Finally on the board for 5.27 miles this morning. I'm going to set my goal at 60 miles for the month since I'm getting a late start and there are only 30 days in the month, plus I'm going on a cruise in a couple of weeks.I had a great time hiking this weekend. Saturday was 19.45 miles with 4,157 feet of climbing. The steepest climb was to Albert Mountain Fire Tower. A portion of the trail:
The fire tower constructed in 1951.
The views from the top were amazing. Mountain after mountain.
It was a beautiful day. The rhododendron and mountain laurel were in bloom.
Got a little cloudy and rain threatened around 4:00 pm but it held off. We got to camp around 6:30 so there was still plenty of time to set up camp and cook dinner. I was in my sleeping bag by 7:45 pm!
The next morning we packed up early and were on the trail for about 10 minutes before the rain began. The temp was in the mid-50s and we only had 5.4 miles back to the car. Climbing those hills will keep you warm!7 -
SummerSkier wrote: »What kind of fueling does everyone do?
I use gu primarily during training on any run 8 miles or more. I fuel about every 45 minutes. I use maurten on race days because I don't need water with it and they are very neutral tasting.
I drink plain water but in the summer I also take salt tabs on anything more than 3 miles. They have made a huge difference in my summer recovery. I take the first one at mile 1.5 then every mile after that.
I also make sure to eat something before any run over 3 miles. The amount kind of depends on the distance.3 -
Beautiful @Teresa502! Where is your cruise visiting?1

This is a girls trip to the Bahamas. There are six of us going and we will be celebrating 2 of the ladies who are turning 50 this year. We're spending a couple of days in Orlando pre-cruise.5 -

I usually don't fuel unless I'm doing over 8-10 miles. GU is my go-to choice also. I think the chocolate one tastes like the cake icing that you buy in the little round tubs! When I'm out hiking for hours and miles, I add LMNT to my water for electrolytes.6 -

RIP old pair: 6/3/23 to 6/3/2024 (really)
Cute coincidence aside ... Garmin says I ran about 390 miles in my old pair. Seems low for a year, I want to put in double that this year.
These are ASICS Gel-Cumulus 25, in snazzy grey and black. Extra-wide.

@Teresa502 . Great run and thanks for the hiking report. Those pictures are beautiful! Enjoy your cruise! Sounds like a fun trip.
Thanks for the shoe porn @chris_in_cal . If I missed it, Happy Birthday!
June 1 - Walk 0.70 miles - Ran 1.40 miles - driveway laps - trimmed trees
June 2 - Walk 2.00 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - treadmill
June 3 - Walk 1.00 miles - Ran 1.15 miles - driveway laps - Gym 21:03 - trimmed trees
June 4 - Walk 1.09 miles - Ran 1.66 miles - driveway laps
9.00/80.0 mile goal
My fingers didn't do what I told them to this morning, and hit the wrong buttons on my Garmin. Once I thought I hit the segment button, but had hit stop. Then, I thought I hit stop and hit segment instead. Once I got it all straightened out, I did the planned 10 x 1/1 run/walk. That was 19:01 min and 1.44 miles for a 13:12 min/mile avg pace. Counting the 3 min of messed up Garmin, "running" was 22:10 min and 1.66 miles. I walked 0.5 miles for warm up and then 0.59 miles for cool down to get to a good total (2.75 miles).

June Goal: 215 Miles
6/2: 11.02 miles
6/3: 3.15 miles
6/4: 6.26 miles
20.43/125 miles completed for June
It was another hot morning. 80°F and dew point 77°. Winds were 20 mph. It wasn't very pleasant weather, but I still got a good 6.25 miles in. We got up to 101° today, so I guess I ran when it was cool.
@summerskier I miss the Gatorade gummies too. I have tried some Clif blocks and they taste ok, but they are so thick. I've also tried some honey stinger mini waffles. I like how they taste, but I really liked to let the gummies dissolve, so the jury is still out on the mini waffles. I don't usually like gels because they are messy. I need to try the salt tabs, but I guess I will have to order them online.
@Teresa502 That hike looks awesome! I hope you have a great cruise!
Nice shoes @chris_in_cal! And Happy Belated Birthday!

Neighborhood 1Mile (at 12"54 pace). Day 35
The new shoes are going to work. No hot spots or issues. My old pair was a "stability" shoe and I never liked the hard channel it had my foot fall into. This new one is a neutral shoe, and that's my jam.8 -
@SummerSkier and @kgirlhart - I really like Skratch Labs energy chews. They are similar to the Gatorade ones so you might check them out. I think you can get individual packets at REI so you don't have to buy a box just to try them.
I got out for another walk this evening with Hobbes the Vizsla since I have treatment tomorrow and won't be able too get out for a couple of days. I also started a 6 week Peloton strength program. @kgirlhart - we saw 3 skunks at different houses in our neighborhood. They freaked Hobbes out and he tried to hide behind me and between my legs.
06/01 - 4.37mi 12797steps
06/02 - 3.72mi 11339steps
06/03 - 4719steps

@Teresa502 love the outdoorsy photos!
Enjoy your Florida trip and Bahamas cruise!
I expect you to go get good value for money on that drinks package! Haha!

I run fasted for my runs.
I chew gum Orbit bubble mint, 2 pieces every 8ish miles
> 18 miles - wear my hydration belt, 4 - 8oz bottles of water
> 18 miles - GU Chocolate
I carry Black Forest gummies, or Haribo gummies, if I need something else. GU used to make a gummy that was compact as well as Gatorade chews. Both stopped making them, so any gummy will do for me.
Because my nutrition stays 'spot on', I really don't need much. I make sure I fuel appropriately each day. Not to say I do not go off rails every so often.

Nice running @kgirlhart . I saw on the news this morning how it is going to be unbearably hot in TX today and, I think, the next few days. It's a bit early for those temps, isn't it?
@chris_in_cal I'm glad you like your new shoes. Great job on the streak.
Nice walking @shanaber . I hope the treatment isn't too hard on you.

June total: 16/100 miles
YTD: 403.9/1200 miles
6/2: 4.9 miles
6/3: 3.1 miles
6/5: 8 miles
I moved my long run to today because I’m working on Saturday. I considered the treadmill because it was already 80F at sunrise, but we ended up getting some rain. Good running rain, steady but not too heavy and not much wind. So, I decided to take it outside. I ❤️ rainy runs, especially when it’s hot outside. The rain cooled things off a few degrees and kept me from overheating. It’s like running through a giant sprinkler!
I went to Pilates yesterday so I’m a little sore today. It’s getting easier so I really have to make sure I stay consistent. Planning on a second class tomorrow and maybe a super short run. Gotta squeeze some short ones in here and there if I’m hoping to get to 100 miles this month.5 -
@SummerSkier and @kgirlhart - I really like Skratch Labs energy chews.
I used skratch chews during marathon training to keep from totally burning out on gels. They are good. I like the consistency the best of all the ones I tried.3 -
Happy Global Running Day!
My legs felt tired this morning and I knew I had a run scheduled for tomorrow with my fast friend so I did a strength workout and walked 1.60 miles on the treadmill. Garmin told me my recovery would be delayed because I didn't sleep well. Later in the morning I remembered it was Global Running Day and how could I not? So, at lunch I got out for 1.25 miles. It was sunny and 76F but the real feel was 86F. So it was a sweaty but short one. (And Garmin gave me a 4+ performance - this is why I take Garmin with a grain of salt.)
Happy belated birthday @chris_in_cal! Hope you have a great time this weekend.
@tarun_yadavA - We are staying in a resort near SeaWorld that has pools, game room, pickle and tennis courts, etc. we have thrown out some ideas but we don't have any plans for the days we are there yet. Have you ever been on a text with 6 women trying to plan a vacation (don't answer that)? We finally got our excursions booked, shows reserved, transportation plans made, decided who was bringing door decorations, power charging stations, lanyards, etc. Have had numerous conversations about clothing. Numerous! I'm a simple gal and my friend that I typically travel a lot with is the same way. We are more of the go with the flow kind of people and this group is wearing me out! I love them though and I'm sure we will have a blast!
@shanaber - You are so inspirational to stay active while you are going through these treatments. I greatly admire you and your strength. (Glad Hobbes steered clear of the skunks!)4 -
