How About We Don't Delete Newsfeeds

This.
Why do you think almost every new or returning intro member post begs for friends? People know the value of (hopefully) finding a supportive tribe.
MFP has been wonderful to me. I’ve been one of your biggest cheerleaders and have tried to pay forward all the wonderful help and advice I’ve been given. I’ve tried to greet and support new users for years. I feel like 90% of the value of the app just trickled through my fingers like sand. Not going to waste the effort going forward. Very sad.
Where else on the internet am I going to talk about stuff like extra skin and, instead of being ridiculed for not looking like the next social media person, get appreciation and shared stories about the floppy ring. My friends know what it takes to get one and respect me for it, and vice versa.21 -
Well congratulations on giving mfp that final death stroke for many of us.
Nearly 10 years of logging on everyday to support and cheer on mfp family. Many will be leaving in droves as will I. Mfp will offer nothing better than any one of a number of fitness sites. What made mfp stand out and better was the social aspect.. my friends being able to interact and cheer me on.
I just can't believe some bozo behind a desk who likely doesn't even use mfp has decided its a way to save money.. ahhh no.. when people leave, you lose money.
As for it being a little used feature that's just rubbish and only being said as a way to justify gutting it from mfp.
Im so disappointed, it will hurt greatly to lose mfp family 🥺
I give it a couple years at best and what is left of mfp will be extinguished.
I hope staff are looking for new jobs.. you're gunna need it when mfp breathes its last dying breath.27 -
So I have like a 10 year streak i guess it will only be for me since no else will be able to see it and even harder will be the lost of great friends.1

To top it off, when I and others submitted trouble ticket for issues with newsfeed, the tech acted like it just happened and first they heard of it. They sent me a litany of questions, then the next day, they labeled the issue "resolved". Thanks11

Hi y’all, Wanted to first acknowledge that saying good bye to any feature is hard, and I too am sad to see the Newsfeed ride off into the sunset. I do feel strongly that social interaction is important for a lot of folks on what can often be a lonely and difficult journey and having friends cheering you on can make a difference.
I’ll be transparent that the Newsfeed was one of our oldest features that had many flaws and was no longer sustainable to support. While it was not used by many we understand that it’s a real loss for those who used it.
While it is not perfect, due to some limitations like no friend or follow features in the Community, our team enabled the Community Activity Feed on profiles within the community as it was an existing feature available from our forum providers. Some of you may even remember seeing it briefly back in 2021 when we updated the Community.
The community profiles only have two options Public or Private, and the Private option makes the Activity Feed unviewable by others. The next best alternative to utilizing the Activity Feed would be to create a Private Group to invite your to and interact with them there.
I know these options don’t “replace” the Newsfeed by any means, but we hope they help give some members some options to interact with others outside of topic driven discussions.
Bad justification for a bad idea. Leave the newsfeed alone. It is where I get my support.17 -
I’ve been here 13 years. I’ve lost 120-ish lbs. I’ve been through divorce, births, deaths (family, friends and people on my friends list), and entire life of a treasured pet, countless life events, and the one thing that has gotten me through all of that was the support of the people on my newsfeed. I’ve met some of the most important people in my life on my newsfeed (or via connections with others who are on my newsfeed). I’ve been on multiple journeys (international included) to meet and vacation with the people on my friends list.
Was there actual data collected for determining how many people use the newsfeed? Or was it a poll of the 50 or so very vocal, very frequent forum contributors who, generally speaking, don’t use the newsfeed (as they interact publicly via forums).
It’s tragic that the few pieces of mfp that make it worth signing on every day have now been chipped away to nothing. There are plenty of social media sites that do social so much better, plenty of other calorie counting options. There’s really no reason to be here at all anymore.
Thankfully, the “very few” of us who have made deep connections here have plenty of other options. Hopefully those other options won’t also remove the primary feature that makes their site a better option than the bazillion or other alternatives. A feature that is primary in the advertising for why mfp is different and better.
What an absolutely absurd decision.

Allow me to offer a translation of Betty's post..
We are tired of breaking the news feed every time we upgrade our ad serving applications. The feed is too old and does not support current ad serving standards. Yeah we know you love it but if we cannot show you more ads then you might as well not be here. Come see your new activity feed with state of the art ads!
Anyone remember when users had blogs? They were insanely popular. So popular that MFP tried mixing their paid ad blogs in with them to get some accidental clicks. Did it work? Nope. So they took away the user blogs in the belief that users would start clicking on them if there was no competition from user blogs. Now all we have is ad blogs that absolutely no one wants to see.34 -
The newsfeed is one of the only reasons I have stuck around here for so long, with the constant issues. I’ve had to create new profiles and add friends again when tech support couldn’t figure out why my app kept crashing, but I did it (twice) because of the friendships, and the newsfeed is a pivotal part of that. Some of these people have been friends of mine here since 2013. This is starting to feel like a social experiment where you see how far you can push people until you drive them all away. Without the newsfeed I might as well go to a logging app that’s functional.20
-
So then what is the point of mfp without the newsfeed? Other apps count calories better, let us scan barcodes for free. Have been here 12+ years and I am here for my friends list and news feed not for anything you can provide me nutritionally or diet wise. This is a poor choice.17
-
Im surprised MFP didn't try to make this a premium feature lol.
Can't add anything that all the reasonable people have already mentioned.
So RIP MFP. You won't recover from this poor, lazy, decision.23 -
I have canceled my premium subscription and am switching apps since this one is not worth the trouble anymore. People need social interaction to stay on track with healthy habits. Community is so incredibly important when it comes to healthy behaviors, and that was what made MFP special.
For whatever reason, the MFP team can’t keep the app working correctly. Maybe it’s outdated code, maybe it’s ads, or maybe the team doesn’t have the right people. It is going to take some very talented and hard working folks to create a calorie counting app that doubles as a proper, non-glitchy social media app, but I am hopeful that someone else will pick up the torch and run with it.15 -
Ooooh, this is a mistake. Y’all are running this app into the ground - what a shame!13

Why don't you just change the name of the site to NoFitnessPals while you're at it?41
-
The newsfeed has been a lifeline for me from the very start of my journey. I tried posting in the community on my very first day of joining MFP with no luck in making any friends. EVERY friend I've made has been thru the newsfeeds. As far as the "upkeep" that @betty referred to as the reason for its discontinuation, I disagree and further deduce that it's more of the fact that the advertising shown on the newsfeeds wasn't producing enough results to warrant any further life of the newsfeeds. These things ALWAYS boil down to money, which is inherently born from greed. It wasn't MFP who supported me when I needed, cheered me on when I did well, or encouraged me when I didn't. It was the "fitfam" created inside those newsfeeds. That is where the REAL value is. When corporate mongers can't see that kind of value at the fundamental level, how can anyone else believe there is any worth left in the stripped down product that remains?

At least tell me how to share recipes with friends0

You have a 10 year streak of having MFP open. Well done.
That's all your streak means. It doesn't mean you've logged food or exercise or anything. It just means you've opened MFP and left it open for 10 years. Is that fact really so important to you?0 -

That's cool. And I get it.
The Newsfeed was clunky and disconnected to the Community. It was just an extra thing to open, and only to see that this person logged their meal and that person did some exercise.
I stopped using it a long time ago.
A question - will the food diary and, more importantly, the exercise diary still be available? And reports?

SAVE our NEWSFEED!!
Imagine my shock reading that MFP will be taking away the newsfeed.
WHY?? It doesn't make sense. The newsfeed is the easiest way to keep up with all our PALS!! Going to community and trying to catch up with friends there takes alot of time...time that alot of us don't have. Some of us have only a few minutes each day...with the newsfeed we use that precious time to catch up with our "PALS" you can't do that at the community.
Having the newsfeed is what makes MFP uniquely different than all the other fitness apps we could use and what keeps most of us here.
I can't speak for everyone here but my MFP friends have helped me through some of the toughest, happiest, greatest, times of my life. They have picked me up from the lowest of lows, held my hand through stressful periods of life and shouted from the rooftops celebrating my victories!!
The fitness journey is much more than just workout and diaries. It's living life to the fullest and my friends here have supported me every step of the way!! Taking away the newsfeed would take this relationship away from all of us. These people were connections I met here years ago that I now call family!! We have created friendships that run deeper than just support for our health journey. Don't take this connection away from us!!
I appreciate that you are looking for ways to improve MFP but taking the newsfeed away does not achieve this!!
I hope you listen to all the members that don't want to lose the newsfeed...I know if it's gone I'll be taking my premium membership elsewhere

Save our newsfeed!!37

QUESTION: A person I know on the community (not one of my official friends here) said she added something to her activity feed. I click on her profile and did not see it. What I did see was that I could add a photo and post to her feed even tho we are not friends. So either public or private. Seems like a super place for spam to get loaded onto if you are public? How are we going to monitor these things? At least with the newsfeed only your friends could post to your profile if you set it that way. I know we have a lot of trolls visiting the site. I am NOT looking forward to when they figure out they can send trash to anyone who is public. 😳😳😕12
-
After almost 15 years I am logging out. I used this community to meet like minded people and boy did I ever. Some of the best people in my life have come from here. The newsfeed was my place to vent an talk to my friends, you know the people that I CHOSE to have a connection with.
I loved the fact that the newsfeed allowed me to keep up with the people I have for so long without having to scroll other social media or go to each individual profile.
Groups? Great solution except I am not friends with all my friends friends, so that is not a viable option for me.
It's just the end of another era I guess. So long and thanks for all the fish?28 -
Has there been an official announcement regarding the newsfeeds?2

It's still there.
Who said it was going away? Is there an official announcement somewhere?2 -
Is this some kind of ploy? For what it's worth, the news feed is the only reason I log in and see the advertisements. Without the feed to get my eyes on the ads that revenue is going to be lost.42
-
The news feed is the reason I have succeeded on this program. I CAN LOG FOOD AND EXERCISE IN AN EXCEL FILE.
Meeting people who are or have been through what you are going through is the reason this website is valuable.
