is what I need. I'm not sure if I will continue to try to follow the HM plan or not. I just want to increase my long runs at least a couple of days to make sure that 10 miles is going to be doable for my race on 9 Dec.
1 Nov - Walked 2.00 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - treadmill
2.00/80 miles
I got called into work today, to cover for one of the teachers that was sick. So, plans changed and I only managed to get in a treadmill walk between work and church.
9 -
November Goal: 80 miles
11/1: 3 miles
Total: 3/80 miles completed
I didn't do much running in October. I was kinda dreading getting back into it, but it felt quite good to be moving again. It ended up being a very easy run, and I could have pushed a bit harder.8
