Good afternoon all:
Beautiful day here. Close to 80 right now. Went for 2 mile walk and was happy I did not get overheated like before they changed meds last summer. I was sweating some by the end-but not drenched.
Annie-I'm sure if you let a couple of your dad's friends at church know that you will be dropping him off they will keep an eye out for him and see he gets home. How far is the church from your house? Would it be possible for you to drop him off and then walk there and walk back home with him?
Margaret-I hope your friend has a peaceful passing. You gave her daughter good advice-they do say hearing is last to go.
Allie-good luck with Trulicity.
Lisa-so happy to see you discovered your real BIL.
Debbie-you seem to know all things cats-one of mine (maybe both) has taken to wetting on the floor in the room the litter boxes are in. I will admit-I had left some papers on the floors and that is where they peed. It doesn't seem to be every day. I have two boxes for them. I ordered new ones today and they will have a third. They will sometimes meow when going to bathroom. They are both close to 15. Any ideas?
Kim-excellent research. I know my SIL housemate got placed in a facility with a good reputation and it didn't live up to it.
Tracey-you are correct about fly by visits and complaints from relatives. Once dementia sets in it is taught to tell what is right and not-you have to be there to observe.
Brother Update:Brother slept last night. He is having a quiet day today (which means he is not having phone conversations with no phone and no one on the other end. Biggest episode is they had to go outside to wait for a ride related to my SIL cancer (which she does not have-one of his discussions with God revolved around that). I called to see how things were going. He talked with me briefly. A rather halting conversation on his end. Could not understand some of it. Wanted to know how I was doing (like we haven't seen each other for some time). Wanted to know if I needed him and SIL to help with anything. Don't know if this episode is running down or not. I hope MRI sheds light on sudden change and perhaps there is something that can help some of his symptoms.
Off to work on ironing and a couple of things for work. Have gotten some random cleaning done today (and some unexpected because of kitties).
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio6 -
Hi! This is my first-time using myfitnesspal, but I have tried other apparently and programs before. I am 53 and a mon of 3. My boys are all grown and on their own, but I have a 12 year old daughter still at home. I really want to set a positive example for her of being healthy and confident.
I also have diabetes and have struggled the last few tears with controlling my glucose levels. I recently started having problems with the vision in my left eye, that has left me wearing an eye patch. My doctor says it will heal as my sugar levels drop so I am really focused on getting that back under control. This has been a scary experience. I started using this app because it shows me how many carbs I am eating and I need that visual and accountability.
Best of luck to all in achieving their goals and feeling happy and healthy!

Anna, I am happy to meet you. This thread is a good place to come for encouragement as you make changes in your life. We are a busy bunch and range in age from early 50's to early 80's so we have lots of experiences and varied life histories. I came here at age 62 and have made huge changes in my life and habits. I wish the same for you. I live with my husband and two dogs and stay close to home so I have lots of time for walking, knitting, riding my exercise bike, reading, and spending time with my dogs and husband.

Annie, my mom, would drive and get lost, and I would search for her. When I hired a caregiver for when I was sleeping or needed to run errands, the girl left my mom alone to get her lunch. The agency promised they would not leave her alone. Then, when I got home, the girl left early from her shift. When I called the agency, they denied that it was true. When my mom took off in the middle of the night, I knew it was time for her to be home. My mom loves the place she is at, and she is safe. I had to get rid of my mom's car cause she almost ran over the caregiver during her angry phase. First, I parked it at my mom's house. Then we got rid of it. She was mad, but it was safer. If I hadn't set the alarms, I would not have known that my mom had taken off. My grandma was a runner who took the bus to Venice Beach when we lived in California. The police had to look for my grandma several times. Your dad does not need to drive; it isn't safe. I know this isn't easy at all, and I tried to keep my mom at home with me for as long as possible. Before I brought my mom to my house, these young people had her paying her bills, taking her to the bank, withdrawing her money, and stealing it. They had my mom write a check for $589.00 for an electric bill for their family home. In the south, the banks know you and will tell you everything. Write now. You can hire a reliable sitter to watch your dad, to give you the freedom to get things done.6

Regarding driving with dementia and other medical conditions, it's probably not safe for the driver and also not safe for other road users. It just takes a couple seconds of inattention for bad things to happen.

Cut the grass. Didn’t do a fantastic job, but at least we won’t come home to a jungle. Called the gal who used to do the bacon at BK. I’m toying with the idea of asking if I could do it only so that I would get extra hours. That is, as long as it doesn’t take hours and hours. Somehow, I don’t think it does but I wanted to talk to the gal who used to do it before I said anything to anyone. She needs to think on it since it’s been some years since she’s worked at BK (which means it’s been a couple of years that I’ve been working on Sat.)
Anna – welcome. Keep coming back, you’ll get great advice

Winter!!
I wouldn't have minded long leggings under my skirt today, instead of knee-length leggings.
And maybe slightly thicker sockettes ... shoe liners.

Today’s gratitude: that I don’t have to work outside in that eyeball-freezing, tree toppling wind!
Michele have all the cats that Shadow hasn’t gotten along with been adults? Hoping kittens will be different . . .
Debbie, wow, that is a deal. Wanted to order some of those galvanized raised beds, but then realized we just do not have enough sun to make it worthwhile.
Kim wow. What an investigation. Inspiring and impressive. Well done!
Ginny so sorry to hear of your brother’s sudden and startling change. ((hugs))

All went fine. My blood pressure was high at the beginning, but was OK on the second try. Had an ECG. Blood group etc. MRSA swabs. I was given my antiseptic wash and nose gel. I've got to go back for another blood group test next week for double checking.
Went both ways by Uber and enjoyed the trip home, talking about France. He got a tip.
Edie is in Bath with DDIL, because DDIL is giving a talk today at a conference. She thought Edie would enjoy going with her and seeing the sights. She sent this pic of their breakfast this morning. Edie looks happy! Her absolutely favourite thing is avocado on toast.

Good morning ladies!
Lanette his church is maybe a mile and a half away. I dropped him off thinking he would catch a ride home, which he did, after spending half an hour looking for his car. He has trouble remembering where the car is, and whether he drove or not.
We are seeing his doctor today, so I am going to ask if they do any senior driver evaluation. Then I need to get started on a dementia diagnosis, which means scheduling some tests. Then we have to talk on a practical level about his wandering and whether he is ready for adult day care. And his thyroid. So lots to discuss today.
He went for a walk alone yesterday evening. It makes me nervous but he seems to manage. Today's goal is about him quitting driving. I need to focus on that first.
When I say his driving days are coming to an end, he laughs and replies all his days are coming to an end. He will be 90 soon, but his health is generally excellent except for hearing and dementia. He could live several more years.
So now I'm wondering if we overreacted about putting him in a home. I think the adult day care would be better for us, and cheaper. But it never hurts to be prepared.
Thanks for listening to me ramble.
Heather getting closer!
Ginny thinking about your brother.
Lisa thanks for the picture of Patrick. He may be a little young for me, but that's okay. In my fantasy, I am much younger!
Welcome Anna in California!
Have a great day, and may you be happy, healthy, safe and free!

There was a truck stop in the small town I lived in for many years in northern Alberta and I used to go there for these excellent open-faced Denver sandwiches and hot roast beef sandwiches (both of which I probably wouldn't/couldn't eat now) and fabulous orange-chocolate floats. Sadly it doesn't exist anymore. And thinking back, I'm amazed I liked roast beef then!!
Also there was another truck stop we used to visit for brunch when we travelled down to Edmonton. I think it might have been in Valleyview (although part of me wonders if it might have been in Fox Creek). We'd have these huge breakfasts - mine was eggs over hard, crispy bacon, immense fluffy pancakes, hash browns and toast. It wasn't remotely fancy but those breakfasts just hit the spot.
But that was about 35 years ago, and I'm not sure I could ever recapture those experiences.
Regarding burgers ... we don't go to McDonalds or Hungry Jacks (Burger King) etc. anymore but we do go to Boss Burger or Burgers Got Soul now and then. They're good.
https://www.bossburgerco.com.au/
https://www.burgergotsoul.com/
But I tried a burger from one of the truck stops in Tassie a few years ago, and never again. It was so bad, and half raw. I felt horrible all night.

Burgers aren't what they used to be. In the US something changed about the regulations for cooking them, and now all the burgers are too well done for my taste. Oh well, at least I never got salmonella!

Annie - Don't forget that Corey's nine years younger than me... age is but a number, my chicken. 🐔 Of course, on occasion, he gooses me about the age difference. Back when I was very ill, I told Corey that as soon as I got better again, I would jump on him like a duck on a June bug. He raised an eyebrow and said, "Well... try not to break a hip doing it." And then he left the room at speed. Coward.
Heather - Holy guacamole that's a lot of food for a little girl! 👀😄😁 I'd be ill for hours if I ate that much at a sitting. The resiliency of the young never ceases to amaze. The prep work is truly beginning now, so pleased your pain will soon be lessened.
Ginny - I hope your brother's steep drop into dementia is caused or at least eased by something that can be resolved. So hard on all of you.
Machka - As you're moving into the cold months, we're moving into the hot ones... today is "basting and roasting," just a few sprinkles this morning, enough to get the humidity up, and then sunny. But... it's supposed to rain all day Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll get out after the rain cloud has either sprinkled on us or passed by and get the rest of the mowing done. I love being outside in the mornings, but the afternoons are already inching into the uncomfortably hot.
Allie - So pleased the Trulicity is really helping with your appetite and helping you make good food choices. It helps a lot when something helps us break the cycle of thinking about our next meal or snack all the time, and helps us stop eating when we're satisfied instead of just continuing to eat. Glad it's working for you.
Kind of waiting out the weather, so will be inside, working on the quilt for the early hours here. It is incredibly nice to be just us again after three weeks with people here at the house off and on. We love our private lives, and I love my quiet days where I'm not trying to talk to or interact with other people. Well, unless it's on the phone, which I am perfectly capable of ignoring.
Pleased because the scale showed 155.4 this morning, a pound and a half lighter than I started the month. Trying to get down in the 150-155 range. I did put back on the two pounds lost to sweating while I was working outside, bringing me back to the same weight I was yesterday morning, so I know it's legit. I drank almost a gallon of fluids yesterday throughout the day, and obviously needed them!
My only commitment this week is to be at the clinic in town at 8 a.m. on Wednesday to finally have the last exam done for the VA disability rating. Fingers crossed.
Have a good day my chickens...
Love y'all,

Anna - welcome! Good news that your eye will heal, and great timing joining us right now. A few of us are working on getting our A1C down and the MFP logging is great for tracking sugars and carbs. I've just started attending weekly classes (Zoom) for folks with pre-diabetes to prevent T2 diabetes through lifestyle changes including activity & diet/nutrition. It's a year long class developed by the CDC and given by a regional hospital in my area. I share what I can here in this forum, though most of it is probably old news for you.
Michele - is there any other place you could work if the BK job keeps dwindling? Have a safe trip.
Annie - glad you'll be with your dad at the doc's today. Hopefully the doc can help you make headway dealing with your dad's cognitive decline.
Heather - glad the pre-op appointment went fine. So surgery is scheduled the end of this week? That's a LOT of food in front of Edie. Did she and DIL split it? It looks delicious - I put ham on my grocery list. Your Uber driver sounded like a lot of fun. I have a huge crush on French actor Samuel Le Bihan, lol. I have one more episode left to watch in The Mountain Detective series. I might have to watch the whole 2 seasons over again!
Sunny afternoon yesterday after morning showers and it was dry enough to get most of the mowing done. Still part of the back yard to finish up and never ending weed eating. The Diabetes Prevention class is at 3 this afternoon, my normal mowing time, so glad I finished what I did. Looks like rain the rest of the week.
Back later.

It's been a weird start to the week.
We camped overnight in our new house last night so that we were there when the flooring guys arrived early this morning.
We've agreed that we're getting a bit old for sleeping on cycletouring mattresses on the ground. When we did it a couple weeks ago, it wasn't too bad, but for some reason neither of us could get comfortable this time. I did not sleep well and woke up all stiff and sore. However, we may do it again a time or two before the beds go over ... we'll just have to bring over more bedding or something.
I had my first shower in the new house ... that was nice! Great water pressure!
The flooring guys arrived, we had a chat with them, and then drove to our current house, through the city. I dropped my husband off and got some work shoes (which I had forgotten to bring with me), then caught the bus into the city.
By noon, I was really hungry, and it was still 2 hours till lunch. I hadn't eaten much at our new house the night before because we didn't have much there, and of course, nothing for breakfast. So I bought a bag of walnuts and ate about half of it.
I love nuts, but as with most other forms of protein (dairy, eggs, meat, peanuts, etc.), my body isn't so keen and it wasn't long before I was sprinting to the toilet ... again and again.
I made a mad dash to the toilet again just before I left work, knocked back some Loperamide (Imodium), and caught the bus. Thankfully, I made all the way home, although the last bit of the trip was another sprint.
Then I slept on the sofa for 2 hours.
Note to self: do not eat half a bag of walnuts!
I think tomorrow will be a bit more normal.

My husband is feeling 100% better this morning. It makes me so happy! Guess the iron is working and hope whatever has been causing the anemia will be diagnosed soon.
I tried using puff pastry for the first time yesterday. I should have watched a couple of Youtube videos first as it never occurred to me to dust it with flour before trying to shape. Also, since I was adding pie filling to it, I should have sprinkled with sugar/cinnamon first. It puffed but was fairly bland to taste.
Heather ~ That did look like an enormous amount of food on Edie's plate. I hope she and mom enjoyed every bite.
Michele ~ I too was wondering why you don't look for part time work at a different establishment. If you cook bacon, won't you smell like grease all day?
Annie ~ Good luck at the dr's today and hope he can give your and your dad some good advice.
Lisa ~ So glad Patrick is working out and that he and Cory can be close.
Welcome to all and hope you have a blessed day!

Carol - SO pleased that your husband's feeling better. Anemia is just a long slow slide into every-waking-moment fatigue that you never shake. Your brain even gets tired. It isn't until you start feeling good that you realize how truly bad you felt at worst. Glad it's being treated, and hope they find the cause soon. I'm pleased too for Corey--I miss having family near sometimes, and he hasn't lived near any of his birth family since he left Alaska in 2006.
Later, headed outside to get some things cleaned up and get the rest of the lawn mowed...

I have seen some videos where you take slices of fruit, peaches, strawberries or whatever and lay on parchment paper. Then drizzle with honey and cinnamon. Next you lay the layer of pastry dough on it and crimp down the sides with a fork. Brush top with egg wash and course sugar. In oven and when the top is brown its done. When you turn it over the fruit is nice looking!

My DH was a chef in another life. He knows what I can and can’t eat, adjusts what he is making to match, and makes sure it tastes good too. He makes up all his own recipes. He might look at a recipe online, but then make it ‘his’ way which ends up very flavorful. There is no sugar in the house, only Stevia, REAL grass fed beef butter that tastes like butter, not the generic kind with no flavor, no eggs just powdered egg substitute. He makes AWESOME meatballs without eggs! Yesterday, he made sloppy joe his way with diced tomatoes, and no sugar.
Yesterday was a sick/lazy day for me. I got up at 7:30, ate breakfast, did a couple things then went back to bed at 10:00 am. Stayed in bed watching movies all day and still slept all night. Feel much bette today.
Foods yesterday:
Kellogg’ s Corn Flakes (1 cup) with 1/2 cup almond milk and 1/2 an organic banana and MCT in my Green Tea (no more coffee, can’t drink black tea. Colitis better with this change!)
Dinner was 2 slices Sarah Lee white bread with Sloppy Kevins
Snack/supper was a Peanut Butter/oatmeal/honey ball
Came up to 1282 calories, 8 calories lower than my goal. No exercise at all. Only 1,933 steps yesterday. 62.7 OZ of water (not enough water. needs to be over 72 oz.)
Logging this here is helping be to ‘be good!’ LOL

Morning ya'll
I didn't sleep well..and that darn pizza with all that salt, really messed up my weight loss, but im.sure it will catch up again.
Tomorrow Alfie going to the groomers and im going to do bloodwork.2 -
Lanette, There's probably not much in the diabetes prevention class that you don't know already and there was probably little in Jake's cardiac rehab program that he didn't already know, but repetition and reminder are important. Just like people who regularly attend church, synagogue, etc. and recovering people who attend recovery meetings regularly, it's important to hear what you need to hear over and over and have support from others.
I found out through experience that pizza is not my friend. Not only because of the sodium but because the ratio of calories to nutrition is very low. I'd do just as well eating cardboard with a few high sodium toppings. It's for the same reason that I avoid sauces, gravies, and salad dressings.
We woke up early this morning so I was able to get a long walk and over 9,000 steps.

Barbie--Great news from Jake's appointment.
Annie--Sending hugs!
Beth--Hugs for you also.
Lisa--Glad things are working out well for DBIL.
Well I got a call last Wednesday that my friend I was POA for had a stroke or something during the night and was unresponsive. So DH and I went to Lincoln. After we got there I knew it was bad so called her daughters and explained what was going on and that they could come if they could be civil. She did pass on Thursday evening. I am so glad we had hospice as they made sure she was comfortable. I know I prepared for this, but it has really hit me. We have been best friends for 51 years and I realized we never had a fight. So now waiting for the funeral home to call and I can go pickup her ashes. The oldest daughter is moving back to Nebraska next week. So once that is done we will sit down and plan a celebration of life. The daughter that lives here went to put an notice in the newspaper and they wanted $406 just a couple paragraphs. Anyway I am hanging in here and trying to figure out what I do next.
