Ages 70+

Is there a group for women ages 70+? Or do I fit into this group?

I'm in my 80's and could definitely be part of a group of over 70 - .
Does anyone know how to actually start such a group?

And today I am fighting the urge to overeat. Will wait until time for dinner and eat only healthy food and healthy portions.

Nicky, I think we just have! About overeating.... I find if I keep sweets and carbohydrates down to an absolute minimum, that my appetite stays under better control. If I have trouble with hunger before dinner, I eat some protein, like hard boiled eggs, to hold me over.

Do you know how to bookmark this thread? It's helpful so you can easily find it and see if there are any new posts.

Protein is my appetite driver, too. I don't have a bad problem with sweets or chips or fries, but I can sure down a cup or so of nuts fast if I get "snacky".

Hi, Corina. I've tried different combinations of food and just now have started eating only meats, fruits, vegetables and a small amount of raw nuts. It's working too. I've only been back from my cruise for a week and have already lost what I gained (and I really let myself go wild and ate a lot!) I think I got all the splurge eating out of my system for a while. BTW, the cruise was my reward for all the hard work I'd done over the past 2 years and losing 66 pounds.

Sugars and carbs don't hold my hunger for very long but proteins do. Also, I practice time restricted eating... eating only twice a day at noon and 6 PM. I drink water except for 2 cups of coffee in the morning (down from3).

    What is your eating regimen?

    I like your attitude.
Tomorrow I WILL do better. I will eat enough to nourish my body without going overboard.

    Barb,
My eating is the polar opposite of a regimen. One day I'll eat mostly veggies for 800 calories, next day fast food all day for 2000 calories. No Discipline at all. I have every bit as big a problem with undereating as with overeating, cause I'm so hungry the next day I have no restraint at all. Today’s a "eat all of everything" day.

Hi Ann Liz. I'm here to eat for health more than weight loss. I've lost a lot over the years. Still a little overweight. Need to lose 10 pounds, would like to lose 20. 🙃

Corina, I'm not saying I have this eating thing licked but keeping my appetite under control is my aim. I find that sugar and high carbohydrate foods trigger my appetite (and I have no restraint then) so I have to stay away from them. My first meal is a big salad around noon and the second is meat and veggies between 6-8 PM. All whole foods. Fruits and nuts are considered treats, and I only have them occasionally.

I don't allow myself fast food or anything "artificial" (fake food from boxes). I just tell myself, "It's a no".

    Hi, Niki
I lost 60 pounds about 2004, gained 20 back, had some health problems, lost 30 thru illness in March and April of this year, kept it going for 15 or so more. I'm 7-8 pounds from 24.99 bmi, which is my goal for now. I'd also like to really "fit" in my new size 10 clothes I've been buying. They're just a bit too snug.
    I'm 74.

I’m happy to see this thread ‘emerging’. I’ve been on MFP almost daily for the last11 months, and have lost a lot of weight. I still have over 50 lbs. to lose. I started because of my increasing health issues, and I’m committed to continuing. I’m 72 years old.

Mel, Congratulations! It's harder to lose weight when we're our age but you have done it! I need to be more mobile and losing weight will help. I took a cruise earlier this month and had to use a rollator walker to get around. I want to go again next year (my reward for reaching my goal of -100 pounds) and to be able to walk on my own. Keep up the good work!

I bought two pork tenderloins yesterday (BOGO), cut them into medallion size pieces and zip lok bagged them into (8) half pound bags. They're in the freezer now and all I have to do is thaw out a bag when I want and pan fry them in coconut oil or bacon drippings. I had some last night, and they're as tender as filet mignon, only they're pork and lower in calories (4 oz = 120 cal) and very inexpensive. Less than $16 for all. That's just $2.00 @ bag and I can get 2 servings out of 1 bag so just $1 @serving.

Do you have any money saving tips?

Yes Barb, I do have some money saving tips. One is that I usually purchase a whole chicken and cut it up myself instead of getting the individual pieces. This way, I have plenty of chicken scraps to make homemade chicken broth as well as the various pieces. Since I cook for only me, the pieces last a while individually wrapped and frozen for cooking later.

That's a great tip! Thanks! I bought bagged chicken wings yesterday (BOGO). I froze one bag and cooked up the other bag in the crock pot, drained the broth (saved, froze it) and added Buffalo sauce... cooked a little longer. I'll have Buffalo wings today and freeze what I don't eat. Cost? About $3 @ meal.

Glad to see you posting. I hope this thread continues and people join in and contribute. I'll do my best.

Barb, that’s a good idea for making tender spicy chicken wings. Buffalo chicken wings are deep fried and tossed in a butter and hot pepper sauce and often times are way over fried so that they are more crunchy but then too dried out. Back when we used to make them at home I broiled them and skipped the butter in the sauce so they were a more healthful treat. It your crock pot method sounds like it would be a very succulent wing to nibble on.

Well, they didn't turn out so great. They needed to be a bit firmer so next time, I'll remove them from the crock pot when they're almost done, pour the sauce over them and either broil or bake them. I love wings so will keep experimenting until I get it right. Today I'm taking the chicken off the bone and putting it in a large tossed salad with shredded cheese.

@BarbMessimer ... I recall that when my mom made a roast chicken for our Sunday lunch, it was those tender wings that we kids always wanted and were always sad there were only 2 on a bird. I think the wings are still my favorite meat off any fowl.
But today I picked up some chicken Italian Sausage and am looking forward to sausage and peppers for a supper dish.
