Had to come in early this morning to visit with the night person. It is so hard to know what to do. Doing a lot of thinking and praying about it.
Not a lot else going on. Rained for several days and now the snow is almost all gone. Been a strange weather year.

Just checking in. Not a lot to say, but Lisa’s mention of the eclipse reminded me. My sister, mom, cousin and I are coming to Blytheville (not sure about spelling of that), supposedly for the eclipse, but also to visit my mother’s aunt. Is that town close to you? We will be there Saturday through Tuesday that first weekend in April.3

Eldest is flying into Sea-Tac on Sunday morning! Yay! Don't know how many bags he has yet, so not sure if the three of us plus him and his luggage will fit in our Chevy Spark. His seabag is most likely going to take up a seat. That's ok, youngest said he'd chill out at home until he can see his brother.
Later in February, we plan to go down to see middle son. It will be an expensive trip. I am annoyed that middle son and family has yet to want to or made plans to come visit us. I guess we travel down to them the 4+ hours one way trip, until we can't. The hotel, the rental car, the gas, the food. But to be honest we have to make the trip down, so the boys can visit with their grandma (Lee's mom). Its important. In the future, it would be nice for them to visit though. They would not have to spend any money on hotel, just gas. I have the room. They state they can't visit because they have the dogs. But they traveled passed us to Vancouver BC without the dogs, so that point is not a valid reason in my mind. Its about choices. And priorities. But its also about what they're comfortable doing in their lives. I get that.

Barbara-How about “move more better.”
Thinking-Generally I do a lot of thinking in the shower. I plan a lot of meals, create recipes, write drafts of my work, etc in there. It’s undistracted time.
Rebecca-I’m so glad you’re having time with the boys! I know you’ll enjoy every minute.
Tracey-If you were in Texas and didn’t see a tumbleweed or longhorn, you weren’t remote enough. I used to have to dodge tumbleweeds when driving. They can be bigger than the car! Both of these things are in abundance in west Texas.
For me-I’ll just keep swimming! It’s not raining now, but more will be here soon!

Unfortunately, Kay, no... Blytheville is almost as far away as you can get from us and still be in Arkansas! You're over on the far eastern border, on the Mississippi River, and I can just about throw a rock and hit Oklahoma on the western border of the state. It's you and my friend and about a million and a half other people coming here for the eclipse, by the way. Arkansas is just over 3 million population, so things are gonna get a little crowded...

That is a lot of people! All of Alberta is probably close to 4.8 million. In my rural area the population of our county is 4,100....our nearest town (where I go to pick up our mail) has a population of about 250. The next town is a bit bigger and has 2 grocery stores along with 5 liquor stores, a bank, school, library, hotel, 2 motels, hospital, dentist, restaurants, a couple of retail stores and a provincial building. I used to work at the provincial building for the department of agriculture. The building is now mostly vacant which is a shame. Population for the town is under 1,000.
Interesting to read about where people are from. Texas and Alberta are close to the same size. Had to look up where exactly Arkansas was situated. Knew approximately but not exactly what states were the borders. I recall on one of my trips (I think it was Portugal), a lady on the tour who was from California, had no idea where Alberta was. I don't think she even knew it was "somewhere" in Canada. I did tell her I knew exactly where California was.
Being lazy today...maybe not really lazy...I'll call it a thinking day. Should be working on my paperwork but feel my brain needs a break.

Worked then went to the orthopaedist. I really don’t feel my foot getting any better and I’ve been stretching it to beat the band. He said that one day in 3 or 4 months I’ll realize that my foot hasn’t been hurting when I walk. Oh great! So my advice to anyone is BE SURE TO STRETCH!!!!! Then went to Sam’s and picked up my glasses.
Made some coleslaw. See, they had this napa cabbage at the soup kitchen. I feel bad taking something that was donated for the needy, but if they put it out and no one takes it, then I don’t feel bad taking it. Anyway, I took the napa cabbage, made soup and now coleslaw. Never made coleslaw with napa cabbage so I guess we’ll find out how it is.
A tiny miracle here in NC – Vince is actually starting to pack. I’ve been packing for the past few days. I just put everything in a tub that I want to take. He’s usually the person who’ll pack like 2 days before we’re going to leave but he’s actually starting to pack today.
Barbara – surely you don’t mean a massage only on the calve?????? We leave Tuesday (yeaaaaaa) BK just confirmed that I was going to be there Monday, which I plan to be. I’ve taken off the 22nd but figure we’ll be back the 21st so I’ll text them that we came back a day earlier and if they want me, I’ll come in the next day. I’m sure they will, but it’ll put me in a better light offering the come in when they weren’t expecting it.

Lisa, I have absolutely zero interest in seeing the eclipse. The date was !00% totally my sister’s idea. My mother has been wanting to go to Arkansas to see her aunt for a while. Mama is 91, the aunt is 95 or 96 and has some memory issues. The daughter of the aunt has told mama twice that “it’s not a good time to visit” when she has expressed interest in coming to see her. I was outvoted 3 to 1 that we are doing this visit unannounced. My sister has rented us a house on Vrbo. They keep telling me it’s not like we are asking to stay with them or even for a meal. My mother wants one last visit with her aunt while she’s still up to making the 500 mile trip. The eclipse is supposedly our “cover story.” I am fully aware that we might be burning a bridge with the daughter. As I said, I was outvoted. It’s not like we’ve ever been close. I’m going along for the road trip with the girls and for my mother. It should be an interesting time. I’ll keep y’all updated on the drama, if there is any.7

Kay - So funny you'd say that - I also have zero interest in the eclipse, and tried my dead-level best to talk my friend out of the trip. They had already planned to come here in May with their RV, no joke, to stay for a week or so and just have a nice, long visit, which we haven't done in four years. However, they don't want to bring the RV through the mountain passes in early April, which is wise, so they're going to either fly or drive here just for the eclipse and then go back where they're staying in Arizona, and then come back again in May!
She's been my best friend for 40 years now, and she is still a force of nature. The woman is absolutely determined to see that blinking eclipse, and to do it here. I love the idea of seeing her twice in one year, that hasn't happened in decades. I just think it's odd to pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to stand outside in funny glasses for ten minutes (and it may well be cloudy) to watch the shadow of the moon pass over at 1750 miles an hour. I don't get it, but it's not my budget, either, so oh well. And I get to see my friend, so there's that.
Still weird, though.

Lisa and Katiebug, I was smiling from ear to ear listening to you talk about the eclipse - I am up for watching if I can do it from my backyard. But have never understood folks going hundreds of miles to see one. Especially when it could be cloudy, foggy, raining…… I do understand it could be an excuse, but wow! And showing up to see anyone elderly with no notice would be a dicey choice for sure!

Joy - how close is your closest neighbor? Miles and miles away? Do you and your DH ever have plans to move closer to a town or city? I still miss the wide open farmland where I grew up in Indiana. Other than traffic on the road sometimes, it was pretty quiet.

Kay - perhaps your mom's aunt's daughter (mom's cousin?) is dreading it because she's having health issues herself or is just plain overwhelmed. Wondering if she should bake something, clean the house, on and on..... I know the feeling. I'm with you. "Surprise" visits when specifically asked not to come is really pushing it. But, if your sisters and mom are bound and determined to stop in for a surprise visit, hopefully they'll consider stopping at a store and bringing a nice pie, some ice cream, paper plates and plastic cutlery.
Lisa - glad you'll be able to see your friend. Even though it will be a quick trip this time.
Rebecca - so nice all of your boys will be together soon and be able to see their grandmother too. Hopefully when the baby gets older Athena and family can travel north to visit you on Whidbey.
What I remember about the total eclipse here in the PNW several years ago is how the birds went eerily silent with the darkness and the street lights came on for about half an hour. I was in town at the time doing some Master Gardener work, stood on the sidewalk with the MG manager and secretary and just took it all in. I can understand how ancient people thought it was some kind of spiritual event. Maybe that's why people are drawn to it.

Walked, cleaned up the kitchen a bit. I just don’t like coming home after being away to a messy kitchen. Had dinner then worked on the x-stitch. I tell you, it’s so confusing, especially since the pattern is 12 pages that I had to tape together.

Machka - that makes sense on thinking to me. I find I don’t learn things well until I’ve had the opportunity to actually use the knowledge. I’ve been doing well in my classes, but if I was to be asked details on some of the stuff I learned in before Christmas I would need to go back and read it again. I don’t feel I have retained a lot.
I have worked in those situations most of my working life, it always seemed to be chasing your tail and if you just had time it would work better and in many cases cheaper.
I restart songs all the time.
Barbara - thanks for asking. No. I haven’t been successful in finding a new MD. The walk in clinic around the corner hasn’t been open for the last few weeks because there are no doctors. I don’t know what the solution is here, but it is getting dire for many.
Hopefully they get Joe’s vehicle straightened out soon. Is there any warranty on it?
Lisa - we used to put salt in our coffee at the restaurants I worked at. We have a Keurig too, but use the reusable pod with Folgers coffee. I’m going to try that.
I don’t know if you remember the card I made for Lauryn for her birthday, but the little book I made on the cover was words from Little Women. It’s considered public domain now, so I guess that’s why they had scrapbook paper with parts of it written on it.
I can’t wait to see your mural, it shouldn’t be that hard to scrub if the need ever arises.
Lanette - it’s good you stay outside with your girls.
Rita - I would love to come to New Mexico. On that trip I mentioned about going to Texas we went through New Mexico. It was one of the most beautiful drives.
I took I think it was 7 rolls of 36 exposure films on that trip. We left Toronto went to somewhere in Northern California, Compton and spent 4 days in Old Sacramento. We then drive back to Toronto and on to New Brunswick.
Rebecca - you are entitled to be upset that they don’t visit you. I would be too. Have you asked them recently why they don’t?
So exciting that you’ll have the whole family together. This will be the first time one son meets his niece and nephew isn’t it? And the other the nephew?

Michele - I hope it heals that quickly for you. Mine has been “acting up” with that callous type thing since the summer. I ignored it too long and have been in a lot of pain since November.
I usually pack the night before I leave to go somewhere.
My BFF is going to be here during the eclipse, funnily enough I saw that one of the best places to see it in Canada was over the county in NB she’s coming from.
After class today, he gave us an assignment that was due at noon, so I did that then I made a shirt for a 9 year old that’s in a cubing competition this weekend, picked up my paint. Moved most things out of the paint area. Then went to ceramics.
I only have a few things left to do on my snowman.

Just completed 5 days in a row at work for the first time since the beginning of December or maybe in November. I'll have to look. Days off and being sick.
I climbed 11 flights of stairs today.
On packing ... if I am going somewhere like Canada for a month, I'll start packing a few days in advance.
If we're going away for a long weekend like we did a couple weeks ago, I will start packing the night before we leave and finish in the morning. Or sometimes I will pack the morning we leave.
I also tend not to plan trips very far in advance. I can't pack a week or two out if I don't know I am going somewhere.
On closing my eyes at work ... gone are the days of cubicles and offices. It's all open plan and I sit near the entrance.
But I actually took the last hour today to think about what I want to do next week. On a Friday afternoon, especially a Friday before a long weekend like today, 90% of the people go by about 3 pm.

I can't imagine sitting around waiting for the clock to move! It happens occasionally when I'm in a long lecture or a seminar session that doesn't have much to do with my work or interest. But most of the time I look at the clock ... get involved in whatever I'm doing ... and discover that several hours have passed and I'm running out of time!!

Well, I finally hit all goals yesterday for the first time this week. It has been a difficult one.
Tracey I try to let my DH do what he can, but he is legally blind, so a lot depends on me. He is doing better at choosing snacks and his drinking. He had a hot toddy on Tuesday night, but that is it so far this week. I will say his mood is better most of the time. I love the snowman.
Lanette Such smart girls! Those with chickens here also have covered runs with supervised run times.
Machka Maybe I need to schedule that time to think. Trying to do it before bed, but some nights it just doesn't work. Yes, there are times I need quiet to work through things. Complex things are difficult when I have people interrupting. This is the reason my SIL gives for going into work early. I understand but still have issues if not staying whole workday in a retail environment.
Pick up work truck from dealer today. Not sure what else but work. Oldest daughter and YGD are in CA for the Musical Theater competition. I am excited for them.
Rebecca I understand your frustration with middle son. Enjoy the time with your boys!

Packing Usually I start the night before except for trip to Tennessee which i start a couple days ahead as there is a lot that goes . I have a list for things other than clothes to make that easier.
I know I have to pay bills and get tax info together this weekend for accountant. Then friends are coming Sunday for snacks, desserts, and super bowl. Only three of the eight are actually interested in the game. I watch for commercials and halftime show. Neither of those have been worth watching the past few years. We will see.
No news on brother's FIL yesterday. Prayers continuing.
Need to get off here.

Good morning ladies!
Machka I have plenty of chores to do, like cleaning my Mom's closets and my Dad's finances, and then groceries and cooking. And now that there's no "supervision" I might do some work in the flower garden when it warms up.
But my hobbies have gone by the wayside. I used to knit and sew and write, but I quit. I still read a fair amount, and I go out to lunch occasionally. And I ride horseback on Thursdays. And trimming Teddy is like a hobby. I feel like I've already tried the hobbies that interest me.
I used to love weaving. The color blending is magical. I have two looms in storage. But there's no room to do it here. And no need for cloth either.
I wonder if I would write more if my antidepressant were changed. Fair question. I often have that flat dull feeling. But there's a lot of risk of making things worse.
So that's a long answer but no there's nothing I really want to start right now. Maybe after Dad passes, things will change. But that could be several years.

When I was studying for my Masters in Healthcare IT, I did research on how Insurance, costs, and pharmaceuticals influence the cost of healthcare AND the way medical personal are allowed to do things. Doesn’t matter where you are, these 3 things influence the cost to the ones who run the medical facilities (private, non-private, government run, non-profit, for profit, etc.) It is a shame how money runs the world, not intelligence.
I didn't realise you had a Masters in Healthcare IT ... kind of my area too.

Good morning from the Arkansas River Valley, where the grass is beginning to green up already,
I don't mean to sound cynical about the eclipse, I really don't. But then, there are a lot of things that crowds of people attend that I find baffling, such as fashion shows, sporting events, and New Year's Eve ball drops. I do understand why sudden darkness at midday without a cloud in the sky could be terrifying to someone in the earlier centuries of human existence. What I don't understand is why anyone now would travel ten miles to see it happen, much less 1200 miles, as my best friend is going to do. SMH.
Tracey, the snowman is just spiffy, and love the cubing T-shirt, too... Didn't look closely enough at Lauryn's card to see that it was Little Women, but I think that's wonderful. I loved that book, as well as the sequels, Little Men and Jo's Boys. Just a wonderful, idyllic look at life at that time. I imagined myself as Jo, as well as feeling much like Lucy in the Charlie Brown comics.
Thanks for the comments on the mural - I'm taking progress pictures, which should be interesting later.
Allie - Love the cut and color! I've got to make an appointment to get mine cut. To chime in to an earlier discussion, I color my own, somewhere between blonde and medium blonde, and have since I was 19 years old. I started out dying it solid black, and have had it as everything from that to vivid red to blonde over the years. It was once a very dark brown. I've tried to let it go fully gray more than once over the last five years, but the gray always comes in to a sort of leprous or fungus-like look, so I always go back to blonde.
Hopefully, the wind will stay down today and I can get outside - need to get a huge amount of cardboard burnt, it's been weeks of rain or wind or both. Would also like to get the carport cleaned out - several pieces of wood that need to be moved to the woodshed and just overall schmutz from the winter so far. Corey won't be here tomorrow, he's going over the line to Oklahoma to re-wire a trailer for one of the guys from work, so that will be most of the day. What I don't get done today, I can do tomorrow. Sunday will be raining all day.

Eclipse ... Buffalo is right on the centerline in the afternoon this year. I'm with you Lisa, wouldn't travel to it or anything else where large crowds are gathered.
Kay ... I understand wanting to see an aging relative ... time is not a given. It probably would have been best though to just "show up" and not give a "heads up." Good luck with the family drama.
Rebecca ... so glad you are finally with your boys. The reluctance of the middle son to travel to your home would bother me too although I wouldn't stay at my parents home in later years with my sons either. My dad once questioned me on it and I confess I lied as to the reason. Didn't want to hurt his feelings. Now I'm sorry we didn't try harder, but my husband reminds me that the situation was difficult. Hard to say what is going on in your son and DIL's heads.

Today I have a consultation with an otolaryngologist regarding a cochlear implant. Traveling out of Buffalo for this appointment. This surgeon works with my audiologist, so I've done all kinds of prerequisite testing. Meeting with the surgeon to have questions answered, understand expectations and see if this is the route I want to go. My husband is hopeful. My son is worried. We'll see.

I am huffing and puffing after working out with a video on TV for a grand total of eight minutes. My husband walked the dog around the block earlier this morning, and our step count is equivalent.
I have been logging every bite for the last week, and although I have felt deprived every single day, the scale hasn’t changed an ounce. I have so far to go, and it feels like I’m not making progress.
